When an patient goes on low carb, ultra low seed oil diet...
-about 30-50% of those who would have been sent to
surgery, cancel due to no longer needing it
-is their arthritis reversed? technically, no, but pain is gone

Don't be confused between urea and uric acid...
Eating lots of protein will increase urea
That, in no way, is problematic
-will urine a lot of excess urea out
Study, 1963, showed: most important factor in urine
-in terms of antibacterial activity, was amount of urea
In dogs, trying to induce
urinary tract infections:
those eating lots of meat
had none due to urea
killing bacteria

Females worried about UTIs, a high animal protein diet
which increases urea, can be a good thing...
-also supplement with electrolytes with sodium,
potassium, and magnesium
-these also exert anti-bacterial activity
Patients in my clinic with UTI problems, some on daily
antibiotics long term, able
to drop them
High protein, electrolytes,
much better and no
side effects

Uric acid also goes up on keto diet...
-uric acid is breakdown product of purines
-in some people, can cause gout due to crystalizing
-creating sharp needles in joints
Many doctors make the mistake of assuming if high uric acid
you must have gout--which is INCORRECT
-it increases possibility
Purines do not come from
eating meat...that is myth

Starting keto will give a transient increase of uric acid
-due to body starting to produce ketones
-while cellular machinery for body to burn those ketones
has not been upregulated yet
-so body urinates them out
-they share same transporter as uric acid
-as ketones leave body, make harder
for uric acid to leave
-increase for a month is normal
Does Not Lead to GOUT

Have seen only one patient with gout attack, would have
happened anyway...it was coincidental
-patients with history of gout see the risk decrease on keto
-drug: Allopurinol, suppresses enzyme that processed
purines into uric acid
-able to stop this in every case, once patient is on keto
for awhile and lost weight

The myth that eating protein will cause bone problems...
-how did this arise?
-over 100 years ago, discovered that those on high protein
diets had high levels of calcium in urine
-assumed that it came from bone: not true
When eating high protein, absorb more calcium from diet
-thus, more is excreted in urine

RCT studies show: high protein diet can assist in reversing
osteoporosis
Study 2002, supplementing with calcium & vitamin D,
menopausal females & males over 65, 3 years...
-did DEXA scan every 6 months to check bone density
-could slow the degradation, but could not restore it
Stratified by protein consumption:
those that ate high protein actually
Reversed osteoporosis in hip bones

Bone is mineralized protein: protein strands with minerals
embedded within...
To Rebuild Bone: need all the ingredients, not just calcium
Since bone is 40% protein, that is critical element
"Protein is good for the bone"
