This reinstatement of the once outlawed practice was possibly driven by nationalistic motives or the need to provide basic healthcare to a large population. Since its adoption acupuncture has been extensively studied and is now generally seen as ineffective, although some argue that it may have limited applications due to the placebo effect. 260823 The new three-part Netflix docuseries ‘MH370: The Plane that Disappeared’ was sold as a “first-class documentary” focusing primarily on the struggles of the next of kin of those on board the missing aircraft. Experts and family members hesitant about featuring in the documentary were assured by the production company, RAW TV, that they would stick to the facts and not dwell on baseless conspiracies. It was only after watching the trailer that they realised they had been duped. Rather than using this opportunity to explore technical areas to improve the general public’s understanding of what could and could not have happened to MH370, the documentarians – if you can call them that – chose to focus on the factually inaccurate conspiracy theories of armchair experts Jeff Wise and Florence de Changy. This led many who were deceived into starring in the documentary to denounce it. This included Grace Nathan, the daughter of a passenger on board the missing Malaysian aircraft, who, along with her father, has refused to watch the docuseries after seeing Jeff Wise in the trailer. Since its release, not only has the documentary been brutally panned, it has also been partially removed in Vietnam due to the misinformation it contains. Last month I attempted to counter a fraction of the misinformation spread by Jeff in the documentary and show that his theory is based on less than conjecture. Now I plan to tackle the third episode in the series and the claims made by Florence, who was convinced by a shadowy figure that MH370 was carrying stolen surveillance technology, forcing the Americans to shoot it down over the South China Sea. 070823 The recent aspartame panic bears similarities to the glyphosate hysteria of 2015, in terms of media-driven misinformation, fear, and the potential influence of special interest groups. Both cases involve the spread of inaccurate information, which has led to unwarranted public concern and distrust. And both these examples highlight the importance of critical thinking and examining multiple reliable sources to form a balanced understanding of what, at first glance, appears to be a very complex issue. 020723 Recently I was contacted by a veterinary technician who, after watching my video on “natural pet health advocate” Dr. Andrew Jones, reached out to let me know there is someone worse. His name is Jeff Hargettand he is the admin of a private Facebook group named ‘Holistic Help for Pets’. Infiltrating and documenting the group activities has been a deeply distressing and emotional experience, invoking feelings of shock, disgust, and sadness at what can only be described as animal abuse. 080623 “Alternative medicine” is a pernicious misnomer whose advocates purposely deceive the vulnerable into believing that their “treatments” are natural and more effective, or safer, than conventional ones. The fact that we live in a world where virtually the entirety of mankind’s knowledge can be accessed by a device we carry in a pocket, yet the use of alternative medicine is on the rise, is a testament to how pervasive quackery is in our society. The industry has become so lucrative that it has spawned its own cottage industry made from its own victims fighting it out online to see who can promote the most bizarre cure-all tonic. Social media has helped supercharge these narcissists with the video-sharing, cringe-inducing TikTok now on the frontline of this new wave of misinformation. Recently I stumbled upon a video of an unlicensed vet promoting a dog-dewormer as a cancer cure. Was it when he deliberately misrepresented himself as a professional engineer, when he sold faulty execution equipment which would cause a nightmarish death, or was it when he convinced holocaust deniers that he was an expert on gas execution? As strange as it sounds, I believe that Holocaust deniers like Zündel are potentially victims of Leuchter’s deception too. Despite having no formal qualifications, no real experience with gas chambers, and not just being inept but utterly clueless he convinced him that he was an expert in the field of gas execution. He took Zündel’s money, flew to Poland and botched his investigation to the point where even fellow Holocaust deniers have been critical of his findings. Or maybe Zündel knew exactly what kind of person Leuchter was. A fool with delusions of grandeur who would be incapable of designing an experiment to detect trace amounts of hydrogen cyanide in the gas chambers. The new three-part Netflix docuseries ‘MH370: The Plane that Disappeared’ is a podium for baseless conspiracy theories from people who are more interested in fame and notoriety than an actual explanation for the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. This ethically dubious documentary, which offers cheap thrills at the cost of the dignity of those who perished, focuses on the factually inaccurate theories of armchair experts Jeff Wise and Florence de Changy. Based on nothing more than pure speculation, Wise asserts that MH370 was hacked by onboard Russian agents mid-flight in order to shift international focus away from the invasion and subsequent annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. Intel from shadowy figures led Florence to believe that MH370 was carrying stolen surveillance technology and that it was the Americans who caused the aircraft to go down in the sea. Neither theory is deserving of anyone’s attention, yet this drivel takes up an inordinate amount of the Netflix docuseries’ runtime. Personally I believe that the streaming giant is aware that, even by their standards, ‘MH370: The Plane that Disappeared’ is of poor quality, which is why they have resorted to tricking their audience into watching. Neither the trailer nor the blurb accurately portray the tone or the increasing conspiratorial direction of the documentary, which was how I was fooled into watching it. Wim Hof is a Dutch extreme athlete noted for his ability to withstand low temperatures earning him the nickname ‘The Iceman’. He holds a number of recorder related to cold exposure including: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle barefoot, and prolonged full-body contact with ice. He attributes these feats to his Wim Hof Method, a combination of meditation, breathing techniques, and frequent cold exposure. As well as helping him achieve his impressive records Wim also believes that his method can reduce symptoms of several diseases including: rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, corona virus and Parkinson’s disease. What sets Wim apart from other wellness gurus and those I would consider quacks is that he has happily invited scientists in to study him resulting in several publications in prestigious journals. When I started my foray into Holocaust Denial 5-years ago, I began by stating that no event of any significance in the world takes place without generating a flutter of conspiracy speculations. As unpleasant and potentially dangerous a belief in one or more of these conspiracies can be, they do, for the most part, come from a natural human desire to find an explanation for what appears to be unexplainable. However some historical events are so well documented that a belief in certain conspiracies comes from a much darker place where people feel compelled to bend and warp reality to justify their dislike or even hatred towards a certain group of people – and there is no better example of this than those who distort or flat-out deny the facts of the holocaust. Over the years I have countered what I consider to be the strongest arguments made by Holocaust denialists with reactive ease, but have not yet refuted Germar Rudolf’s book, The Chemistry of Auschwitz, leading some online to believe that I am unable to do so and therefore, somehow, the Nazis did not systematically kill millions of people in their death camps. The truth however is that I simply don’t like being told what to do and rather childishly, have been watching with great joy as revisionists claim victory online. I have previously asked, in regards to American execution equipment manufacturer Fred Leuchter, at what point does someone become a con man? Was it when Leuchter deliberately misrepresented himself as a professional engineer, when he sold faulty execution equipment which would cause a nightmarish death, or was it when he convinced holocaust deniers that he was an expert on gas execution? As strange as it sounds, I speculated that Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel, who commisioned Leuchter in the 80s to defend him at his trial for distributing Holocaust denial materia, was a potential victim of his deception. However recent revelations made by another prominent revisionist, Gemar Rudolf, tells a very different story – one where Zünde, Leuchter and a man named Robert Faurisson conspired together to knowingly make false statements under oath with regards to Leuchter’s expertise and the authenticity of the Leuchter Report. However, all their efforts were in vain as, during the trial, the court ruled that he had neither the qualifications nor experience to act as an expert witness with the judge stating that his opinion was of “no greater value than that of an ordinary tourist”. Since the trial, Leuchter has been successfully scamming members of the Holocaust Denial movement out of tens of thousands of dollars unopposed, with many reluctant to defame their sacred cow. Some even went as far as to promote parts of the Leuchter Report they know to be incorrect simply to save face. In a speech to the House of Commons, Churchill paraphrased Santayana when he said “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it”. This phrase has always stuck with me as far too often I have seen people continue to pursue the wrong course of action because they do not take the time to think critically about what has happened in the past. Nowhere is there a better example of this than when the now former President, Gotabaya Rajapaska banned chemical fertilisers and pesticides in Sri Lanka. The result was an economic and humanitarian crisis in which Sri Lanka lost its food security and half a million people were pushed back into poverty. This catastrophic decision was made only 6-years after a similar one in which the Sri Lankan government banned a herbicide on a hunch. The ban of this single herbicide imposed significant economic cost on growers of all operation sizes but disproportionately affected smallholders. It also had a negative impact on income disparity, female farm workers, soil erosion, and public health. The Sri Lankan government ultimately reversed the ban but failed to learn from this cautionary tale of what happens when unsupported hunches rather than objective evidence drive agricultural policy. For decades now, we have been told by NGOs such as Greenpeace, well-meaning but uninformed celebrities like Mark Ruffalo and the threat to global food security herself, Vandana Shiva, that organic farming is more sustainable and produces comparable yields to conventional farming methods. We all, including myself, want this to be true but deep down we all know when we see the premium price tag on organic produce that it’s not. The sad reality is that the organic movement is simply marketing disguised as a grassroots movement relying on, and amplifying, the ignorance of its own consumers. It survives by distorting science and promoting a false narrative that organic food is somehow safer or is more nutritional than conventional foods. That is not to say there is no shortage of problems associated with chemical-intensive large-scale agriculture, but the solution to these problems is not to take us back to the dark ages and for us to ignore all the advancements in technology that have taken so many from the brink of starvation. Yet there are many among us who romanticise archaic food production and yearn to return to a time before synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. The now former Sri Lankan President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has shown us what such a world would look like when he attempted to transition the country’s farmers to organic agriculture. The result was an economic and humanitarian crisis in which Sri Lanka lost its food security and half a million people were pushed back into poverty. This was one of many significant factors leading to widespread protests in Sri Lanka which the Rajapaksa administration attempted to suppress through authoritarian means, imposing curfews, restricting social media, assaulting protesters and journalists and arresting online activists. They were however unsuccessful and at the time of writing this, Rajapaksa fled to Singapore after protesters overran the presidential palace. Sri Lanka’s prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as acting president as the country reels from an economic crisis and unrest.Seven months after forcing its farmers to go organic, the government reversed its decision and was seeking a $700 million USD loan from the World Bank to revive its agricultural sector by providing it with imported agrochemicals following the catastrophe. The British government has recently been investigating the public benefit provided by charities offering complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). They have stated that to remain qualified for charitable status, an organisation must provide evidence that the therapy being offered is capable of delivering the claimed benefits. In the case of Gerson Support Group (GSG), the organisation’s own trustees acknowledged that the evidence around their therapy, and its claims to treat cancer, would now not meet the government’s low bar criteria for registration as a charity. Essentially, the now former charity has publicly stated that they did not operate to benefit the public and have been scamming cancer sufferers with the help of the Charity Commision for decades. The now defunct organisation still in some capacity continues to promote Gerson Therapy to the British public via other questionable charities, after donating a sizable chunk of their assets after their demise. The Charity Commision has failed in its duty to protect the British public from snake-oil-salesmen and has been reluctant in investigating fraudulent organisations it awarded charitable statues to. Although the Gerson Support Group no longer exists, its downfall was not due to the Charity Commision actively investigating pseudo-medical organizations it unintentionally promotes, and somewhat sustains via tax breaks. The draconian rules are designed to extract as much money as possible from dying people by conning them into buying expensive pointless equipment or spending their life savings visiting an elaborate smoothie bar in Mexico. It is designed to give fraudulent data regarding their success rates by purposefully not following upon patients after leaving the clinics. And it is designed for people to struggle so when they inevitably fail they can be blamed for their death. This is a generational scam where descendants of Max Gerson have targeted the people at their most vulnerable. After decades of negative attention from the medical and scientific community the Gerson family know that their “cure” kills but they don’t care. Fred Leuchter is an American manufacturer of execution equipment and prominent Holocaust denier who is best known as the author of the Leuchter report, a pseudoscientific document that alleges there were no gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau. To reach this conclusion, Leuchter tested for cyanide residue using a type of analysis which was not appropriate for producing accurate results on samples he collected in an uncontrolled manner. Normally I would say that people like him design experiments to get the results they wanted, but I believe he was so incompetent that he unwittingly stacked the deck in his favour. His methods were in fact so flawed that even fellow Holocaust deniers have been critical of his findings, yet still to this day he vehemently defends is work. As someone who has been so vocal in their criticism of Holocaust denial and in particular of the Leuchter Report, it was only a matter of time before I drew his attention and scorn.
