"My father told me when I was a little boy that people in authority lie and the job in a democracy is to remain skeptical. I've been science-based since I was a kid. Show me the evidence and I'll believe you, but I'm not going to take the word of official narratives," he explained.

The United States is a constitutional republic, not a democracy. The Founding Fathers ratified the U.S. Constitution to form a more perfect union, protect individual rights, and prevent the tyranny of democracy. The word "democracy" is not found in the Declaration of Independence nor in the Constitution. The Constitution was meant to foster a complex form of majority rule, not enable minority rule. The goal of government by the people, including both a democracy and a republic, was understood when the Constitution was drafted and ratified. Power is not found in mere majorities, but in carefully balanced power. The goal is freedom, prosperity, and human flourishing.

While dismissed by detractors for peddling positions they say are unsubstantiated, Kennedy has used his anti-authority stance to win a post-COVID, post-Trump following that has seen him polling 20 percent against Biden among Democrats.

That makes him a very long shot at becoming the Democratic nominee, but has raised worries among some Biden supporters that he could damage the 80-year-old 46th president enough to give a Republican a better chance of victory.

The father he refers to was none other than Robert F. Kennedy, known as Bobby, a former attorney general who was assassinated in 1968 while running for president. His uncle, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 in a shooting that spawned any number of conspiracy theories about who might have been involved.

When it comes to authority figures he has ever trusted, Kennedy Jr., 69, said he included his father as well as uncles John Kennedy and Sargent Shriver plus grandmother Rose Kennedy and his family priest. He adds his wife, Cheryl Hines, to the list too. Among institutions he trusts are the US Post Office, US Coast Guard, Navy SEALS and Green Berets. "And I trust the FAA every time I board a plane," he said.

Jewish groups condemned the remarks as anti-Semitic.

To support that argument, for which there is no hard evidence that anyone is developing such weapons, he cited a slew of media reports, including Chinese accusations — dismissed by U.S. authorities — that America is making race-specific bioweapons.

The handling of COVID is central to Kennedy's platform. He is among those who did not believe in government-imposed lockdowns or in masks to bring the virus under control. Kennedy also opposed mandated vaccines and raises questions over their safety.

"I'm not scared of a germ," he adds. "What scares me is my children growing up in an America where they don't have Constitutional rights."

Guidance on the use and effectiveness of vaccines did change over time, as did advice on the effectiveness of masks—changes that scientists generally put down to dealing with a previously unknown disease and a completely new type of vaccine.

But Kennedy argues that reporters, as well as former chief medical advisor Anthony Fauci and other officials, should have at least expressed skepticism earlier on, when it became clear that vaccines did not completely stop the spread of the virus.

"I would like to see a trial," Kennedy said of Fauci. He said Fauci had been obligated to use the best data in making decisions and he did not believe that he had done so. Fauci has not been accused of breaking the law by any U.S. enforcement agency. Newsweek contacted Fauci for comment.

Kennedy's candidacy seems to be premised on "appealing to Democrats frustrated by Biden and dissatisfaction with how COVID was handled," said Robert Shapiro, a political science professor at Columbia University, suggesting that it could be significant for the president if Kennedy does well in the New Hampshire primary.

"Being challenged like that can weaken an incumbent president," he said.

Vaccines are a particularly emotive subject for Kennedy. Asking him about anti-vaccine activism is the one thing that stops him in his tracks on the way up the mountain.

"I've never been anti-vaccine. I'm pro-science," he says. Kennedy said one of his catalysts for involvement in vaccines was a woman who provided him with a stack of research about a supposed relationship between autism and vaccines in 2005.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says vaccines do not cause autism, a vaccine court set up under a no-fault system awarded the woman, Minneapolis psychiatrist Sarah Bridges, $20 million for costs associated with caring for her son, who is autistic and suffers from seizures.

Kennedy also speculates over a possible link between vaccines and his strained voice, caused by spasmodic dystonia he got when he was 42.

"Three years ago when preparing a complaint against the flu-shot companies, I found out that many of the flu shots list this disease as a side effect, and at that point I was getting a flu shot every year," he said.

RFK offered up access to hundreds of studies about the alleged side effects of vaccines, including the ones administered for COVID.

The CDC describes COVID vaccines as "safe and effective" after more than 600 million doses were given to Americans, noting that serious safety problems are rare. A 2021 study for instance found rates of vaccine-related myocarditis—a condition often highlighted by COVID vaccine opponents—at around one in 120,000, though its frequency rose in young men after vaccination.

Kennedy is regularly criticized from the left as a DINO, a Democrat in Name Only. As well as his views on COVID, he's in favor of sealing the southern border; he's against allowing trans women to compete against female athletes and he's anti-war—including war in Ukraine.

"Some Democrats like him because he is a Kennedy," notes John Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College. "As more have learned about who he is and what he stands for, his Democratic support has edged downward."

Kennedy responds to criticism of his positions with the argument that he is a proponent of free speech, accusing the Biden administration of orchestrating censorship—again in part over COVID.

Indeed, U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty recently issued a preliminary injunction barring federal agencies and officials from contacting social media firms for the purpose of discouraging speech, and the alleged censorship of Kennedy is mentioned three times in the judge's written opinion. The Biden administration is appealing the decision and did not respond to a request for comment on Kennedy's accusations.

"The last liberal"
"I'm the last liberal. A JFK, RFK, FDR liberal. I'm for middle-class labor, the environment, anti-war, anti-corporatist takeover of government agencies, anti-subversion of democracy without redress, and protection of minorities," Kennedy said.

"Real liberals don't censor, and he (Biden) has been promoting censorship from the White House. He's been working with social-media companies to silence his critics, including me," he said, accusing social-media companies of continuing to censor him.

"YouTube took down three videos this week. They took down my pre-announcement speech where I first said I'm thinking of running for president. They take down stuff of mine every day. Some of it is related to the war in Ukraine," he said.

"Some reporters call it a conspiracy theory that the government censored me, or even that I've been censored at all."

YouTube and parent company Alphabet did not respond to Newsweek's request for comment, but YouTube said in mid-June it took down a video of Kennedy speaking with podcaster Jordan Peterson because it violated its vaccine misinformation policy.

Kennedy reels off the list of rights he believes have come under assault, particularly since the government imposed extraordinary measures during COVID.

"Freedom of speech; though it's harder to censor me now that I'm running for president. Freedom of worship; they closed churches for a year. Freedom of assembly; they created social distancing. Private property rights; they closed 3.3 million businesses without due process or just compensation. They also shut down the Seventh Amendment right to jury trials," he said.

Only the Second Amendment, on the right to keep and bear arms, wasn't attacked he said, adding, "People who love the Second Amendment think that it is because of the Second Amendment that the Second Amendment wasn't attacked during COVID."

Kennedy is nonetheless aligned with the left in his belief that student college loans ought to be forgiven and that the U.S. Supreme Court should not have overturned affirmative action for college admissions.

Also, he calls for free rehab for drug users—bridling when asked how that would have helped given his own addiction to drugs, mostly heroin, for 13 years from the age of 15, shortly after his dad was killed.

"I was the one with the drug problem. I know what works and what doesn't," he says.

Kennedy is anti-death penalty too, following a traditionally Democrat position. And he believes Sirhan Sirhan, the 79-year-old man serving a life sentence for killing his father, ought to be released, whether or not he's guilty as a "frail old man who has no memory of what happened that day".

For the record, though, Kennedy also doesn't believe Sirhan fired the fatal shot as the court found. Kennedy says that his view is based with interviews with all those involved and on ballistic evidence. Others reject it as yet another conspiracy theory.

Kennedy acknowledges that his safety is always a concern given his family history, but no security tags along on the mountain hike. He says he'll soon be getting Secret Service protection, which is typically offered to presidential candidates after 30 days of polling at 15 percent or more.

It's not the first time a reporter has hiked with Kennedy. He notes that one made a big deal about his van lacking functioning seatbelts. He explained why in an online video viewed millions of times. Spoiler alert: It's because his dog Attila, now in heat, chews through them.

Attila is along for the walk, getting a little aggressive with one woman's pooch. Another man angrily exclaims to Kennedy: "You're too far from your dogs."

"He's right," says Kennedy. "That dog is crazy."

Standing by Kennedy's side in his campaign is his actress wife Hines, who is best known for her role as Larry David's ex-wife in Curb Your Enthusiasm. She told Newsweek that few in famously liberal Hollywood openly express support for Kennedy's candidacy even if some do behind the scenes.

Democrat Dennis Kucinich, who contested party primaries in 2004 and 2008 without coming close to winning, is campaign manager for Kennedy and told Newsweek: "I've known President Biden for 50 years. Nothing against him, but America needs a new direction, in the world and at home."

That new direction begins by not shutting down debate, including in the media, Kennedy said. "The press is never fair," he said. "But I don't want to sound like a victim."

The narrative begins with the USA Robber Barons of the late 19th Century describing a carving up of USA industry between cooperating and competing families. The formation of the Federal Reserve and the establishment of the Income Tax get no coverage, and WWI also gets little mention. The story then focuses on USA and European industrial support for the National Socialist forces in German under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. These points are based on well established history, though perhaps overemphasized in places. A failing of the documentary in this early section is repeated mention of "The Illuminati" without defining what is meant by this group.

The documentary points towards a loose and coordinated coalition of European royal houses, European investment bankers and their counterparts in families and investment bankers in the USA. Specific names and dates are related to allow a viewer to follow up on points being made. The Dulles brother's roles in the Treaty of Versailles and later as head of the CIA and Secretary of State receive mention. Major General Smedley Butler of the US Marine Corp is mentioned as exposing a fascist plot to attempt to implement a military coup d'etat in the USA during the 1930's. Following the defeat of Nazi Germany, brief mention is made of Gehlen, the Nazi counter-intelligence leader and his then continued role in post war Germany. Operation Paperclip, the project to transfer German rocket engineers to the USA, is also mentioned.

The documentary then moves to focus on the assassination of JFK. The web of connections between USA Mafia bosses and the CIA is examined. The highly profitable international drugs trade facilitated by the CIA is also highlighted. The film focuses on Afghanistan/Pakistan and fails to mention to the Golden Triangle used by the CIA during the Vietnam war. Then, an exorbitant amount of effort is placed into documenting the research performed by independent researchers into the JFK assassination.

Following this temporally dominant component of the documentary it fails to engage the other topic in its title, that of the 9/11 events. The latter part of the documentary descends into generalizations attempting to form some unified theme which connects the documentary. It provides advice for persons to resist the players its has identified as running national and international institutions of power.

The documentary provides a useful introduction to some elements of the networks of power which cross the USA and European spheres from the late 19th Century to the late 20th. Some important elements are given only brief mention or entirely omitted. An example of omission would be the breaking of the Japanese diplomatic cypher, the "purple code", which provided the USA with advanced warning of the attack on Pearl Harbor which generated the outrage necessary to involve the USA officially in WWII.

The documentary's focus on the JFK assassination is appropriate; its in the title. This dedication does minimize its ability to examine other topics. The documentary fails totally to justify the term "9/11" in its title. It implies that World Trade Center buildings 1 and 2 were loaded with explosives for demolition in a single day, which is ludicrous. The buildings were demolished with explosives, but you can't load the buildings in a single day.

I give the documentary a middling score. It raises some well documented and important facts, though glances over others which could have added to its narrative. The work on the JFK assassination is its strength. Sadly, it does not consider the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which I consider a related assassination. The last phase of the film is full of generalizations and lack of detail. It loses it way. Nonetheless, it does achieve many of its objectives, notably the relationship between many influential USA families, the decedents of the Robber Barons, and Nazism. Similarly, the JFK assassination was a complete cock up by a combination of the CIA and its Mafia partners on behalf of a ruling class that were threatened with losing exorbitant profits if JFK smashed the CIA into a thousand pieces and ended the Vietnam and Cold Wars. The film succeeds in documenting these narratives.

If you really want to get to the bottom of the Kennedy assassination conspiracy, watch the 3.5 hour blockbuster, JFK to 911: Everything is a Rich Man’s Trick. I found it at once disturbing, enlightening, revolutionary, and full of common sense.

It traces the history of the Dulleses who wrote the Treaty of Versailles; and the Bushes who played a hand in Hitler’s rise, JFK’s murder, and the WTC collapse. The film doesn’t shy away from the Mafia connection with the CIA, so obvious in the Kennedy plot, the Bay of Pigs, and Iran–Contra. We begin to see the US military, with its endless wars in Central America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, as an enforcement arm of the corporations.

We begin to appreciate the pervasive influence of the propaganda machine, and of the permanent war economy it serves. Wealth is siphoned upward so the rich can retain their status as having more than the rest — while the rest are always having to support the war machine. Thus the public are given false enemies time and again, as the only rationale they can buy for continuing the status quo. Meanwhile we are unconsciously consuming and being entertained, buying into the old Caesar’s trick of bread and circuses. And we are subject to increasing surveillance and censorship, again under the guise of protection from enemies… because ironically the population itself is the real enemy of the ruling elite.

The military is ultimately, we see now, a policing mechanism, used everywhere to protect or seize for the interests of the rich, at the expense of the poor. And the solution, according to the film’s conclusion, is “revolution.” Not of the bloody Bolshevik variety, of course, which so horrified the bluebloods of the early twentieth century. In that case the Leninists simply created a new class of wealthy elite, bureaucrats, nouveau riche. Rather, the brand of revolution this film advocates is the peaceful variety.

We are enjoined by the British narrator/producer to “march on Washington” in the style of Martin Luther King or the short-lived Occupy movement. But under what leadership now, to stand vulnerable to the weaponry of the establishment? It’s a stretch to envision a sustained popular uprising, with everyone either unable to get time off work; or overwhelmed by the enormity of the systemic corruption; or in denial about the genocidal American dream and the latest fake “enemy”; or afraid of surveillance and prison and violent repression, if they raise a finger or a whimper.

In this film the onus is put archly upon the American character itself, so prone to violence and gangsterism. I detect a latent British resentment of the wild roughshod American style, so impolite… but let’s not blame the messenger. Let’s own the guilt of complicity, as the dirty work of the century has been carried out in our name. Revolution in whatever form — street action or consciousness — results when, given all the information, we agree to take responsibility for our political fate.

The United States of America’s Doll House: A Vast Tapestry of Lies and Illusions
While truth-tellers Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning sit inside jail cells and Edward Snowden lives in exile in Russia, the American people hole up in an illusionary dwelling constructed to reduce them to children afraid of the truth. Or is it the dark? This is not new; it has been so for a very long time, but it has become a more sophisticated haunted doll’s house, an electronic one with many bells and whistles and images that move faster than the eye can see. We now inhabit a digital technological nightmare controlled by government and corporate forces intent on dominating every aspect of people’s lives. This is true despite the valiant efforts of dissidents to use the technology for human liberation. The old wooden doll houses, where you needed small fingers to rearrange the furniture, now only need thumbs that can click you into your cell’s fantasy world. So many dwell there in the fabricated reality otherwise known as propaganda. The result is mass hallucination.

In a 1969 interview, Jim Garrison, the District Attorney of New Orleans and the only person to ever bring to trial a case involving the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, said that as a result of the CIA’s murderous coup d’état on behalf of the military-industrial-financial-media-intelligence complex that rules the country to this day, the American people have been subjected to a fabricated reality that has rendered them a nation of passive Eichmanns, who sit in their living rooms, popping pills and watching television as their country’s military machine mows down people by the millions and the announcers tell them all the things they should be afraid of, such as bacteria on cutting boards and Russian spies infiltrating their hair salons. Garrison said:

The creation of such inanities as acceptable reality and unacceptable reality is necessary for the self-preservation of the super-state against its greatest danger: understanding on the part of the people as to what is really happening. All factors which contribute to its burgeoning power are exaggerated. All factors which might reveal its corrosive effect on the nation are concealed. The result is to place the populace in the position of persons living in a house whose windows no longer reveal the outside but on which murals have been painted. Some of the murals are frightening and have the effect of reminding the occupants of the outside menaces against which the paternal war machine is protecting them. Other murals are pleasant to remind them how nice things are inside the house.

But to live like this is to live in a doll’s house. If life has one lesson to teach us, it is that to live in illusion is ultimately disastrous.

In the doll’s house into which America gradually has been converted, a great many of our basic assumptions are totally illusory. [i]

Fifty years have disappeared behind us since the eloquent and courageous Garrison (read On the Trail of the Assassins) metaphorically voiced the truth, despite the CIA’s persistent efforts to paint him as an unhinged lunatic through its media mouthpieces. These days they would probably just lock him up or send him fleeing across borders, as with Assange, Manning, and Snowden.

It is stunning to take a cue from his comment regarding the JFK assassination, when he suggested that one reverse the lone assassin scenario and place it in the U.S.S.R. No American could possibly believe a tale that a former Russian soldier, trained in English and having served at a top Soviet secret military base, who had defected to the U.S. and then returned home with the help of the K.G.B., could kill the Russian Premier with a defective and shoddy rifle and then be shot to death in police headquarters in Moscow by a K.G.B. connected hit man so there would be no trial and the K.G.B. would go scot free. That would be a howler! So too, of course, are the Warren Commission’s fictions about Oswald.

But even though a majority of Americans have never believed the government’s explanation for JFK’s murder, they nevertheless have insouciantly gone to sleep for half a century in the doll’s house of illusions as the killing and the lies of their own government have increased over the years and any semblance of a democratic and peaceful America has gone extinct. The fates of courageous whistle-blowers Assange, Manning, and Snowden don’t concern them. The fates of Hondurans don’t concern them. The fates of Syrians don’t concern them. The fates of Iraqis, Afghans, Yemenis, Palestinians don’t concern them. The fates of America’s victims all around the world don’t concern them. Indifference reigns.

Obviously, if you are reading this, you are not one of the sleepwalkers and are awake to the parade of endless lies and illusions and do care. But you are in a minority.

That is not the case for most Americans. When approximately 129 million people cast their votes for Donald Trump and HilIary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, you know idiocy reigns and nothing has been learned. Ditto for the votes for Obama, Bush, Clinton, et al. You can keep counting back. It is an ugly fact and sad to say. Such a repetition compulsion is a sign of a deep sickness, and it will no doubt be repeated in the 2020 election. The systemic illusion must be preserved at all costs and the warfare state supported in its killing. It is the American way.

It is true that average Americans have not built the doll’s house; that is the handiwork of the vast interconnected and far-reaching propaganda arms of the U.S. government and their media accomplices. But that does not render them innocent for accepting decades of fabricated reality for so-called peace of mind by believing that a totally corrupt system works. The will to believe is very powerful, as is the propaganda. The lesson that Garrison spoke of has been lost on far too many people, even on those who occasionally leave the doll house for a walk, but who only go slightly down the path for fear of seeing too much reality and connecting too many dots. There is plain ignorance, then there is culpable ignorance, to which I shall return.

Denying Existential Freedom

One of the first things an authoritarian governing elite must do is to convince people that they are not free. This has been going on for at least forty years, ever since the Church Committee’s revelations about the CIA in the mid-seventies, including its mind-control program, MKULTRA. Everyone was appalled at the epiphany, so a different tactic was added.
