🔗PRESS RELEASE - American Express® Enhances Blue Cash Everyday® Card with New Design, Cash Back Rewards, and Benefits: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220714005286/en/American-Express%C2%AE-Enhances-Blue-Cash-Everyday%C2%AE-Card-with-New-Design-Cash-Back-Rewards-and-Benefits
🎬VIDEO - How to get APPROVED for American Express Credit Cards! (Amex Application Rules): https://youtu.be/X4afVAbhc4g
On July 14, 2022, American Express relaunched the Blue Cash Everyday credit card with a new design and updated benefits, all without increasing the annual fee!
Since then, the new rewards structure is as follows:
- 3% Groceries at U.S. Supermarkets, up to $6K spend per year, then 1%
- 3% U.S. Online Retail Purchases, up to $6K spend per year, then 1%
- 3% U.S. Gas Stations, up to $6K spend per year, then 1%
- 1% Other Purchases
It also offers the following benefits:
- The Disney Bundle: Get $7/mo. back, up to $84 per year, after spending $13.99+ per month on eligible subscriptions to The Disney Bundle. Enrollment required.
- Home Chef Credit: Get up to $15/mo. back in statement credits, up to $180 per year, when you enroll & activate this benefit and charge Home Chef meal subscriptions to your card.
Upon seeing that online retail category, I’ve had the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card on my ‘hot list’ of cards to apply for in the future. Very few credit cards offer elevated rewards for online shopping (another notable one is the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Card), so this is a major standout feature.
Furthermore, there aren’t many Amex credit cards with a $0 annual fee, and this is one of them. In fact, I’d argue it’s one of the best cash back credit cards available right now.
And best of all, since it earns cash back, it works well as part of a multi-card strategy. For instance, you could use it alongside the Citi Double Cash card, Citi Custom Cash card, Chase Freedom Flex card, and many others to help you cover a variety of different spend categories.
The fact that it’s also a credit card with no annual fee makes it a great long-term keeper card, too. That way you can keep it open for years to come, build positive credit history and increase your credit score, without having to pay anything for it.
Well…the day has arrived…it’s time to apply!

I opened my Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant account back in Aug. 2018 (at that time it was the SPG Luxury Credit Card). More recently on Sep. 22, 2022, Marriott and American Express relaunched the card with a higher annual fee (originally $450, now $650) and a handful of improved benefits.
Here are the 4 Main Reasons why I’m keeping the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card (at least for the foreseeable future):
1. $300 Dining Credit: This is issued as statement credits, up to $25/mo., and works at restaurants worldwide. I see this as a simple way to lower the effective annual fee to $350 as I already spend more than $25 per month at restaurants.
2. 85K Marriott Free Night Award: Each year you keep the card open and pay the annual fee, you’ll receive a Free Night certificate worth up to 85K points. This puts more Marriott luxury brands within reach, like Ritz-Carlton hotels, W hotels, JW Marriott hotels, St. Regis hotels, and more. Just be aware that this certificate only works for 1 night, so if you're staying at an expensive property for 2 nights or longer, then you'll need to have a lot of additional points or cash to pay for the remainder.
3. Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status: As I see it, this is the sweet spot of the Marriott Bonvoy program. It offers a lot of really valuable benefits, including 50% more base points per stay, room upgrades including suites, a welcome amenity of points / breakfast benefit / other option, free premium Wi-Fi, lounge access, and more.
4. 25 Elite Night Credits Per Year: These act as if you had stayed an additional 25 nights each year. This is valuable for helping you achieve higher levels of elite status (e.g. Marriott Bonvoy Titanium) and also helps you work towards Marriott Lifetime Elite Status. I’m currently eyeing Marriott Lifetime Platinum, which requires being a Platinum Elite for 10 years and staying a total of 600 nights.
On the whole, I see this hotel credit card as a fantastic way to get more value out of Marriott hotel stays, though make sure it fits in with your travel habits prior to adding it to your wallet.

For Q4 2022, I’m focusing my credit card rewards across 7 cards:
1. Amex Gold Card: I’m using this Amex charge card for dining and grocery store spend as it earns 4X Amex Membership Rewards points in each of those categories. To offset the $250 annual fee, it also comes with a $120 dining credit at select merchants and a $120 Uber Cash benefit. Both of these are issued as $10/mo. and I make sure to use them. This makes the effective annual fee only $10.
2. Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card: I’m using this Amex credit card for the $25/mo. dining credit (up to $300/yr.), which is a new benefit that replaced the old $300 Marriott Bonvoy credit. This card provides me with massive value as it allows me to maintain Marriot Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status, offers 25 Elite Night Credits, issues a Marriott Free Night certificate worth up to 85,000 points, and more!
3. World of Hyatt Credit Card: I’m using this Chase credit card for the targeted, limited-time spend bonus allowing me to earn 10X points at gas stations. The same offer also awards 5X points at Amazon.com and grocery stores, all up to $1,500 in combined spend. However, I’m using other credit cards for those two categories.
4. Discover it Cash Back Credit Card: I’m using this cash back credit card to earn 5% cash back at Amazon.com and 5% cash back on mobile wallet transactions (i.e. Apple Pay). These are part of the Discover it cash back calendar for Q4 2022.
5. Chase Freedom Flex Card: I’m using this cash back credit card to earn 5% via PayPal. The Chase Freedom calendar also includes Walmart for Q4 2022, though I’m not shopping there at this time. Note: The Chase Freedom Flex issues cash back in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
6. Citi Custom Cash Card: I’m using this cash back credit card for its flexible 5% cash back category (i.e. 5% in your Top Spend Category from an eligible list). For me, I’m using this card exclusively for drug store purchases. Note: The Citi Custom Cash card issues cash back in the form of Citi ThankYou points. // Citi Custom Cash Categories:
- Restaurants
- Gas Stations
- Grocery Stores
- Select Travel
- Select Transit
- Select Streaming Services
- Drugstores
- Home Improvement Stores
- Fitness Clubs
- Live Entertainment
7. Amex Blue Business Plus Card: I’m using this Amex business credit card at my catch-all credit card (i.e. for all my non-bonus / non-category spend that would normally earn 1X - 1.5X on other credit cards) because it earns 2X on all purchases, up to $50K spend per year.
The majority of my focus is on cash back credit cards right now, but I’m also adding some travel rewards with Hyatt because the targeted limited-time offer to earn 10X points at gas stations is so good! I also redeem my Amex Membership Rewards points for cash back via the Schwab Platinum Card, which allows me to cash out at a rate of 1.10¢ per point into my Charles Schwab brokerage account. I can then send the funds out to a linked checking account.

A lot of people want to apply for Amex credit cards and are often surprised when they get denied. To learn how to get approved for Amex cards, first study the Amex application rules. Following these rules does not guarantee an approval, rather, it may give you a higher chance of an approval.
Amex Application Rule 1: Amex 1/5 Rule
- You may get approved for 1 Amex credit card every 5 days. This does not apply to Amex charge cards, which include the: Amex Centurion Card, Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, Amex Green Card, and the Amex Plum Card.
Amex Application Rule 2: Amex 2/90 Rule
- You may get approved for 2 Amex credit cards every 90 days. This does not apply to Amex charge cards.
Amex Application Rule 3: Amex 4-5 Credit Card Rule
- This answers the question of “How many Amex cards can you have?”
- You may get approved for a maximum of 4 or 5 Amex credit cards. This does not apply to Amex charge cards.
Amex Application Rule 4: Amex 10 Charge Card Rule
- You may get approved for a maximum of 10 Amex charge cards. This applies to the: Amex Centurion, Platinum, Gold, Green, and Plum Cards.
Amex Application Rule 5: Credit Score Requirements
- This answer the question of “What credit score do you need for American Express cards?”
- Unfortunately, the Amex credit score requirements are not published and they may vary from one credit card or charge card to another. I’d personally feel good about applying with a 670 score or higher. Also note that Amex charge cards tend to be easier to get approved for than Amex credit cards.
Amex Application Rule 6: Amex Hard Inquiry vs. Amex Soft Inquiry
- Your first Amex credit card / charge card application will likely involve a hard inquiry.
- Your second (and beyond) Amex credit card / charge card application will likely involve a soft inquiry.
- NOTES: If you begin your Amex journey on the personal side, you may get another hard inquiry on your 1st business card. If you begin your Amex journey on the business side, you may get another hard inquiry on your 1st personal card.
Amex Application Rule 7: Amex Once In A Lifetime Rule | Amex Once Per Lifetime Rule
- You can get a welcome offer on each Amex card only ONCE.
- Exceptions: Amex No Lifetime Language offers, Waiting about 5+ years for Amex’s system to refresh
Amex Financial Reviews
- Amex financial reviews are not common but may occur at any time. A likely trigger is having a lot of credit from Amex, especially compared to your income. Consider an Amex credit limit decrease or closing an account before applying for a new card if you think your total lines with Amex are getting (too) high.
Amex Pop Up Window
- This is a message saying you’re not eligible for the welcome bonus. Occurs before fully submitting.
- What may cause it?
- Receiving too many Amex welcome bonuses*
- Receiving too many introductory APR offers*
- Opening too many Amex cards*
- Closing too many Amex cards*
- If you’ve had the same card in the past
- Other factors
* Within a given period of time (not publicly known).
Amex Reconsideration Line Number
- If your application goes to ‘pending’ or gets denied, consider calling the Reconsideration Line to see if an underwriter can turn the decision around into an approval.
- Phone #: 1 (800) 567-1083
What I Do BEFORE Applying For an Amex Card…
1. USE EXISTING Amex cards regularly.
2. LOOK AT current balances. If any are high, pay them off.
3. COUNT current cards. If at a limit (e.g. 4/5 credit cards), then close 1 card. Don’t transfer the line to another card.
4. COUNT current limits. If total lines are getting really large, request a credit-limit decrease (or close a card).
5. MAKE SURE you’re in compliance with 1/5 and 2/90 Rules.
7. CHECK if you’ve had the card before. If yes, check for ‘lifetime language.’
7. APPLY!

As of September 22, 2022, both Amex and Chase launched all-new Marriott Bonvoy credit cards with $250 annual fees.
Here are the main benefits of the two cards, taken from the press release (link above):
- 6X Marriott Bonvoy Points on purchases at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy
- 4X Marriott Bonvoy Points on up to $15,000 in combined purchases per year at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets
- 2X Marriott Bonvoy Points on all other eligible purchases
- 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy Bonus Points with each qualifying stay
- Complimentary Gold Elite status
- A Free Night Award (redemption level at or under 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points) after making $15,000 in purchases per year. Certain hotels have resort fees.
- 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year toward higher Elite status
You’ll notice that the two credit cards are nearly IDENTICAL, however…
a. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful is issued by Chase and runs on the Visa network.
b. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful earns 4X points at supermarkets worldwide, not just within the U.S. (which is the case of the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy issued by Amex).
If you’re a big international traveler, you may find value in the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful due to it being a Visa and its lack of the U.S. restriction on grocery store purchases.
While these 2 new Marriott credit cards may have high price tags ($250/yr. each), at least they do offer complimentary Marriott Gold Elite status simply from having them. Previously, the only way to obtain that was via the old version of the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, which had a $450 annual fee at the time (i.e. prior to 9.22.2022).
That said, for many casual travelers who occasionally stay at Marriott hotels, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card from Chase ($95 annual fee) may be a more compelling card.
Regarding the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card, it also had several updates that were added back in July 2022 as follows:
- 7% Marriott Bonvoy Room Rate Discount
- Gold Elite Status, complimentary
- 4X Points on Global Dining (previously only in the U.S.)
What about the Ritz Carlton Credit Card? Here’s what the press release says:
- Card members who have The Ritz-Carlton Rewards™ Card from Chase, which is no longer available to new applicants, will receive the new 85K Anniversary Free Night Award. There is no change to The Ritz-Carlton Rewards™ Card annual fee.

🎬 VIDEO: Are Airline Credit Cards Worth it?
https://youtu.be/WhOdp8Qfyus
I logged into my Credit Karma account and saw that my credit score decreased in a big way! Previously it was 808, and now at 781, that represented a drop of 27 points! In the video I explain what happened (hint: it had to do with my credit utilization, the second largest factor of your credit score), and what I plan to do in order to increase my credit score back to where it was originally.
Your credit score can be broken down into 5 main credit factors, each of which has a different weight on your credit score. I like to remember the factors via the acronym: PHURLEMINA.
PH = Payment History (35% of your credit score): This represents how many on-time payments you’ve made on your credit account. The more, the better.
UR = Utilization Ratio (30% of your credit score): This represents how much of your credit limit you’re using, both on individual credit cards and across all credit card accounts. At any moment in time, you can calculate your utilization ratio by adding up your credit balances and dividing that total by the sum of your credit lines. In other words: Current Balance ÷ Credit Limit. Multiply the result by 100 to put in into percentage form.
LE = Length of Credit History (15% of your credit score): This is also called Average Length of Credit History, taking into account your oldest credit card, newest credit card, and any others in between.
MI = Mix of Accounts (10% of your credit score): This represents the different types of financial products on your credit report, like credit cards, auto loans, installment loans, etc. Generally, the credit bureaus like to see you’re financially responsible with different types of products.
NA = New Accounts (10% of your credit score): This includes any new credit card accounts you’ve opened and credit inquiries (i.e. hard inquiries / hard pulls on your credit report).
A lot of changes to your credit score are temporary and are easy to fix. So, if you see a credit score drop, learn which factors were involved, then focus on those areas to make your rebound happen a lot faster!

The Citi Premier Card is one of the best travel credit cards if your goal is simply to earn a bunch of travel rewards to pay for an upcoming vacation (it’s not a great card for insurance or protections as those were removed a few years ago).
As of the making of this video, the Citi Premier 80K bonus is still available for a limited time. Here’s the requirement:
- Earn 80,000 Citi ThankYou points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. The value of these points = $800 towards gift cards, cash back, and travel. The value could be potentially higher if you utilize Citi Transfer Partners in a strategic way.
Unlike a lot of other travel credit cards, it allows you to earn points in a lot of useful, everyday spending categories, including:
- 3X Air Travel
- 3X Hotels
- 3X Travel Agencies
- 3X Restaurants
- Supermarkets
- 3X Gas Stations
- 1X Other Purchases
The #1 benefit is probably the “$100 Annual Savings Benefit.” This allows you to get $100 off a single hotel stay costing $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees. In order for it to work, you’ll need to book the hotel via the Citi Travel Portal and charge it to your Citi Premier Card. This benefit is available once per calendar year, so it’s a great way to cover the $95 annual fee.
Since it earns Citi ThankYou points, it also works very well to make a Citi Trifecta. For instance, you can combine it with the Citi Double Cash credit card and the Citi Custom Cash credit card (which all earn ThankYou points) to cover different spend categories. Translation: use several cards together to earn rewards even faster!

🎬 VIDEO: Beginner’s Guide to Transfer Partners for BIG Value (Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One Credit Cards): https://youtu.be/ae1WayyrwnE
American Express Membership Rewards points are among the most valuable credit card rewards on the planet (right up there with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, and Capital One Venture Miles). Many people are aware of Amex credit cards, but very few understand how to redeem Amex points for travel in a way that gives them huge, outsized value.
If you want to save BIG money on travel and make that next vacation a lot more affordable, you’ve got to learn how to use Amex transfer partners. This involves transferring Amex points to other airline and hotel programs, then booking award flights and hotel stays on the partner’s website.
Here’s the current list of AMEX TRANSFER PARTNERS as of September 2022:
AIRLINES
- Aer Lingus Aer Club
- Aeromexico Club Premier
- Air Canada Aeroplan
- Air France KLM Flying Blue
- ANA Mileage Club
- Avianca LifeMiles
- British Airways Executive Club
- Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
- Delta SkyMiles
- Emirates Skywards
- Etihad Guest
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Iberia Plus
- JetBlue TrueBlue
- Qantas Frequent Flier
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
- Virgin Atlantic
HOTELS
- Choice Privileges
- Hilton Honors
- Marriott Bonvoy
All that said, using Amex transfer partners DOES NOT GUARANTEE big value. When it comes to airline miles, hotel points, credit card points, etc., a lot of these programs have different values. Plus, many of those airline and hotel programs have dynamic pricing, meaning the cash rates and rewards rates can fluctuate (even daily).
For that reason, it’s up to you to do the research and build a travel itinerary that yields a high value per point, and you’ll want to do that planning BEFORE doing any transfers.
In the end, the points game is all about using the fewest points possible to cover the biggest cash price possible (that way you save money to be used for other things)!
And if you're new to all this, check out my beginner's guide to transfer partners (including Amex) in the links below!

If you’ve ever wanted to travel the world for free (or close to it) or earn extra money to pay your monthly bills or invest into the stock market / other asset classes, then credit cards can be a really helpful financial tool. From the travel points and miles you can earn through some of the best credit card signup bonuses, to the ongoing cash back rewards from buying things you regularly buy, credit card rewards can be a fun way to supplement your income.
However, credit cards are neither good nor bad.
They’re simply a neutral financial tool that CAN be good or CAN be bad based on HOW you use them.
For that reason, once you’ve become a financially responsible individual by learning sound practices, then you’ll understand how credit cards can be used to your advantage.
In this video we’ll explore 10 HUGE MISTAKES that credit card beginners make so you can avoid them as you start your journey (and therefore increase your credit score faster, qualify for the best rates on a big purchase like a house or car, earn rewards, and more)!
Also, there are a lot of credit cards that are really popular (like the Amex Gold Card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred card). It’s true, they can be great for the right people, but that doesn’t mean they’re the right credit card for you.
That’s why it’s important to apply for the right credit cards based on where you are in your credit journey and also based on what you value / what your goals are.
Watch this video, educate yourself, and learn how to win with money and credit cards!
Here are my Top 10 Credit Card MISTAKES:
1. Using credit cards the wrong way
2. Applying for the wrong credit cards
3. Not understanding how credit cards work
4. Not understanding your credit card statement (i.e. your credit card bill)
5. Carrying a balance from month to month
6. Applying for credit cards too frequently
7. Not knowing when to pay your credit card bill (and paying interest)
8. Using a lot of your credit card limit (or maxing it out)
9. Missing a sign up bonus
10. Spending more than you’d normally spend

American Express credit cards offer a ton of value for certain types of people. Lately, a number of Amex cards have been getting annual fee increases along with additional benefits. Many of those benefits come in the form of credits valid at select partner merchants (e.g. Dell, Adobe, Indeed, etc.). So, if you wouldn’t normally spend at those businesses, then the current annual fee of $695 could be difficult to justify.
While the Amex Business Platinum Card did provide me with good value over the past cardmember year, especially with the Dell credits, I don’t see the same value for the next year.
So, I asked for an Amex retention offer to see if there’d be a way to justify paying the annual fee for the next year.
Unfortunately, I only received a $100 statement credit.
After running the numbers, I’d still end up paying Amex in order to keep the account open, so it made the most sense to close it and move on.
Keep in mind that Amex retention offers can vary from one person to another (i.e. overall account) and one card to another. They’re also targeted and not guaranteed, so it can still be worthwhile to ask at least once per year if an offer is available. That way if you’re on the fence about canceling your credit card, you can at least explore more options before taking that action. Also bear in mind that product changes (e.g. downgrading to a credit card with a lower annual fee or upgrading to a more premium credit card) can be another option. For the purposes of this situation, my downgrade options from the Amex Business Platinum Card were the Amex Business Gold Card and the Amex Business Green Card. However, I already have the Gold and the Green isn't a rewarding card.

🔗 MilesTalk Blog Post - Marriott Bonvoy Award Redemption Fee?
https://milestalk.com/marriott-bonvoy-award-redemption-fee/
Since at least mid-2021, a number of people have reported seeing fees charged to their Marriott hotel folios upon checkout. The line item is listed as “Rm Chrg - Reward Redemption” and may appear when you redeem Marriott Bonvoy points or a Marriott Free Night Award certificate for your stay. This fee is different from a hotel resort fee or a hotel destination fee and may appear for every night of your stay.
I recently stayed at the Sheraton Denver Downtown hotel and saw this “Rm Chrg - Reward Redemption” on my hotel bill for $43.00.
Fortunately, the hotel staff said it was an error and removed it without any hassle, and also mentioned that it shouldn’t have appeared in the first place.
Per a statement received by The Points Guy via a Marriott spokesperson back in December 2021, “A situation like this is typically due to a clerical error by the property as in this case. If this occurs, members should contact the front desk and/or the manager on duty to have it corrected and removed from their folio.”
Furthermore, the TPG blog post included the following, “While Marriott wouldn’t confirm exactly what those charges were, industry experts told TPG that they’re most likely related to the fee Marriott corporate is paying the hotel for the award stay.”
Perhaps this charge had something to do with that reimbursement to the Sheraton Denver Downtown (i.e. the owners of the property) from Marriott corporate (i.e. the loyalty program) since hotels do receive compensation for free night redemptions as mentioned above.
Regardless, always be sure to check your hotel bill upon checkout to make sure erroneous fees were not charged.
You can find your Marriott hotel bill online by doing the following:
1. Log into your Marriott Bonvoy account
2. Click on your name in the upper right-hand corner (i.e. to access the Main Menu)
3. Select the Activity tab
4. Scroll down until you see the itemized breakdown of your most recent stay. It should have a ‘Download’ link to retrieve your hotel bill.

🔗 DOCTOR OF CREDIT BLOG POST - Does Citi Deny You If You Have 6 Or More New Inquiries From One Credit Bureau Within Six Months?: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/citi-deny-6-new-inquiries-one-credit-bureau-within-six-months/
The Citi Premier Card is one of the best travel credit cards available right now and competes against other credit cards like the Amex Green Card, Amex Gold Card and the Chase Sapphire Preferred. And while it has an elevated welcome bonus for a limited time, it’s a great time to apply!
There’s also been some discussion about the “Citi 6 Inquiry Rule,” whereby Citi will deny a credit card application if you have 6 or more inquiries within the past 6 months on the credit report they pull (I accidentally thought it was the past 12 months in the video). It’s apparently a soft rule, meaning it may not be applied all the time. If you get denied for that reason, you may also be able to call the Citi Reconsideration Line and request they pull a different credit report that has a lower inquiry count. That could be a way to turn a denial into an approval.
At the time of applying for the Citi Premier Card, I’ve got 6 hard inquiries on my Experian credit report (and I had a good feeling that Citi would pull Experian for my application).
So, this application will also be a test of whether or not this 6 Inquiry Rule will be applied to my situation.
Let’s see what happens!
Here’s some more info about the Citi Premier Card…

🎬 VIDEO: Beginner’s Guide to Transfer Partners for BIG VALUE (Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One Credit Cards)
https://youtu.be/ae1WayyrwnE
VALUE OF AMEX POINTS | What Are Amex Points Worth?
1. In general and on average, Amex points are worth 1.7¢ per point when using Amex transfer partners (example: 10,000 points = $170). However, these types of redemptions are normally achieved with international airlines in a premium cabin during a long-haul flight.
2. For hotels, car rentals, cruises & vacations booked through the Amex Travel Portal, Amex points are worth a flat rate of 0.7¢ per point (example: 10,000 points = $70).
3. For flights booked through the Amex Travel Portal and for luxury hotels booked through the Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts program, Amex points are worth a flat rate of 1.0¢ per point (example: 10,000 points = $100).
For the purposes of this video, we’ll use 1 Amex Point = 1.7¢ for comparison to other programs.
The 6 Amex Transfer Partners you should likely AVOID are as follows…
1. Hilton Honors (1:2) - Hilton Honors points are worth 0.5¢ on average and the program also has dynamic pricing.
2. Marriott Bonvoy (1:1) - Marriott Bonvoy points are worth 0.7¢ on average and the program also has dynamic pricing.
3. Choice Privileges (1:1) - Choice Privileges points are worth 0.6¢ on average.
4. JetBlue True Blue (1:1) - JetBlue points are worth 1.3¢ on average and the program also has 2 major limiting factors that prevent you from getting big, outsized value: (a) It’s a revenue-based rewards program (b) It’s a U.S. airline subject to the Amex Excise Tax Offset Fee.
5. Delta Air Lines (1:1) - Delta SkyMiles are worth 1.1¢ on average. The program is also subject to dynamic pricing and it’s a U.S. airline subject to the Amex Excise Tax Offset Fee.
6. Hawaiian Airlines (1:1) - Hawaiian miles are worth 1.0¢ on average. The loyalty program is semi-dynamic in that it has region-based redemption ranges that can vary by demand and fare class. Again, it’s a U.S. airline subject to the Amex Excise Tax Offset Fee.
EXCEPTIONS
1. You’ve done the math & it makes sense.
2. You need to ‘top off’ your balance in another program.
3. A limited-time transfer bonus is available (and you’ve done the math & it makes sense).
4. You’re transferring Amex points into miles on Airline A at a loss / breakeven / gain, and then will use those miles to fly on partner Airline B at a GAIN compared to the average Amex point value.
AMEX CREDIT CARDS WITH TRANSFER PARTNERS (Hint: if they earn Amex Membership Rewards points, then they have access to Amex transfer partners)

- Amex Green Card (plus the business version)

🎬 VIDEO - Chase 5/24 Rule Explained
https://youtu.be/muJEN8C86JY
WHAT IS THE CHASE 5/24 RULE? (Chase 5/24 Rule Explained)
Chase will automatically deny a credit card application if you’ve opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the last 24 months that appear on your credit report. This includes closed credit card accounts within the past 24 months.
So say you’ve opened 2 Citi credit cards (like the Citi Custom Cash and the Citi Double Cash), plus 2 American Express credit cards (like the Amex Gold Card and Amex Platinum Card), plus 1 Chase credit card (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred). In total, that’s 5 credit card accounts across all issuers. If you’ve opened all of those in the past 24 months, then you’ll need to wait until your ‘count’ is 4 credit cards or fewer within your current 24-month look-back period.
HOW TO CHECK CHASE 5/24 STATUS
While you can use apps or programs like Credit Karma, Credit Journey by Chase, and others, I’ve found the easiest way is to use the Experian mobile app (with a free Experian account). Simply follow these steps:
1. Sign up for a free Experian account
2. Download the mobile app & log in
3. View all cards from newest to oldest (use the ‘Views’ feature in the top right corner)
4. Count the credit cards you’ve opened in the last 24 months
The Experian app makes it very easy to see your credit cards by year, in order, and with the exact Open Date displayed in 1 scrollable list.
DO BUSINESS CARDS COUNT TOWARDS 5/24?
Almost always no. As long as they do not appear on your personal credit report, then business credit cards will not count towards 5/24. Known exceptions of business credit cards that do report to the personal side include Discover and TD Bank.
ALSO NOTE...
The date you’re ‘officially’ below the Chase 5/24 Rule will likely not be the exact date your card turns 2 years old. Rather, it’s recommended to wait at least until the 1st day of the next month after your card’s 2-year anniversary. That way you allow extra time for your credit report to update. Personally, I like to wait closer to 1 month to ensure that both my credit report and Chase’s system are completely up to date.

There are MANY credit cards to choose from. We can talk about the best credit cards for cash back or the best credit cards for travel or the best credit cards for beginners. All of those topics are GREAT to help you identify cards that could be worth adding to your wallet.
However…it’s also important to identify the credit cards to AVOID. That way you’ll know if the interest rates or annual fees are too high, if the rewards offer bad value, and if the benefits don’t have a strong value proposition.
I broke this video down into 6 separate categories to identify the worst credit card in each one:
1. The Worst Credit Card for Financial Health
2. The Worst Luxury Credit Card/ Worst Premium Credit Card
3. The Worst Airline Credit Card
4. The Worst Hotel Credit Card
5. The Worst Cash Back Credit Card
6. The Worst Store Credit Card
In each section, I explain why the credit cards are not worth getting and also offer some tips as to which credit cards you may want to get instead.
A few examples of some of the BEST credit cards for travel (plus a few that work for cash back, too) include…
1. Chase Sapphire Preferred for a low-fee travel card
2. Chase Sapphire Reserve for a premium travel credit card with easy-to-use rewards
3. Amex Green Card and Wells Fargo Autograph Cards for an all-in-one card setup
4. Amex Gold Card for dining and grocery spend
5. Amex Platinum Card for a premium travel credit card (and one of the best credit cards for lounge access)
6. Citi Premier Card as a great credit card to earn travel rewards at home within some very useful categories like groceries, gas, and restaurants
7. U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve Card as one of the best credit cards for mobile wallet purchases, including at Costco and Target
8. Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited Cards for cash back and/or completing a Chase Trifecta setup
9. Citi Custom Cash Card as an awesome flexible rewards credit card that can give you 5X points in different categories every billing cycle
10. Citi Double Cash Card or Wells Fargo Active Cash Card as a solid option to earn 2% cash back on all purchases (i.e. a solid non-category / non-bonus spend card … also called catch-all credit card)
11. Capital One Venture X for a premium travel credit card with one of the lowest annual fees, plus benefits that are easy to maximize (including Priority Pass lounge access, Capital One Lounge access, a $300 travel credit to be used via the Capital One Travel portal, and 10,000 bonus points each account anniversary)

American Express cards can provide fantastic value both for cash back rewards or travel rewards in the form of Amex Membership Rewards points. Here are 7 hacks to help you get more value with Amex signup bonuses:
1. Clear cache / use incognito or private browser windows. Then, go to the Amex website and browse offers (or copy & paste an Amex referral link into the browser). This will make it look like you’re visiting Amex’s site for the first time and hopefully you’ll see elevated offers.
2. Amex No Lifetime Language Offers (NLL Offers). When targeted, you may see offers that do not have the following text: “The welcome offer, intro APRs, and intro plan fees are not available to applicants who have or have had this card.” That’s the Amex lifetime language, and if it’s not present, then you may be able to get the welcome offer again.
3. Amex Popup Window / Amex Popup Jail: Amex will let you know if you’re ineligible for a welcome offer BEFORE a credit check is performed. If you DO receive the pop-up, you can Cancel the Application. If you DO NOT receive the pop-up, you can Continue & Submit. If you get approved, you can receive / earn the offer.
4. Amex Lifetime Rule: Amex may only have a 5-year look-back period. If you’ve had a certain card before, then normally you’d be ineligible to get the welcome bonus again. However, if 5 or so years have passed, you could submit an Amex credit card application for the same card & see if you can get approved. Remember, the Amex popup window is your friend :D
5. Refer Your Player 2: Use the Amex Refer A Friend opportunity. Once you get an Amex credit card, you’ll have access to your own referral links. Send them to your Player 2. If they get approved, they’ll get their own signup bonus AND you’ll get a referral bonus. This is a great way to earn Amex points FAST!
6. Check Multiple Channels: Amex is known to show different offers via different marketing channels. So, be sure to check your direct mail, email, online website, referral links, pop-ups that may show within your Amex account, banner ads, partner websites (like Resy.com), etc.
7. Maxed-Out Denial to Approval Method: There’s a lot to explain with this one (watch the video for details) :D

There are a TON of American Express credit cards available today, some of the best and most known are:
- Amex Platinum Card
- Amex Gold Card
- Amex Green Card
- Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card
- Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card
- Amex Everyday Credit Card
- Amex Everyday Preferred Credit Card
- Amex Cash Magnet Card
- Amex Blue Business Plus Card
Despite all of the great Amex cards today, my FIRST Amex card is actually no longer available (it was discontinued a number of years ago).
It was called the Blue Sky from American Express Card.
Here’s some information about it!
Welcome Bonus
- Usually the card had no signup bonus, but occasionally you could earn 7,500 bonus points after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months. The value of those points was $100 towards travel purchases as a statement credit.
Rewards - Earning
- Earn 1 point per dollar spent, that’s it!
Rewards - Redeeming
- There were a variety of different redemption options. The highest value option was for travel via statement credit, where 7,500 points = $100 (i.e. 1.33¢ per point). Other options included gift cards, merchandise, and cash back, all of which were a lower value, often between 0.72¢ – 0.77¢ per point. You also had to redeem in 7,500-point increments and do so within 6 billing cycles of the charge(s) posting to your account. Furthermore, you could not convert the rewards into Amex Membership Rewards points, or vice versa.
Annual Fee
- None
Foreign Transaction Fees
- Yes, 2.7%
Insurance, Protections & Other Benefits
- Car rental loss and damage insurance
- Access to the Global Assist hotline
- Roadside Assistance
- Travel accident insurance
- Extended warranty protection
- Return protection
- Purchase protection
- Free 2-day shipping at selected merchants through ShopRunner
