There are 2 different types of store credit cards:
1. Standard ‘Store Credit Cards’ are closed loop, meaning they can only be used at 1 particular store, brand, or family of stores. They do no operate on the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover networks.
2. ‘Co-Branded Store Credit Cards’ are open loop. These DO run on the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover networks (look at which logo appears on the front or back), meaning they can be used anywhere those types of cards are accepted.
Some great examples of these 2 types are the Amazon credit cards. There are currently 4 personal versions: 2 Amazon Store Credit Cards that are closed loop and issued by Synchrony Bank and 2 regular Amazon Credit Cards that are open loop running on the Visa network and issued by Chase. Note: there’s also an Amazon Business Credit Card issued by Amex.
Compared to other credit cards, Store Credit Cards tend to have more limited rewards, offer signup bonuses that offer an immediate reward (e.g. 20% discount upon checkout), have higher APR rates, lower credit limits, and may have lower acceptance rates if they’re closed loop.
Store Credit Card PROS
- Easier to qualify & get approved
- Usually get an immediate discount upon opening
- May get strong ongoing rewards (3% - 5%) at a specific store
- Occasional bonus perks, like extra rewards, access to discounts, invite-only events, etc.
Store Credit Card CONS
- May have limited use (e.g. 1 store)
- Typically high interest rates
- Usually limited rewards
- May give lower credit limits
- May have limited / short-term value
Other ‘regular’ credit cards that offer excellent rewards for shopping include:
- U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards Visa Signature
- U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve
- Amex Blue Cash Everyday
Are store credit cards worth it?
YES if…
- The upfront discount is meaningful to you.
- You frequently shop at the store / brand.
- The ongoing rewards are valuable to you.
- You are building / rebuilding credit & are having difficulty getting approved for other cards.
- You get access to perks you couldn’t otherwise get.
NO if you…
- Don’t value the discounts / rewards.
- Don’t shop at the store / brand frequently.
- Can get approved for other, higher-value cards.
- Prefer more flexible cash back rewards.
- Prefer travel rewards.
Examples of good store credit cards:
- Amazon Prime Visa
- Costco Anywhere Visa
- Capital One Walmart Rewards Card
- Lowe’s Advantage Card
- Target RedCard
- TJX Rewards credit card

00:26 - General Requirements
4:51 - 48-Month Rule
5:27 - 2-3 / 30 Rule
7:26 - 5+ Card Rule
9:26 - 1/6 Rule
10:37 - Bucketing
12:55 - 3 Hard Pulls (Inquiries)
14:22 - Recent Inquiry / Account Sensitivity
14:57 - Checklist
Capital One 48 Month Rule
You’re not eligible for the card offer if you received a new cardmember bonus for the same card in the past 48 months.
Capital One 2-3 / 30 Rule
You’re not eligible for the card offer if you applied for a Capital One credit card 2 or more / 3 or more times in the last 30 days (may vary by card).
Capital One 5 Card Rule
You’re not eligible for the card offer if you have 5 or more open credit card accounts with Capital One. Currently applies to Capital One business credit cards as of this video's recording.
Capital One 2 Card Rule | Capital One 2 Card Limit | May not apply to everyone, if at all
It’s been said for years that you can only have 2 personal Capital One credit cards. It was also said that the following were excluded:
- Cobranded Cards (e.g. Walmart Rewards Card)
- Business Cards (e.g. Spark 1.5% Cash Select)
However, I (and others) have disproved this. See this video:
https://youtu.be/_SyJGPKKiE8?si=CTj15ZUdh24ugkdg
Capital One 1/6 Rule | Capital One 6 Month Rule | May not apply to everyone, if at all
It’s been said that you can get approved for 1 Capital One credit card every 6 months. This includes personal cards and small-business cards.
Capital One Bucketing
Capital One offers different versions of the same card for different credit score ranges.
If you get approved for a ‘lower tier’ version (e.g. fair credit, good credit), then you may not be able to:
- Get a credit-limit increase
- Get upgraded to a ‘higher tier’ version
- Likely applies to individual cards (not overall account)
- Only potential way out? Apply for a new Capital One credit card
Capital One 3 Hard Pulls | Capital One 3 Hard Inquiries
Capital One pulls from all 3 major credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) for each new credit card application. This means 3 new inquiries, but only 1 per report. It may be possible to freeze 1 report (either Experian or Equifax) and still get approved.
Capital One Recent Inquiry / Account Sensitivity
Capital One is known to be sensitive to recent inquiries & newly opened accounts. While not a hard rule, I’d personally want the following prior to applying…
- 0 new inquiries in the past 6 months
- 0 newly opened accounts in the past 6 months

00:27 - Amex RUINS Welcome Offers?!
6:42 - 2 NEW Wells Fargo Autograph Cards?! (Autograph Journey, Autograph Beyond)
7:46 - Apple Card ENDING! (Apple Savings, too?!)
NEWS #1: American Express is experimenting with an entirely new welcome offer strategy. You may see offers to earn “up to” 150,000 Amex Membership Rewards points on the Amex Platinum Card or “up to” 90,000 Amex Points on the Amex Gold Card. You won’t know what your offer is until you apply and see your offer. Fortunately, you’ll be able to accept the offer or retract your application (in which case there won’t be any change to your credit score or credit report).

NEWS #2: The Wells Fargo Autograph Card MAY get new branding, or 2 all new Autograph credit cards may be launching! In October 2023, Wells Fargo filed 2 new trademarks, 1 for “Wells Fargo Autograph Journey” and 1 for “Wells Fargo Autograph Beyond.” Doctor of Credit is reporting the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey will launch with a $95 annual fee and signup bonus to earn 60,000 points after spending $4K in the first 3 months.

NEWS #3: The Apple Card will likely no longer be issued by Goldman Sachs in the next 12-15 months, due to Apple requesting to exit their contract with Goldman for BOTH the Apple Card and the Apple Savings account. At this time, there’s no info about which card issuer will take over the Apple Card portfolio. Initial rumors mentioned American Express (currently unlikely) and Synchrony Bank (more likely).

00:52 - Trend #1
3:02 - Trend #2
7:30 - Trend #3
9:34 - Trend #4
10:37 - Trend #5
12:33 - Trend #6
With all of the different travel and cash back credit cards we have in the U.S. market, it’s great to have so many choices. However, there are some trends we’re seeing that can be quite frustrating because they make you work harder to justify having a certain credit card.
Here are my Top 6 Credit Card Trends that need to end ASAP!
Trend 1: Coupon Book Style of Credits
Some perfect examples of this are the Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, and the Amex Gold Card. Each of these have credits and benefits that act like coupons or discounts in certain spend categories or with particular merchants. They often require extra thought and a form of tracking on your part to make sure you’re using the benefits available to you in order to justify the annual fees of these cards.
Trend 2: Inconsistent Point Values
If you’ve ever looked at how to redeem Amex Membership Rewards points, you’ll see that there are many ways to do so. It’s nice to have a lot of flexibility, but the value you get can vary dramatically from one redemption type to another. For instance, redeeming Amex points for travel vs. cash back vs. online shopping can bring you more or less value.
Trend 3: Welcome Offer Games
Credit card issuers like American Express and Chase may show different signup bonus offers to different people (even at the same time)! This means you may or may not get a good (or the best) offer at any moment in time. Considering the high value of both Amex Membership Rewards Points (from the likes of the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, or Amex Green card) and Chase Ultimate Rewards points (from the likes of the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, or either of the 2 main Freedom Cards – Chase Freedom Flex or Chase Freedom Unlimited), you want to take extra caution to get great offers!
Trend 4: Overly Complicated Welcome Offer Rules
Getting a credit card signup bonus today can be complicated with all of the different rules from different issuers. Here are a few examples of well-known rules:
- Amex Lifetime Rule
- Amex Family Rule
- Amex 1/5 Rule
- Amex 2/90 Rule
- Chase 5/24 Rule
- Chase 2/30 Rule
- Chase 1/30 Guideline
- Chase 24-Month Rule
- Chase 48-Month Rule
Learn more about these rules in these videos…
1. NEW RULES! How to Get 100% APPROVED for Amex Credit Cards (Amex Credit Card Application Rules 2024): https://youtu.be/G3ksdsf3PN0?si=fXeWWaONYcoJegtZ
2. How to get APPROVED for Chase Credit Cards! (Chase Application Rules): https://youtu.be/mlGWG5btFmc?si=dmtmQQqqTJX_buer
Trend #5: Multiple Hard Inquiries for 1 Application
Capital One is best known for this; they pull from all 3 bureaus for each credit card application you submit. Frankly, 1 hard pull per credit card application should suffice.
Trend #6: Not Disclosing Minimum Application Requirements
Publishing requirements for things like minimum income, credit score, etc. would be immensely helpful. Unfortunately, it’s an extremely rare practice, at least in the U.S.

If you're wondering how to get airport lounge access, a Priority Pass membership might be exactly what you're looking for (although international travelers will likely get the most value as the majority of the locations are outside of the U.S.). However, a growing part of the network is access to Priority Pass restaurants, which can be an excellent alternative to a lounge.
That said, there's a wide variety of top travel credit cards that COME WITH Priority Pass (all you have to do is activate it)! This video will walk you through the main credit cards with Priority Pass, explain the different levels of access each one gives you, and then compare them against each other so you can determine which one best fits your needs.

13:23 - How to Tell Them Apart
When you log into your Priority Pass account, either via desktop / laptop or via the Priority Pass app, and search for lounge locations, the results will only show you the one(s) you can access. That means if your version does not provide restaurant access, then you will not see available restaurants when you search for Priority Pass locations.

00:45 - Reason #1
2:29 - Reason #2
4:22 - Reason #3
8:16 - Reason #4
10:56 - Reason #5
13:13 - Reason #6
15:23 - Reason #7
Have you ever thought applying for the SAME credit card? As strange as it may sound, there can be real benefits of having two of the same credit card in your wallet. Here are a few of them:
REASON 1: You want to get a second welcome offer (if rules allow). Getting a credit card signup bonus for a second time on the same card can be an excellent way to accelerate your points, miles, or cash back FAST! Just make sure you read about the credit card application rules and the offer terms to make sure you’re eligible.
REASON 2: You spend more than the monthly, quarterly, or yearly rewards limit. There are a number of credit cards that issue 3X - 5X points in various categories, but only up to a certain dollar limit. For example, both the Discover it Cash Back credit card and the Chase Freedom Flex offer 5% cash back in quarterly categories, up to $1,500 spend per quarter. The U.S. Bank Cash Plus card, Amex Blue Cash Everyday card, Amex Gold Card, and Citi Custom Cash cards all have spend limits that occur quarterly, yearly, or monthly. If you spend more than these limits, then having a second identical card to capture that additional spend can be a great advantage.
REASON 3: You can take advantage of duplicate benefits and/or credits. Having two Capital One Venture X cards means doubling the amount of "free" authorized users you can add, which is a fantastic way to share benefits with more people. You'll also have two $300 Travel Credits and two 10,000-mile anniversary bonuses to justify the $395 annual fee.
REASON 4: You maxed out the referral opportunities (and can do more). Both American Express and Chase have excellent referral opportunities that you can take advantage of each year. Each card you have can earn a referral bonus up to a certain amount. If you go beyond that amount, you won’t earn any more rewards, which is why it can be great to double up on those cards!
REASON 5: You want to maximize your rewards with different choice categories. Some credit cards allow you to choose your own rewards category (examples: Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card or the U.S. Bank Cash+ card). So, if you have 2+ of the same card, you can select different rewards categories on each one to maximize your earnings.
REASON 6: You need to product change to become eligible for another card. For example, if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Freedom Flex, you can downgrade your Sapphire Preferred to a second Freedom Flex and then apply for the Sapphire Preferred again (and get the bonus again, provided you’re under the Chase 5/24 Rule and have waited at least 48 months since you got your last Sapphire bonus).
REASON 7: You want to product change to lower (or $0) annual fee and still preserve your account history. For instance, if you have 2 Delta credit cards (like the Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Delta SkyMiles Platinum) that you no longer want or need, you can downgrade them both to the Delta SkyMiles Blue. That one has no annual fee, and doing this will keep your credit limits and credit history intact.

📝🎬 REVENUED BUSINESS CARD APPLICATION VIDEO:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWLBqDTSqsA&t=1s
Revenued is a revenue-based financing platform that helps businesses easily access the capital they need for growth. Instead of looking at credit history and score, they offer business cards and credit lines based on your business revenue. This means you can get working capital FAST.
You’re actually getting a bundle consisting of the Revenued Business Card itself as well as a Flex Line, which is linked to your Card.
- Card: Physical card to use for purchases, issued by Sutton Bank, Member FDIC, and powered by Marqeta. It’s NOT a traditional credit card or loan. Rather, it accesses your Flex Line.
- Flex Line: An unsecured open line of credit. Gives you fast access to cash by allowing you to borrow money (up to your approved limit) and pay it back it over time out of your sales revenue, plus a factor rate. The amount of your Flex Line depends on your business performance.

2. Flexible Spending Limits
- Easy limit increases that can grow with your business in real time.
- Option to request an increase via the portal.

- No hard pull
4. No Fees (Factor Rate Applies)
- No application fees
- No draw fees
- No annual fee
5. Simple Online Banking & Support
- Use the app or online dashboard to view your spending limit, payment calendar, transaction history & more.
- Dedicated account manager for support.
6. Individualized Factor Rates
- Get a factor rate based on your business performance. Typically between 1.1 - 1.5.
- Only applies once you’ve started using the funds.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Apply & get approved for the Revenued Business Card.
2. Revenued buys future receivables from your business. In other words, they buy a portion of your future business revenue at a discount and give you access to working capital in return (i.e. your Flex Line). That working capital becomes your spending limit.
3. Use the Card to make purchases.
4. Instead of a regular credit limit or prepaid card loaded with funds, the Revenued Business Card uses just-in-time (JIT) funding to cover your purchases, meaning it draws exactly the amount you need for every purchase from your Flex Line. Only pay for what you use.
5. Pay back the purchases you’ve made (plus a factor rate) on a daily or weekly basis out of the future sales of your business.

Effective November 15, 2023, the Wells Fargo Autograph card might become a lot more valuable! Here’s what I saw on my most recent credit card statement…
“A new online redemption option will be available for all Points-based Wells Fargo Credit Cards called Points Transfer. With Points Transfer, You will be able to redeem Your Points to transfer as miles, points or credits to participate in partner loyalty transfer programs.”
While we don’t yet know which Wells Fargo transfer partners will be available, it sounds like at least some of them will have a 1:1 transfer ratio.
We can only hope that they will be the same ones as seen on the Bilt Mastercard, but of course, Bilt / Wells Fargo wouldn’t want to sabotage that program either.
Stay tuned for more details coming from Wells Fargo and their revamped rewards program!

Here’s my best credit card strategy for Q4 2023!
1. Amex Gold Card: Fantastic card for food! I’ll be earning 4X on groceries at U.S. Supermarkets and redeeming my Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back via my Amex Platinum Card for Schwab (it gives me a 1.1¢ per point value, so a 4.4% overall return on grocery spend).
2. Bilt Mastercard: My top choice to pay rent (1X), earn rewards on dining (3X), and avoid the transaction fee on most rent payments! An excellent travel credit card with no annual fee and top-notch transfer partners.
3. Discover it Cash Back credit card: Right now, this credit card is earning 5% cash back at Amazon and Target on up to $1,500 in combined spend for the quarter. These are 2 retailers I use a lot. Remember to activate the categories.
4. Chase Freedom 5%: This is the original Chase Freedom card that runs on the Visa card network. It’s earning 5% back via PayPal, Wholesale Clubs, and Select Charities on up to $1,500 in combined spend for the quarter. A great choice for earning cash back on my Costco runs! (I wish I could’ve used the Chase Freedom Flex, but that one is a Mastercard and therefore isn’t accepted at Costco.) Remember to activate the categories, too.
5. U.S. Bank Cash Plus: This one allows me to earn 5% cash back on TV, Internet, and Streaming as well as on Home Utilities. A unique credit card that covers categories not seen on many other cards!
6. Citi Custom Cash Card: This one allows you to earn 5% cash back on your Top Spend category for each billing cycle, on up to $500 for that cycle, from a preset list of 10 different categories. For me, I’ll be using the card only for gas stations to guarantee it earns 5% there.
7. Citi Double Cash Card: For my purchases that would normally earn 1% on other cards, I’ll be using the Citi Double Cash to earn 2% instead. It earns 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay your bill.

🎬 VIDEO - Beginner’s Guide to Transfer Partners for BIG Value
https://youtu.be/ae1WayyrwnE
🎬 VIDEO - Chase 5/24 Rule Explained
https://youtu.be/muJEN8C86JY
Two Chase Ink Business credit cards have new welcome offers that match their highest ever! You can now earn 90K Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $6K in the first 3 months on both the Chase Ink Business Cash and Chase Ink Business Unlimited.
The value of these points is $900 for cash back or $900+ towards travel via the Chase Travel portal. The way to make them worth even more towards travel is by combining these cards with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or Chase Ink Business Preferred. Doing that will give you a 25% - 50% boost and unlock Chase transfer partners, too!
Fortunately, you don’t need a standard “business” to qualify. That is, there’s no requirement to have an LLC, partnership, or corporation. You can apply as an individual (i.e. as a sole proprietorship) and use your SSN instead of an EIN. As long as you have a side hustle / make money outside of a 9-5 job, then you may be eligible to apply for a business credit card.
The Chase Ink Cash also earns points in the following categories:
- 5% Lyft Rides (thru 3.31.2025)
- 5% Office Supply Stores*
- 5% Internet, Cable, Phone Services*
- 2% Gas Stations**
- 2% Restaurants**
- 1% Other Purchases
* Earn 5% on the first $25K in combined purchases per account anniversary year.
** Earn 2% on the first $25K in combined purchases per account anniversary year.
The annual fee is $95.
The Chase Ink Unlimited earns points in the following categories:
- 5% Lyft Rides (thru 3.31.2025)
- 1.5% All Purchases
Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1.7¢ each (on average) when redeemed via Chase Transfer Partners, 1.25¢ each via the Chase Pay Yourself Back feature (those categories can change over time, currently select charities thru 12.31.2023), and 1.0¢ each as cash back (i.e. statement credit or deposit to a checking account or savings account).

The Amex Platinum Card has new restrictions that may prevent you from getting the welcome offer on different versions of the card (e.g. the Schwab Platinum Card, Morgan Stanley Platinum Card, etc.). Here’s what the Offer Terms now say on the regular / vanilla Platinum Card:
“You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley or previous versions of these Cards. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.”
The language may vary slightly on each version. As of the posting of this video, I did not see similar language for the Morgan Stanley version. However, I'd still be cautious.
NEW RULE #2 – Amex Platinum Card Delta Sky Club Access
Starting February 01, 2025, the American Express Platinum Card will issue 6 complimentary visits to Delta Sky Clubs per Program Year (Feb. 01 – Jan. 31). You can get unlimited access if you spend $75,000 on your Amex Platinum Card per Calendar Year. Note: Amex will begin tracking your spend in the year prior (example: Spend $75K from Jan. 01 - Dec. 31, 2024) to unlock access in 2025.
- Source: https://www.delta.com/us/en/delta-sky-club/access
NEW RULE #3 – Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Family Rule
All of the personal Delta credit cards have restrictive language in their Offer Terms. This include the Delta SkyMiles Blue, Delta SkyMiles Gold, Delta SkyMiles Platinum, and Delta SkyMiles Reserve cards. Be sure to read them prior to applying for any of the cards to understand if you’re eligible for the welcome offer.
NEW RULE #4 – Delta SkyMiles Credit Cards: Access to Delta Sky Clubs
Starting Jan. 01, 2024, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex card will no longer offer any access to Delta Sky Clubs. Only the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card will grant you access up to 10 complimentary visits per Program Year (Feb. 01 – Jan. 31). Similar to the Amex Platinum Card, you can get unlimited access if you spend $75,000 on your Delta Reserve Card per Calendar Year. You’ll still receive 2 complimentary guest passes per Cardmember Year.

1:10 - Cards 1 & 2 (Citi Strata Premier | Citi Strata Elite) - We’ve been waiting for a replacement to the discontinued Citi Prestige Card, and it looks like we’re about to get it! The Citi Strata Elite is the planned successor. It will be a premium travel credit card, likely with elevated benefits like airport lounge access, credits to use with partner merchants (I'd imagine like what we now see on the Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard), and hopefully strong rewards multipliers to compete with (or outperform) the Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or the Capital One Venture X. My guess is that the current Citi Premier card will be rebranded (perhaps changed to some degree) to become the new Citi Strata Premier card. It will then become the mid-tier travel credit card offered by Citi.
4:47 - Cards 3, 4 & 5 (Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash, Essential, Elite) – Wells Fargo is launching 3 new business credit cards with the following names: Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash Mastercard, Wells Fargo Signify Business Essential Mastercard, and the Wells Fargo Signify Business Elite Mastercard. Each one will apparently offer a complimentary Priority Pass membership, given that the landing page to enroll is already live at this link: https://www.prioritypass.com/wellsfargosignify
Wells Fargo has been doing a GREAT job with reimagining their consumer credit cards so far. The Wells Fargo Active Cash is an excellent 2% cash back credit card, the Wells Fargo Autograph offers a bunch of high-value 3X point categories, and the Bilt Mastercard is one of the best travel credit cards available right now, even allowing you to pay rent without a transaction fee! All 3 of these cards have no annual fee.
Bilt Mastercard terms: wellsfargo.com/credit-cards/bilt/terms
Bilt Mastercard Rewards and Benefits: https://www.biltrewards.com/terms/rewards-and-benefits
8:58 - [Rumor] Card 6 ($250-$450 World of Hyatt credit card) – There’s talk that Chase / World of Hyatt may launch a premium Hyatt credit card in the future. Some users have been targeted with a survey from Chase asking about different benefits. The options mentioned on the blog post on FlyerTalk are as follows:
- Increased annual fee: $250, $350, or $450
- 3x points on your Top 2 spend categories
- 10 Elite Qualifying Nights (EQNs) credit instead of 5 EQNs
- Annual Cat. 1-5 free night certificate instead of Cat. 1-4
- $25K spend to earn an additional Cat. 1-5 certificate
- Ability to combine Cat. 1-4 certs to higher value certificates (options include 1-6, 1-8)
- Ability to extend free night certificates via spend or a flat 5,000 point fee
- Statement credits for Hyatt stays and on-premise expenses (e.g. F&B)
- World of Hyatt Explorist status for your first cardmember year, then Hyatt Discoverist thereafter
- Doubled milestone rewards post-60 nights (20k pts or 2 Suite Upgrade Awards per 10 nights)

00:39 - SECRET #1
5:02 - SECRET #2
8:29 - SECRET #3
11:14 - SECRET #4
13:31 - SECRET #5
15:22 - BONUS! (SECRET #6)
Amex Credit Card Secret #1: Points are automatically combined into 1 balance. When you earn Amex Membership Rewards points on a personal credit card (like the Amex Platinum Card or Amex Gold Card) or a business credit card (like the Amex Blue Business Plus or Amex Business Gold Card), ALL POINTS are pooled together into 1 balance as long as all of these cards are added to the same online account. This allows you to earn Amex points a lot faster by using the card that earns the most points for a particular puchase, and also to redeem for much larger redemptions.
Amex Credit Card Secret #2: You can get multiple Amex credit card with 1 inquiry! This is AWESOME because hard inquiries on your credit report can hurt your credit score. So, by avoiding more hard inquiries, you’re able to better maintain a higher credit score. It can also help increase your approval odds because some banks may deny your credit card application due to too many recent inquiries.
Amex Credit Card Secret #3: There’s only 1 way to redeem points for great value (select travel). Redeeming Amex points for maximum value is nearly always done via Amex transfer partners. This does require some time and strategy to build a favorable itinerary.
Amex Credit Card Secret #4: Amex welcome offers can vary widely (even on the same card at the same time). If you don’t need an Amex credit card right away, it can be best to wait until you get targeted with a higher-than-normal offer.
Amex Credit Card Secret #5: Amex Offers can double your rewards (or better)…and they’re stackable. You can earn credit card rewards, Amex Offers, and shopping portals like Rakuten together to stack multiple rewards together. Note: Amex Offers are different than welcome offers / signup bonuses.
Amex Credit Card Secret #6 (Bonus!): Amex charge cards tend to be easier to get (referring to Amex cards with no preset limit, like the Amex Green Card or Amex Gold Card or Amex Platinum Card).

If you’re a beginner to credit cards and looking to build credit for the first time, you’ll likely want to begin with credit cards with easy approvals.
If you’re enrolled in a university, consider student credit cards by Capital One, Discover, and Bank of America. Otherwise, you can look into secured credit cards by the same banks (and also U.S. Bank).
My Top 7 Picks for the best beginner credit cards include the following:
1. Chase Freedom Rise - This is a really unique Chase credit card in that it’s designed for beginners (but it’s not exclusively for students and it’s not a secured credit card). You can increase your approvals chances by first opening a Chase checking account and having a balance of $250 or more. You can also earn a $25 bonus by enrolling in automatic payments and be eligible for a credit limit increase as soon as 6 months.
The following credit cards will likely be easier to get after building credit for about 1 year:
2. Chase Freedom Flex - This cash back credit card is excellent for rotating quarterly rewards that cover useful, everyday spend categories.
3. Capital One SavorOne Rewards - A great choice if you spend a lot at restaurants, supermarkets, and on entertainment.
4. Amex Blue Cash Everyday - Perhaps the best credit card for online shopping.
5. Discover it Cash Back - Another excellent card with rotating quarterly rewards in useful categories.
6. Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards - Choose your own 3% cash back category.
7. Citi Custom Cash - Automatically earn 5% in your top-spend category each billing cycle.
All of choices mentioned in this video are credit cards with NO annual fee, meaning they’re excellent long-term keeper cards as you build your credit score and credit history over the months and years to come.

Many people don’t realize that Wyndham and Caesars have a special partnership, and that with the right level of status, you can get a free stay at Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas EVERY YEAR!
Do note that “free stay” does not mean “free trip.” There are still costs involved even though the base room rate is $0.00. However, there are still plenty of methods to use credit card rewards to significantly reduce your out-of-pockets costs.
Even better, the Caesars status match process is very simple. It involves achieving elite status with Wyndham Rewards, matching that status to Caesars Rewards, and then calling the Atlantis Casino VIP Services line to book your trip.
I did it for the first time in August 2023 for 4 nights and had a fantastic time. Now it’s time to learn how to do it yourself!
00:00 - Intro
00:34 - STEP 0: Sign Up for FREE Accounts with Caesars Rewards and Wyndham Rewards if you haven’t already done so. You’ll need your loyalty account numbers for each one ready for the Wyndham-Caesars status match in the next steps.
1:04 - Overview
2:02 - STEP 1: Get Wyndham Rewards Elite Status (Platinum or Diamond). You can do this the traditional way by staying the required number of nights, etc. However, a much easier and faster method is by applying and getting approved for the Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus Card for automatic Platinum status or the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card for automatic Diamond status.
2:38 - STEP 2: Caesars Status Match (Platinum or Diamond). Go to this link to start the process:
https://www.caesars.com/myrewards/partners/wyndham_resorts
You’ll be matching your Wyndham Rewards status to Caesars Rewards.
3:44 - Taking Too Long? Do THIS! Go to the Wyndham Rewards website to contact the support team. They’ll be able to assist in expediting the Wyndham-Caesars status match.
6:10 - What You Get: Caesars Platinum Atlantis Package. Go to this link to learn more about the available packages:

Travel credit cards tend to have some incredible signup bonuses to help you pay for your next flight, hotel, rental car, or cruise. For example, I recently applied for the Citi AAdvantage Executive card, which has a welcome offer to earn 100,000 American Airlines miles after spending $10K in the first 3 months. Unfortunately, I received an instant denial, and the Citi reconsideration line also said “no.”
Looking back on my credit card application, I saw a couple areas I should have improved further before hitting that Apply button.
So, MY credit card DENIAL should hopefully help you with YOUR future credit card APPROVAL, if you learn from my mistakes!
I’ll also reveal my credit score, credit inquiries, and more throughout the video to give you an idea of my broader credit situation.
For now, I’m going to focus on avoiding new credit cards in the hopes of cleaning up my credit report a bit. That way, if/when the rumored Citi Strate Elite card launches, I’ll ideally have better approval odds at that time. I’ll also make sure to keep my credit card utilization down while also using my existing Citi credit cards in the weeks leading up to a potential application.

CREDIT CARD #1: Core Card
This is the credit card that gives you a high return in specific categories where you spend a lot of your money. First, identify the top-spend categories from your monthly budget. Do you spend a lot at supermarkets? Restaurants? Travel? Then, determine the TYPE of rewards you want. These include cash back rewards and travel rewards (points and miles). Also think about the benefits that are important to you (like credits, elite status, VIP access, airport lounges, discounts, etc.)
There are 4 Main Types of Credit Card Rewards:
1. Airline Miles: BEST value when redeeming with 1 airline and/or its airline partners. Example: United MileagePlus
2. Hotel Points: BEST value when redeeming with 1 hotel chain. Example: Marriott Bonvoy
3. Flexible Bank Points: Typically EQUAL value when redeeming for any flight, hotel, rental car, cruise, etc. Example: Wells Fargo points
4. Transferrable Bank Points: BEST potential value when converting FROM bank points TO partner airline miles or partner hotel points. Example: Chase Ultimate Rewards.
CREDIT CARD #2: Supplementary Card
This can also be called your “Boost Card” or “Top-Up Card.” Its purpose is to fill a gap of at least 1 significant spend category that your Core Card doesn’t cover & do so with a strong rewards multiplier.
CREDIT CARD #3: Everything Else Card
This can also be called your “Catch-All Credit Card” or “Non-Category Card.” This is a credit card that earns 1.5% - 2.0% (or better) on all other purchases. The goal here is to earn more than 1% cash back or 1X points on your purchases that do not fall into set categories on your other cards.

🎬 VIDEO - Beginner's Guide to Transfer Partners for BIG Value
https://youtu.be/ae1WayyrwnE
REASON 1 - Partner Benefits: I’ve gotta say, I just don’t use them. The Chase Freedom Unlimited benefits include special partnerships with DoorDash, Lyft, and Instacart. The Chase Freedom Flex has these same 3 benefits, but also adds an additional one from Lyft, plus Fandango and ShopRunner. The Chase Sapphire Preferred has similar benefits at a higher level (e.g. a longer subscription period), along with a Peloton benefit. Finally, the Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits take the ones on the Preferred to an even higher level (e.g. more Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned, more / bigger credits, etc.).
REASON 2 - Rewards Multiplier Overlap: The Chase Trifecta has a lot of rewards categories that are either identical or similar. For instance, there are overlapping categories for travel, Lyft, dining, and drug stores. While one Chase credit card might earn at a higher rate in a certain category, it’d be nice to see the cards with a more diverse rewards structure so it makes more sense to use them all together.
REASON 3 - Rewards Multipliers Aren’t Useful to Me: A lot of my monthly spend falls into categories that either Chase credit cards don’t cover, or that credit cards from other issuers do a better job at (e.g. a higher return).
REASON 4 - No Permanent Rewards for Gas, Groceries (in store), or Entertainment: For this reason, I turn to the likes of the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business card for gas (8X), the Amex Gold Card for groceries at U.S. supermarkets (4X), and the Capital One SavorOne card for entertainment (3%).
REASON 5 - Chase Freedom Unlimited 1.5X Isn’t That Competitive: There are other cash back credit cards and travel credit cards that earn 2X on all purchases, and some of those even offer access to transfer partners! That’s why I prefer to use the Capital One Venture X, Amex Blue Business Plus, or Citi Double Cash credit card to cover my spend that doesn’t fall into a specific category on a different card.

00:28 - Capital One SavorOne Rewards for Students: This is one of the best student credit cards I’ve ever seen! It offers a $50 welcome offer opportunity, no annual fee, excellent rewards for entertainment and food, as well as reimbursing you for an Uber One membership! It also has no foreign transaction fees.
2:46 - Capital One Quicksilver Rewards for Students: This student credit card earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases (along with a few other categories), meaning it’s a great choice if you spend most of your money on things that don’t fall into a regular rewards category on other cards. It also gives you a complimentary Uber One membership, no foreign transaction fees, and no annual fee. It has the same $50 signup bonus and terms as the SavorOne.
4:15 - Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards for Students: This cash back credit card has a really unique 3% category; it lets you choose how you earn that 3% every month! You can select from gas stations, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement / furnishings. There’s no annual fee and a $200 welcome offer after meeting the requirements.
7:03 - Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards for Students: Similar to the Capital One Quicksilver, this Bank of America credit card issues 1.5% cash back on all purchases. You can earn a $200 welcome offer and keep the card for years to come with no annual fee.
8:08 - Discover it Student Cash Back: For the new cardmember welcome offer, you can get the Discover Cashback Match, meaning Discover matches all the cash back you earned from the card after Year 1. Meanwhile, it earns 5% cash back in quarterly categories that rotate every 3 months, up to $1,500 spent per quarter, then 1% on other purchases. Right now in Q3 2023 it’s earning 5% on mobile wallet purchases and 5% at gas stations. The card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.
10:26 - Deserve Student Card: Formerly known as the Deserve EDU Mastercard, this card is currently unavailable to new applicants while they’re working on refreshing the benefits. It was an excellent credit card for international students with no SSN because you could use as ITIN. You can get on their notification list to be alerted when they relaunch it at this link: https://www.deserve.com/card-types/consumer-student-card
11:19 - Petal Credit Card (Petal 1 Rise, Petal 1, Petal 2): Currently, the 3 different Petal credit cards are great options for international students since you can apply with an ITIN (that is, an SSN in not required). Go to the Petal Card website to compare all 3 versions and to see which one is the best fit by using their Apply tool with no impact to your credit score / report.

8:26 - World of Hyatt Business Card
9:15 - U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve
12:06 - Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite
14:22 - Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard
15:31 - Visa Infinite Reserve Rewards+ Card by Elan Financial Services
Here are my thoughts about the worst credit card benefits right now…
1. The Chase Sapphire Preferred 10% Anniversary Bonus is not what you think it is. You get 10% back of your annual spend back in the form of POINTS! Spend $50,000? Get 5,000 points worth $50 cash back or $62.50+ towards travel! That’s only an additional 0.1% return!
2. The Amex Platinum Card SoulCycle At Home Bike Credit can be worth up to $300, but only if you comply with all of the restrictive terms and conditions for this single-merchant-single-product benefit.
3. Neither the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card nor the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card give you an annual free night just for having the card. To get one, you’ll have to pay a $250 annual fee and spend $15,000 on your card. Then, you’ll receive your certificate that’s capped at a redemption value of 50,000 points (combinable with up to 15,000 additional points if you have them). Compare that to the Hilton Honors Surpass Card (and business version), which have a $95 annual fee, the same $15,000 spend requirement, and give you an annual free night certificate with NO CAP!
4. The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card is the ONLY business hotel credit card that DOES NOT come with some form of anniversary free night! The ones from Hilton, Marriott, IHG, and Wyndham all do, however!
5. The Priority Pass Select membership that comes with the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve card only gives you 4 free visits for you and up to 4 guests per year for a $400 annual fee. Even the U.S. Bank Altitude Connect card (personal AND business versions) give you 4 Priority Pass visits per year, and those have a $95 annual fee (or $0 in Year 1)!
6. The Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card gives you a $150 Lifestyle Credit. Really?! A top-tier premium travel credit card with a private jet benefit advertising to high net worth / high income earners tries to market itself with $150 per year in “lifestyle” benefits?
7. The newly revamped Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard gives you up to $120 per year in Lyft credits, but only up to $10 per month, and only if you take 3 rides each month!
8. The Elan Visa Infinite Reserve Rewards+ Card took the ‘coupon book’ model to new heights with up to $20 per month in 4 select categories (but each one is capped at $5 per month)! Learn more at this link: https://card.myaccountaccess.com/credit/visa-reserve-rewards-plus.do
