Street Dancing vs School Taught Dancing.
Street Dancing vs School Taught Dancing.
This person went to South America, and they were unable to dance with the local dancers.
I believe this person encountered bar dancing. It just happens that instead of "western" pop music they are playing salsa and other latin music. Which is their pop music.
In a lot of cultures, people were taught how to dance while growing up with their families, so formal dancing is not common for most. They were probably encouraged to dance and Certainly they have lots of examples to watch but the quality of the examples has a big impact on their dancing skill. most other places in the world learn to dance growing up more than we do in the US, but that doesn't mean it's formalized and structured.
In the US at least, a lot of people are Taught how to Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, Brazilian Zouk dance from Schools. So there is a structured guideline, you could almost think of it like a language.
You could call it structured vs unstructured Dancing or even instructed vs uninstructed dancing.
There is definitely a difference between those who learned to dance in a studio vs. those who learned at home/through family, Casual Dancing.
In South America, The average girl you meet at a bar, club or in a casual dance setting is probably not going to understand linear salsa. It’s not a style of dance that’s intuitive to someone with zero experience with it. If you want utilize the linear lessons you learned, find socials at a dance studio or go to festivals. There are plenty in major cities no matter what country you are in.
If you like causal bar or club settings, learn some basic Cuban salsa, Cumbia, and bachata and work on connection. Some dancers find studio dancing intimidating.

I forget everything when I'm social dancing.
I forget everything when I'm social dancing.
This is a leader, dances 2-3x week. Socials once a month or once every two months.
relax and have your focus on enjoying the dance. your expectations for yourself are way off. You expect to dance all these intermediate level moves without actually having practiced much.
As you probably noticed, knowing so many moves does not help you that much. You need to actually practice them, combine them with other moves and also select them fitting to the music.
It's actually really hard to practice any new moves in a social setting if you are a beginner. Your brain will not be able to follow the music properly and you will miss out on a lot of enjoyment you could have if you were more in the moment.
Your follow also is not looking for all the moves that you have in your arsenal, they are there to enjoy the dance. Work on your connection with your follow. Everybody dances a little bit different and if you get a proper feel for each other first (and relax), everything will be way easier
Before going to a Social: watch videos of your past classes and practice them a little bit by yourself
You need to go to way more parties and socials. Immerse yourself.
Dance with beginners/followers around your level or what you can do right now. Less pressure
Leave your comfort zone from time to time and dance above your level. Maybe also with pros
If you Instructor teaches a pattern, You are not going to remember all of it. Instead try and remember a certain portion of that pattern that you like, and practice that ! try to remember the hand position, where my follow is supposed to be and what count, etc. And then I just keep on perfecting. Unless you have a photographic memory, if you try to remember everything you learn, it will be impossible! Break it into smaller chunks and then work on perfecting those!
A lot of beginners are so focused on what other people may think of them. But let me ask you this: what makes you so special that everybody is focused on you? try and be more present and dance to the best of your ability without putting pressure on yourself. When your brain is more relaxed, you will remember more moves and it will flow more smoothly. If you make a "mistake", laugh about it with your partner. Don't take yourself too seriously.
Try to aim for:
1 Hour of class =
1 Hour of practice =
1 Hour of social dancing =
Remember In social dancing, people are just there to have fun. Nobody cares if you do a move wrong (unless you hurt them), if your vibe is about enjoying yourself, you and your partner will have a good time.

Can you become a decent dancer if you’re inflexible?
Can you still become a decent dancer if you’re very inflexible?
biggest concern and hesitation is my lack of flexibility through my hamstrings. They’ve always been extremely tight.
Is it still worth taking dance classes? Or will I just end up discouraged and frustrated?
Work on your flexibility like it is your job. Lack of flexibility really inhibits dance range of motion and range, variety. Of course you can be a dope dancer with a limited range but to take it to the next level you need to be flexible, strong, have endurance to really have full access to your vocabulary.
It takes practice. Have you tried to do yoga? I did yoga to improve my flexibility for dance. Does your dance teacher do warm ups at the start of your class? That is important too. My dance instructor would make the class to do stretch exercises twice a week instead of doing dance. It felt like a yoga class.
I want to add that you should Dance for the way it makes you feel, for the happiness and enjoyment of it, for the satisfaction of personal improvement and growth as your skill and artistry improves, not for the desire to have a viral youtube video, to be someone else, or just to pursue commercial interests.
Manage your expectations. Depending on your age, experience, body, and ability to practice (time + instruction + effort), you may be able obtain similar levels of ability to great dancers. Get rid of any defined outcome you are expecting from the dance class. If you spend money, invest time, and put yourself through this experience (that has now become a chore) for the sole purpose of achieving a unrealistic and imagined specific outcome then it would absolutely leave you discouraged and frustrated. At that point it also ceases to be about dancing.
So it comes down to why you want to take classes. If dance truly makes you happy and you want to improve for the sake of your improvement and passion for the activity of dancing or to be a better instructor then you should absolutely sign up

Explaining to non-dancers the sensual aspect of Social Dancing
Explaining to non-dancers the sensual aspect of dancing.
I think it’s like acting in a play or being in a music video. It is a game people play that has many benefits such as developing social skills, self-expression and an antidote to loneliness.
In some situations It’s practice for the real thing. In other cases they are not acting.
For Sensual Bachata understand that bachata was invented in a brothel and was considered vulgar for a couple decades. Call it what it is. A sexual dance that your good at, and have learned to see as more then just a dance. You have made it a skill.
For a lot of people social dancing looks sexual to them because they have been brainwashed by pop culture to be over-sexualized, to think and see things in that way.
Social Dancers are able to Convey Sexiness. What I mean is that:
Sensual Dancers are able to make the dance extra sexy as a 'performance' without necessarily having to be aroused, because they understand how to convey this impression voluntarily, on command. A good example of that: Strippers are very good at conveying sexiness without actually being aroused or in the mood.

Advice for new dance Teachers.
Advice for new dance instructors.
Make sure you talk with the student about goals and expectations, and prepare your class to meet those.
Never be afraid to ask a more expiriences teacher for some feed back on your ideas.
Private classes can be very intense, make sure you have a good eye on your students condition.
It's a learning experience for both of you, so cut yourself some slack if a class doesn't quiet go as you planned it. ...and most important: have fun!!!:)
please be patient with your students
be over prepared, but not concerned with getting through everything. You will be surprised at the amount of time it takes to teach things, sometime way less time than you expect and sometime way more time.
No matter the level of my student run them through the basics in the first class. Sometimes you will find a hole in their knowledge or ability of basics that can effect their learning later if you don't adress it early
Have fun. You will have bad classes, and that's ok, no one is perfect.
Teaching adults is different from teaching children. Children are sponges and in the moment, so they pick up very quickly. You mainly have to keep things simple and moving to maintain their attention. But adults (even young adults) carry a lot of baggage that gets in the way of learning: perfectionism, being their own worst critic, etc. So if you are teaching adults, remind them to enjoy the process and have fun.
Among beginner, intermediate and advanced students, the intermediate ones tend to think they know everything! This happens at any level really, but I’ve found this usually with intermediates. They don’t know what they don’t know, or how much they should learn about history, legends and masters, theory, music, even how dance was affected politically. Be patient and encourage them to do research beyond what the school teaches so that they have context of the art and why it’s relevant to them.
There’s no getting around it: you’re bound to have a student who gets frustrated, throws a tantrum, gets cocky or is easily discouraged. They will test your patience! But a good teacher understands how to use these moments as learning tools.
One thing I did was journal my own progress as a teacher. How did I react to this situation? Did I teach that too quickly? Should I slow it down or have them figure it out? What progress did they make that I’m proud of them for? Stuff like that. It helped to keep me grounded and remind me of why I was doing what I was doing.

How to create a Dance choreography?
How to create a choreography?
what goes into designing a choreo, and what is a good way to developing the skills necessary to do so?
First I would like to start out by saying an experienced coach can be found online. An experienced coach who would be able to create a choreo for you solo or a dance team. Until you feel it, just buy a choreo and they will teach it to you. the more moves you learn, the easier for the next choreo to learn and then adapt for your own.
For a solo choreo you will need A repertoire of shines and musicality
Get a song that inspires you and which you want to perform to. Analyze it: breaks, interesting rhythms, different moods in different sections. Then figure out what you want to do for those and then fill in the blanks.
How you probably should start is get a song and then just figure out shines for 4-8 bars of it. Then grow from there.
Then when you want to make it really good you start to think about the stage and directions and moving around it.
Watch performers and analyze them. From beginner group choreos to the masters.

Do you like dancing with people who aren't as skilled?
Do you like dancing with people who aren't as skilled?
Beginner wants to know how more experienced dancers feel about dancing with less experienced dancers.
The key thing to remember is social dances are meant to be FUN. beginners can be very fun to dance with because their happiness is contagious.
A nice, genuine person who is there to have fun will always be fun to dance with. Usually it’s the shitty people with shitty skills who are the worst. When I was the worst on the dance floor, I tried to smile a lot, not take myself seriously, and just try to listen to the follow I was dancing with.
Nice people are fun to dance with at any skill level. Nice people also don’t mind dancing with beginners.
You should Aim to be the beginners best dance of the night. Put a smile on their face.
Followers, understand that it can be super intimidating for a beginner lead to ask an experienced follower to dance.
everyone loves dancing with experienced dancers, but each of those experienced dancers were also beginners at one point. So always give beginners support and encouragement, give them the motivation to keep learning and growing to become those fancy leads and follows y'all love to dance with and watch so much!
I enjoy dancing with complete beginners or inexperienced follows because I view it as a test of my leading skills. It's also a chance for me to concentrate on the basics.
Me being complety honest, as a more experienced lead. Dancing with a beginner makes me feel like superman. The follower is a giggly and I am able to wow her with some techniques that I have perfected.
Dancing with a beginner is also time for me to take a break. Dancing with someone on or above my level can be a little more stressful because they sometimes expect more variety and complexity in my moves..
Some of my favorite dances of the night were with people that I could just vibe to the music with, and who were clearly enjoying dancing with me. This compared to the professional dancer who could do everything I led perfectly but looked bored the whole time.
One thing to remember is that poor followers make leaders a better leader, and poor leaders make followers a better follower because you have to learn to compromise. The best leaders are the ones who are able to match your skill level and cover for your mistakes, and similarly as a follower your skills at following is really tested when you're with a new lead.
So don't feel like you're wasting anyone's time. Everyone was beginners once and most people understand that and are really nice about it! And if they're being snobby about it then well it's their problem, not yours. I do understand the anxiety feeling of not being good enough though! But remember, you're a beginner and you're there to learn and have fun!
The key thing is just to be nice, have fun, accept when you make a mistake.Getting annoyed at the leader is understandable but counter-productive to a certain extent - unless they're hurting you, then that's a different story. Just laugh it off and have fun!

How to go from Intermediate to Advanced Dancer
How to take the next step in improving at an intermediate level.
What's the next step in getting better from an intermediate level?
____________________________________________
When world class dancers dance in front of a camera or crowd they dance different to how they dance socially when they do it purely for enjoyment. So unless your goal is to also become a "video dancer" or "stage dancer" or a really good social dancer ? Determine your goal and proceed from there.
private classes and joining a professional dance team.
Private classes from an instructor who you deem better than you, who you respect and are willing to be humble and learn. Private classes is what takes you from Intermediate to Advanced.
Join a dance team because of the amount of times you will be dancing. If its a legit dance team the head person will be a professional, who you will respect.
Honestly thinking about it, join a dance team if you cannot afford privates regularly.
If its a well known dance team with an amazing director, you will level up immensely.
I joined a dance team and that was a level up. I practice 3x a week minimum, and the choreo will show you new patterns. Plus they stress technique and basics so much.
1. Join a legit pro dance team
2. Take privates.
edit: I fucking HATED performing, I HATE IT.
But the practice sessions alone are worth the anxiety I always got back stage.
If you truly want to become advanced, your going to have to push yourself outside your comfort zone.

Leads : how often will you repeat a move that the follower is not getting ?
Question to leads regarding super beginner follows
how often will you repeat a move that you know that follow isn't getting?
A follower was frustrated that leads would not continuously repeat moves that she's screwing up and not getting so that she can learn it.
A good lead won't continuously force a move onto a follower who can't follow it.
A good lead, will however, have many more options at his disposal to make the dance enjoyable to the point where the follower won't even recognize when he's aborted some of the moves she can't follow.
a good lead can adapt to the skill level of their follow!
IMO, that's how a good lead approaches this situation.
if a lead does not continue with a move, maybe its because he doesn't want the follower to feel bad.
Social dancing is not training. So it can be rude to keep repeating something that is not working.
I avoid repeating a move that didn't work out and is simply because I want to enjoy the dance and I want my dance partner to enjoy the dance, there's no point on trying to force something that is not working out (applies to dance and to life as well).
I also try no not point out when a move goes wrong and I do my best to smooth out mistakes with something else, I am not keeping score at who is making the mistakes during the dance, I just want both of us to have a smooth experience and fun
if the mistake was mine I might try it again if I feel like it, if the mistake was minor or it didn't fail that bad I might also try again. As a rule, I try stuff at most twice - once because it happens to pop into my head while dancing and then once more as clear as I can if it does not work the first time. If it does not work the second time as well - too bad, time to move on
So if a follow wants ppl to repeat or to explain she has to be vocal and ask for it because no one likes unsolicited corrections or advice on the dance floor, she needs to say that she wants advice or corrections or repetitions.
Side note: if a follow is complaining that she is not getting any dances. It could be her attitude.
she can't be hiding in a corner, she needs to position herself in such way that someone can come to her and ask her, also she has to show she is open for a dance, smiling and enjoying the music. If she is in a corner looking at her phone or behind a bunch of ppl that is not gonna work. If you ever want to dance with any of your dance idols you'll have to go and ask yourself so she better learns how to ask for a dance now.

How do you stop comparing yourself to other dancers?
How do you stop comparing yourself to other dancers?
It’s all about mindset. It sounds like it bums you out because you can’t do those things. Try to see as inspiration to learn. Support dancers both above and below you, accept the same, and look for inspiration and motivation everywhere. Good luck out there.
Try to pinpoint exactly what it is that you admire about the dancers who you admire and use this as motivation to grow. jot it down on a list of goals for yourself. thank this person for giving you something to aspire to on your own journey, rather than discrediting your journey because someone is better. perfectionism is tough to beat i get it!
when I feel bad about my dancing, I think of times where I got positive feedback from peers and coaches. Reminding myself of “evidence” that I am talented and other people think so. you can even list out these moments in a journal or note on your phone and refer back to them when you feel less than great about your talent!
When it comes to skill level, you can only try to become better by comparing yourself to yourself. :)
Reflect on where you started and where you are today !! You have improved !!!!!
You are loved and cherished, if no one has told you today !!

Advice for beginner struggles
Advice for beginner struggles
This leader has been dancing for 4 months. He is becoming frustrated because he is not retaining the knowledge taught.
It's always going to be hard for leads in the beginning because we're initiating the moves. It's going to be frustrating but don't get discouraged, just keep practicing and working on your basics. My biggest advice is to count outloud. The sooner you count the sooner the dance will start to "click." Another is to take smaller steps.
Try to perfect the basic moves: cross body lead, left turn, right turn, outside turn, inside turn and basic step. lot of patterns build off of those.
I know you want to do all the cool moves (I know I did) but it is very, very important that your basics are solid before advancing otherwise you are going to end up frustrated.
A mistake beginners make is to only go to classes and not go social dancing. Classes are where you go to memorize moves. Socials are where you actually practice dancing. A rough outline is: 3 hours of social dancing for one hour of class. Socials allow you to practice applying the moves you know again and again which helps commit them to memory (as opposed to doing something once in a class then moving on to a million other things).
On learning complex dance patterns : regardless of how much is taught in the lesson, choose the smallest segment that you can remeber (usually 8 to 16 counts) and decide "this is what I work on".
And focus on the small segment. Also Try to think how you can end combos early, like "if I just cross body lead here it's back to normal" go to at least one social before the next class and make sure to try that move on everyone at least once. Remind yourself of the move before the social, or even mid social, with the video
listen to the songs you hear at socials a bunch at home so you get used to the music
Maybe it is your instructors teaching style, that does not work with you. If you have another teacher in the area, maybe give them a try?
A different system (teaching wise) might work better for you.
dont be disappointed that other people might learn faster. Comparison is the Thief of Joy. Stay on it. It keeps getting better over time. And dont forget to smile and have fun :)
try to develop muscle memory of the moves. So do it really slowly at first, speak up in class and ask your instructor to correct you so that you're getting it right from the beginning, and then do it again and again until you don't actually need to think about the move itself. That gets rid of the memorising of left and right or names of moves.
Ask some of the more experienced dance to dance with you and then ask them for feedback at the end of the dance.

Sensual Bachata - Leaders Becoming Aroused
What to do about getting aroused on the dance floor ?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CE0qLjDnzWY
For leaders of Bachata :
1. if you want to dance bachata sensual, in which you KNOW you'll be in close position, you gotta prepare so as not to disrespect the personal space of the people you're dancing with. So: you wear (boxer) briefs, so that you can position your junk and be fairly sure it will stay there.
2. And always put your personal items in your left pants pocket. Your right front pants pocket has to be empty too, no keys, no phone, no wallet! Why? Because the main part that will make a connection with your dance partner is the leader's right hip with the middle of the hips of the follower.
3. Next up the unexpected: You are dancing with an absolute wonderful follow and You feel blood rushing to your head, but it's the wrong head! What to do ??
Now just breathe, relax your position a bit, go for a more open position and do some normal turns or footwork, anything to take your mind of things.
If things are still 'tense' when you walk off the dancefloor, take a minute to flex (and keep flexed) a few large muscle groups, easiest is the thighs. If you flex muscles, your body will try to bring as much blood as possible to those muscles, and you'll be powering down in no time! But don't do your butt muscles, your glutes. Those tend to trap the blood in your junk, or pump even more blood in!
So, prepare, act respectful, get rid of the evidence, three easy steps to dancing bachata sensual as a gentleman!

Imposter Syndrome on the Dance Floor
How to feel good about my dancing?
A competitive dancer feels like they are limiting/holding back their partner’s full potential. When they first met, she was the beginner and he was more experienced, since then she has vastly improved her skillset, to the point where they are now winning competitions – but she still feel like shes holding back her partner. This person feels like a fraud and they are afraid people are speaking negatively behind their back. It has gotten to the point where they are having panic attacks during competitions.
many partnerships start out with an experienced partner and a newbie partner. Understand that you have to start somewhere,
Fuck everybody’s opinions. In competitive dancesport everybody has them and everybody is jealous in a way and wants to be better than you. So the only opinion that matters is yours, your dance partners and your coaches.
Regardless of what people say - The one thing to keep in mind is that you did put in the effort. You did learn the routines, styling and technique. Regardless of what others say, or make you think of yourself, you earned the skills that you have. Don't let others take away your achievement!
imposter syndrome is real and It's also quite common in the dancing world that people become extremely anxious about competing;
I would focus first on getting your panic attacks under control so you can effectively demonstrate on the floor the dancing that you work so hard on at practice. I wonder if a therapist or a meditation center or even yoga instructor could help. Our physical reactions are closely tied to our mental state and vice versa, so engaging in a physical act of calming may also help you to focus mentally.
Once you are able to avoid the panic attacks, it may also help to get into each comp with a goal of what you as a partnership want to demonstrate. Afterward, get the video, and watch it WITH YOUR COACH to get an objective opinion on what y'all did well and what areas still need work, then make a plan. If you watch it by yourself, you will get fixated on your own shortcomings and spiral - it won't be helpful.
Couples Competition Dancing - is both incredible and terrible because the partnership is the entity that is judged. I think that over time you will think less and less about you vs. your partner, and more about the two of you versus the other couples on the floor (which is the only thing that matters, competitively).
You can do this! And you will look back later and be proud of all you accomplished and learned through the process
