TikTok Quacks Trust Me, I’m an Unlicensed Veterinarian

080623 “Alternative medicine” is a pernicious misnomer whose advocates purposely deceive the vulnerable into believing that their “treatments” are natural and more effective, or safer, than conventional ones. The fact that we live in a world where virtually the entirety of mankind’s knowledge can be accessed by a device we carry in a pocket, yet the use of alternative medicine is on the rise, is a testament to how pervasive quackery is in our society. The industry has become so lucrative that it has spawned its own cottage industry made from its own victims fighting it out online to see who can promote the most bizarre cure-all tonic. Social media has helped supercharge these narcissists with the video-sharing, cringe-inducing TikTok now on the frontline of this new wave of misinformation. Recently I stumbled upon a video of an unlicensed vet promoting a dog-dewormer as a cancer cure. Like with Black Salve, Turpentine Therapy, and Laetrile there is a nugget of truth to this nonsense, but, for the love of all that is holy, do not take your fur-babies’ gastrointestinal parasite medication.
