Mastering easier variations makes us stronger, not weaker!
Especially in calisthenics, some of us have a tendency to pick the hardest possible exercise we can barely do and only work that.
(Guys, I'm looking at you).
(Also looking at myself. Been there 😅).
While this may strengthen those muscles very quickly, we may be missing out on mastering the basic movement pattern of the exercise! This is the foundation upon which we should build our house.
Think of world-class sprinters. Sure, their muscles are explosively strong. But this firepower wouldn't be nearly as useful if they didn't master their TECHNIQUE first.
When we think technique, we want to think optimization!

I think it's easy for us to rationalize checking our phones immediately. Most of us are "offline" when we sleep anyway, so the urgency we feel may not be entirely accurate.
That said, if you feel like you need to check your phone right away, feel free! It's not my goal to tell anyone what to do. This is just what works for me.

Instantly Do More Pullups (Simple Hack)
Try this easy "hack" to instantly do more pullups!
A brief, intense isometric warmup like this puts a HIGH amount of force through our body and primes it for heavy loads.
This makes our regular set seem easy.
This was taught to me as the "immediate after-effect" of isometrics, but I can't find anywhere that corroborates that.
Call it the "oogabooga effect" if you want. It does seem to really help.
The time numbers are not set in stone. I suspect they depend on the individual's conditioning. Try shorter holds and different rest times if you like and let me know how it works for you!

Heal Soreness Faster
Here's a quick tip to heal muscle soreness faster that I've used for years! It seems obvious to some, but others take their sleep as time to "stretch" and "even out their posture" when our muscles will heal much better if we keep them relaxed while resting.

Stretches for Wrist Pain
A lot of people recently seem to have hurt their wrists. Or maybe I'm just hearing about it more.
When they ask for stretches, I basically tell them this.
Keep in mind, that this may work for grade 1 sprains, but more serious injuries (like ligament tears) will almost certainly require some form of medical attention.

Trouble losing/gaining weight?
If you have trouble with weight loss or weight gain, consider look into tracking your diet if you haven't.
Tracking is not for everyone. If the idea of it triggers eating disorders for you, consider looking into intuitive eating or other ways of healing your relationship with food first. However, if you have no issues like this, tracking can be a very valuable tool in your wheelhouse.
The problem with many calorie calculators is that they sometimes have a wide margin of error.
However, you can just use them to track everything you eat and drink for 2-3 weeks to establish a baseline.
Even if that baseline is incredibly off, you can still use it to add/remove from your diet consistently.
This is often much more reliable than just "trying to eat healthy", as strict rules we place on one day are sometimes lapsed by loose behavior the next day.
You also don't have to track for the rest of your life either. Doing this for a few weeks will give you a good idea of a baseline that you can use for several months or years.

Are you motivated by shame?
What motivates you?
Different things work for different people. Some respond to very gentle words, and others basically need a drill sergeant to scream at them.
However, I feel like there's some confusion between "tough love" and "self-hatred."
I also there's similar confusion between "self-love" and "complacency."
I don't think you need to hate yourself to motivate yourself.
I don't think being happy hinders ambition.
If you had a friend motivating you, would you want them to do it because they actually care about you? Or out of genuine hatred for you?
I understand the topic is a bit controversial. Some people swear by self-hatred.
At the end of the day, you can obviously do whatever you like!
These are just some thoughts.

Are you tall enough?
Are you concerned about your height?
I often get this sentiment from young men in our community.
(Others too, but it usually seems to be young men).
This idea that if they're not the right height, they'll never be successful, always be single, and never be respected is very sad.
It's also not at all true.
(they also feel this way about their race sometimes, but that's a different discussion).
A lot of the "criticism" we see comes from a verrrrrrrrrrrrry small minority of people. It's FAR from the majority, even if it feels that way sometimes.
The minority just feels loud.
Learn to love yourself because it'll help you love others. And ESPECIALLY don't stress about things you can't change.

Can't fall asleep? Try this.
Staying off electronics for a few hours before bed helps me sleep.
It's unusual, because I don't feel the usual "tiredness" but I can lie down and CHOOSE to sleep. Like I'm choosing to walk.
Another important thing I've recently picked up is not drinking coffee past the afternoon. I didn't think this affected me, but I think my tolerance isn't as high because I only drink it every other day.

You're not too fat for pullups. You're just doing weighted pullups!
People pay good money for quality weights. You have it attached to you.
Yes, you SEEM to progress more slowly, but you're pulling more weight and getting that much stronger.
Start with a progression you can do (usually some type of horizontal pullup at varying heights), and lose weight as you train.
You can gain strength and lose weight at the same time!

Calisthenics Muscle Building Advantage?
Those trying to build muscle with calisthenics can take advantage of how easy it is to change the intra-set difficulty without interrupting our time under tension. For example, going from full pushups to kneeling pushups.

Simply hanging from a bar or tree branch can potentially help shoulder pain!
Dr. Kirsch, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, details a protocol around hanging and light weightlifting in his book to cure shoulder pain.
Hanging has been an important part of movement forever, though, and has been incorporated into athletics and movement cultures for a long time.

Do we need to feel sore after a workout for it to be effective?
Soreness isn't needed for muscle growth, fat loss, or strength gains. You can have a very effective workout and not necessarily feel sore afterwards.

1 Minute a Day - Build Discipline
I get some messages that go something like "I want to improve my life, but I don't have the motivation to do anything. Not even something like drinking more water."
I get a surprising amount of these messages.
Yes, sometimes this is because something is awry in our diet, sleep, lifestyle, etc.
However, sometimes we're just lacking discipline.
We can't always rely on motivation. We don't wait for inspiration to brush our teeth. We just do it.
SOME discipline is required to do almost anything in life.
Going to failure seems to be good at building discipline. Pushing yourself beyond the point of "ugh I want to give up" seems to help.
I give a simple exercise here that's been used by martial artists for millennia to build strength and discipline.
It doesn't HAVE to be this. You can apply the failure/discipline principle to any exercise. But this one works well because it's relatively safe and training our legs can really suck.
In this case, that's a good thing.

How to Lose Belly Fat
Reducing belly fat is probably one of the most common goals in fitness.
I get asked about this EVERY DAY. Multiple times.
And while we CAN lose belly fat, we can't significantly TARGET our fat loss there with ab workouts like leg raises, situps, or crunches.
"Spot reduction" with exercise is not effective.*
We lose fat proportionately throughout our body with diet and exercise.
Individuals do tend to store fat in different areas, but this is largely up to genetics.
*I'm aware of some more recent studies that show some spot reduction by doing high-intensity workouts in an area followed by cardio. However, there aren't MANY studies about this, and it's debatable whether or not this is significantly more effective than just regular diet and exercise. It's also unknown if there were other factors in this study. It's interesting, but I'm hesitant to recommend it until we know more.

Stuck on Knee Pushups and Can't Do Full Pushups?
If you can do pushups on your knees but not on your toes, try this out!
Three things:
1.) Build up your numbers. Try to get to at least 2 Sets of 25 Repetitions. Slow and steady. 2 seconds down, 1 second pause, and 2 seconds up.
2.) Add a partial ROM movement like the top part of the full pushup. This will get you used to supporting your weight in this position. Go down a third of the way or halfway. Work your way down over time.
3.) ALWAYS finish up your partial ROM sets with a full ROM exercise.
ALTERNATIVELY: You can simply do Incline Pushups on a LOW platform. Start around thigh height and work your way to around shin height. Go for the 20-25 Repetition range. This will get you to full pushups as well.
This is an older video, so I hesitated before posting it. Let me know if you want me to remake it. MOST of the information will be the same. The camera quality will be a bit better and my humor will be a bit different.

Should we exercise when injured?
How should we exercise while we're injured? This is what I do.
Depending on the severity of the injury, I often rest the area for a few days. Afterwards, I'll gently stretch the area to re-introduce it into physical activity. As I start to heal more and more, I incorporate light exercise to speed recovery.
We can always exercise our uninjured parts of our body in the meantime! Even if you're not strong enough for one arm pushups, one arm pullups, or one leg squats, you can do these unilateral exercises with assistance!
