You have too many active accounts or too much available credit (Previously I had 6 Chase credit cards on the personal side) 2. One or more credit cards have a high balance compared to the credit line 3. Insufficient installment loan information 4. One or more recent requests for new credit (Most recent was about 1.5 weeks prior as I was going for 2 Chase credit card approvals in 1 month) WHICH CREDIT BUREAU DID CHASE USE? - Chase used Experian for my personal credit card (IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card). However, Chase may pull a different bureau based on location, and they may also pull 2 reports. WHICH CREDIT SCORING SYSTEM DID CHASE USE? - Chase used their own “Chase Proprietary Score,” ranging from 250 – 900. MY CREDIT SCORE - 764, based on Chase’s Proprietary Score as of 7.22.2022 KEY FACTORS ADVERSELY AFFECTING CREDIT SCORE 1. Number of credit cards with a balance close to the credit line 2. Insufficient installment loan information 3. Number of requests for new credit in the past 3 months (for me this was 4 inquiries in 3 months) 4. Moreover, I wanted to receive that anniversary free night award roughly at the time as the one from my IHG Premier Business Credit Card (I was approved for that card about 11 days prior). In other words, the goal is to receive 2 IHG free nights every July / August. Rather than waiting another year until July 2023, I decided to go for the card now to see if I could get an approval! First, the welcome offer of 140,000 IHG points is great; the approximate value is around $700 towards IHG Hotels. Second, one of the main reasons why I like hotel credit cards so much is that many come with an annual free night certificate. The IHG Business Card offers one valued up to 40,000 points, and you can top it off with as many additional IHG points as you like. For example, if you want to stay at a property costing 60,000 points, then you could redeem the free night certificate and add an additional 20,000 points. Third, the IHG Business credit card earns 10X points at IHG Hotels, so I’d like to use it for my paid stays. When you combine that 10X multiplier with the additional 10X you earn for simply being an IHG Rewards member, plus the additional 6X via IHG Platinum Elite Status, that’s a total of 26X points on paid IHG hotel stays! I made sure to use my 2 existing Barclays credit cards for a variety of transactions in the month prior to applying for this new American Airlines credit card. 4. At first, I had a moderately high utilization on my credit report (~42%) from my Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Despite having inquired for Amex retention offers nearly every year, I never received one for the Schwab Platinum Card. But with a new year comes a new opportunity to try again! When it comes to the Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card and Amex Green Card you DEFINITELY want to make sure that the cards work for your lifestyle (that is, how you spend your money, how often you travel, your financial goals, etc.). That’s because each one of these cards carries a large annual fee ($695, $250 and $150 respectively), so in a way you’re prepaying for benefits upfront each year. As long as you value the benefits and would normally spend money in those areas, then all checks out. If not, then you’ll likely want to reconsider the card. Instead of canceling or downgrading / product changing right away, you can ask for an Amex retention offer to see if there are some bonus points, statement credits, or other offers that can help you make sense of renewing the card for another year. After chatting with Amex Customer Support, I received 3 different retention offers: 1. Earn 40,000 Membership Rewards Points after spending $3K in 3 months 2. Earn a $400 statement credit after spending $3K in 3 months 3. Receive a $150 statement credit with no spend requirement I opted for the 1st one. To me, 40K Amex Membership Rewards Points are worth $440 when redeemed via my Schwab Platinum Card into my Charles Schwab brokerage account as cash back. So for the next year, my out-of-pocket cost will be: $695 - $440 = $255. AMEX MEMBERSHIP REWARDS POINTS - REDEEM FOR: I redeem my Amex points for cash back via the Schwab Platinum Card. This gives 1.10¢ per point when redeemed to my Charles Schwab brokerage account, which is significantly better than the regular Amex Platinum Card (0.7¢ per point via statement credit). Example: 50,000 Points = $550. Without the Schwab Platinum Card, those points would only be worth $350. - USE FOR: Non-monthly expenses | Investments 2. CHASE ULTIMATE REWARDS POINTS - REDEEM FOR: I redeem my Chase points for travel primarily and cash back secondarily. This is typically done via my Chase Sapphire Preferred card (CSP), which gives 1.25¢+ per point for travel (50K points = $625) and 1.0¢ per point for cash back (50K points = $500). I may also use the Chase Transfer partners occasionally (esp. World of Hyatt) when I can obtain 1.50¢+ on avg. (50K points = $750). - USE FOR: Flights, hotels, car rentals, etc. primarily | Non-monthly expenses & investments secondarily 3. CAPITAL ONE VENTURE MILES - REDEEM FOR: I redeem Capital One Venture Miles exclusively for travel via the Capital One Venture X card, which gives me 1.0¢ per mile (or more via transfer partners). That makes 50,000 miles = $500. Cash back would yield 50% less value. - USE FOR: Non-chain hotels | Cover travel expenses when I’m saving my other credit card rewards for a different trip. 4. HOTEL REWARDS: POINTS & FREE NIGHT CERTIFICATES - REDEEM FOR: Hotels. My main programs are Marriott Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, Hilton Honors, and IHG Rewards. - REDEMPTION PRIORITY: I redeem my Free Night Certificates first because they expire after 1 year. I’ll then redeem hotel points as those never expire as long as you have qualifying account activity (earn / redeem) every: - Marriott Bonvoy: 24 months - World of Hyatt: 24 months - Hilton Honors: 24 months - IHG Rewards: 12 months 5. AIRLINE REWARDS: POINTS & MILES - REDEEM FOR: I redeem airline miles for flights. The 3 programs I focus most on are American Airlines AAdvantage miles, Southwest Rapid Rewards points, and Frontier Miles. - USE FOR: Flights booked directly with the airline. Most of my travels are domestic. 6. CASH BACK - REDEEM FOR: The rewards earned from my cash back credit cards are redeemed for…cash! This may be a direct deposit to a checking account or savings account, a statement credit to lower my bill, or a check via mail. - USE FOR: Non-monthly expenses | Investments | Fun! FINAL NOTES… - When it comes to travel, I almost always try to use air miles & hotel points FIRST. That’s because they tend to get devalued faster & they tend to have more limited use. - ‘Bank Points’ (Amex Membership Rewards Points, Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, Citi ThankYou Points, Capital One Venture Miles, etc.) tend to hold their value much better and have much broader uses, making them more valuable. It’s simply an incentive to turn the feature on and ‘consider’ using it. HOW TO CHECK IF YOU’RE TARGETED 1. EMAIL. Subject lines may vary. A recent one was: “Good news, [your name]! You’re eligible to earn 30,000 points by activating this flexible payment option.” 2. MAIL. Check your mailbox for a promotional brochure / flyer from American Express. 3. LINK. This may appear when you log into your Amex account and select one of your eligible charge cards (Amex Platinum, Amex Gold, Amex Green, etc. – both business charge cards and personal charge cards have this feature). 5. AMEX OFFERS. Check this section of your account on each of your Amex charge cards. 6. STATEMENTS & ACTIVITY TAB. Log into your Amex account and follow these steps: - Select a charge card - Click on the Statements & Activity tab on the top menu - Choose the Recent Transactions menu option on the left side - Look for an offer to enroll in Pay Over Time on the page, likely underneath Pending Charges and Posted Charges. HOW TO GET TARGETED AMEX OFFERS FOR PAY OVER TIME Amex charge cards usually come with the Pay Over Time feature already activated when you get approved for them. Since the bonus points opportunity is for the activation itself, you’re unlikely to get targeted if the feature is already on. So, turn it off on all charge cards, then simply let time pass to see if an offer comes your way. HOW TO TURN OFF AMEX PAY OVER TIME 1. Log into your Amex account 2. Select one of your Amex charge cards 3. Click on the Account Services tab on the top menu 4. Click on the Payment & Credit Options tab on the left-side menu 5. Choose the ‘Pay Over Time: Inactive’ option to turn it off 6.
