Drug Traffickers Seized With 2 Million Pills In Fake Tomatoes
This is the moment Saudi customs officials find a cache of more than two million illegal amphetamine tables hidden inside fake tomatoes.
The pills - with a street value of USD 50 million - had been cleverly concealed within a shipment of fruit and veg being driven over the border from Jordan.
Inspectors found thousands of lifelike plastic tomatoes which unscrewed to reveal a secret compartment inside stashed among real-life toms and pomegranates.
Official video footage of the bust shows Saudi authorities seizing a lorry at the Al Haditha land port on Friday, 24th February.
After removing the cargo, sniffer dogs are seen identifying the suspicious containers before they are opened by inspectors.
The pills were identified as highly addictive amphetamine fenethylline, also known by the brand name Captagon.
ISIS fighters became hooked on the pills as they are said to boost energy and aggression.
They are the main centre of production is now in Syria, one of the last Islamic State strongholds.
The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority of Saudi Arabia said in a statement on Friday, 3rd March: "An attempt to smuggle more than two million Captagon pills, which was found hidden in a consignment of 'tomatoes and pomegranates' that came to the Kingdom through the Haditha port, was thwarted."
They said that in total, they had seized 2,015,116 pills.
The Saudi authorities added: "The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority confirmed that it is continuing to tighten customs control over the Kingdom’s imports and exports, and stands guard against attempts by smugglers, in order to achieve the security of society and protect it from these pests, in cooperation and continuous coordination with the General Directorate for Drug Control."
The shipment, according to local media, was worth up to USD 50 million (GBP 41.6 million).
Officials said one person had been arrested and the General Directorate of Narcotics Control is currently looking for other offenders inside the Kingdom.
The seizure comes after the authorities in Abu Dhabi arrested a man after he attempted to smuggle 4.5 million Captagon tablets hidden inside food bins.
The suspect, whose identity was not disclosed by the police, was busted after authorities received a tip-off.
He had already completed the import paperwork when officers found the drugs inside tins labelled as green beans.
After his arrest, the Head of the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the Criminal Security Sector of Abu Dhabi Police, General Tahir Gharib Al-Dahiri, revealed that the operation was successful.
He added that the arrest followed a secret surveillance operation which led to police raiding a warehouse in an undisclosed location.
Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "He [Al-Dahiri] added that the professionalism of the control elements resulted in the failure of the accused's scheme and confiscation of approximately 4.5 million Captagon pills and the tools used in preparing and packaging of narcotics for trade and promotion."
Police did not disclose the value of the drug, but it was estimated at between USD 60 million (GBP 50 million) and USD 100 million (GBP 84 million) based on data from the International Addiction Review journal.
The drug has been reported to be a central nervous system (CNS) stimulator with stronger and longer-lasting effects on fighting aggression, detachment, cognitive enhancement, and alertness.
It has increasingly become the drug of choice among youth in Gulf Arab states after it gained fame when it was used and traded by Islamic State fighters in the mid-2010s.

Man Charged With Killing Four Including Daughter,15
A man in the USA has been charged with the murder of four people after a child who lived in the same house video called a relative for help.
The suspect, identified as Domenico Gigante, 36, from the city of Rockledge, in Brevard County, Florida, USA, was arrested and detained for shooting his teenage daughter and three other people on Wednesday, 1st March.
He was later charged with four counts of first-degree premeditated murder, after officers from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office found the victim's bodies in a home on Alan Shephard Avenue in the community of Canaveral Grove.
They were later identified as Kiara Terwilliger, 15, and her mother Constance Terwilliger, 35, along with Glenda Terwilliger, 63, and Michael Watson, 36, who all lived in the house at the time of the incident.
Reports revealed that cops also found two children, aged 6 and 9, inside the residence who were unharmed.
The investigations reportedly began in the early morning after one of the children video called another person who was told that people had been shot at the residence.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said: "Something like FaceTime, or something of that nature, through video contact, the small child told the reportee what had taken place and what they had seen at the house.
"[The caller] kept the child on the video the entire time as they were concerned for the child's safety."
The person, who was reportedly a relative of the child, then dialled 911 at around 2am.
Brevard County Sheriff's Office said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "The caller advised that he was contacted by a minor child, who also lived at the residence.
"The caller responded to the residence where he found the decedents, as well as two minor children, who were not injured.
"Deputies responded and confirmed the deaths.
"The two minor children are currently in the process of being reunited with other family members."
Latter investigations showed that Gigante was in a relationship with Constance and was the father of Kiara.
He reportedly left his house at around 1am on 1st March and travelled to the victims' residence.
Upon arrival, he broke in and shot them, before leaving the place and heading home.
Ivey said: "I'm going to tell you that this is an extremely violent individual with an extremely violent past dating back as far as 2005, who should have never been on our streets, where he could take the lives of this entire family."
Gigante is currently being held at the Brevard County Jail Complex with no bond.
The motive for the quadruple homicide remains unclear.
It was not disclosed if he has entered a plea or retained a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

Little Hope Of Survivors Now As At Least 63 Believed Dead In Shipwreck Off Coast Of Italy 5
This video footage shows the shocking conditions with freezing winds in which rescuers are still searching for any survivors among the migrants that ended up in the water when their wooden boat broke apart on rocks off the coast of Calabria.
The tragedy killed at least 61 people, among them women, children, and an infant. The death toll is anticipated to increase as is expected that few people would have stood a chance of surviving the bad weather currently in the Mediterranean Sea.
Three lifeless bodies washed ashore on the beach close to Staccato di Cutro in Southern Italy early on Sunday morning.
According to reports, the boat had between 140 and 150 individuals on board when it left Izmir, Turkey, a few days earlier. 80 people who were clinging to the wreckage of the boat were pulled from the ocean. The survivors were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.
The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, blamed people traffickers for the Treasury. She proclaimed that it was unlawful to send 200 people off in inclement weather when they were crammed aboard a small boat that was only 20 meters long. She also denounced the traffickers for gambling with the lives of the men, women, and children that were desperate for a ticket that they believed would give them new opportunities in Europe.
Matteo Piantedosi, Italy's interior minister, is urging new legislation to stop perilous travel. He said: "We must take every possible measure to deter individuals from being duped by the fictitious promise of a better life and from embarking on these perilous journeys, he proclaimed.
The hard-right government of Meloni made stopping migrant boats a primary goal, and last week the parliament passed legislation that make it more challenging for Charities to conduct rescue operations. They've changed the law a little bit so that saving lives is now against the law.
Pope Francis prayed for the migrants who escaped the shipwreck and all of the victims on Sunday at the Holy City. He expressed gratitude to all who had helped and hoped that the Virgin Mary would heed his request for help.
More than 11,000 people have traveled to Italy by water so far this year, 678 of them arrived in Calabria. It's a record-breaking number all the more remarkable because of the bad weather.
Usually, rather than those from the Middle East and Asia, people from African nations are the ones that arrive. Why not travel to the Mediterranean if you're looking for a fun vacation? The majority of these boats leave from Libya.
After all, we live in a small world. The Central Mediterranean route only receives 8.3% of arrivals from Pakistan, 6.7% from Afghanistan, and a pitiful 0.7% from Iran. With a staggering 17.3% of the total tourists hailing from Ivory Coast and 13.1% from Guinea, Africa makes up the majority of the remaining travellers.
The remaining countries are all from other parts of Africa, notably North Africa. Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have tragically died while using this route. Thus, remember to pack your life jacket if you're making travel plans.

Famous Chef Helps Soldiers Prepare Food For Evacuated Citizens
A famous Turkish chef joined forces with emergency crews working in evacuation centres to make sure citizens affected by the earthquake were well-fed and taken care of.
This footage obtained by Newsflash from the Turkish Ministry of National Defence shows famous nationwide chef Mehmet Yalcinkaya helping prepare food for people evacuated in Hatay Province.
Other cooks join him as they fill up giant cooking kettles with hot soups and stews that are to be handed out among the hungry citizens.
The Ministry said in a short statement obtained by Newsflash: "Famous chef Mehmet Yalcinkaya and our Mehmetcik [an affectionate term that refers to soldiers of the Turkish Army] cooked delicious meals in Hatay."
Mehmet Yalcinkaya is an award-winning chef who has worked in gastronomy kitchens all over Europe, including in France and Italy.
He is especially known for his role as a jury member on MasterChef Turkey, a Turkish adaptation of the UK's famous cooking show.

Supposed 2,500-Year-Old Royal Pottery Find Declared Fake
A small pottery shard that was believed to be a rare 2,500-old find inscribed with the name of the Persian king Darius the Great turned out to be nothing more than a school study aid.
The discovery - made by a hiker passing through the Tel Lachish National Park in Israel - was officially declared a fake by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).
The Authority said in a statement obtained by Newsflash that the shard had been created by an expert demonstrating inscription techniques to her students.
Professor Gideon Avni - the IAA’s chief scientist - apologised on behalf of the scientific institution and took responsibility for the misinformation.
This came after numerous local media reports described it as the first-ever discovery of an inscription bearing the name of the ancient ruler anywhere in Israel.
The researcher who accidentally left the shard on site said it was done unintentionally and without malice.
The find bearing an inscription reading: "Year 24 of Darius" - made by Eylon Levy in December - was initially dated back to 498 BC, when Persia ruled what is now modern-day Israel.
The park where the pottery was discovered sits on the site of an ancient city called Lachish.
It used to be a major fortified city that was responsible for collecting taxes for the Persian king's treasuries.
As a result of this unfortunate occurrence, the IAA vowed to refresh proper procedures and policies with all foreign expeditions working in the country.

Comb Made From Ancient Human Skull Unearthed
A grim Iron Age comb made from part of a human skull has been unearthed by archaeologists at a dig in Cambridgeshire.
The comb - one of only three of its kind ever found - is about the size of a jam jar lid and has fine teeth cut into one end by craftsmen around 2,000 years ago.
It is not known whether the find was used as a comb for tangled hair or as a decoration.
It could - say experts - even have been part of the skull of an important tribal leader worn to keep his power alive.
A hole drilled through the bone shows it could have been worn as an amulet.
The comb was discovered by archaeologists from the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) in the English village of Bar Hill.
The only two other similar finds were also made in Cambridgeshire.
The item was one of 280,000 unearthed as part of excavations in a road improvement scheme between 2016 and 2018.
It is believed to date from 750 BC to 43 AD.
Boffins say objects made from human or animal bones were used as part of everyday life in Iron Age Britain.
MOLA Finds Team Lead Michael Marshall said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "It is possible this fascinating find represents a tradition carried out by Iron Age communities living solely in this area of Cambridgeshire.
"To be able to see such hyper-local influences in groups of people living over 2,000 years ago is truly astonishing.
"The Bar Hill Comb may have been a highly symbolic and powerful object for members of the local community.
"It is possible it was carved from the skull of an important member of Iron Age society, whose presence was in some way preserved and commemorated through their bones."
Dr Steve Sherlock, Archaeology Lead for the National Highways A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme, said: "This is a further example of the spectacular results from the excavations for the A14 improvements, adding detail and insight into our understanding of the human activity across Cambridgeshire and beyond."

Injured Skier Rescued After Eight-Hour Operation During Blizzard
A 57-year-old woman who was injured while skiing near some of the highest peaks in the Pyrenees mountain range has been rescued after an eight-hour operation carried out during a blizzard.
This footage, obtained from the Spanish Guardia Civil, shows the arduous rescue operation, with the injured skier being lowered down the mountain slope on a stretcher using a system of ropes. The images also show the rescuers battling a blizzard at night as they completed the rescue.
The skier, a 57-year-old woman, was rescued in the Tubos de Paderna area, near the town of Benasque, in the northern Spanish province of Huesca, on Sunday, 25th February, according to local media.
The operation, which took place near some of the Pyrenees' highest peaks, reportedly lasted eight hours and took place during a blizzard, with a lot of snow, poor visibility and very low temperatures.
The victim, who reportedly suffered an ankle injury that prevented her from making her way down the mountain on her own, has not been named but is said to be a Spanish tourist from the neighbouring region of Cinca Medio.
Local media explained that it was impossible for rescue helicopters to approach the area due to poor visibility and high winds, meaning that rescuers were dropped off near the injured tourist's location.
The rescuers, who were dropped off on the peak of Paderna, at an altitude of approximately 2,600 metres (8,530 feet), then made their way down the mountain to her location on skis.
They found the injured woman wearing warm clothes and sitting on her backpack. They offered her a hot drink and set up a makeshift shelter before preparing a stretcher and lowering her down the mountain using a system of ropes.
They were then assisted by other rescuers and a doctor, with the rescue operation finishing about 8pm.
The injured skier was then taken to the Llanos del Hospital resort area where she received medical attention.

Man Faces Jail For Posting Instagram Video Threatening Cops With AK-47
A man in the USA has been arrested after he posted a video online showing him driving by a police vehicle and warning he will shoot the cops inside with an AK-47 gun if they pull him over.
The offender, identified as Vernon E. Kelson, 22, is facing charges after he posted the footage on his Instagram page, 'Getbackgan.Hank', at around 1 pm on Saturday, 25th February.
In the video, Kelson can be seen holding the riffle outside the passenger seat window of his moving car and yelling when he spots a vehicle of the Miami-Dade Police Department at the side of the road in Florida, USA.
He then warns what he will do on the video to the police officers inside the car by saying: "If they pull this bitch over, it's going to go down."
It is not believed the police officers in the car knew what he was doing as he was driving from behind, but detectives from the Miami-Dade Police department reportedly saw the video while monitoring social media activity.
They then uncovered the footage from a known account and linked Kelson to a previous investigation.
Kelson, who was arrested on Tuesday (28th February) is facing charges including written threats to kill or do bodily harm, displaying a firearm while committing a felony and carrying a concealed firearm.
The video, which Miami-Dade Police shared on their Facebook page, was seen more than 2,500 times in less than 24 hours.
Director Alfredo Freddy' Ramirez said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: "Law enforcement officers put on their uniforms every day and leave their homes not knowing if they will return.
"I will not tolerate anyone, in any way, to threaten my officers or anyone bearing the badge on their chest.
"I will make available all of the resources of the Miami-Dade Police Department to bring those individuals to justice."

Moment Europol Most Wanted Fugitive Is Arrested In Hotel
This is the moment one of Europol's most wanted fugitives is busted in a hotel in Madrid.
The footage shows the moment the man, who has been named as Josip Mihajlovic, 27, by Croatian media, is arrested. He can be seen on his phone in the hotel lobby waiting for a lift when three plainclothes police officers suddenly enter and detain him.
They can be seen handcuffing Mihajlovic with him lying on his stomach on the floor.
They can be seen eventually lifting him to his feet before escorting him out of the hotel lobby.
The fugitive is said to be from Croatia and is wanted for serious crimes back home where he reportedly faces life imprisonment.
One of the crimes Mihajlovic, who is from Zagreb, is accused of is the attempted murder of a taxi driver named as Antun Cristan M., 30, in Dubrovnik in 2019, along with accomplice Maria Barisic, 25.
He also allegedly attempted to murder another man with a firearm in Croatia and got into a fight with a person who suffered broken bones and lost teeth.
The arrest reportedly took place on Monday, 20th February at an unnamed hotel in Madrid.
Newsflash obtained a statement from the Spanish National Police on Monday, 27th February, saying: "In an operation within the framework of the ENFAST network, the National Police detains in Madrid a fugitive wanted by the Croatian authorities for violent crimes.
"The arrested man had a legal claim issued for events that occurred in 2019, where he was involved in a fight in which he caused serious injuries to his victim.
"The fugitive was included in Europol's European Most Wanted list, and he was arrested in a central Madrid hotel when he went to meet his partner."
The Spanish authorities added: "Agents of the National Police, within the framework of the ENFAST network -European Network of Fugitive Search Teams-, have arrested a fugitive of Croatian origin with a very violent profile in Madrid. Wanted by the authorities of his country, he was involved in serious crimes that caused great social alarm in the Baltic country and for which he faces life imprisonment.
The detainee was claimed for events dating back to mid-2019, when he was in a disco in Croatia and was involved in a brawl in which he brutally beat another person who suffered fractures and lost teeth."
The authorities said that the fugitive has an "extensive criminal history", adding: "This criminal action joins the authorship of other serious criminal acts for which he was being investigated and for which he had even already gone to prison. In addition, a month before these events, he had tried to assassinate another man in his country of origin with a firearm.
"The fugitive was on Europol's European Most Wanted list and his location was dealt with within the framework of international police collaboration and cooperation through the ENFAST network for the search for fugitives.
"The investigations of the agents centred the fugitive in the east of our country, determining that he had spent a large part of last Christmas on the island of Ibiza and from where he later moved to Barcelona.
"The National Police investigators found out that he had met his partner in a central Madrid hotel on 20th February, taking advantage of the surprise factor and taking extreme security measures to arrest the fugitive. Among his belongings, falsified documentation was found with which he intended to evade police actions and avoid being discovered."

Illegal Immigrants Nabbed After Trying To Run From Cops Following High-Speed Chase
A recent incident played out like a scene from a movie as a Texas trooper pulled over a Ford F150 pickup truck carrying four illegal immigrants.
To the trooper's surprise, all four fled from the vehicle and darted into a nearby thicket, but the trooper quickly apprehended the driver and the others.
The incident happened on 5H-85 in Dimmit County, in the US state of Texas, on 13th February but the Texas Department of Public Safety did not release footage of it until 23rd February.
The driver was charged with smuggling people and evading arrest, and the four immigrants were referred to US Border Patrol.
The incident may have been comical, but it highlights the serious issue of illegal immigration along the US-Mexico border.
According to CBP Enforcement Statistics, there were 977,509 encounters with illegal immigrants by US Border Patrol in Fiscal Year 2021, the highest number since 2006.
The majority of these encounters were with individuals from Mexico, followed by Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.
These statistics demonstrate the ongoing challenge of securing the US border and preventing illegal immigration.
