France And Allied Forces Conduct Largest Military Training In Decades
France has conducted its largest military exercise in decades, known as Exercise Orion 23.
Approximately 7,000 soldiers, including assets from host nation France and joint assets from the US and the UK, participated in the second phase of Exercise Orion in France in February 2023.
In a video obtained by Newsflash from NATO, various shots of French paratroopers can be seen landing in Castres.
It also shows French amphibious troops coming ashore in the town of Sete, as well as interviews with French officers.
Naval assets from NATO allies such as Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain also participated in the exercise, which focused on defensive operations on land, in the air, at sea, and in cyberspace.
The French Air and Space Force played a significant role in the exercise by deploying three A400M transport aircraft, which dropped 700 French troops from the 8th Marines Infantry Parachute Regiment and an attached company from the 17 Engineer Parachute Regiment over an airfield in Castres.
In another phase of the exercise, three more aircraft dropped 48 hours’ worth of equipment and supplies for the force to secure and hold the area.
During the exercise, 700 amphibious troops also came ashore from the French Navy's amphibious ships Tonnerre and Mistral, along with vehicles and equipment.
They disembarked in the coastal town of Sete before heading north to practice manoeuvres and operations.
The exercise aimed to test and improve France's military readiness and interoperability with its allies in the event of a large-scale conflict.

The exercise is reportedly aimed at testing the troops' combat readiness and their ability to engage in multinational training and exercises across Europe, working alongside NATO allies and regional security partners.
The 4th Infantry Division (4 ID) is currently on a mission in Europe to provide combat-credible forces to V Corps, America's forward-deployed corps in Europe.
In the video, soldiers can be seen firing their weapons and engaging in tactical manoeuvres as they work together with their NATO counterparts to complete the training.
The soldiers are equipped with a variety of weapons, including rifles, machine guns, and tanks, which they use to take out targets in the field.
The exercise is just one of many that the US military has been conducting in Europe in recent years, as part of an effort to maintain a strong military presence in the region and ensure the security of its NATO allies.
These exercises also provide an opportunity for US troops to work with their counterparts from other countries and improve their interoperability.

Supposed 2,500-Year-Old Royal Pottery Find Declared Fake
A small pottery shard that was believed to be a rare 2,500-old find inscribed with the name of the Persian king Darius the Great turned out to be nothing more than a school study aid.
The discovery - made by a hiker passing through the Tel Lachish National Park in Israel - was officially declared a fake by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).
The Authority said in a statement obtained by Newsflash that the shard had been created by an expert demonstrating inscription techniques to her students.
Professor Gideon Avni - the IAA’s chief scientist - apologised on behalf of the scientific institution and took responsibility for the misinformation.
This came after numerous local media reports described it as the first-ever discovery of an inscription bearing the name of the ancient ruler anywhere in Israel.
The researcher who accidentally left the shard on site said it was done unintentionally and without malice.
The find bearing an inscription reading: "Year 24 of Darius" - made by Eylon Levy in December - was initially dated back to 498 BC, when Persia ruled what is now modern-day Israel.
The park where the pottery was discovered sits on the site of an ancient city called Lachish.
It used to be a major fortified city that was responsible for collecting taxes for the Persian king's treasuries.
As a result of this unfortunate occurrence, the IAA vowed to refresh proper procedures and policies with all foreign expeditions working in the country.
