Should I learn Salsa and Bachata at the same time?
Should I learn Salsa and Bachata at the same time?
I recommend it. In my experience people who often wait too long to start learning the other dance at the social often end up not learning it and just sitting on the sidelines when all the other songs play.
It may be slightly more overwhelming at the beginning, but not too much and your brain will adjust quickly. I had two left feet when I started dancing, and while I did struggle a bit initially I am now super grateful that I stuck with both dances from the beginning.
Salsa and Bachata are pretty much played at each other’s respective socials now. And even when you eventually go to congresses, they’ll most likely have both Salsa and Bachata. If your scene is large enough you may find socials that only do specific dances but most likely your scene is smaller and they will play everything.
One thing that helps, a ton of bachata moves translate pretty easily to salsa.
The more dances you learn, the better a dancer you’ll become. It’s like learning new dialects in a chosen language.
So I highly recommend you learn both at the same time. Especially because you can take a break from one and practice the other. I would say that they also enhance each other by doing them together. Your sense of musicality and your instincts to move your body and have good frame will be greatly improved with salsa. And that will carry into bachata and vice versa.
But I want to add that specifically for leads: In the beginner stage you may become frustrated. Trying to learn two dances can be difficult. I’ve seen many guys stop after one year of not learning fast enough. I wouldn’t take it lightly: learning to lead properly can be pretty rough the first year. So please keep this in mind when you become frustrated. It is just apart of the learning process.

Eu recomendo vivamente ir a festivais.

Can you forget how to dance if you take a break?
Can you forget how to dance if you take a break?
If they take a break, stop dancing for the next year, will they forget everything they learned?
Initially, it depends on how long you have been dancing.
6 months or less of training and you will probably forget most of the moves you learned. You probably will not forget things like how to step on the beat, your basic step, or the basic technique.
So yes, you will forget parts of it. Not everything of course. You will learn faster when you return, though, as things you already knew once, come back quicker.
I think it could be safe to assume that most skills are like riding a bike. You do not completely forget how, you might forget the routines or specific patterns. But they should come back after a couple of dances.
If you are unable to dance for an extended amount of time, it does not have to be all or nothing. I do not advocate for skipping all socials/classes and forgetting about it, but do what's possible for you, and just also practice a bit on your own and listen to the music. Going to classes, or socials, or doing some practice at home from time will help. The more the better of course, but even just once a month will help.

How to develop more natural body movement
How to develop more natural body movement?
This Lead, has been dancing Salsa for the past 8 months and he feels that His body movement is still very robotic
The non-glamorous answer is 'practice'. Of course, being systematic about it will help and prevent you from spinning your wheels.
Start with your basic as your baseline. Meanwhile, practice various body isolations, namely shoulders, rib cage and hips. Then build on your basic.
Add on shoulders, then rib cage, hips, etc...
If you try to do too much at once, your body won't be able to coordinate, which is why I suggest adding in one body isolation at a time. Eventually your body will get used to the new movement and muscle memory will slowly kick in.
Body movement practice takes a lot of time, so be patient with it. Doing this practice daily will guarantee results. Even better if you started recording yourself for even more progress and humility.
You can of course record yourself with a partner. But I suggest also recording yourself dancing solo since your focus will be more on your body movement and less on trying to be a good lead/follow for your partner. Freeing up your headspace to concentrate on your own movement is the idea.
In my opinion, become less robotic just comes with time and practice. As you become more familiar and accustomed to dancing. Your body will automatically pick up the social cues, of things you like.
Meaning when you see a lead who you admire, you will automatically notice the things you feel you are lacking. If he is fluid in motion, you will notice what he does, and you will attempt to implement those things into your repertoire.
People underestimate the importance of practicing your basic, all salsa moves stem from a strong foundation of a basic. Many people think "practice makes perfect" is a good motto but realistically "practice makes permanent". Nobody will practice with perfect form at the start, but the idea is that to improve you need feedback. Doing the same thing over and over without feedback can create bad habits.
This is why I advocate attending body movement specific workshops and classes at monthly socials or at festivals and congresses. Or you can take shines/footwork classes, regardless of the level and just focus on shoulders, hips, etc... Whatever you want to improve. This will give you the opportunity to have feedback from an instructor. Or also take private classes; there is no better way to improve.

Should I Lead or Follow?
Should I Lead or Follow?
Generally speaking, men are the leaders and women are the followers. But this is 2022 and times are changing.
Too Long; Didn’t Watch : it is your choice, choose whatever role you want and become good at it !!!
If you can, learn to lead and follow, but this would be hard, especially beyond the basics. some of the best dancers I've danced with are tremendously good at both leading and following. if you want to get better quickly, or compete or get experience quickly, do both! Knowing both roles helps immensely in learning, and you can always do one more than the other.
As a lead, knowing how it feels gives you a better sense of how to guide a partner in a kind way. As a follow, learning how to lead can make you more aware of having an active role without back leading, and not being a wet noodle. Learning both ways give you lots of self awareness, enable you to dance with anyone at a dance party, b) improve your communication with your dance partner, and c) improve your own dancing
And Like I said if you go somewhere and there is not enough follows or leads, you get to dance anyway because you can do both.

Partner Dancing during pregnancy?
Partner Dances during pregnancy?
This couple absolutely loves bachata but the wife is experiencing heavy early trimester pregnancy symptoms (out of breath, fatigue and tiredness, nauseous, belly cramp, discomfort, etc.)
They were curious if anyone could give them any advice on dancing bachata during pregnancy?
Or does anyone have experience with this first hand?
What do you guys think about their situation?
I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. I just wanted to post this video to start a conversation. Maybe somebody else in the future is going through this same issue, and this could be a great opportunity to share ideas.
I'd suggest talking about it to your doctor, and not doing too many body rolls! But besides that, in my non-medical opinion, i don't see how dancing can be any different than a brisk walk!
The lady who actually posted this question actually responded back saying that she had actually asked her doctor and she was told to wait until the second trimester.
Now obviously this advice does not apply to everyone, but maybe you can use this as a general guideline. But of course, definitely speak to your medical professional.

Is it too late to start dancing?
Is it too late to start social dancing? #Salsa #Kizomba #Bachata Brazilian #Zouk
If you have to ask this question then, The answer is of course, Yes !
If you did not shoot out your mothers womb doing a two step, you are destined to fail.
If you have not taken at least 12 years of ballet by the age of 14, GIVE UP NOW !!
If the idea of performing in front of a crowd of people makes your stomach queasy, Don’t quit your day job bub.
If you’ve ever had to youtube dance lessons, you may as well go cry in a corner because You are lost.
If you have not won 3 international dance competitions by the age of 21, you need to find a new hobby !
If you have not taught and instructed at least 5 world renown dancers, Don’t waste my time.
Simultaneously if you have not dedicated the past 30 years of your life, spent at least $100,000 in personal training, sacrificed your second born to the late great Shirley Temple or Michael Jackson. You do not have what it takes.
Dancing is not a sport for the weak willed or ill hearted, It takes dedication and determination. And by you asking that question just shows, you’re better off doing crochet.
People like you make me sick, scum of the earth. Think you can just pick up a new hobby whenever you feel like it. Pfffffft. Ill have you know, in my mothers womb, I was already practicing my basic step.
By 3 months old, I was teaching Salsa choreographies to Eddie Torres.
By 12 months, I had traveled the globe and brought Bachata to Middle Earth.
By 2 years old, I had already opened up a Kizomba Academy for the Blind.
The following year, I led a 7 person team across Brasil. Where I taught the locals the wonderful style of Brazilian Zouk.
If 👏 you 👏 resume 👏 does 👏 not 👏 compare 👏 go 👏 back 👏 to 👏 bed.
By 8 years old, Time Magazine had already named me the most important toddler EVER. The story was quickly shelved, due to the Kizomba Academy for the Blind having too many casualties. I definitely should have built a guard rail on that rooftop. But that is beside the point!
If you do not have a podcast where you interview the most amazing dancers on this planet, you should be ashamed 😉
If they have not built a statue of you that also serves as a religious holy site, why would you even bother to start?
If my point has not been made by now, then let me sum this up for you.
If you are not the great descendant of the Greek God Apollo, then this just is not going to work out.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talks.
