At the beginning of a new year, it’s a good idea to take an inventory of the credit cards you already have, which ones you want, and why you want them (i.e. what goals do you want to achieve?).
For me, my 2023 credit card strategy has 4 parts: CHASE credit cards, CORE credit cards, SUPPLEMENTARY credit cards, and NEW credit cards.
The overall focus will be primarily on cash back credit cards and secondarily on travel credit cards.
For CHASE credit cards, I’ll be using the Chase Freedom Flex as often as I can. That’s because the Chase Freedom calendar allows you to earn 5% cash back (issued as Chase Ultimate Rewards points) in useful, everyday categories that change every 3 months. Since you can earn at the 5% rate on up to $1,500 in spend per quarter, that’s 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points alone! There’s also the Shop through Chase portal and Chase Refer a Friend program to earn even more.
For CORE credit cards, I’ll be using my American Express cards (Amex Platinum for Schwab, Amex Gold, Amex Green, Amex Blue Business Plus) as my main 4, plus some additional cash back credit cards with no annual fee. Since I redeem my Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back into my Schwab brokerage account, it makes for a great cash back setup.
For SUPPLEMENTARY credit cards, these are the ones I use for more isolated situations. I use airline credit cards (currently just the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select) for perks / benefits, but not for spend; hotel credit cards for the same reason, but also for spending directly at hotels; and miscellaneous cards for select airport lounge access, individual retailers (e.g. using my U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card for Costco and Target), and for other reasons like when I want 1 credit card for everything.
For NEW credit cards, there are currently 8 on my radar, one of which is the BILT credit card.

For Q1 2023, I’m focusing my credit card rewards across 6 credit cards with a focus on cash back rewards:
1. Chase Freedom Flex Card: I’m using this cash back credit card to earn 3% - 5% in THREE categories: grocery stores (5%), Target (5%), and Dining at restaurants (3%). The Chase Freedom calendar also includes 5% on Fitness Clubs & Gym Memberships, but I’ll be using my Amex Platinum Card for that (see why below) as well as the U.S. Bank Cash Plus card (5% year round). Note: The Chase Freedom Flex issues cash back in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
2. Amex Blue Business Plus Card: I’m using this Amex business credit card at my catch-all credit card (i.e. for all my non-bonus / non-category spend that would normally earn 1X - 1.5X on other credit cards) because it earns 2X on all purchases, up to $50K spend per year. I’m also adding recurring expenses to it so all my auto-bill charges will be on ONE credit card.
3. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card: I’m using this Amex credit card for the $25/mo. dining credit (up to $300/yr.), which is a new benefit that replaced the old $300 Marriott Bonvoy credit. This hotel credit card provides me with massive value as it allows me to maintain Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status, offers 25 Elite Night Credits, issues a Marriott Free Night certificate worth up to 85,000 points, and more!
4. Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card: This is going to be my best credit card for gas purchases this quarter. It earns 8X at gas stations, and if you value Wyndham points around 1¢ each, then that’s an 8% return on gas spend! This hotel credit card also issues 15,000 points each account anniversary, provides automatic Wyndham Diamond status, and more.
5. American Express Platinum Card for Schwab (Amex Schwab Platinum Card): This is my best credit card for lounge access, and I’ve been using it at Oakland airport at the Escape Lounge there. I’m also an Equinox member, so now that the Amex Platinum $300 Equinox credit has been expanded to include ALL membership types (I have a single-club membership) and is also issued annually instead of $25/mo., I’m going to give it a try this year! Note: I also use this card to redeem Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back into my Schwab account at 1.1¢ per point. This is THE Amex card that makes an Amex Trifecta setup worth it for cash back. All the Amex points earned across other cards (the regular Amex Platinum Card, the Amex Gold Card, the Amex Green Card and others that earn Amex Membership Rewards points) can ALL be redeemed via the Schwab Platinum Card at the elevated rate.
6. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card: This card doesn’t get carried around, rather, I’ll be leaving it as my default payment method in my Amazon account to earn 5% back.

It’s been a busy 12 months (much more so than I thought)! Here are the 12 credit cards I got approved for this year…
In January, I didn’t apply for any credit cards.
In February, I got the Hilton Honors Business Card from American Express. It had a welcome offer of 130,000 Hilton points and a free night certificate, and I also met the $15K spend requirement to earn a 2nd free night!
In March, I added the Chase Ink Business Preferred card (100K Chase Ultimate Rewards points for the welcome offer) and the Amex Business Gold Card (90K Amex Membership Rewards points).
In April, I went for the Chase Sapphire Preferred 80K bonus. Although I had this credit card before, I made sure I was under the Chase 5/24 Rule as well as the Chase 48 Month Rule, so it worked out perfectly.
In May, I didn’t apply for any credit cards.
In June, I applied for the AAdvantage Aviator World Elite Business Mastercard with an 80K mile bonus. The signup bonus spend requirement was quite easy to meet at just $2K in the first 90 days.
In July, I added 2 hotel credit cards: the IHG Rewards Premier Card and the IHG Rewards Premier Business Card. Each one had a signup bonus of 140K points, and the personal version also came with a free night certificate worth up to an additional 40K points. I like that each of these credit cards provide an annual free night certificate, too, making each one a keeper card for the foreseeable future.
In August, I saw the Citi Premier Card had a limited-time offer to earn 80K points, so I got it as that was worth $800 cash back or $800+ towards travel redemptions.
In September, I didn’t apply for any credit cards.
In October, I submitted an application for the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card. It’s 3% cash back category on U.S. Online Retail Purchases (up to $6K/yr.) is really fantastic.
In November, I added the Capital One SavorOne card as it has a TON of 3% cash back categories, PLUS some higher categories (5%+) in really useful, everyday areas. Like the Citi Premier Card, it’s a fantastic ‘do-it-all’ credit card that can take the place of having multiple credit cards.
In December, I ended the year with the Bank of American Premium Rewards credit card and my 2nd Amex Blue Business Plus card (this time applying with my EIN as an LLC).

Should You Fly Spirit Airlines? (5 Things to Know)
Thinking about flying Spirit? I just got back from my first ever Spirit Airlines flight and had a really positive experience! Here's my full Spirit Airlines Review with 5 things I learned that you should know before booking your flight. Click “Show More” to see Ad Disclosure.

With all the ‘Spirit Airlines Be Like’ videos and negative press that the airline gets, I thought I’d write about my positive experience flying the airline for the first time!
I initially had a round-trip flight booked from OAK airport to SNA airport on Southwest Airlines. However, the major operational meltdown during the week of December 26-30 caused my flight to get canceled.
So, since Spirit Airlines also offers nonstop flights from OAK to SNA, I decided to give it a go! Here are 5 things I learned about Spirit:
1. Spirit Airlines is an ultra-low-cost carrier. That means you’re paying for airfare and THAT’S IT! Everything else costs extra and prices usually go up the longer you wait (and the heavier the bag). For that reason, set your expectations, plan what you need, and pay for all the incidental charges you want upfront during the booking process (or you’ll pay more at the airport).
2. Spirit Airlines has an 8-step booking process. Each step along the way allows you to add additional items to customize your itinerary. Here are the steps:
a. Search For a Flight. You’ll see 2 prices, Standard and Savers Club. The Spirit Savers Club is an annual membership offering discounts on flights, bags, seats, and more. Furthermore, you can pay for your flight in dollars (i.e. cash), points, or a combination of points and cash.
b. Pick a Bundle. This is where you can save money by grouping perks together like: picking your seat, purchasing shortcut boarding, adding a checked bag and/or a carry-on bag, and adding Spirit Flight Flex, which allows you to modify your flight once for free (minus fare differences).
c. Enter Passenger Info. This is a standard flow that you’ll experience with other airlines.
d. Select Bag Options. 1 personal item is always included. If you purchase a carry-on bag, you’ll also receive Zone 1 boarding. Be sure to comply with the carry-on and checked bag size and weight restrictions.
e. Choose Seats. The Spirit Airlines Big Front Seat is kind of like a first class seat but without first class amenities / service. It offers more leg room, a wider seat, more comfortable padding, and a location at the front of the plane. The Premium Seats are located in the emergency exit row and offer more leg room. The Standard seats are located throughout the cabin.
f. Choose Options. This step includes adding things like inflight wi-fi, Spirit Flight Flex, Skip Through Security, and Get On Board Faster with Zone 2 boarding.
g-h. Pay & Confirm. You can also add insurance at this step (and PayPal is a payment method).
3. The Spirit Airlines Mobile App Is AWESOME! It’s got all the essential functions you’ll need to manage your trips, book new flights, and manage your account. Get it!
4. The Spirit Airlines loyalty program is called Free Spirit. There are 2 Tiers (Silver Members and Gold Members, each of which can help you waive a lot of the fees you’d normally pay. There’s also the Spirit Airlines credit card (Free Spirit Travel More World Elite Mastercard) issued by Bank of America to help you earn even faster.
5. It’s Not All Perfect :D The seatback pocket isn’t really a pocket (and there's no seat-back entertainment), the standard seat comfort is just ok, bag check in lines can get very long (so arrive early), and there are no free snacks or beverage service.

The American Express Blue Business Plus Card is one of the best business credit cards for new small businesses for a number of reasons.
First, it has a $0 annual fee, so it won’t cost you anything to keep it open year after year, and that makes it a great long-term keeper card to build credit history.
Second, it earns 2X Amex Membership Rewards points on ALL purchases, up to $50,000 of spend per year (then 1X). Most credit cards earn 1X - 1.5X points outside of any other specific bonus categories, so to have 2X as the base earning rate is fantastic. Think of it like a 2% cash back card, but that 2% return is only realized for certain types of travel redemptions instead of cash (note: if you’re looking for a business credit card that earns cash back, check out the Amex Blue Business Cash Card instead).
Third, it’s a really straightforward credit card. You don’t have to worry about rewards categories that rotate, earn at different rates, require activation, etc. If you like simplicity, this card delivers.
Fourth, the Amex Blue Business Plus is eligible for Amex Offers. These are card-linked offers (i.e. digital coupons) that you can add to your card to earn extra rewards (e.g. more points, discounts, statement credits) at select merchants. For example, you may see offers like: earn 15% back on purchases at FedEx Office up to a certain cap, $5 off at select gas stations when you spend $30 or more, a $60 statement credit at Marriott hotels after spending $300, etc. Many of these offers can be quite useful and can add up to hundreds (or thousands) of additional savings per year.
Fifth, the points you earn from this card (Amex Membership Rewards points, or MR points for short) can be combined with the points earned from other Amex credit cards, provided they too earn the same MR points. This means if you also have the Amex Platinum Card, the Amex Gold Card, the Amex Green Card, the Amex Everyday Card, etc., all the points earned across all these cards can be pooled together into 1 point balance (and this includes both personal and business credit cards).

Although best known for their credit cards and charge cards, Amex did a great job entering the business banking product space. The American Express Business Checking account is an EXCELLENT digital product that currently offers the following benefits:
- Limited Time Offer: Earn 60,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after qualifying activities (apply before 1.03.2022)
- 1.3% APY on balances up to $500,000
- No minimum balance requirement
- No monthly maintenance fees
- 24/7 support
In today’s world, it’s rather hard to find checking accounts that (a) don’t charge you a bunch of fees - or require you to do certain activities to waive them - and (b) don’t have minimum balance requirements - whereby if you don’t meet them, you’ll be charged even more fees.
❓QUESTION: What do I need to open an Amex business checking account?
👉 ANSWER: In order to open American Express Business Checking, you will need:
- Your Employee Identification Number (EIN) or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)
- Your Articles of Organization or a Certificate of Formation (Amex lists this as a requirement, although I did not have to provide it during the application process. Good to have it nonetheless in case they do ask)
- Information from a Driver’s License, State I.D., or Passport for each owner
- A Social Security Number (SSN) and ID verification for any Beneficial Owner with ownership of 25% or more
- A “Doing Business As” (DBA) certificate only if your business operates under more than one name
- A U.S. business address
- Information about your industry, size, and the purpose of your account

💵 REDEEMING AMEX POINTS
You can redeem Membership Rewards points for deposits into your Amex Business Checking Account at a rate of 1,000 points for an $8.00 deposit (i.e. 0.8¢ per point, this is the standard rate). This holds true if you have cards like the Amex Green Card, Amex Gold Card, Amex Business Gold Card, Amex Platinum Card (personal version), etc.
HOWEVER…if you have an Amex Business Platinum Card plus an American Express Business Checking Account linked to the same Membership Rewards Account, you can then redeem your Membership Rewards points for a deposit at a rate of 1,000 points for $10.00 (i.e. 1.0¢ per point) for up to 1,000,000 points per calendar year. Beyond that, you can still redeem Amex points for deposits but only at the standard rate of 0.8¢ per point.

Chase currently offers 3 different types of business checking accounts:
- Chase Business Complete Banking ($15 or $0 monthly service fee)
- Chase Performance Business Checking ($30 or $0 monthly service fee)
- Chase Platinum Business Checking ($95 or $0 monthly service fee)
Each one has different requirements to waive the monthly service fees (usually involving maintaining a certain level of average daily balance).
I’ll be applying for the Chase Business Complete Banking account, which is a good entry-level checking account and I can waive that service fee simply by maintaining at least $2,000 as my average daily balance.
Up to this point, all checking accounts and savings accounts with Chase, plus my Chase credit cards, have either been on the personal side or on the business side as a sole proprietor.
Now that I formed an LLC, the goal is to open a business checking account for that new business entity.

🎬VIDEO - I Canceled 5 Amex Cards (Fully Explained): https://youtu.be/np-dE6jEois
MY AMEX CREDIT CARD JOURNEY…
- Since the beginning in 2013, I’ve opened a total of 29 Amex card accounts, of which 18 have been closed and 11 of which remain open.
YEAR: 2013
- I opened 2 Amex credit cards, the Amex Blue Sky Card and the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card. I actually got these about 3 days apart since the initial credit limit I was given on the Blue Sky Card was tiny (only $1,000) … so, I applied for another :D
YEAR: 2015
- I opened the Hilton Honors American Express card and the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card. I was traveling a lot at the time, so getting a couple hotel credit cards made a lot of sense. I also canceled the Amex Blue Sky card as it was no longer serving any purpose for me.
YEAR: 2016
- I opened 6 Amex cards: The Hilton Honors Surpass card for the welcome offer and elevated rewards categories, the Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card to earn more flexible Membership Rewards points, another Hilton Amex card with no annual fee, the Amex Platinum Card which only had a $450 annual fee at the time, the Amex EveryDay Card for the 0% APR offer, and the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card which had a $195 annual fee at the time. I also canceled 2 credit cards later in the year: the SPG card and the Hilton Honors Surpass.
YEAR: 2017
- I added 3 new Amex cards: the Starwood Preferred Guest Business card, the Amex Business Platinum Card, and the Amex Business Gold card.
YEAR: 2018
- This time I added the Schwab Platinum Card in order to redeem Amex Membership Rewards points at a rate of 1.25¢ each for cash back (now 1.10¢), the SPG Luxury Card for a limited-time opportunity, the Amex Blue Business Plus card to earn 2X Membership Rewards points on all purchases, and the Amex Green Card (back then it only earned 1X points on all purchases, so a lot less compelling that today’s version!). I also canceled 6 card accounts.
YEAR: 2019
- I applied for the Hilton Honors Aspire Card directly AND upgraded a previously opened Hilton Honors card ($0 annual fee) to a second Hilton Honors Aspire Card. That provided me with 2 opportunities to earn 15,000 Hilton Honors points, a couple Hilton Honors free night rewards, $1,000 in credits, and more! I also opened the Amex Business Green Rewards Card, the personal version of the Amex Gold Card, and the Amex Platinum Card. I closed the Amex EveryDay Card.
YEAR: 2020
- I opened 1 Amex credit card (the Amex Blue Business Cash) and 1 Amex charge card (the Amex Business Gold Card). I also closed both of my Hilton Honors Aspire accounts, one of which was downgraded to the Hilton Honors American Express Card with no annual fee a bit earlier to determine if I wanted to keep at least 1 Hilton credit card open.
YEAR: 2021
- I added 3 Amex Business cards (2 Platinum, 1 Gold, both under Amex No Lifetime Language Offers). I proceeded to close out my Amex Business Green Rewards Card.
YEAR: 2022
- I opened the Hilton Honors Business credit card, another Amex Business Gold Card, and the Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card. 5 Amex accounts got closed, which I discussed in a separate video.

https://youtu.be/akdtsCzX28c
🎬 VIDEO - Bank of America PREMIUM REWARDS Credit Card Review! (PLUS Bank of America Preferred Rewards!):
https://youtu.be/YIobZ4be_HI
Many of you may have seen my previous video about the 8 reasons why I don’t like Bank of America credit cards. Well, that sentiment still holds true as of December 2022, however, I decided to apply for the Bank of America Premium Rewards card credit card anyway :D
Here’s why…
1. The current welcome offer to earn 50,000 points is worth $500 towards travel or cash back. With an annual fee of $95, that bonus alone will be $405 profit. Since we’re getting toward the end of the year and holiday shopping time, I wanted the welcome bonus to help cover the cost of buying gifts rather than using earned income.
2. I wanted to get first-hand experience using personal Bank of America credit cards that earn points. People often ask me questions about BOA credit cards that are difficult to answer without having the cards myself (e.g. “Can I redeem Bank of America points for cash back into an external checking account?”). Getting my first ever personal BOA credit card will allow me to better understand how the product and rewards work so I can answer people’s questions.
That said, if you’re in the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program (separate from credit cards and requiring account balances to be met), then you’ll receive a handful of benefits, including elevated rewards earnings with Bank of America credit cards. Those elevated rates CAN make BOA credit cards quite good, especially for cash back. On the travel side, the program also makes some cards more competitive to the Capital One Venture card and Chase Sapphire Preferred card, but without transfer partners.

American Express makes some of the best credit cards on the market. Whether you choose their cash back credit cards or travel credit cards, there’s likely a product that will fit your wants and needs. However, many of their cards carry high annual fees, some of which offer credits to earn back some of those fees throughout the year. Even still, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting enough value from the cards you have each year in order to win.
As someone who has a variety of Amex credit cards, it was time to do some cleaning up. Here are the 5 cards I canceled:
1. Amex Blue Business Cash: I originally applied for this card for the $500 welcome offer, 2% cash back on up to $50K spend per year, and the $0 annual fee. I canceled the card because I preferred to earn 2X Amex Membership Rewards points, I didn’t like how it automatically redeemed my cash back every month, and I wanted to free up room to add another Amex card in the future.
2. Amex Business Gold Card #1: I got this card for 2 main reasons, (a) for the welcome offer and (b) to earn 4X Amex Membership Rewards points on U.S. advertising spend. At the time, I was spending around $2K+ per month on advertising for another company, so it was a great way to earn points on that spend. However, now that I’m no longer working with that company and I don’t currently have ad spend of my own, I was unable to justify the $295 annual fee. So, I closed the account.
3. Amex Business Gold Card #2: I applied for this card for the welcome offer in Year 1 as it was an Amex No Lifetime Language offer. Similar to the first one I got, I was not able to make sense of the $295 annual fee going forward, so I closed it.
4. Amex Business Platinum Card: My reason for getting this card was for the 150K offer and several credits I could use throughout the year (e.g. $200 Air Incidental Fee credit, $200 Dell credit). However, the annual fee increased from $595 to $695 and additional credits were added that I didn’t value, so I let this card go.
5. Amex Platinum Card (personal version): This card was actually an upgrade from the Amex Gold Card. American Express offered me 50K points after spending $3K in 3 months as part of the offer, so I took it as it covered the $550 annual fee at the time and all of the other credits / benefits (e.g. $200 Air Incidental Fee credit, $200 Uber Cash, $100 Shop Saks with Platinum) would be profit. However, the annual fee increased to $695 and new credits were added that didn’t fit in with my spending habits. For that reason, I chose to cancel the card.
All that said, I’ve been with Amex since 2013 and I still have a handful of cards open with them that I find great value in. Each year, it’s a wise decision to look over the credit cards you have open across all issuers and determine whether you should keep, downgrade, or cancel each one.
That said, be sure to keep all American Express cards open for at least 1 year to avoid signup bonus clawbacks and other potential penalties.

BEST CREDIT CARD #1: Capital One SavorOne Card
- I recently applied and got approved for this Capital One credit card. In fact, I’ve had my eye on it for a number of months because it’s one of the best long term keeper credit cards with no annual fee. It has an insane cash back rewards structure, ranging from 1% - 10%, in very useful categories. It also offers a complimentary Uber One membership, travel accident insurance, extended warranty coverage, and no foreign transaction fees. AMAZING for a no-fee cash back credit card!
BEST CREDIT CARD #2: Capital One Venture X Card
- Ever since its release in November 2021, it has proven to be one of the best travel credit cards ever made for people who want solid value plus simplicity. The current welcome offer will award you with $750 towards travel, and you can earn 2X miles at a minimum on all purchases (up to 10X in select categories). Add in airport lounge access via Priority Pass along with Capital One Lounges and Plaza Premium Lounges, a $300 annual travel credit, a 10,000-mile anniversary bonus, AND MORE, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a great card. Although it has a $395 annual fee, it’s possible to offset that with a single trip.
BEST CREDIT CARD #3: U.S Bank Altitude Reserve Card
- This is a severely underrated credit card. The signup bonus along will award you $750 in value towards travel, but its true superpower is the ability to earn 3X points on all mobile wallet transactions! That means wherever you see the ability to use Apple Pay, Android Pay, etc., you could be earning 3X points on that purchase (worth 3% cash back or 4.5% towards travel). The second superpower is how the card makes all points worth 50% more for travel redemptions compared to cash back. The annual fee is $400, but it comes with a $325 credit that can be used towards virtually any travel purchase or dining at restaurants.
BEST CREDIT CARD #4: Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card
- This card works best as part of the Chase Trifecta (i.e. in combination with the Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Freedom Flex, or Chase Ink Business credit cards with no annual fee). It makes ALL Ultimate Rewards points earned across all cards worth 25% more compared to cash back.
BEST CREDIT CARD #5: Citi Premier Card
- This credit card is a MAJOR win right now for its signup bonus of 80K points (worth $800 towards travel, cash back, or gift cards) and SIX rewards categories that all earn 3X points!
BEST CREDIT CARD #6: Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card
- For a $450 annual fee, you can receive 2 x $250 credits, another $100 credit, Hilton Honors Diamond status, a Priority Pass membership, strong rewards earnings at Hilton Hotels (14X points = ~ 7% return), an annual free night certificate, and more!

Traveling is fun. Traveling the world for free (or close to it) with credit cards is also fun. And traveling as STRESS FREE as possible makes both situations THE MOST FUN.
There are a lot of things that can get in the way of having a smooth airport experience. So to help you have smooth sailing, here are my general guidelines along with 10 factors to consider before your next trip.
HOW EARLY SHOULD I GET TO THE AIRPORT?
Generally, I’d suggest getting to the airport about 1.5 hours prior to boarding for DOMESTIC FLIGHTS. Then for INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS, I’d bump that up to 2.5 hours prior to boarding.
10 THINGS TO CONSIDER
1. Which time of the year is your trip? Seasonality can make a big difference, so keep things like summer vacation, spring break, etc. in mind. If you’re traveling during a time when many others are too, then allow extra time.
2. Which day and time are you leaving? If you’re traveling during peak business travel hours, add extra time.
3. Out of which airport will you be departing? Usually the larger international airports will take longer to navigate from one terminal or gate to another. There will very likely be a lot more people passing through, too.
4. Are you flying domestically or internationally? For those international flights, give yourself more time.
5. Do you have carry-on luggage, or will you be checking bags? Carrying on makes things really easy. If you need to check bags, there’s a change you’ll have to wait in a line to complete the process. Add additional time if you need to check your bags.
6. Do you have any priority benefits? Here I’m referring to things like priority check-in, priority security, etc. (that is, the things that can get you through the airport queues faster). These benefits are usually obtained from an airline credit card, attaining elite status, or purchasing the benefits a la carte (if available).
7. Do you plan to enroll in an expedited ID / security / clearance program? If you plan to have your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry interview prior to your flight, be sure to factor that in.
8. Are you already enrolled in an expedited ID / security / clearance program? If yes, then you’ve got a good shot at predictably getting through security checkpoints, customs, etc. a lot faster.
9. Are you traveling with other people, and are they already enrolled in an expedited ID / security / clearance program? If they don’t have the priority benefits that you do, then you’ll need to wait for them anyway. So, be sure to arrive early enough to accommodate everyone traveling with you.
10. Do you want to eat or shop at the airport? Do you want to visit an airport lounge? Again, this will add time, too. If I plan to visit an airport lounge, I usually like to stay anywhere from 45 - 90 minutes. There are many travel credit cards that provide lounge access, and they can really enhance your airport experience. Some of these credit cards include the Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, Capital One Venture card, and others. If you're interested in accessing airline lounges (i.e. the ones that are operated by the airlines, like the American Airlines Admirals Club, United Club, and Delta SkyClub), then usually the top-tier airline credit cards will provide you with the access you're looking for.

🎬VIDEO: Beginner’s Guide to Transfer Partners for BIG VALUE: https://youtu.be/ae1WayyrwnE
🎬VIDEO: Capital One Lounge Review & TOUR! https://youtu.be/0jemrbhTc_U
Both of Capital One’s Venture cards are great in that they offer flexible rewards without a lot of complication. The rewards and benefits are straightforward and easy to put to use each year.
However, ever since the Capital One Venture X was released in November 2021, a lot of people noted how similar it was to the older Venture Rewards card. The ‘X’ had a bigger annual fee of $395 and some extra benefits, but once you use them, the stripped down ‘X’ ended up looking quite similar to the regular Venture. That said, the smaller differences in the rewards earning rates and level of benefits (plus their access privileges) DO make a difference, so let’s compare them!
In general, I’d say that the Capital One Venture Rewards card is best for people who:
- Want an effortless ‘catch all’ credit card for travel.
- Will book flights / hotels / cars thru the Capital One Travel portal.
- Want to earn rewards without managing benefits.
- Have lounge access via a different card (or don’t care about it).
I’d then say that the Capital One Venture X card is best for people who:
- Want a ‘catch all’ credit card for travel w/ extra benefits.
- Will book flights / hotels / cars thru the Capital One Travel portal.
- Want a higher point earning rate.
- Want airport lounge access.
- Want to share benefits with others as Authorized Users.
- Capital One Lounge, Priority Pass, insurance protections, etc.
- Want cell phone protection.
That said, you should probably AVOID both credit cards if you…
- Don’t travel much (these are travel credit cards after all).
- Want to earn cash back rewards (the redemption rates for cash back are really bad, plus you have annual fees you’ll need to deal with).
- Aren’t willing to pay an annual fee (there are tons of great cash back credit cards without annual fees).
- Are focused on earning elite status with hotel chains and/or rental car companies (usually hotels or rental car companies will not honor elite benefits or allow you to earn elite credits when booking through portals).
- Prefer to book travel directly or outside of a bank portal (better customer service, plus the ability to earn status and have it recognized for hotels and rental cars. This does not apply to airline bookings as you can still earn elite status using portals).
The Capital One Venture X authorized user benefits are perhaps one of the biggest differentiators. Although we will not be covering them in detail in this overall comparison video, it could make for a good secondary video in the future.

The Amex Trifecta consists of 3 travel credit cards, and they can be whichever 3 you choose as long as they all earn Amex Membership Rewards points (that way you can combine them all). The 3 I’ve chosen to compare in this video include the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, and the Amex Blue Business Plus card. The reason is that this includes Amex’s most premium card with the greatest amount of travel benefits, plus a good mid-tier card for everyday use on things like groceries and eating out at restaurants, and a solid catch all credit card that earns 2X points on all purchases. Of course, there’s also the Amex Green Card that you can swap in if you live spend a lot on transit (i.e. Uber, Lyft, taxis, toll roads, parking, etc.) and also the Amex Everyday card and Amex Everyday Preferred credit cards that have a unique feature that offers bonus points based on the number of transactions you make per billing cycle. Furthermore, you can also add in Amex business credit cards.
The Chase Trifecta consists of 3 travel credit cards, and they can be whichever 3 you choose as long as they all earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points (this allows you to combine all of your points into 1 balance). The 3 I’ve chosen to compare in this video include the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, Chase Freedom Flex Card, and the Chase Freedom Unlimited card. This offers a solid 3-card setup because it includes Chase’s most premium card with high point earning rates coupled with strong travel benefits. The other 2 Freedom credit cards earn rewards in other categories, as well as provide a base of 1.5X points on all purchases. If you find that the Chase Sapphire Preferred or one of the Chase Ink business cards work better for your needs, you can also substitute those in.
While one credit card strategy or setup is not necessarily better than the other in all areas, they do shine bright in different areas. So, what it really comes down to is identifying where you spend the most amount of your money, what your travel habits are like, and what reward preferences you have. Then you can match your world to the right credit cards (going the other way around doesn’t make sense, that is, getting cards and trying to force them to work for you when they really don’t).
Fortunately, either setup will provide you with some of the best credit cards for travel, and give you benefits like airport lounge access, access to transfer partners, strong value for your points, elite status, and more (just in different areas to different degrees).
So, enjoy the video! I hope it helps you discover your next potential credit card strategy so you can save money on travel and end up with more money in your pocket!

There are many reasons why your credit scores can be different. Here are a few of them!
1. There are different Credit Reporting Agencies (CRAs, aka 'credit bureaus'). These include nationwide CRAs like Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. There are also alternative or supplementary CRAs like Innovis, LexisNexis, and others. Then there are Check & Bank Screening agencies, employment screening agencies, tenant screening agencies, and MORE!
2. There are different credit scoring models. These include the FICO Score, VantageScore, proprietary scores that certain banks may come up with, and others.
3. Different credit scoring models weight credit factors differently. That said, your payment history and credit utilization are very important.
4. Different credit scoring models may have different scales or ranges. For example, FICO scores range from 300-850 for base scores and also go from 250-900 for industry-specific scores. The VantageScore models 3.0 and higher go from 300-850 and do not have industry-specific scores.
5. There are different credit scores for different industries. There are credit scores for credit card lending, credit scores for auto lending, and credit scores for mortgage lending.
6. FICO Score models vary BY and WITHIN industries. For instance, there are a variety of models for FICO Credit Score, FICO Auto Scores, and FICO Mortgage Scores.
7. Lenders (e.g. banks) may pull from different bureaus in different regions.
8. Lenders may choose to use different FICO Score models. One bank may prefer FICO 8 while another prefers FICO 9.
9. Some lenders may only report to 1 or 2 CRAs (‘bureaus’).
10. Credit reports may get updated at different times.
Here are some interesting things I noticed when checking my credit scores with different apps on November 04, 2022:

- VantageScore 3.0 (Equifax)

When the Amex Centurion Card came out, it made metal credit cards cool, secretive, and elite. Nowadays, you can find metal credit cards at every price point, from nearly $700 down to $0.
Whether it’s a cash back credit card or a travel credit card, there are options out there that can help you achieve your financial or travel goals.
Here are my Top 9 Picks for the Best Metal Credit Cards right now, ranked from the highest annual fee to the lowest:
1. Amex Platinum Card: This is among the best travel credit cards due to the amount of perks it gives you. Since it earns Amex Membership Rewards points, this includes access to Amex Transfer Partners for potential big redemption value; Airport Lounge Access to the Amex Centurion Lounge, Priority Pass Lounges, the Delta SkyClub network, and more; Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status and Hilton Honors Gold Status; a $200 Hotel Credit, a $200 Uber / Uber Eats Credit, and MUCH more.
2. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card: This is THE CARD to have for Marriott loyalists / frequent stayers. With automatic Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status, 25 Elite Night Credits each year, and a Marriott Free Night Award with a point value up to 85K points, this hotel credit card can really elevate your stays.
3. Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card: This is THE CARD for Delta frequent flyers, especially if you care about elite status. It comes with a Delta Status Boost, Delta MQD Waiver, airport lounge access to both the Amex Centurion Lounge and Delta SkyClub networks, an annual Delta companion pass up to a 1st Class seat, priority benefits, and more!
4. U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Card: A phenomenal travel credit card for its simplicity. The best feature is perhaps the ability to earn 3X points on all mobile wallet transactions, allowing you to earn points very quickly to save money on travel. While it does not provide access to transfer partners, points are worth 1.5¢ each towards travel.
5. Capital One Venture X Card: Capital One packed high value into an easy to use credit card. You get access to Capital One Transfer Partners, a guaranteed flat-rate redemption value of 1¢ per mile that can offset virtually any travel purchase, access to the Capital One Lounge network (plus Priority Pass and Plaza Premium Lounges), a Capital One Anniversary Bonus of 10,000 miles, and more.
6. Amex Gold Card: Great metal credit card for foodies! Earn 4X at Restaurants Worldwide (plus takeout and delivery in the U.S.), plus 4X at U.S. Supermarkets (up to $25K spend per year), as well as a $120 Dining Credit and $120 Uber Cash benefit.
7. Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card: Excellent mid-tier airline credit card for elevating your Delta elite status, getting discounted rates ($39) to the Delta SkyClub, and annual companion pass, and priority benefits.
8. Chase Sapphire Preferred: Awesome long-term keeper card that earns valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points, provides access to strong transfer partners (including World of Hyatt), and makes all points worth 1.25¢ each towards travel at a minimum.
9. Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card: For a cash back credit card with no annual fee, this card is EXCELLENT for big Amazon spenders by earning 5% cash back. Also enjoy no foreign transaction fees.

🔗 PRESS RELEASE - Capital One Lounges Now Arriving at Airports: https://www.capitalone.com/learn-grow/more-than-money/capital-one-lounges-arriving-in-airports/
Looking for one of the best credit cards for lounge access? Check out the Capital One Venture X card! In addition to Priority Pass lounges and Plaza Premium lounges, it gives you access to a brand new network: Capital One Lounges.
Yes, there’s only one location right now (Capital One Lounge DFW), however, there are more on the way as the network continues to get built out (i.e. Washington Dulles International, IAD, and Denver International Airport, DEN).
Here are some of the amenities you may see:
- Comfortable seating
- High-Speed Wi-Fi
- Dining Stations / Cooked Meals
- Grab & Go Food
- Bar (wine, beer, cocktails)
- Coffee Bar
- Quiet Zones to Work
- Relaxation Rooms
- Luggage Lockers

🎬VIDEO: Chase 5/24 Rule Explained: https://youtu.be/muJEN8C86JY
There's no doubt that Chase has some of the best credit cards you can apply for, so if you want one, why not put yourself in the best position possible to get it? :D Whether your goal is to create a Chase Trifecta of your own (i.e. 3 Chase credit cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points in different ways so you can combine them all) and/or to get some of the best airline credit cards or some of the best hotel credit cards, Chase has a bunch of options - and this includes some of the best credit cards for beginners in their first year of building credit (however, for your absolute first credit card, it may be better to look to other issuers who may have easier standards, esp. if you don't have a banking relationship with Chase).
If you're interested in earning travel rewards and/or cash back from Chase while building your credit score along the way, this video should help you out. Let's begin!
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
You must be at least 18 years old to qualify for a Chase credit card (age may vary in select regions).
CHASE 5/24 RULE
Chase will automatically deny a credit card application if you’ve opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the last 24 months that appear on your credit report.
CHASE 2/30 RULE
You may get approved for 2 Chase credit cards in a 30-day period.
CHASE 1/30 RULE FOR BUSINESS CARDS (CHASE 1/30 GUIDELINE)
You may get approved for 1 Chase business credit card in a 30-day period.
CHASE 24 MONTH RULE | CHASE SAME CARD RULE
You cannot get a Chase credit card and signup bonus if:
- You currently have the same credit card open.
- You had the same credit card before & got a new cardmember bonus on it within the past 24 months.
CHASE 24 MONTH RULE | CHASE SAME FAMILY RULE
You cannot get a Chase credit card and signup bonus if:
- You currently have any card in the same brand family open.
- You had any card in the same brand family before & got a new cardmember bonus on it within the past 24 months.
- Does not apply to same-brand business cards.
CHASE 48 MONTH RULE | CHASE 1 SAPPHIRE RULE
You cannot get a Chase Sapphire-branded credit card and signup bonus if:
- You currently have any Sapphire-branded card open.
- You had any Sapphire-branded card before & got a new cardmember bonus on it within the past 48 months.
CHASE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CREDIT CARDS | HOW MANY CHASE CARDS CAN I HAVE?
- No known limit.
- Chase may limit the total amount of credit extended to you across your card accounts.
CHASE CREDIT SCORE REQUIREMENTS | CHASE CREDIT SCORE NEEDED
- Not published & may vary by card. I’d personally want to have:
- 680+ for Chase-branded cards with no annual fee.
- 670+ for co-branded cards.
- 700+ for Chase-branded cards with annual fees.
- 700+ for Chase-branded business cards.
CHASE CREDIT PULLS / HARD INQUIRIES
Chase is known to do hard credit pulls for all new credit card applications, even if you already have a preexisting card relationship. (At the time of this video, Chase credit limit increases are usually hard pulls if requested, too).
CHASE RECONSIDERATION LINE
Personal Credit Cards Phone #: (888) 270-2127
Chase Business Cards Phone #: (800) 453-9719
WHAT I DO BEFORE APPLYING FOR A CHASE CREDIT CARD…
1. USE EXISTING Chase cards, keep balances low.
2. LOOK AT current balances. If any are high, pay them off.
3. IDENTIFY the type of card I want (e.g. co-branded, Chase-branded, personal, business).
4. CHECK if I’ve had the card before.
5. LOOK UP additional rules for that card; make sure I’m in compliance.
6. MAKE SURE I’m below 5/24.
6. APPLY!

🎬VIDEO - Watch Me Apply - Amex Blue Cash Everyday!
https://youtu.be/bYWjFLXC2xs
The Amex Blue Cash Everyday card is basically the little brother to the Amex Blue Cash Preferred. Ever since American Express refreshed the card with new benefits in July 2022, it’s now become one of the best cash back credit cards available at the moment!
It awards 3% cash back at U.S. Supermarkets, U.S. Online Retail purchases, and U.S. gas stations, each one capped at $6,000 spend per year (then 1% until it refreshes the following year).
I’m also happy to say that the $25 minimum redemption requirement is GONE :D
As an additional note, I had the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card before. That account was closed back in April 2018, so roughly 4.5 years ago.
You may be familiar with the ‘Amex Lifetime Rule,’ which says that you cannot receive a welcome offer if you currently “have or have had” that Amex credit card before.
However, that ‘lifetime’ is only as long as Amex’s system keeps track of your previous accounts. There’ve been data points that American Express may only look back around 4-5 years.
Furthermore, the Amex Pop Up window should appear if you’re ineligible for a signup bonus.
I didn’t receive that pop-up, so there’s a good chance that I’ll be able to get the bonus again! (Though we’ll have to wait until I meet the spend requirement first) :D
Meanwhile, I look forward to using this new cash back credit card for a lot of my online purchases that would only earn 1% - 2% on other cards.
As part of an overall credit card strategy, using this one along with others like the Citi Custom Cash, Citi Double Cash credit card, Chase Freedom Flex, and others can make for a really strong cash back setup covering a variety of different categories.
And best of all, this is a credit card with no annual fee (so all the rewards are profit in your pocket)!

ANNUAL FEE
- Unknown as of 10.13.2022
While we don’t yet know if this credit card will have an annual fee, if we look at the Amex Blue Cash Preferred card - which has a similar rewards model and also has a $95 annual fee - then there’s a good chance this card will, too.
This card also has some similarities to the U.S. Bank Cash+ card, which allows you to earn cash back in several choice categories from predefined lists.
On the whole, this seems like a solid new credit card, though we'll have to wait to see how the final product turns out once it's publicly released.

The Amex Platinum Card has a HUGE $695 annual fee, but with that comes a lot of credits and benefits to help you earn back that cost. The card earns Amex Membership Rewards points, which offer a great deal of flexibility for travel redemptions. Additionally, the Amex Platinum Card is a great choice if you’re looking for the BEST credit card for lounge access. It’ll get you into the Amex Centurion Lounge, Delta SkyClub, Priority Pass lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, and many more. You’ll also be given automatic Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status, Hilton Honors Gold Status, and various elite status levels with rental car companies. Be aware that if you get this card, make sure you’re willing to manage all the credits that give you rebates in different spending categories (and also make sure the credits fit in with your normal spend habits).
The Chase Sapphire Reserve costs a bit less at a $550 annual fee. It’s the better choice if you want the highest overall value for a rewards program (it makes Chase Ultimate Rewards points worth 1.5¢ towards travel at a minimum AND select retail categories via the Chase Pay Yourself Back feature). Consider this travel credit card if you tend to book travel outside of bank portals (i.e. directly with the airline or hotel websites) and if you want the best overall travel insurance and retail protections. In time, the Chase Sapphire Lounge network will be built out, giving you access to more airport lounges.
The Capital One Venture X is the newest option of them all and is also the most affordable with its $395 annual fee. Take a look at this card if you’re ok with using the Capital One Travel portal to book your trips and if you want to share benefits with others by adding them as authorized users (note: each one receives their own Priority Pass membership). It’s a fantastic card if you want the basics without working to get value (that is, there aren’t a bunch of credits to track). It also earns Capital One Miles, which are arguably one of the easiest point systems to use (thanks to the ‘point eraser’ feature that allows you to do simple redemptions for travel purchases as statement credits). Furthermore, the Capital One Lounge network, while very new, has already opened its first location at DFW airport. More locations are on the way!

Upon seeing that online retail category, I’ve had the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card on my ‘hot list’ of cards to apply for in the future. Very few credit cards offer elevated rewards for online shopping (another notable one is the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Card), so this is a major standout feature.
Furthermore, there aren’t many Amex credit cards with a $0 annual fee, and this is one of them. In fact, I’d argue it’s one of the best cash back credit cards available right now.
And best of all, since it earns cash back, it works well as part of a multi-card strategy. For instance, you could use it alongside the Citi Double Cash card, Citi Custom Cash card, Chase Freedom Flex card, and many others to help you cover a variety of different spend categories.
The fact that it’s also a credit card with no annual fee makes it a great long-term keeper card, too. That way you can keep it open for years to come, build positive credit history and increase your credit score, without having to pay anything for it.
Well…the day has arrived…it’s time to apply!
