CARD 1: The Capital One Venture X is an excellent entry-level travel credit card for those still desiring premium benefits and rewards, including airport lounge access (Capital One Lounge, Priority Pass lounges, and Plaza Premium lounges), a $300 travel credit, a 10,000 mile anniversary bonus, and much more!
CARD 2: The Amex Platinum Card is the best credit card for airport lounge access and top-tier / VIP travel benefits.
CARD 3: The Citi Custom Cash is an excellent cash back credit card that is extremely flexible, earning 5% cash back in your top spend category each billing cycle. Cash back is earned as Citi ThankYou points, which can be great for travel, too!
CARD 4: The Capital One SavorOne rocks for cash back, no annual fee, spending on food at restaurants and supermarkets, as well as on entertainment.
CARD 5: The Amex Gold Card is a top choice for people who spend a lot of their monthly budget at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, but who want to earn travel rewards (Amex Membership Rewards points).
CARD 6: The Citi Double Cash is a perfect catch-all credit card for non-category spend as it earns a flat 2% cash back on all purchases with no limits on how much you can earn. It earns cash back in the form of Citi ThankYou points that can be combined with the rewards from the Citi Premier Card for access to transfer partners.
CARD 7: The Bilt Mastercard is the best credit card to pay rent (without additional fees)! It’s also a great travel credit card with no annual fee.
CARD 8: The Discover it Cash Back is a solid everyday credit card that earns 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories that are very useful (examples may include gas, groceries, dining, Amazon, mobile wallets, etc.)
CARD 9: The Chase Freedom Flex is similar to the Discover it Cash Back credit card in that it also earns 5% cash back in rotating quarterly categories. But, this card earns its cash back in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points and also adds several other permanent rewards categories.
CARD 10: The Chase Sapphire Preferred is arguably the best travel credit card for beginners. Its superpowers include the ability to make all points worth 25% more when redeemed for travel via the Chase travel portal AND providing access to transfer partners. Since it earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points (like the Chase Freedom Flex), you can combine the points, too!

🎬 VIDEO - How to Use PRIORITY PASS (Beginner’s Guide)
https://youtu.be/mP1zEyWdf8o
Normally, airport lounge access is supposed to be a nice way to escape the chaos of the terminal. However, the Swissport Lounge Chicago ORD had the exact opposite effect (I’d rather STAY in the terminal and spend money to get a real meal)!
This Swissport Lounge Chicago ORD is a Priority Pass lounge, though it’s in need of a huge makeover. Here’s everything you need to know about it…
Amenities
- Per the Priority Pass website, the Swissport Lounge at O’Hare includes: disabled access, no smoking, air conditioning, TV, refreshments, newspapers/magazines, wi-fi, and digital card accepted for entry. How’s that for a list of ‘benefits?!’ :D
- The wifi did not work during my visit, and the free wifi at Chicago O’Hare airport was incredibly slow, so I used my iPhone hotspot.
- The Swissport Lounge has NO windows…anywhere. Want to charge your devices? You’ll need to stay at the tables along the border of the lounge to (hopefully) get access to the very few outlets available. The food and beverage options were nearly all snack focused (i.e. no hot food, minimal vegetarian options, and a heavy focus on carbs / sugar) :D
- All of the furnishings are SEVERELY worn and tired. Gotta love the stained carpet and out of order restroom, too!
Hours
- The Swissport Lounge ORD opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 9:00 PM daily.
- It’s closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 01.
- Capacity Constraints: Access may be periodically restricted due to space constraints, especially during the hours of 3:00 PM – 8:30 PM daily. This location may exceed its seating limit at certain times of the day & access is at the staff’s sole discretion. If you look at reviews online, it seems very common that Priority Pass members are turned away in the late afternoon / evening hours.
Location
- The Swissport Lounge is at Chicago O’Hare International Airport in Terminal 5.
- You’ll find it between a restaurant and a retail store. At the time of my visit, the restaurant was “Big Bowl” and the retail store was “I Love Chicago.”
Priority Pass Lounge Access
- Time: Up to 3 hours prior to departure.
- Show: Priority Pass card and boarding pass at the front desk.
- Guests: Varies by membership level.
- Children: Under 4 years old are free.
- Dress Code: Shoes required.
Big Surprise
- This Swissport Lounge Chicago ORD is actually a contract lounge used by international airlines for their premium passengers! Airlines include Air India, Alitalia (now ITA Airways), Royal Jordanian, Etihad Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Finnair, and then those who enter via Priority Pass.

WHAT’S IN MY WALLET Q3 2023 | Credit Card Strategy 2023
Take a look inside my wallet to see which credit cards I’m using for Q3 2023! This time I’ve got 7 credit cards: 4 are travel credit cards and 3 are cash back credit cards, all across 6 different banks! Click “Show More” to see Ad Disclosure, links, and additional information below.

Here's my best credit card strategy for Q3 2023!
1. Capital One Venture X: I’m using this card for my non-category spend (2X miles) and for airport lounge access to the Capital One Lounge DFW.
2. Bilt Mastercard: My top choice to pay rent, earn rewards, and avoid fees! An excellent travel credit card with no annual fee.
3. Hilton Honors Business Card: I’ve got a stay at a Hilton hotel soon, so I’ll use this card to earn 12X points. I’m also using it for healthcare expenses (3X) to work toward the Hilton Free Night Award. I’ll need to spend a total of $15K for the entire year to receive that award, which can be well worth it since it has no limit on total redemption value.
4. U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve: My choice for Costco purchases since it earns 3X points on mobile wallet transactions (and it’s a Visa credit card, which is required at Costco).
5. Amazon Prime Visa: To earn 5% cash back at Amazon. I simply leave this card as my default payment method so it’s always available when I check out.
6. U.S. Bank Cash Plus: This one allows me to earn 5% cash back on TV, Internet, and Streaming as well as on Home Utilities. A very unique credit card that covers categories not seen on many other cards!
7. Discover it Cash Back credit card: This is the best quarter of 2023 in my opinion since it’s earning 5% cash back on Digital Wallet transactions - as well as 5% at gas stations - on up to $1,500 in combined spend. Since ‘digital wallets’ is so broad, this is my go-to card for groceries, Target, restaurants, online shopping, and more.

🎬 VIDEO - How to get APPROVED for American Express Credit Cards (Amex Application Rules)
https://youtu.be/X4afVAbhc4g
American Express issues some of the best credit cards available, especially for people who want to earn travel rewards. Whenever you see a credit card earning Amex Membership Rewards points, you KNOW that the rewards will be ideal for flights on that next vacation.
However, before you go apply for that Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, Amex Green Card, or any other Amex card, be sure you understand the terms of the welcome offer (i.e. signup bonus). If you “think” you made enough “purchases,” but if not all of those purchases are eligible, then it could mean missing out on that offer altogether.
For my situation, it came down to “Can you pay taxes with a credit card?”
Historically, yes, paying taxes with credit cards is fine, be it with Amex credit cards, Chase credit cards, Capital One credit cards, and so forth.
BUT…I ran into a MAJOR PROBLEM.
When using my Amex Business Gold Card to pay taxes, ONE of my transactions was eligible but the OTHER ONE was NOT!
And worst of all, I was planning on the spend from my quarterly tax payment to go towards earning the Amex signup bonus of 90K Membership Rewards points (the spend requirement was to spend $10K in the first 3 months).
As a side note, my Amex Business Gold Card offer was targeted via email, and it was also one of those Amex No Lifetime Language offers.
Learn what happened, what I did to (temporarily) work around the issue this time around, and how it dramatically affected my view of applying for more Amex credit cards in the future!

🎬 VIDEO - Chase 5/24 Rule Explained
https://youtu.be/muJEN8C86JY
The Chase Ink Business Preferred has a new welcome offer! You can now earn 100K Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $8K in the first 3 months (previously it was $15K).
The value of these points is $1,000 for cash back or $1,250+ towards travel via the Chase Travel portal.
Fortunately, you don’t need a standard “business” to qualify. That is, there’s no requirement to have an LLC, partnership, or corporation. You can apply as an individual (i.e. as a sole proprietorship) and use your SSN instead of an EIN. As long as you have a side hustle / make money outside of a 9-5 job, then you may be eligible to apply for a business credit card (including the Chase Ink Business Preferred)!
The Chase Ink Preferred also earns points in the following categories:
- 5X Lyft (thru March 2025)
- 3X Travel*
- 3X Advertising* (Social media sites, Search engines)
- 3X Internet, Cable, Phone*
- 3X Shipping*
- 1X Other Purchases
*Up to $150K in combined purchases per cardmember year in 3X categories, then 1X.
The annual fee is $95.
Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1.7¢ each (on average) when redeemed via Chase Transfer Partners, 1.25¢ each via the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal or via the Chase Pay Yourself Back feature, and 1.0¢ each as cash back (i.e. statement credit or deposit to a checking account or savings account).

MAIN BENEFITS
You can add employee cards at no additional cost, get access to some business expense reporting tools, and the card has no foreign transaction fees.
IS THE CHASE INK PREFERRED WORTH IT?
- Likely YES if you want a super strong signup bonus, spend in the 3X rewards categories, and value points that are good for cash back and great for travel. It can also make sense if you want excellent insurance protections and have other Chase credit cards that earn Ultimate Rewards points. Examples include the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve, plus the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited, all of which are on the personal side. There’s also the Chase Ink Unlimited and Chase Ink Cash. All of these Chase credit cards earn the same type of points (Ultimate Rewards points) and can be pooled together!
- Likely NO if you don’t value the 3X categories, don’t like credit cards with annual fees, or are over the Chase 5/24 Rule.

My Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite credit card arrived! It was shipped by UPS and expedited by default, being delivered in about 2-3 business days. I was surprised at how large the box was and the overall elevated packaging of the card.
It’s a metal credit card weighing ~ 17 grams, roughly the same as the Capital One Venture X card, slightly less than the Amex Platinum Card at 18 grams, and a lot heavier than the Chase Sapphire Reserve at 12 - 13 grams. Of all of these premium travel credit cards, the BOA Elite card is currently the least rewarding on its own (although it has the best marketing appearance) :D
The Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card earns 2X points on Travel and Dining, plus 1.5X points on all other purchases. It’s not a good rewards structure on its own, though it does get a lot more competitive if you’re also in the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program (granting an additional 25%, 50%, or 75% boost on those earning rates depending on the level you’re at). That said, without the BOA Preferred Rewards program in place, cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Capital One Venture X, or Amex Platinum Card will be better options to have if you frequently spend money on airfare or want access to transfer partners for higher value redemptions.
🔗 Learn more about the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program here:
https://promotions.bankofamerica.com/preferredrewards/en
As for the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite benefits, it comes with up to $550 in statement credits (all automatically issued). It offers up to $300 toward airline incidental charges (like seat upgrades, baggage fees, airline lounge fees, and in-flight services), a $150 Lifestyle Credit (for things like video streaming services, food delivery, fitness subscriptions, and rideshare services), and a $100 TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit every 4 years.
Additionally, when you redeem Bank of America points for airfare, you’ll get a 20% discount when you pay with points via the Bank of America travel portal.
The card also includes a Priority Pass Select membership for access to airport lounges (and partner restaurant and retail locations), among other benefits.

If you’re considering applying for a travel credit card, then there are a number of things you’ll have to deal with to ensure the card makes sense.
1 | Annual Fees
Many travel credit cards have annual fees of $95 and up. For instance, the Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $95 annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Reserve has a $550 annual fee, the Amex Platinum Card has a $695 annual fee, the Amex Gold Card has a $250 annual fee, the Citi Premier Card has a $95 annual fee, and the Capital One Venture X has a $395 annual fee. However, a lot of these premium travel credit cards come with benefits that can outweigh the cost (e.g. airport lounge access via a Priority Pass membership).
2 | Devaluations
Credit card points and miles tend to lose value over time. This is why the phrase “earn and burn” is so common in the industry. A hotel costing 60,000 points now might cost 80,000 points in the future. Once you have enough rewards to take a trip, it’s probably a good time to book it. To help hedge against this, it’s often best to focus on flexible and transferrable points as those tend to get devalued less often and less dramatically. Examples include Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Amex Membership Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, Capital One Venture miles, and Bilt Rewards points.
3 | Expiration Dates
Here we’re referring to points and miles, credits, certificates, and other benefits. All of these typically have a lifespan (e.g. monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.) before they expire or renew, and many do not roll over.
4 | Managing Benefits
The credit card benefits you receive have terms, restrictions, availability constraints, and some work required in order to maximize them. Be sure you’re able to juggle them in order to more easily justify any annual fees.
5 | Learning Curve
Unlike cash back credit cards, travel credit cards are much more complex. Their rewards often require you to plan in advance because award availability for certain flights or hotels may not be open year-round. The value of points or miles from one program may also have entirely different values compared to another program, so you’ll want to learn the average values for Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Amex Membership Rewards points, etc., including the rewards values for airline and hotel programs. Additionally, you’ll want to understand transfer partners and airline alliances to take better advantage of your rewards (e.g. redeeming points for maximum value).
6 | Bigger Spend Requirements
In order to earn the credit card signup bonuses, you’ll find that the spend requirements are oftentimes higher on travel credit cards. Make sure your monthly budget allows for the required spend prior to applying (otherwise, you’ll likely want to avoid getting the card).

First…the BIG question. Does Spirit Airlines have first class? Technically, no, BUT they do have first class seats! These are called the Spirit Big Front Seats and they give you more width and pitch (fancy talk for more leg room).
In other words, the Spirit Big Front Seat is basically a first class seat WITHOUT first class service.
That’s because with Spirit Airlines, you DO NOT get the following amenities with the Big Front Seat:
- Priority check-in
- Priority security
- Priority boarding
- Separate cabin
- Complimentary food
- Complimentary drinks
- Free checked bag
- Elevated rewards
All of these types of benefits normally come with a first class ticket.
🔗 Interestingly, the View from the Wing blog explains ‘The Super Weird Reason Spirit Airlines Offers A First Class Seating Option’ in their blog post here:
https://viewfromthewing.com/the-super-weird-reason-spirit-airlines-offers-a-first-class-seating-option/
So, how to fly Spirit First Class?
Well, you can either PAY or BID for your Spirit Big Front Seat (and pricing varies)!
- You can pay during the booking process as part of the seat selection
- You can pay after the booking process as a seat change
- You can bid when given the option via email
How much is the Spirit Big Front Seat? It varies quite a bit. I did 4 searches and got different pricing each time. The SAN to LAS flight was $56, the MIA to ATL flight was $86, the PHX to LAS flight was $152, and the BAQ to FLL flight was $78.
What are the Spirit Big Front Seat benefits?
- You can get access to food and drink for an additional fee (although so can everyone else).
🔗See the Spirit Food Menu at this link: https://customersupport.spirit.com/en-us/category/article/KA-01225
- There’s a large tray table located in the armrest
- The center armrest is very big
- The seat is well padded and much more comfortable than the standard seat
- You get a real seatback pocket!
- It’s really easy to access the restroom
What about the cons?
- There’s no first class service
- You cannot further recline your seat
- There are no power outlets
- There’s no inflight entertainment
- There are no free upgrades (and currently, you cannot redeem Spirit points to upgrade either)
Is Spirit Airlines First Class Worth It? // Is Spirit Airlines Big Front Seat Worth It?
Probably YES if…
- You’re on a longer flight
- You have physical needs
- You have a personal preference
Probably NOT if…
- You’re on a short flight
- You don’t have a need or desire for it
- Your goal is to save money on flights or travel overall

There are a number of premium travel credit cards on the market right now, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum Card, and Capital One Venture X. More recently, Bank of America decided to get into the game and launched their Premium Rewards Elite card. Since the moment it was released until June 2023, it had a 50,000 point welcome offer, which didn’t cover the cost of the $550 annual fee.
But NOW it has an elevated offer of 75,000 points (finally!) worth $750 towards travel or cash back. That more than covers the annual fee, and then the other benefits add value from there. The spend requirement is $5,000 within the first 90 days to earn that bonus.
The Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite card also earns 2X points on Travel and Dining, plus 1.5X points on all other purchases.

As for the Bank of America Premium Rewards Elite benefits, it comes with up to $550 in statement credits (all automatically issued). Additionally, when you redeem Bank of America points for airfare, you’ll get a 20% discount when you pay with points via the Bank of America travel portal.
The card also includes a Priority Pass Select membership for access to airport lounges (and partner restaurant and retail locations), among other benefits.
My credit score was 766 on Experian, 807 on TransUnion, and 817 on Equifax.
I had 11 inquiries on Experian, 5 inquiries on TransUnion, and 2 inquiries on Equifax.
In terms of how many newly opened accounts that appeared on my Experian credit report, I had 2 in the past 6 months, 6 in the past 12 months, and 8 in the past 24 months. Bank of America pulled Experian for my personal credit card application in my region.
My average age of credit history was 4 years 5 months.
My Bank of America relationship consisted of 1 personal checking account, 1 personal savings account, 1 personal credit card, and 2 business credit cards.

Are you new to the world of travel credit cards and looking for one to help you save money on your next vacation? The Chase Sapphire Preferred can be an excellent choice! While it may not be the right credit card for everyone, it surely offers one of the best overall rewards and benefits packages while being easy to use.
While it’s likely NOT going to be a good choice if you’re looking for your first credit card ever, it can be a solid choice as your 2nd (or later) credit card (and perhaps first TRAVEL credit card) after building your credit for about a year with a good credit score.
Here are my Top 7 Reasons why the Chase Sapphire Preferred is a great choice…
Note: Terms apply to all Chase offers, rewards, and benefits. Visit chase.com to learn more.
Reason 1: High-Value Welcome Offer. You can earn 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. These Chase points are worth $600 toward cash back or $750 toward travel (at a minimum). Getting a lot of points quickly up front is an awesome way to save a lot of money on a trip that isn’t too far away.
Reason 2: Good Reward Multipliers. The CSP earns 5X on Travel via the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal, 3X Dining, 3X Online Grocery, 3X Select Streaming, 2X Other Travel, and 1X Other Purchases. Certain restrictions apply (see video for more).
Reason 3: Strong Rewards Value. When you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you’ll be earning Ultimate Rewards points. 1 point = 1.0¢ towards cash back or 1.25¢ towards travel at a minimum. Having these guaranteed, flat-rate values makes for a compelling rewards program without much hassle.
Reason 4: High Rewards Flexibility. You can redeem Chase points in a variety of ways, including using Chase Transfer Partners to gain access to higher potential value. Currently these include:
AIRLINES
- Aer Lingus AerClub
- Air Canada Aeroplan
- British Airways Executive Club
- Air France-KLM Flying Blue
- Emirates Skywards
- Iberia Plus
- JetBlue TrueBlue
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
- Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards
- United MileagePlus
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
HOTELS
- IHG One Rewards
- Marriott Bonvoy
- World of Hyatt
Reason 5: Comprehensive Protections. The Chase Sapphire Preferred gives you both travel protections and retail protections. See video to learn more.
Reason 6: Benefits Cover the Annual Fee. From the $50 Hotel Credit and Partner Benefits with Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, and Gopuff, there are a lot of ways to cover the $95 annual fee very easily.
Reason 7: Part of a Card Ecosystem. You can combine Chase Sapphire Preferred points with other Chase credit cards, including the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited. And on the business side, the Chase Ink Business Unlimited, Chase Ink Business Cash, and Chase Ink Business Preferred all earn Ultimate Rewards points, too. You can pool ALL of them together into 1 point balance and make them ALL worth 1.25¢ (or more) towards travel!

Reason 1 - Wrong Card…Wrong Time: There are beginner credit cards meant for building credit (like student credit cards and secured credit cards), rebuilder credit cards meant to help you rebuild credit after a previous mishap, and rewards credit cards that are designed for people who’ve established a healthy credit track record (examples include airline credit cards, hotel credit cards, and more general travel options like the Amex Gold Card, Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card, and others).
Reason 2 - Short Credit History: Generally, the longer your credit history, the better your credit score.
Reason 3 - Not Knowing Bank Rules: The Chase 5/24 Rule, Amex Lifetime Rule, Citi 48 Month Rule, and Bank of American 2/3/4 Rule are examples of rules you’ll want to be aware of prior to submitting an application.

🎬 VIDEO - How to Get Approved for Amex Credit Cards (Amex Application Rules):
https://youtu.be/X4afVAbhc4g
Reason 4 - High Debt or Utilization: Keeping your reported credit utilization on the lower side is helpful when applying for more credit. Generally, under 30% is good and under 10% is great.
Reason 5 - Derogatory Marks: Keep your credit report free from late payments, foreclosures, charge offs, bankruptcies, etc.
Reason 6 - Too Many Recent Inquiries: Recent inquiries look like you may be a riskier borrower, so limit these prior to applying for a new card.
Reason 7 - Too Many Newly Opened Accounts: New accounts being opened on your credit report also looks like a higher-risk behavior. Consider waiting for some time between credit card applications.
Reason 8 - Credit Score Too Low: Although minimum credit score requirements aren’t published, you’ll want to focus on increasing your score over time.
Reason 9 - Income Too Low: Although minimum income requirements aren’t published, a lender may also look at your debt-to-income ratio (DTI ratio) to make sure you have enough capital to repay debts.
Reason 10 - Too Much Credit Already Given: Consider a credit line reallocation, if allowed.
TIPS: HOW TO GET APPROVED FOR CREDIT CARDS!
1. Pay down your existing debts as much as you can.
2. Report low utilization on existing credit cards.
3. Get your credit score up.
4. Wait for inquiries to fall off and new accounts to age.
5. Learn the credit card application rules for different banks.
6. Increase your income.
7. Put financial responsibility above the credit card game.
8. Apply for the right credit card(s) based on your credit profile.
9. If denied, call the reconsideration line.

You may have seen my video from 1-2 weeks ago about applying for TWO credit cards at the same time (that is, two in the same day). One of those credit cards was the U.S Bank Altitude Connect Visa Signature. I wanted it for the welcome offer to earn 50,000 points after spending $2K in the first 120 days. That signup bonus is worth $500 towards travel or cash back, and the $95 annual fee is waived in Year 1. It's also got a great 'general purpose' rewards category of 4X points for travel (and 4X on gas).
Unfortunately, U.S. Bank denied my application.
The reason…
“Maximum amount of unsecured credit already available.”
In other words, I already have the maximum amount of credit that U.S. Bank is willing to lend me at this time. This was likely due to my overall profile, including credit score, income level, debts owed, and more. There wasn’t a way for me to know this prior to applying. Normally, this wouldn’t be much of an issue if I could use some existing credit from one of my other U.S. Bank cards to open this new one. But, U.S. Bank does not allow this in my experience. When I called the U.S. Bank reconsideration line to ask about this, I was simply told “no.”
So…I got stuck and had to accept the decision for now!
Regarding my relationship with U.S. Bank, it was as follows…
- 1 personal checking account, 1 personal savings account, 1 business checking account, 2 personal credit cards, 1 business credit card.
That said, I also learned the U.S. Bank pulled Experian and used the FICO 9 Score model (my score was 779 as of 5.11.2023).

To create my own Best MIXED Credit Card Trifecta, I had to meet certain criteria:
1. Each of the 3 travel credit card had to be from a different issuer.
2. None of the credit card rewards categories and benefits could have too much overlap.
3. All of the rewards had to give good value for travel.
4. The credit card annual fees had to be easily justified without too much hassle.
5. All of the credit cards had to provide long term value.
Here are the 3 credit cards I chose and a little bit into the ‘why’…
1. Capital One Venture X: This is an excellent premium travel credit card that can give you $750+ in value from the welcome offer in Year 1. It also has strong rewards categories (up to 10X miles!) for select travel purchases and also earns 2X miles at a minimum for all standard purchases. For the $395 annual fee, you’ll receive an annual $300 travel credit, a 10,000 mile anniversary bonus (worth $100+ towards travel via the Capital One Travel portal), airport lounge access (Capital One Lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges, and Priority Pass Lounges), elite status and/or discounts with partner rental car companies, and more!
2. American Express Gold Card: If you eat food and like to travel, this card can make a lot of sense to get. After earning 60,000 Amex Membership Rewards points (or more) in Year 1, you’ll continue earning 4X points on Groceries at U.S. Supermarkets (up to $25K/year) and 4X on Dining Worldwide (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.). Despite the $250 annual fee, it comes with an annual $120 dining credit and a $120 Uber Cash benefit to help offset it.
3. Citi Custom Cash Card: This card is unique in that it earns 5X points in YOUR Top Spend Category each billing cycle from a preset list of 10 categories (max. $500/month). So, you can strategically use this card to capture a high return on spend in a category you choose that’s not covered by the other two cards.
Furthermore, both the Amex Gold card and Capital One Venture X give you access to some excellent transfer partners, a number of which overlap so you can indirectly combine your rewards!
Of course, there are plenty of other credit card trifectas you can create for yourself (including the popular Amex Trifecta and Chase Trifecta). Some of you may want to make your own with the likes of the Amex Platinum Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, or others. As always, choose the cards that fit into your lifestyle and work with your spending habits.

🎬 VIDEO - Beginner's Guide to Transfer Partners for BIG Value
https://youtu.be/ae1WayyrwnE
Europe is a destination so many people want to go to from the United States. Fortunately, learning how to fly to Europe cheap is easy once you learn how to use credit card points! We’ll look at 3 major airline programs along with some sample itineraries, plus the credit cards you may want to get to make it all happen!
00:00 - INTRO
00:13 - AIR CANADA AEROPLAN: This is still a distance-based airline rewards program, meaning the number of points you’ll need to redeem is based on the distance flown. In the video you’ll find 3 examples of how to fly from New York (JFK) to Frankfurt (FRA), Rome (FCO), and London (LHR). Air Canada is part of the Star Alliance, so you can use your Aeroplan points to fly on partner airlines like ANA, Avianca, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, and others.
To earn Air Canada Aeroplan points, you’ll want to start with the following programs and credit cards:
- American Express Membership Rewards Points: Any Amex credit card that earns these points will allow you to use Amex Transfer Partners, including the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, and Amex Green Card
- Chase Ultimate Rewards Points: You’ll want to obtain Chase credit cards that give you access to Chase Transfer Partners. The current options include the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Chase Ink Business Preferred.
- Capital One Venture / Spark Miles: You can get any Capital One credit card that earns Venture miles (e.g. Capital One VentureOne card, Capital One Venture Rewards card, Capital One Venture X card) or a Capital One Spark business card that earns miles.
- Bilt Rewards points: The only option at this time is the Bilt Mastercard / Bilt Credit Card.
All of the programs transfer directly to Air Canada Aeroplan.
08:17 - AIR FRANCE-KLM FLYING BLUE: A great airline rewards program to fly to Europe. There’s no published award chart anymore, but they do have a useful calculator located at this link: https://www.flyingblue.fr/en/earn-spend/flights/rewards
Sample itineraries include Los Angeles (LAX) to Paris (CDG), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Amsterdam (AMS), and Atlanta (ATL) to Barcelona (BCN).
All 5 major travel credit card rewards programs transfer to Flying Blue (Amex, Chase, Capital One, Citi, Bilt). For Citi, just the Citi Premier Card offers access at this time.
Air France and KLM are both part of the SkyTeam Alliance.
13:31 - UNITED MILEAGEPLUS: This is an excellent U.S. airline for flying to Europe. In the video I go over possible routes from New Jersey (EWR) to Athens (ATH), Miami (MIA) to Vienna (VIE), and Chicago (ORD) to Dublin (DUB). United Airlines is another Star Alliance airline (same as Air Canada).
You can get United miles by transferring directly from both the Chase Ultimate Rewards program and the Bilt Rewards program.

For this year, if I could only use 1 credit card, it wouldn’t be the Amex Platinum Card or the Amex Gold Card or the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
I’d choose the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Visa Infinite Card!
Here’s why…
1. The intro offer of 50,000 points after spending $4.5K in the first 90 days is excellent. That’s worth $500 towards cash back or $750 towards travel.
2. The rewards structure includes two categories that earn 3X points, specifically, 3X Travel and 3X Mobile Wallet Purchases. Having a broad ‘travel’ category is very useful as it works for airlines, hotels, rental cars, and more (even if you do not book via the U.S. Bank travel portal)! Even better is earning 3X on mobile wallet transactions. As long as a merchant accepts the likes of Apple Pay or Android Pay, then the specific category doesn’t matter…you’ll earn 3X points regardless! Ever wondered what one of the best credit cards for Costco or Target is? This one!
3. Points are worth 1.5¢ each towards travel (and 1.0¢ each towards cash back). That’s a guaranteed flat rate redemption without needed to strategize. The U.S. Bank Real Time Rewards method is AMAZING. Once you enroll, you’ll get automatic text messages after making a travel purchase asking you if you want to redeem points. If you reply with ‘Redeem,’ then that’s it…you’re done and a statement credit will be on its way!
4. Airport lounge access via Priority Pass. The U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve gives you 4 free visits to Priority Pass lounges each year, plus 4 guest passes.
5. Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection. This separate portal gives you benefits that function like a light level of hotel elite status at hundreds of properties worldwide. By this I mean things like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast for 2, late check-out, and more!
6. Up to $100 credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.
7. No Foreign Transaction Fees, plus it’s a Visa credit card, so it will be accepted across the globe.

🔗 Insurance and Protections - U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve:
https://www.myvisacardportal.com/usbank/en_us/altitude/altitudereserve/protections.html
On the whole, the U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve credit card is a fantastic all around travel credit card. You get the basics of a premium credit card without a bunch of perks that require ‘work’ or management to use them. Plus, although there aren’t any transfer partners, the ability to get a guaranteed 1.5¢ per point value is compelling. Simplicity is key with this card, and it delivers very well.

For Q1 2023, I’m focusing my credit card rewards across 7 credit cards with an additional focus on travel points for future trips:
1. Citi Custom Cash Card: With it’s flexible 5% rewards category that can change every month, I’m using this card to earn 5% back on restaurants for April.
2. Hilton Honors Business Card: For my upcoming trip to Florida, I’ll be staying at a Hilton hotel (Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina) and paying cash. Since this Hilton credit card earns 12X points at Hilton (approximately a 6% return), it’ll be an excellent choice to earn points fast! (Plus, it also gives me Hilton Honors Gold Status for a daily $15 food credit per person, up to 2 people).
3. Citi Premier Card: I’m using this card to pay for gas (it earns 3X here). Since Citi might release a new card or two (i.e. the Citi Strata Premier and the Citi Strata Elite), I’m focusing on using my existing Citi credit cards in the hopes it may help with a future approval for either of those possible new card releases. Note: Citi may like to see use of existing cards when making credit card application decisions.
4. Bilt Mastercard: I’m using the Bilt Credit Card for my dining purchases from May - June. This will allow me to satisfy the 5 transaction requirement each month to earn Bilt points.
🎬 VIDEO: Bilt Mastercard Review | Bilt Credit Card Review
https://youtu.be/y6z9ucu8Cms
5. Chase Freedom Flex: The Chase Freedom Flex calendar currently awards 5% cash back (in the form of 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points) on purchases at Lowe’s and Amazon. This is my card of choice for Amazon purchases, as well as Lyft (it also earns 5% / 5X there due to a partnership between Chase and Lyft through March 31, 2025).
6. Amex Gold Card: Due to a referral bonus, I’m using this card to earn 9X Amex Membership Rewards points for 3 months on all supermarket spend (i.e. 4X standard + 5X referral bonus).
