In this video, I share my personal journey of why I decided to quit maximizing credit card rewards. For years, I was dedicated to squeezing every ounce of value out of my purchases by meticulously juggling multiple credit cards to earn the highest rewards possible. However, what started as a quest for financial efficiency soon became a source of stress and overwhelm.
I found myself constantly strategizing which card to use for each purchase, keeping track of rotating categories, and managing various bonus structures. While the allure of cash back, points, and travel miles initially motivated me, the burden of maintaining this complex system began to take its toll (i.e. WAY too much stress!).
As the pressure mounted, I realized that the pursuit of maximizing credit card rewards was consuming too much of my time and energy. The constant calculations, tracking, and optimizing detracted from the joy of everyday spending and saving, and ultimately, I was left with decision fatigue on too many purchases.
Ultimately, I made the decision to simplify my financial life and prioritize peace of mind over squeezing out every last cent of value from my purchases. I’m working on scaling back to using just a few cards that align with my lifestyle and spending habits.
In sharing my experience, I hope to spark a conversation about the hidden costs of maximizing credit card rewards and the importance of finding a balance that works for you. Join me as I discuss the lessons learned and the freedom I found in letting go of the credit card maximization race.

Are you ready to level up your credit card rewards game?
I sure am!
BUT…
I’m even more eager to SIMPLIFY my strategy. For too long, I’ve been using 5-8 cards on a routine basis, but something tells me the added value of doing so may not be that much greater than using 3-4 cards.
So, from cashback to travel points, I’ll break down the strategies that could help you earn more while spending wisely (and WITHOUT getting overwhelmed).
Choosing the right credit card setup is crucial for optimizing your rewards, but it's not just about the points or cashback percentages. Although I’ll be focusing ONLY on the rewards earning potential for each credit card setup, always keep in mind the importance of considering annual fees, the value of statement credits, and other benefits that each card offers. After all, what good is a high rewards rate if it's outweighed by hefty annual fees? The reason why I’m excluding them from our discussion in the video is because nearly everyone values benefits differently (some of which may allow you to completely justify the annual fees), and some of those benefits (including statement credits) may go totally unused some years or every year (that’s my case with the Amex Platinum Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred, for instance).
Whether you're a seasoned points collector or just starting to dip your toes into the world of credit card rewards, this video has something for everyone. Join me as I navigate the intricacies of maximizing your credit card rewards and help you make informed decisions about your financial strategy.
That said, it's essential to acknowledge the hassle factor that comes with managing multiple cards. From remembering payment due dates to tracking spending across various accounts, juggling multiple cards isn't for everyone. If that sounds like you, I’ve got some good news: Using a single credit card (or up to 2) can STILL be highly rewarding!

Introduction to Robinhood Gold Card: The Robinhood Gold Card is a credit card offered by the popular investment app Robinhood. It's designed to provide benefits tailored to the needs of investors and users of the Robinhood platform and may be an excellent catch-all since it earns 3% cash back on all purchases with no limit or category restrictions.
No Annual Fee: One of the standout features of the Robinhood Gold Card is that it comes with no annual fee. This can be attractive for users who want to maximize benefits without having to worry about yearly charges. HOWEVER, you must be a Robinhood Gold member in order to apply and get approved. Per the terms, “The [Robinhood] Gold Card requires an annual Robinhood Gold subscription to apply and maintain the card and does not include a 30 day free trial.” NOTE the ANNUAL requirement (i.e. you cannot do the $5/mo. option).
Cash Back Rewards: The card offers cash back rewards on purchases, which can be especially appealing for frequent users of the Robinhood platform. These rewards can be redeemed and used to further invest or for other expenses, like travel or shopping via the Robinhood portals.
Integration with Robinhood App: This integration allows users to seamlessly manage their card and track their rewards within the same platform where they manage their investments.
Interest Rates: The current APR is 20.24% - 29.99%, but it’s variable and can change over time.
Potential for Building Credit: For users looking to build or improve their credit score, responsibly using the Robinhood Gold Card can be a beneficial tool. Timely payments and responsible credit utilization can positively impact credit scores over time. Plus, you can add others regardless of their age while setting limits and controls to prevent giving them full access to your primary account.

Business credit cards have some major advantages, and a lot more people may be eligible to get them than you might think! Let’s cover some Q&As…
Q: Can you get a business credit card if you don’t have a Corporation, LLC, etc.?
A: Yes! You can apply as an individual (“sole proprietor”).
Q: Can you get a business credit card if you don’t have an EIN?
A: Yes! You can use your SSN instead.
Q: Can you get a business credit card without owning a business?
A: Yes! If you earn money independently from your day job, you may qualify.
Q: Can you get a business credit card if you haven’t made any money yet?
A: It’s possible! Some banks may give an approval even if you’re pre-revenue.
There are also some huge advantages to getting business credit cards. Some of them include:
1. Obtain more welcome offers. Getting credit card signup bonuses are a fast way to get a lot of points, miles, or cash back quickly, and business credit cards often have their own offers (many of which are higher than personal credit cards).
2. Build strong credit card strategies. Some business credit cards earn rewards in categories not covered by most personal credit cards (examples: utilities, advertising, office supply stores, and more). Even better, some of the Chase Ink business credit cards and Amex business credit cards earn the same type of rewards as some of the personal credit cards, so you can combine your points! Examples of these combinable points include Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, and Capital One Venture miles.
3. Separate business from personal expenses
4. Obtain “invisible credit” (i.e., most business credit cards do not appear on your personal credit report). So, they won’t affect your credit score in terms of utilization or the age of the account. They also won’t affect the Chase 5/24 Rule.
Just be aware that most small business credit cards still pull your personal credit.

The American Express Platinum Card has an insane amount of benefits (more than any other travel credit card I can think of)! For that reason, it’s easy to get lost in the perceived value of them all. But in the end, the question that you need to answer is, “Is the Amex Platinum Card worth it FOR YOU?” That is, do YOU use enough of the benefits in your everyday life to justify the current $695 annual fee?
We’re going to be ranking the benefits across 5 tiers, where the S-Tier is the top and the D-Tier is the bottom. Some of the benefits we’ll be discussing include the Amex Platinum 150K Offer, Lounge Access (incl. the Amex Centurion Lounge, Delta SkyClub, Priority Pass lounges, and more), the $200 Uber Cash benefit, the $200 Hotel Credit, the $240 Digital Entertainment Credit, Elite Status (incl. Marriott Bonvoy Gold elite status, Hilton Honors Gold elite status, and rental car statuses with Avis, Hertz, and National), and more. We’ll even rank the Amex Platinum Card’s ability to earn and redeem Amex Membership Rewards points to see if the overall rewards program is compelling (and for which type of person).
Of course, all of the rankings are from my perspective; you may value certain benefits differently. Regardless, seeing them all laid out in one place will give you a great visual perspective to think about them all collectively.

00:35 - Uncomfortable Truth 1
2:30 - Uncomfortable Truth 2
3:50 - Uncomfortable Truth 3
9:01 - Uncomfortable Truth 4
12:36 - Uncomfortable Truth 5
15:25 - Uncomfortable Truth 6
The credit card rewards game is a lot of fun. After all, it can put more money in your pocket and significantly reduce the cost of your next flight or hotel. However, there are at least 6 uncomfortable truths you need to understand in order to win the game.
First of all, realize that the rewards multipliers can mislead you. Just because the Hilton Honors Surpass American Express Card earns 12X points at Hilton Hotels, it doesn’t mean you’re getting more value than the 4X multiplier on the World of Hyatt credit card when staying at Hyatt Hotels. Believe it or not, the return on spend is practically equal.
Second, your points and miles lose value the longer you save them. This is especially true of airline miles (e.g. American Airlines AAdvantage miles, Delta SkyMiles, United Miles, etc.) and hotel points (e.g. Marriott Bonvoy points, IHG One Rewards points, etc.) because those programs see more dramatic devaluations … more often.
Third, you might not always earn as many points as you thought. Even if your Amex Gold Card earns 4X on dining worldwide or your Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 3X on streaming, how each business is set up on the Visa / Mastercard / etc. network (and the Merchant Category Code being used) is the ultimate determining factor if you’ll earn that 4X or 3X or not.
Fourth, airline and hotel credit cards are usually a losing strategy if your goal is to earn points and miles on your everyday spend. While there are exceptions to this, again, these are the programs that tend to lose value faster and more often when devaluations come around. That’s why it’s almost always better to earn bank-issued points (like Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Amex Membership Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, Bilt Rewards points, and Capital One Venture miles). All of those programs have transfer partners, so the value of the overall program isn’t tied to a specific airline or hotel program. Plus, you have way more redemption options.
Fifth, the credit card game has rules (and ignoring them hurts). Rewards expire at different times, credit card signup bonuses are not always available to everybody equally, etc.
Sixth, many credit card benefits are designed to make you spend more. Just look at the American Express Platinum Card benefits. Many are small credits that will not cover a full purchase, so you might be “tricked” into spending more than you otherwise would in order to use a benefit.

2:33 - Problem 2
4:14 - Problem 3
8:58 - Problem 4
11:21 - Problem 5
13:03 - Problem 6
PROBLEM 1: Elite Credit Cards Have Overlapping or Competing Benefits
Have you noticed that travel credit cards like the Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Capital One Venture X all have $300+ worth of travel credits? How about partner benefits with companies like Lyft, Uber, or DoorDash? Airport Lounge Access via Priority Pass? The list goes on. Many benefits are either identical or similar, and the amount of benefit convergence we’re seeing nowadays is increasing.
PROBLEM 2: Elite Credit Cards Have Increasing Annual Fees
The American Express Platinum Card used to be $450 per year. Then the annual fee went up to $550. Today, it sits at $695. The Chase Sapphire Reserve is at $550 right now, formerly $450. The Capital One Venture X hasn’t seen an increase to its annual fee yet, but it also has only been around since 11.09.2021. The Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card was recently updated and is now at $650 (previously $550). The Citi AAdvantage Executive Card went up to $595 after its refresh (previously $450). The United Club Infinite Card is still at $525 (up from $450), and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it climb higher to match what American Airlines and Delta are doing. The Hilton Honors Aspire Card is sitting at $550 (previously $450), and finally, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card skyrocketed to $650 (a $200 increase from its prior $450 annual fee). Carrying multiples of these premium credit cards continues to become more expensive over time.
PROBLEM 3: Elite Credit Cards Are Becoming More Like Coupon Books
We’re now seeing a lot of partner benefits that come in the form of statement credits to help you earn back some of the cost of your annual fee. However, these credits are often with specific merchants, so their use is limited – or nonexistent – for many people.
PROBLEM 4: Elite Credit Cards Have Limited Rewards Structures
You only need to look at the lower annual fee (and no annual fee) credit cards in order to see that many of them have better rewards multipliers to earn points on your regular spend. Some of them even earn valuable points (like Amex Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and Capital One miles), but they usually lack on the benefits side (or don’t offer access to transfer partners). That’s why rewards maximizers often have to get a variety of credit cards.
PROBLEM 5: Elite Credit Cards Have a Big Opportunity Cost
You might earn fewer points or less flexible points, or give up better prices or a variety of alternatives, due to having to use a portal in order to justify the annual fee so you can use the other benefits you care more about. You'll probably find yourself sacrificing your rewards rate to use certain benefits.
PROBLEM 6: Elite Credit Cards Make You Forget How Much You Actually Travel
Things like elite status, upgrades, and other benefits have more value the more often you’re able to use them. While these premium travel credit cards sound amazing on paper, if you only travel 1 or 2 times per year, did you really extract enough value out of that $500+ annual fee to make sense of having the card? Getting into the Amex Centurion Lounge, Chase Sapphire Lounge, or Capital One Lounge can be awesome, but maybe not if only once a year.

The Chase Ritz-Carlton Credit Card has received a new, “all-metal” design, BUT…
IT’S NOT ALL METAL!
It’s still the plastic-metal hybrid (i.e. a metal core with a plastic back), though it does have more metal than it used to.
The old, legacy Ritz-Carlton Credit card was a true, all-metal credit card and weighed 28g.
When it was discontinued to new applicants, it was downgraded to the plastic-metal hybrid design and weighed 13g.
And now, it’s keeping the same plastic-metal hybrid construction, but weighs 17g (roughly the same as the Amex Platinum Card, Capital One Venture X, and the latest version of the Chase Sapphire Reserve).
That said, none of the benefits are changing.
It still maintains the:
- Rewards Structure of:
6X Marriott Hotels
3X Dining / Car Rentals / Airline Purchases
2X Other rewards structure
- $300 Annual Travel Credit for qualifying air incidental purchases like seat upgrades, baggage fees, and preferred lounge passes
- 3 Club Level Upgrades each year on paid stays of up to 7 nights (terms apply)
- Automatic Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status
- 15 Elite Night Credits per year
- And more
While the Ritz Carlton Credit Card is still discontinued to new applicants, you can still get it via product change from the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless or Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful if you've had one of those for at least 1 year with a credit limit of $10,000.

Here’s my best credit card strategy for Q1 2024!
1. Chase Freedom Flex: This one is earning 5% back at Grocery Stores and on Self-Care / Spa Services on up to $1,500 in combined spend for the quarter when you activate. Remember, Chase issues cash back in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points. So, while they’re good for cash back, they can be worth even more when redeemed for travel if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or Chase Ink Business Preferred.
2. Discover it Cash Back credit card: Right now, this credit card is earning 5% cash back at Restaurants and Drug Stores on up to $1,500 in combined spend for the quarter when you activate.
3. Citi Custom Cash Card: This one allows you to earn 5% cash back on your Top Spend category for each billing cycle, on up to $500 for that cycle, from a preset list of 10 different categories. For me, I’ll be using the card only for gas stations to guarantee it earns 5% there. The cash back here is also issued in the form of Citi ThankYou points, which can have an even higher redemption value when combined with the Citi Premier Card and redeemed strategically via transfer partners.
4. U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Card: This one is on my mobile wallet because it earns 3X points on all mobile wallet purchases. Since Costco and Target accept Apple Pay, this is my #1 credit card for those 2 retailers. Those 3X points yield a return of 3% for cash back or 4.5% toward travel.
5. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card: I found a link to a spend offer via the Doctor of Credit blog to spend $4,000 by 3/15/2024 and earn an 85K Free Night Award. My card was eligible, so I registered and the spend begins!
- Doctor of Credit Post: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/ymmv-american-express-brilliant-spend-4000-earn-85000-free-night-certificate/
- Amex Registration Link: https://global.americanexpress.com/enrollments/oletenroll?campaignId=ghra1123&offerType=ghra01&locale=en-US
6. Marriott Bonvoy Business Card: I received a targeted offer via email to earn 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $1,500 by 3/31/2024, up to three times. I plan to do this once.

For a long time, the Amex Platinum Card has been among the heaviest metal credit cards you could get. But now, other credit card issuers are stepping up their game with more premium credit card offerings, including Capital One (Venture X) and Bank of America (Premium Rewards Elite).
Now, it’s Chase’s turn! They recently updated the Chase Sapphire Reserve to a new metal design. Although I don’t know the exact date when it occurred, I’ve seen a data point as early as Q2 2023. It’s still a hybrid plastic-metal construction, but there’s definitely more metal now.
In fact, while the Amex Platinum Card and Capital One Venture X both weigh 17g, the new Chase Sapphire Reserve weighs 16g (a nice increase from the older design’s 13g, which is also the same weight as the Chase Sapphire Preferred).
So, check out the Chase Sapphire Reserve unboxing to see what the new design is like!

📄👉LendingTree Study - What It Takes to Earn an 800 Credit Score
https://www.lendingtree.com/debt-consolidation/what-it-takes-to-earn-an-excellent-credit-score/
Building a strong credit score is about smart habits and consistent action. For this video, we'll ditch the drama and dive into the 5 essential steps you need to take to unlock your financial potential.
Step 1: Payment History is King (35% of Your Score)
On-time payments are the single most important factor in your credit score. Aim for 100% on-time payments for all your bills, credit cards, and loans.
Consider setting up automatic payments to avoid late fees and missed payments.
Track your due dates with apps, calendars, or reminders.
Step 2: Credit Utilization - Keep it Low and Steady (30% of Your Score)
Aim to use less than 30% of your available credit limit by the end of your billing cycle for good credit scores. Aim to use less than 10% of your available credit limit by the end of your billing cycle to reach top scores.
Paying down your balances as needed will help keep your utilization low.
Consider requesting a credit limit increase if you stay in control (i.e. you don’t spend more than you need to).
Step 3: The Length of Credit History is Crucial (15% of Your Score)
As long as it makes sense, strive to keep your credit cards open long term. Maintaining a good payment history over many years will boost your score in a big way.
The longer your track record, the higher your score can go. This requires some patience and there’s no quick fix here (other than becoming an authorized user on someone else’s account who has a strong credit history).
Step 4: Mix of Accounts (10% of Your Score)
Having a mix of credit accounts, such as credit cards and installment loans, can slightly boost your score.
However, focus on managing existing accounts responsibly before opening new ones. Only get what you want and need.
Step 5: New Accounts (10% of Your Score)
Don’t open new accounts too often. Each hard inquiry can temporarily lower your score, and new accounts can also decrease your overall average length of credit history.

When you look at the typical savings accounts and checking accounts from the major banks (like Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and others), you’ll notice that many of them have minimum opening deposits, minimum account balances ($1,500 is very common), monthly maintenance fees, and virtually NO INTEREST to be earned.
However, in more recent years, we’ve seen the rise of many online banks (that is, they have limited or no branch locations). Due to the significant cost savings associated with an online model, these banks can offer much higher interest rates than you normally see while still offering many of the services you need. For instance, a lot of banking can be done online these days, including mobile deposit of checks, sending or receiving funds, paying bills, and more. For this reason, the traditional model of going into a bank branch has become a lot less common, so a lot of people can do just fine with online-only banks. Some of these include Ally Bank, Capital One Bank, SoFi Bank, Discover Bank, and others.
I’ve been a user of both the traditional big banks and the newer online banks, and they’ve all got their pros and cons. That said, I find myself using the online banks a lot more these days, primarily to avoid minimum balance requirements, fees, and to earn interest at a higher rate.
Learn about the features and benefits of some of the best ones in this video to see if they’re right for you!

00:00 - Intro
00:54 - Part 1: Mixed Core
11:29 - Part 2: Airline Credit Cards
12:11 - Part 3: Hotel Credit Cards
15:42 - Part 4: New Cards
Part 1: Mixed Core
In the battle between the best travel credit cards and the best cash back credit cards, I’ve chosen to participate more on Team Cash Back. I’m even using Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back via my Amex Platinum Card (Schwab version)! However, that’s because 2024 will not be seeing much in the way of big international travel. Instead, I’ll be buying a new home, so the more cash I can save up, the better. Cards like the Chase Freedom Flex, Citi Custom Cash, and Discover it Cash Back all work together really well as part of my strategy. You’ll notice that my credit card setup lacks any sort of trifecta – that’s right – no Chase Trifecta and no Amex Trifecta! I’ve instead opted for a variety of different credit cards from many banks. Since I’m mostly focused on cash back, there isn’t an issue of using different rewards programs since I can indirectly combine all the cash in the end. That said, my general travel credit cards are the Bilt Mastercard and the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve. Some of the others earn their cash back in the form of points (e.g. Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Citi ThankYou points), so if I choose to many any travel redemptions, having points instead of pure cash back can be an advantage.
Part 2: Airline Credit Cards
I’m only using one here, the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Mastercard. This gives me benefits on American Airlines that I value, but I won’t be using it for spend.
Part 3: Hotel Credit Cards
I’ve got 10 hotel credit cards across 6 hotel programs (Marriott Bonvoy, Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, World of Hyatt, and Wyndham Rewards), primarily to maintain elite status, earn free night awards, and to earn more points when I pay cash for hotel stays.
Part 4: New Credit Cards
For 2024? NONE! Since I’m buying a new house, I’m making sure I avoid credit inquiries / hard pulls and newly opened accounts. That will help me increase my credit score and maintain it at a higher level so I can qualify for the best mortgage rates.

00:20 - Reason #1
2:22 - Reason #2
3:36 - Reason #3
5:05 - Reason #4
8:07 - Reason #5
9:29 - Should I Cancel?
10:33 - Will I Still Use Amex?
REASON 1: Credit Overwhelm. If you’re familiar with the American Express Platinum Card, you know what I’m talking about! From the Uber Cash benefit, $200 hotel credit, $200 airline fee credit, $300 Equinox credit, up to $100 for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, and more, there’s A LOT to keep track of. Making matters even more difficult, many of these credits expire at different times and they do not roll over. The Amex Gold Card has its own $120 Uber Cash benefit and $120 Dining Credit. For now, the Amex Blue Business Plus is free from all this. For a 'simple' Amex Trifecta, you definitely need to put in some work.
REASON 2: Sky-High Annual Fees. The Amex Platinum Card has a $695 annual fee, the Amex Gold Card has an annual fee of $250, and (fortunately) the Amex Blue Business Plus is still at $0. In order to run the Amex Trifecta, you’ll be paying $945 in annual fees each year (with a bunch of credits and benefits in order to justify it).
REASON 3: I’m Not Using the #1 Redemption Method (Right Now). This refers to using Amex transfer partners for travel, particularly for flights. There’s no better way to get the most value out of your Amex points than using these partners to fly internationally on a long-haul flight in a premium cabin (like premium economy, business class, or first class). While the big value isn’t guaranteed (it depends on the itinerary), the potential is there. For at least the next year, I’m not doing these types of flights. Rather, I’m focused on cash back via the Schwab Platinum Card, which gives me 1.1¢ per point.
REASON 4: Higher Percent Return With Other Cards. For my situation, I can obtain 5% cash back on everyday rewards categories like Groceries, Gas, Dining, and Online Shopping. This is a higher cash back return that I’d get using the Amex Trifecta. For Q1 2024, cards like the following can make this happen:
- Chase Freedom Flex
- Citi Custom Cash
- Discover it Cash Back
- Amazon Prime Visa
- Runner Up: Amex Blue Cash Everyday, which earns 3% back on U.S. Online Retail
REASON 5: I Earn Amex Points via Rakuten. Rakuten is an online shopping portal that allows you to earn additional cash back on top of your credit card rewards. The cool thing is that you can change your rewards preference to Amex Membership Rewards points instead! While I’d earn even more Amex points with the Amex Trifecta, I find the earnings via Rakuten to be sufficient for now.
WILL I STILL USE AMEX CARDS? Yes, however, the Amex Trifecta will no longer be my default strategy for the near future. Rather, I plan to use select, individual American Express cards as part of a broader credit card strategy.

The beginning of each new year is an excellent time to review your current credit card strategy and to plan your next one for the next 12 months. However, things don’t always go according to plan!
Of the 8 credit cards I planned to get in 2023, I only ended up getting 1.5 of them (watch the video to see how that math works) :D
Thanks to a massive promotion by American Express, I was able to earn a lot of Amex Membership Rewards points, which was not planned originally.
I also got other credit cards from Wells Fargo, American Express, Bank of America, and Discover.
That said, I’m already planning to make some big changes to my credit card strategy for 2024 (future video coming soon)!

Listen up! I'm going to share with you the ultimate credit card strategy for 2024 and how to customize it to your goals. By following this 5-Step Strategy, you'll be able to build a portfolio of credit cards that will help you make that dream vacation a reality.
00:00 - Intro
00:29 - Step #1
1:51 - Step #2
3:09 - Step #3
4:00 - Flight Example
12:30 - Step #4
15:35 - Step #5
STEP 1: Take Inventory of What You Have
Go over all of the credit cards you have. Add up the annual fees, examine the rewards structures, and think about all the benefits. Do the overall benefit packages make sense for you for another year? If not, it’s time to make some changes (e.g. cancel a credit card, downgrade / product change to a different credit card, or apply for a new credit card).
STEP 2: Identify What You’re Lacking
Identify any rewards categories that you don’t have covered with your existing credit cards. Do the same for any benefits you wish you had but don’t currently.
STEP 3: Identify Your Goal(s)
Do you want to earn cash back or travel rewards? If travel, then where do you want to go? How do you want to get there? When do you want to take the trip? Once you’ve figured out the details, it’s time to start earning points and miles with the right credit cards you need to make the trip happen. Some of the best rewards currencies are:
- Chase Ultimate Rewards points
- Amex Membership Rewards points
- Citi ThankYou points
- Capital One Venture miles
- Bilt Rewards points
- Wells Fargo points (if they launch a transferrable point program in 2024)
Some of the best travel credit cards that earn transferrable and flexible rewards points include:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve
- Chase Sapphire Preferred
- Chase Freedom Unlimited*
- Chase Freedom Flex*
- Amex Platinum Card
- Amex Gold Card
- Citi Premier Card
- Citi Custom Cash Card*
- Citi Double Cash Card*
- Capital One Venture X
- Capital One Venture Rewards
- Capital One VentureOne
- Capital One SavorOne*
- Bilt Mastercard
*Note: For all of the credit cards with an asterisk (*) above, you’ll need to combine them with select premium credit cards (i.e. ones with an annual fee earning the same type of rewards) in order to use all the transfer partners. For the Capital One SavorOne, although it earns cash back, you can convert that cash back into Venture miles if you also have a Venture-branded credit card.
STEP 4: Find the Biggest Value Opportunities Right Now
Find the credit cards with the biggest sign-up bonuses available at the moment. This is typically the best way to earn points and miles FAST for that future trip.
STEP 5: Learn the Bank Application Rules and Apply!

00:35 - Part 1 (Transferrable & Flexible Points)
8:12 - Part 2 (Airline & Hotel Credit Cards)
11:14 - Part 3 (Premium Travel Credit Cards)
12:32 - Part 4 (Travel Portals)
Part 1 (Transferrable & Flexible Points)
These are by far the best type of credit card rewards points. Transferrable means you can transfer them from bank points (like Amex Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards) into partner airline miles or hotel points (like American Airlines AAdvantage miles or Marriott Bonvoy points). Flexible means you can redeem them via the bank portal for any flight, hotel, or rental car you like (kind of like using Expedia). These types of rewards points give you the most flexibility to create the trip or vacation you like.
Part 2 (Airline & Hotel Credit Cards)
These types of travel credit cards have a unique purpose. Primarily, they’re best for BENEFITS…not for earning rewards. Airline credit cards may give you benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, inflight discounts, and more. Hotel credit cards may give you elite status, an annual free night, and ways to earn even higher levels of status for benefits like room upgrades, late checkout, etc. In other words, these cards can enhance your travels. But, when it comes to earning rewards for your day-to-day transactions, you’re likely better off with the flexible and transferrable options. That said, exceptions as to why you may want to spend on these types of cards include: hitting higher status tiers and/or to earn points in the top-tier rewards multiplier (e.g. using a Hilton Honors credit card for spending at Hilton … or a Delta SkyMiles credit card for spending on Delta flights).
Part 3 (Premium Travel Credit Cards)
These include the Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Capital One Venture X, and others. They offer elevated rewards and benefits that are broad, that is, they aren’t specific to any brand or company. The Amex Platinum Card gets you into the greatest number of airport lounges (including the Amex Centurion Lounge, Delta SkyClub, and Priority Pass lounges). The Chase Sapphire Reserve likely has the best overall rewards program. The Capital One Venture X is probably the best entry-level, premium credit card available right now.
Part 4 (Travel Portals)
These have a lot of limitations, particularly when booking hotels and rental cars and when attempting to contact customer service. You might not have your current elite status recognized, you may not earn credits towards higher levels of status, and you may not earn points or rewards in the program.

There are 2 different types of store credit cards:
1. Standard ‘Store Credit Cards’ are closed loop, meaning they can only be used at 1 particular store, brand, or family of stores. They do no operate on the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover networks.
2. ‘Co-Branded Store Credit Cards’ are open loop. These DO run on the Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover networks (look at which logo appears on the front or back), meaning they can be used anywhere those types of cards are accepted.
Some great examples of these 2 types are the Amazon credit cards. There are currently 4 personal versions: 2 Amazon Store Credit Cards that are closed loop and issued by Synchrony Bank and 2 regular Amazon Credit Cards that are open loop running on the Visa network and issued by Chase. Note: there’s also an Amazon Business Credit Card issued by Amex.
Compared to other credit cards, Store Credit Cards tend to have more limited rewards, offer signup bonuses that offer an immediate reward (e.g. 20% discount upon checkout), have higher APR rates, lower credit limits, and may have lower acceptance rates if they’re closed loop.
Store Credit Card PROS
- Easier to qualify & get approved
- Usually get an immediate discount upon opening
- May get strong ongoing rewards (3% - 5%) at a specific store
- Occasional bonus perks, like extra rewards, access to discounts, invite-only events, etc.
Store Credit Card CONS
- May have limited use (e.g. 1 store)
- Typically high interest rates
- Usually limited rewards
- May give lower credit limits
- May have limited / short-term value
Other ‘regular’ credit cards that offer excellent rewards for shopping include:
- U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards Visa Signature

Capital One 48 Month Rule
You’re not eligible for the card offer if you received a new cardmember bonus for the same card in the past 48 months.
Capital One 2-3 / 30 Rule
You’re not eligible for the card offer if you applied for a Capital One credit card 2 or more / 3 or more times in the last 30 days (may vary by card).
Capital One 5 Card Rule
You’re not eligible for the card offer if you have 5 or more open credit card accounts with Capital One. Currently applies to Capital One business credit cards as of this video's recording.
Capital One 2 Card Rule | Capital One 2 Card Limit | May not apply to everyone, if at all
It’s been said for years that you can only have 2 personal Capital One credit cards. It was also said that the following were excluded:
- Cobranded Cards (e.g. Walmart Rewards Card)
- Business Cards (e.g. Spark 1.5% Cash Select)
However, I (and others) have disproved this. See this video:
https://youtu.be/_SyJGPKKiE8?si=CTj15ZUdh24ugkdg
Capital One 1/6 Rule | Capital One 6 Month Rule | May not apply to everyone, if at all
It’s been said that you can get approved for 1 Capital One credit card every 6 months. This includes personal cards and small-business cards.
Capital One Bucketing
Capital One offers different versions of the same card for different credit score ranges.
If you get approved for a ‘lower tier’ version (e.g. fair credit, good credit), then you may not be able to:
- Get a credit-limit increase
- Get upgraded to a ‘higher tier’ version
- Likely applies to individual cards (not overall account)
- Only potential way out? Apply for a new Capital One credit card
Capital One 3 Hard Pulls | Capital One 3 Hard Inquiries
Capital One pulls from all 3 major credit bureaus (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) for each new credit card application. This means 3 new inquiries, but only 1 per report. It may be possible to freeze 1 report (either Experian or Equifax) and still get approved.
Capital One Recent Inquiry / Account Sensitivity
Capital One is known to be sensitive to recent inquiries & newly opened accounts. While not a hard rule, I’d personally want the following prior to applying…
- 0 new inquiries in the past 6 months
- 0 newly opened accounts in the past 6 months
