LowCarbDownUnder 2023 Conference b | Matt’s bipolar journey Resolved with KETO Part 2
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1127
Low Carb Down Under podcast
Matt's bipolar journey, part 2...
-he was better, following Stanford therapists protocol, but
-nothing stabilized his mood
-5 years gone, diagnosed with
treatment-resistant bipolar 1
"So, we were just supposed to accept it"
To that point: Matt had been
-treated by 41 professionals
-given 29 meds
Still had poor functioning cognition;
moods erratic; relationships dysfunctional
Fall 2020. heard about Steven Hayes, helped by
Dr Chris Palmer, Harvard...
-Had him on keto to address: obesity, addiction, & bipolar
"I told Matt about this, and he said: let's go"
-Dr Palmer agreed to help Matt pro-bono
-introduced us to Denise Potter & the
-Metabolic Psychiatry Clinic at Stanford
Jan 4th, Matt started on keto...
-had trouble sleeping at start; anxiety returned;
-told he had to ride this out, and he did
-Matt was completely committed
-March, no change in meds,
no mania, no depression
By May, no symptoms, just living his life
-attending classes; making friends...
"He was living a regular life...
we had not known if he would ever be
able to--stable mood day after day"

NADIR ALI 5’ | STATIN benefit for Female CAC=0; none Male 99.9%; none
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1125 | Dr Nadir Ali
Low Carb Denver podcastPrimary prevention:
Primary prevention of heart disease...
Collecting all of the data yields: Primary Prevention
-does not help women in mortality reduction whatsoever
Define: primary prevention is someone with no cardiac event
-if have CAC above 0, but no event,
still primary prevention patient
If CAC score is 0, studies show
-up to a decade with statins: no benefit
"In right clinical setting, don't need statin"
If you fall outside this category...say: middle-aged man taking
statins for primary prevention. Take 100 of these, the benefit
of statins in mortality reduction? 0.1%
[99.9% for that year: no benefit]
Physicians are told: relative risk reduction
is how to measure statin benefit
Dr Malcolm Kendrick would say:
It is like saying, if winning lotto is 1/15m
"I will increase your odds by 100%"
[increases odds from 1 to 2 in 15mil]
In actual trials: presented as 30% better
-when actually: just 0.1% in this group
Dear doctor: Question: On this relative risk basis, you are
going to give this drug to patient to take for 30 years!!?
-comfortable making that decision alone?
-want to empower patient to decide?
-want to discuss side effects?
"This is where our medical profession
IS LACKING in CRITICAL THINKING
for themselves"
-rely too much on opinion-leaders

NADIR ALI 4’ | Study 28k people: PCSK9 inhibitor… No mortality benefit
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1124 | Dr Nadir Ali
Low Carb Denver podcast
Animal studies: using PCSK9 inhibitor-like approach
results: higher risk of diabetes & visceral obesity &
higher fat in heart
WHY? It removes LDL receptor in liver & pancreas, that was
sucking up LDL from bloodstream...
LDL particle is not just cholesterol filled,
but is fat filled, so: more receptors &
fat is removed from circulation, giving
fatty liver & fatty pancreas
People born with PCSK9 DEFICIENCY: they have higher risk:
-diabetes; higher weight; more visceral obesity
Fourier PCSK9 trials, 28k patients: half control; half: Repatha
results: Repatha group dropped LDL: to 30mg/dL [.8 mmol/L]
Control: 90mg/dL
OUTCOME: no mortality difference!
"Abject failure of the drug"
SUM: PCSK9 inhibitor: higher risk
-diabetes, visceral obesity
Human genetic trials: same result
"Do not tell patients this drug beneficial"

NADIR ALI 3’ | LDL higher than 250: NO CARDIAC EVENTS in 10 years
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1123 | Dr Nadir Ali
Low Carb Denver podcast
This grass roots MOVEMENT of evaluating ONE'S OWN HEALTH
-thru metabolic parameters & conferences like LowCarbDenver
-has leveled the playing field between physicians and
consumers of medicine
This will change the paradigm re what
is important in cardiac health &
protect doctors like Dr Ali
The movement will focus on
-IR; inflammation; quality of lipoproteins
-NOT on levels of LDL
Example: 100 patients who have LDL
above 250, but CAC score = 0 for 3 years
Also, many patients with LDL above 250 with NO CARDIAC
EVENTS in 10 years...
This will continue to improve as research in this field grows
PCSK9: protein made by liver that binds to LDL receptor in the
liver: to suck up the LDL [the other good cholesterol]...
-it destroys the receptor, LDL remains in circulation
[LDL is higher, which bothers the Lipid Theory of Heart Disease]
So: PCSK9 INHIBITORS invented to
reduce LDL in blood by blocking PCSK9
from eliminating LDL receptors...
this lowers LDL
Animal studies: using PCSK9 inhibitor-like approach
results: higher risk of diabetes & visceral obesity &
higher fat in heart

NADIR ALI 2’ | Cardiologist: protected in giving patients statin choice
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1122 | Dr Nadir Ali
Low Carb Denver podcast
Dr Ali, cardiologist: "In last 10 years, since I changed standard
practice and began following low carb: no patient has had a
cardiac event due to:
following a fasting diet; low refined carb diet; exercise...
And have not seen an increase in
cardiac events in those who stopped
taking statins"
-if this were early 2000 it would be
very different
-because of Dr Tim Noakes and others
I am protected in this approach
"Over past 10 years, I have been referred often due to
my Youtube channel or LowCarbDenver talk [viewed 1mil+]
-new patients are already motivated to try this approach
-they may be doing better due to their self-selection
than others who prefer the standard
establishment approach to meds"
Pushback from your hospital?
-in beginning I was reported to med staff
'patient came to hospital with cardiac
event while not taking statin'
My reply: you have had 10 patients with
cardiac events while on statins...
Cardiac disease has so many variables of causation...
-lipid profiles; sleep; stress; IR; inflammation
If I have cardiac event tomorrow...don't assume, because
I follow low carb; have high LDL; low TG; high HDL,
that the event is due to high LDL
-I have high stress on the job
-loss of sleep due to work...
"Be cautious when considering heart
disease is caused by one variable"

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1121 | Dr Nadir Ali
Low Carb Denver podcast
Dr Nadir Ali, cardiologist: with heart patient & statins...
-in secondary prevention [already had stint, bypass surgery, or
had myocardial infarction]
-best trial of statins was Forest: 1994, Scandinavia,
-funded & managed by Merck
Results: degree of benefit [mortality risk]
-in statin group v control:
saved 0.6% lives per year
-99.4% had no benefit
"in my opinion, very small improvement"
-brings increased risk of myopathy &
worsening of diabetes, ED"
Dr David Diamond researched this sub-group that benefited
from statins: they were severely insulin resistant
-had high TG & low HDL--only group who benefitted!
"When I consider a drug that a patient will take for 20+ years...
I want to explain degree of benefit
in absolute risk reduction
[NOT RELATIVE RISK,
which exaggerates the benefit]
Patient decides on drug or on lifestyle
changes: fasting, nutrition, exercise"
Many patients decide statin benefits
-are not what they had thought

-bladder pain and uterus endometriosis
glyphosate causes leaky gut, but also leaking in uterus & bladder
Doctors don't know what it is
Need: organic diet
CASE woman with interstitial cystitis
-organic diet 1 year, full remission
Sapien: Our community eats organic and gets
lots of health benefits...due to no glyphosate?
"Eating grassfed beef--very low glyphosate"
Are non-GMO foods safe from glyphosate?
-many are not safe: many non-GMO foods SPRAYED with
-glyphosate just before harvest to kill the plant for convenience
-end up with lots of it in plants & processed foods
-epidemic of celiac disease due to wheat being sprayed
Gluten? yes, but it is contaminated
-same microbes that break down casein in
milk break down gluten in wheat
-proline needs special enzymes to break down
-glyphosate kills these enzymes
-proteins pass through gut wall, immune cells
attack w/ antibodies: attack own tissues

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1119 | Dr Stephanie Seneff
Melanoma skin cancer has been rising [while sunscreen usage
has risen]: stronger SPF...used to be 4 or 8; now 50 or 65
-have aluminum in them: toxic! absorbed thru skin,
-messes up enzyme eNOS [endothelial nitric oxide synthase]
-which make cholesterol sulfate [critical for LDL protection]
Sunscreen makes you think you are safe, but UV still gets
through [too much UV does damage]
"Whole point of sunscreen is to PREVENT
MELANOMA...but it is A FAILURE...
it is doing the OPPOSITE"
- - - moms & dads - - - are you listening?
Big pharma has gotten it all wrong so much...
Example: depression & anxiety drugs DO NOT WORK
[see Dr Elizabeth Bright or Dr Chris Palmer, both Harvard]
Opioid drugs causing addictions
Back to glyphosate: shikimate pathway not found in human
cells [Monsanto said, this is wonderful news for Round-UP]
-1 enzyme in pathway: EPSP synthase is sensitive to glyphosate
-critical enzyme; when broken, system is in trouble
Plants depend on this pathway [to make nutritious
polyphenol compounds]
Back to glyphosate: shikimate pathway not found in human

Shikimate pathway outputs aromatic amino acids,

thyroid hormones,
vitamin Bs--niacin, riboflavin, vitamin K2
& melanin: protects skin. ALL BLOCKED BY GLYPHOSATE
B vitamins from gut are critical to health
-not all nutrients come from diet

@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1118 | Dr Stephanie Seneff
Peak Human podcast
Cholesterol is essential nutrient
-found only in animals [plants have NONE]
-gives us a brain & mobility
-essential for muscles & brain & immune system
Sulfate also critical for immune system
-glyphosate disrupts heparan sulfate
Heparan sulfate--lines all blood vessels, makes blood healthy...
-sulfation degree influences health of blood
"lots of sulfate needed to make blood healthy"
-when molecules get damaged by sugar or oxygen;
-they need to be removed and rebuilt into useful molecules
Happens in lysocomes, which depend on heparan sulfate
-when hepara sulfate deficient, HARD for cells
to recycle debris
Example: amyloid plaque builds up...leading
to Alzheimer's Disease
LDL gets glycated & oxidized due to lack of sulfate in blood...
-need reactive oxygen species to make the sulfate
-they damage the LDL
"LDL can be packaged up safely inside LDL particle
-if there is enough sulfate around it"
-cholesterol sulfate is in the membrane of the LDL particle
-makes water into gel around membrane
"Gelled water is shield, keeping glycation away"
LDL becomes healthy if enough
cholesterol sulfate in its membrane...so
sulfate can be put out into blood, making
gelled water seal--"Exclusion Zone" SAFE
Without sulfate, LDL gets glycated, oxidized, goes into artery
wall to cause heart disease---due to insufficient sulfate...
PREVENTION
-sunshine without sunglasses or sunscreen helps brain by
sunlight exposure to eyes [NOT EXCESS SUN EXPOSURE]
-spring sunlight tan prepares body for summer sun
-tan protects skin
-but if use sunscreen, never know when too
much sun and lose benefits of sun exposure
"need to build up own resistance to sunburn"
-perhaps early morning walk in sunlight

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1117 | Dr Stephanie Seneff
Peak Human podcast
Energy from sun catalyzes enzymes: sunlight in eyes
-reaches pineal gland, right behind eyes
-pineal gland controls sleep--makes melatonin
-sunlight in morning: pineal gland starts making sulfate
AT NIGHT-hooks sulfate onto melatonin molecules
-into cerebral spinal fluid that supplies brain
-clears cellular debris like AMYLOID PLAQUES
due to melatonin sulfate!
Sunlight produces cholesterol sulfate...
-very important molecule, but is derailed by glyphosate
-enzyme endothelial nitric oxide thinsase makes nitric oxide
-also makes sulfur dioxide 'moonlighting enzyme--makes 2 things
-these 2 things keep blood flowing at RIGHT VISCOSITY
-sulfate structures water [4th phase] makes gel
-gel lines blood vessels
-allows red blood cells slip thru capillaries
with very little friction
Cholesterol sulfate produced in skin in response to sunlight...
-then released in blood stream, where it
-travels freely [doesn't have to be carried in LDL particle]
[when low on cholesterol sulfate: liver compelled to release LDL]
"High total cholesterol is consequence of low cholesterol sulfate"
Oxidized LDL is troublesome
"My theory: heart squirrels away cholesterol in arteries because
it desperately needs it"
Cholesterol & Sulfate support each other so
they can easily travel thru blood stream
-distributed thru body together
-at destination, split apart
-sulfate goes into extracellular matrix
-cholesterol goes into membrane
Cholesterol is essential nutrient
-found only in animals [plants have NONE]

STEPHANIE SENEFF c | AUTISTIC KIDS: glyphosate brings gut & brain damage
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
@doctorstotrust3552
presents episode 1116 | Dr Stephanie Seneff
Peak Human podcast
Gut microbes have extra enzymes, our bodies do not have,
which are critical to digest proteins in infants and children...
-make B vitamins which come from shikimate pathway
-also make aromatic amino acids essential for proteins
-these are reduced due to pathway damage by glyphosate
Critical metabolites, normally produced by microbes
are DEFICIENT, while
other metabolites produced by pathogens
are toxic--messes up gut
SO: kids have bloating, diarrhea from gut
dysbiosis: in autistic kids--well established
-glyphosate is problem
Beyond
Gut microbiome very difficult subject: so many, so different
-unique to each person
-bacteria are trying to adjust to situation to optimize health
Damaged by UPF--ultra processed foods which are sterile of key
micronutrients and antioxidant molecules
"Eating lots of herbs & spices is good...
getting complex molecules, not in UPF"
Example: chlorophyll can be used to support
mitochondrial function...only in whole, natural
foods...stripped out of UPF
Hurting gut microbiome: flour & sugar have lost all nutrition...
-producers add back in artificial nutrients that are bad
Example: Folic acid added into flour
-not natural form of folate you need
Example: added iron:
We need heme iron from animal foods
so our body can process it!
Example: cereal companies add in RDA levels
of artificial vitamins, minerals: not helpful

-insulin draws sugar
out of circulation,
into muscle, liver...
-IR: still high glucose
in blood vessels
Modern medicine is ignoring good studies and good science...
Study: 10 Aborigines, all had metabolic syndrome, 7 week trial:
-live their traditional lifestyle & diet, in countryside
Results: Glucose dropped from 11.6 to 6.6 mmol/l
TG: from 4.02 to 1.15
BMI: 27.2 to 24.5

PAUL MASON c: | EXCESS CARBS: -liver turns to fat -reduces HDL
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1109 | Dr Paul Mason
Low Carb Down Under podcast
NEJM article, 100k+ participants, 4 years...
-salt in urine vs all-cause mortality
Left:
odds of dying
Bottom: salt
LOWEST
MORTALITY:
4-6g / day
2g / day =
DOUBLE RISK
OF DEATH
Keto and carnivore diets reduce insulin, so salt is not retained...
-need to intake more salt
Metabolic syndrome symptom 3: triglycerides [TG] in blood...
-high levels of insulin [diabetes]; you have high TG
WHY: liver stores glucose as glycogen [up to 100g only]
-when at capacity, starts
de novo lipogenesis
-produces TG
Study: feed excess carbs
measure what burns; stores
-day 3: began fat production
"This happens on SAD: more
carb in than burn...so: fat!"
Excess carbs, rejected by IR muscles, turns into TG...
-into VLDL particles in blood
HDL: high levels are good, but TG taken up by HDL particles
-leading to HDL breakdown
"Same mechanism that raises TG,
also reduces HDL"

PAUL MASON b: | FATTY LIVER: uric acid UP; nitric oxide DOWN: Blood pressure UP
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com presents episode 1108 | Dr Paul Mason
Low Carb Down Under podcast
Now that TG is stuck in fat cell, to burn it, must break it down...
-using hormone sensitive lipase: wiped out by insulin
"With elevated insulin, very clearly leads to higher fat mass"
Metabolic syndrome symptom 2: elevated blood pressure...
-top line...insulin infusion; bottom line...none
-in clinic: start low carb; insulin drops; must reduce blood meds
Metabolic syndrome symptom 2: elevated blood pressure...
Fatty liver increases uric acid; this inhibits nitric oxide
-nitric oxide causes blood vessels to relax, lowers blood pressure
Fluid follows SALT
-increase blood salt; draws
fluid into blood
-insulin tells kidneys
"hold onto salt"
Blood flows through kidneys and some gets filtered...
-flows through, eventually passes out into urine
-at 4 sites, insulin draws out salt back into blood
"In excess insulin state
body does everything it
can to hold onto salt"
-essential hypertension is an
insulin-dependent state
-if no high insulin, likely
no high blood pressure
"keto flu" used to be called "Atkins flu"...unknown cause
-if suddenly go low carb, will cause temporary salt deficiency
until body can adapt
-lower insulin leads to lower salt
-lower salt leads to lower blood pressure

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1107 | Dr Paul Mason
Low Carb Down Under podcast
Good health is absence of bad stuff:
-not overweight; no high blood pressure; no high TG in blood;
and high HDL; no elevated blood sugar levels
No Metabolic Syndrome
-fat around abdomen
-fasting glucose greater than 5.6 [100 mg/dL]
-blood pressure greater than 135/85
-TG greater than 1.5 [133 mg/dL]
-HDL less than 1 [39 mg/dL]
Have 3? you have
metabolic syndrome
Each caused by insulin resistance
Abdominal obesity: this fat is associated with heart disease...
-rising insulin = rising body fat mass
Insulin causes obesity: more fat into cell makes it bigger
Inside cell: fatty acids & glucose combine to make TG...
TG too big to
enter fat cell...
LPL enzyme does
it...triggered by
insulin!
Insulin works on
GLUT4 to import
glucose...
making TG & fat
cell BIGGER

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1105 | Dr Andreas Eenfeldt
Low Carb Denver podcast
Dr Andreas Eenfeldt...
-we know eat less doesn't work due to hunger
Eat Better in 3 steps
1-low carb works to cut body fat
But is it all about carbs?
2018 study: low carb v low fat
-both groups lost 6 kg
Carbs are not everything
We can learn more about why
carbs work so well for metabolic
health
Most famous low carb study: Shai study over 24 months...
-low carb lost more weight than Mediterranean & low fat
"Low carb group ate MORE PROTEIN"
Study, Atkins diet lost more weight
"Also ate far, far more protein"
Pattern:
when low carb works:
protein is always higher
-in studies where low carb
did not win...
they ate less protein
Why do humans eat?
-for nutrients [protein + vitamins & minerals together]
-and energy [carbs & fat]
"Both animals & humans tend to eat
UNTIL FULL OF NUTRIENTS"
"Environment where processed
foods are made full of carbs
and processed oils, low
protein...must eat a LOT MORE
to get satiated"

http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1104 | Dr Ben Bikman
PHC UK podcast
The food we eat can cause or cure these metabolic issues...
1-control carbs: whole fruits and vegetables
2-prioritize protein: from animal sources
"We are built to digest animal protein"
3-don't fear animal fat
"In nature, protein
always comes w/ fat"
With fat, we digest &
absorb protein better
With fat, we digest & absorb protein better...
-we have proteolytic enzymes from pancreas in intestines
that split up proteins into small units
-must have bile to work well
-bile only comes when fat is digested
Animal protein & animal fat should
ALWAYS COME TOGETHER
Happy ending...look thru an insulin-centric lens...
-manage our intake of macronutrients
-that will cure the problem
-will keep meds out
Measures
Dynamic
-2 hour glucose test--NOT COMMON
Static
-insulin ~36pmol/l OK
=5.2 IU/mL
C-Peptide: sister to insulin
-come into blood 1 to 1
-VERY DIFFERENT HALF LIFE
-stays in blood much longer
-T2D: 'insulin measure won't work'
-C-Peptide will tell if making insulin or not

presents episode 1102 | Dr Ben Bikman
PHC UK podcast
Conventional clinician has glucose-centric paradigm, so
-says, must reduce glucose at ANY COST
"Push insulin UP...don't even measure it; just push it up"
-as long as glucose is coming down
Does Not Solve Problem
Meta-analysis: in T2D: no benefit to lowering glucose...
-We now that rising insulin is a COMMON CAUSE of IR
makes hyperinsulinemic patient even MORE HYPERINSULINEMIC
Some direct quotes from PUBMED:
"longer insulin therapy;
more IR!"
-giving type 2 diabetic
insulin is like giving an
alcoholic a glass of wine
HIGH INSULIN CAUSED
THE PROBLEM
Type 2 Diabetes patient: given higher insulin doses over time...
-body weight climbs, while amount of food is dropping
-so, eating less, body fat grows
-out body is not closed system...cannot account for every
amount of energy that is exchanged
INSULIN SLOWS BASAL
METABOLIC RATE
-type 1: slows 20%
CANCER RISK UP 2X
HEART DISEASE UP 3X

BEN BIKMAN e; | Diabetic drugs only cut glucose…It’s the insulin dummy!
http://www.DoctorsToTrust.com
presents episode 1101 | Dr Ben Bikman
PHC UK podcast
SGLT1/2 inhibitors
SGLT1 is glucose transporter: from guts into bloodstream
SGLT2 is glucose transporter: from kidneys back into blood
These drugs BLOCK that effect: and they work on glucose
-and this lowers insulin
-BUT where glucose is
high...water follows
-in diabetes, so much
glucose stays in urine
-water follows into
urine
SGLT1/2 inhibitors
-block intestines' ability to pull glucose in, keeps water in gut
-gives distress to 'passing gas'...socially always on edge!
Also creating diabetes via polyuria & UTI:
-bacteria eat glucose
-urinary tract constantly
being invaded all way up
-if flood urinary tract with
glucose
-support bacteria thru
bladder to kidneys
If we willingly block someone's glucose absorption, giving them
catastrophic diarrhea, or
-force it out of kidneys into urinary tract...
"Maybe...give less glucose!"
-no need for this drug
Sulfonylureas force beta cells to create more insulin
Insulin injections raise insulin
