Is it too late to start social dancing? #Salsa #Kizomba #Bachata Brazilian #Zouk
If you have to ask this question then, The answer is of course, Yes !
If you did not shoot out your mothers womb doing a two step, you are destined to fail.
If you have not taken at least 12 years of ballet by the age of 14, GIVE UP NOW !!
If the idea of performing in front of a crowd of people makes your stomach queasy, Don’t quit your day job bub.
If you’ve ever had to youtube dance lessons, you may as well go cry in a corner because You are lost.
If you have not won 3 international dance competitions by the age of 21, you need to find a new hobby !
If you have not taught and instructed at least 5 world renown dancers, Don’t waste my time.
Simultaneously if you have not dedicated the past 30 years of your life, spent at least $100,000 in personal training, sacrificed your second born to the late great Shirley Temple or Michael Jackson. You do not have what it takes.
Dancing is not a sport for the weak willed or ill hearted, It takes dedication and determination. And by you asking that question just shows, you’re better off doing crochet.
People like you make me sick, scum of the earth. Think you can just pick up a new hobby whenever you feel like it. Pfffffft. Ill have you know, in my mothers womb, I was already practicing my basic step.
By 3 months old, I was teaching Salsa choreographies to Eddie Torres.
By 12 months, I had traveled the globe and brought Bachata to Middle Earth.
By 2 years old, I had already opened up a Kizomba Academy for the Blind.
The following year, I led a 7 person team across Brasil. Where I taught the locals the wonderful style of Brazilian Zouk.
If 👏 you 👏 resume 👏 does 👏 not 👏 compare 👏 go 👏 back 👏 to 👏 bed.
By 8 years old, Time Magazine had already named me the most important toddler EVER. The story was quickly shelved, due to the Kizomba Academy for the Blind having too many casualties. I definitely should have built a guard rail on that rooftop. But that is beside the point!
If you do not have a podcast where you interview the most amazing dancers on this planet, you should be ashamed 😉
If they have not built a statue of you that also serves as a religious holy site, why would you even bother to start?
If my point has not been made by now, then let me sum this up for you.
If you are not the great descendant of the Greek God Apollo, then this just is not going to work out.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talks.

Does learning from youtube videos create bad habits?
Does learning from youtube videos create bad habits?
The answer is both yes and no. This video, I will argue it from both sides.
If your main goal is to become familiar/comfortable with the basic step. Online Videos can be a great help. If you are goal is to become proficient in partner dancing, Then you need in person classes.
I prefer in person classes, since you can ask about anything that comes up,
Online Pre-recorded Videos, You do not have the ability to question the instructor.
But I will say it doesn't hurt for you to go through a few videos and learn the basics. Obviously, if you're by yourself, it's impossible to learn the partner work.
Online videos only show a limited pre-scripted angle of dancing. It doesn't have the adaptive, flexibility of a teacher, the nuance of partner dancing and opportunities of class learning.
It should be SUPPLEMENTARY to taking classes, not a replacement.
If you watch a beginner video by a good and reputable teacher you are good. Initially you may even learn more than in the class because you can replay and practice at your own pace. BUT Still going to class is important to understanding the theory, and of course ask questions.
Watching videos does run the risk of creating bad habits. If you are a beginner and you try to learn intermediate/advanced techniques, This can lead to bad habits, Because you do not have a good understanding of the basic underlying fundamentals that lead to the more advanced techniques.
If you are curious what is the best use of your time, then you should pursue whatever is the most fun, it will get you past the beginners hump quicker and be more entertaining.

Where to look while partner dancing?
Where to look while dancing?
Where should I look while dancing? In the eyes of the follower? Or just don't overthink and keep it natural.
Try to keep your head up and have a mixture of of connecting with follower and intentionally scanning your surroundings to make sure you aren’t dancing into anyone/anything and no one dances into you. Connection with follow can be a brief smile, quick scan of surroundings, then a smile again, broken up of course by your turn patterns and other moves, in which case you are looking in the direction you are leading the follow, ready to adjust course as needed.
If looking at their eyes feels too much like staring into their soul, you can look between the eyebrows, or at the nose
Remember you ALSO use your eyes to lead, so if you're going to move to the left maybe look to the left for the moment to indicate that's where the dance will go.
The best leaders are enjoying the dance and music, and are trying to make sure I'm enjoying it too! You can tell when they are smiling authentically, and their partner is like an extension of their enjoyment of the music. Personally, when I'm really having fun I don't even think about where I'm looking.

Question and Answer for 03 MAR 2022
New episode Next week everyone. I promise I have some interviews scheduled!
Question and Answer for 03 MAR 2022
Is it ok to start learning social dancing in order to meet the opposite sex?
IMO There’s nothing wrong with doing social dancing to meet the opposite sex. If you want dating prospects you have to leave the house and do things. One of the uses for dancing is social networking and creating a romantic connection. (A dance can also be platonic).
There is going to be a plethora of white knights who protest and say “if you are taking dance classes to just impress the ladies, please find another hobby”. I completely disagree with that. I see dance classes as an opportunity to find somebody who also enjoys the same hobby as you. People are often so quick to jump to the negative, but what about the positive experiences? I met my last GF through social dancing, and I am super happy and grateful for the time we spent together.
If I were to give advice to somebody who is looking to meet the opposite sex from dance classes, I will say this.
“If you want to meet and attract the opposite sex, become good at something. That is an EASY Way to become attractive. If you can focus on becoming proficient at a skill, attractiveness will come as a byproduct. This does not apply to every skill/hobby. But luckily for you, it does apply to social dancing. The best dancers have lines of people wanting to dance with them. There is something about watching an individual excel at their craft, its almost mesmerizing, inspiring. Why is it? I think its because we understand that this person has dedicated time and effort to become who they are. I believe they everyone understands on a basic level, that anything worth something, you have to work for. And so when we are able to find someone who is good at a skill, we understand that this person has good traits and qualities that we admire. This is why people love professional athletes, yes they are physically gifted, but they have also dedicated years of their life to a specific skillset. And if you are not a fan of sports, think about your favorite movie actor or film director. This people have dedicated their lives to their craft. Anyone can turn on a camera and press record. Only the greats have the ability to hold your attention. I say all this to say, Get good at your dreams, desires, wants, and I believe everything else in life will fall Into place.
Next question
This BF/GF starting dance classes together. At some point the Boyfriend became more serious about the dance. Now when they go to socials together, the BF is approached by females, but the females never address the girlfriend (Say hi, introduce themselves) they only talk to the BF. But the exact same is true for the GF. Men will approach her and talk to her, but they will not address the BF. The GF is becoming insecure about this situation because she believes that these women are trying to make a statement of how they have more power over the BF than she does as the GF. I hope this makes sense to everyone.
dance socials are full of people you may not know. if i see a friend standing next to a stranger, I just naturally address my greeting to the friend. I do include the other person in my greeting if I get the impression they are important to my friend.
It sounds like the gf may be getting insecure about the developing dance relationships with other women. If so, the question is whether she can work through her insecurities and maintain a trusting relationship with the BF. You cannot do it for her, no matter how much you try. You can only help her by being communicative and transparent, and making sure she feels prioritized in your life.
It is very normal in dance circles that leads get to know the follows and vice versa, because we dance together. I'd also argue that the ladies tend to get to know other ladies better than men get to know other men, because commonly there are fewer leads than follows and ladies talk when waiting for the next song. just remember that you make friends with the people you’re dancing with. Most people dance most of the time with the opposite gender. It’s not romantic or sexual, it’s just following gender norms. Just reassure her that while you mostly dance with women and therefore befriend lots of women, that’s just because of the nature of the dance. You love the dance, but as far as people go she’s your one & only. It doesn’t matter what the other women do or think.
I am curious if people even know that these two are couples? I would advise they both introduce the other when someone comes over to speak. “Hey this is my BF or Hey this is my GF”.
Like I said earlier, I think it’s a natural thing when it comes to improving that people will want to dance with you more and more. You can kind of see when sitting on the side which leads really know what they’re doing and that makes the dance more exciting and smooth.
Lastly I want to say, it may be easy to act bravado or all machismo. But in all honesty, I’d recommend focusing on acknowledging your partners feelings. As silly and ridiculous as they may seem to you sometimes, the last thing you want to do is dismiss their feelings. Reassure them that you are not out there looking for a romantic adventure.

I am Advanced in class but Horrible during dance socials
Advanced in class, Horrible during social
This individual has been taking lessons and/or clubs 2-4 times per week for a year! But they are SCARED TO DEATH to dance in a setting there they have to come up with the moves. Their mind literally goes blank and they struggle with even the most basic moves.
The short answer is that you don't have the basics or any figures in your muscle memory. What will help is going to more socials and focusing on a single move or two until you don't have to think about it when dancing. Try out a single figure with all of the followers until it becomes automatic.
Then move on to the next figure. And don't worry about the time frame. Be kind to yourself and try to enjoy the process instead of rush the process. A year is a VERY short time! Especially for a lead that has to learn how to not only move their own body, but to move someone else’s as well.
it’s common to overestimate one’s abilities. Sometimes its good to take a few lower level classes or stay in the one you are, but focusing on the technique and the fundamentals instead of combinations/patterns. Without proper technique and fundamentals your social dancing will constantly fall apart.
Let me also add that For me one’s level is as good as one’s social dancing. If you can’t pull off the patterns taught in class during the social with a competent follower then; either the teaching is not good or you’re not really that advanced.
There is a subtle but important difference between “doing” the class choreo when the follow knows what’s coming and can even do it by herself, to fully understanding it and being able to do lead it with a follower not from class. In the first situation you may think you know it, but probably you don’t if the second does not happen. This if often called back-leading, where the follower will aid the lead in class taught situations.
The problem could be that your classes are focusing on patterns instead of technique. Try to find a teacher that teaches leading and following, and breaks down each move count by count, rather than just doing a fancy pattern each class.
One tip could be to write down all of the moves you knew, and figured out a way to arrange them all in a long sequence. Then, practice those, in that order, like you are practicing a speech or learning the lyrics to a song. You just need to remember how it started, and then you should be good for a minute of more of the song. When you get to the end, just start over. the follow is not keeping track of what order you did everything in and she will not call you out for just running the same sequence again.
Eventually, what happens is, you start recognizing every "configuration" and you start to realize Oh, I know three different moves I can do from here", and one of those moves will land you in a configuration where you knew two different moves from there.
it might be time to look for a different school, take private lessons, attend advanced workshops by visiting international instructors, or get involved with a performance team to push your skills further. Most schools do not offer truly advanced group classes regularly, as there is not enough clientele for them, so the "advanced" label gets attached to the last set of group classes they offer, even if they are more intermediate in nature.
Here are some things to try next time you dance:
• smile at your partner, try to make them laugh
• laugh at one of your mistakes
• talk to your partner
Try to enjoy the music, try to enjoy your partners company, and make dancing secondary to those things. Your anxiety will go down when it's clear your partner is having fun.

First time taking a #Salsa #Bachata #Kizomba #Zouk #BrazilianZouk Class
They are worried that their awkwardness on the dance floor will prevent them from getting better.
They want to know What was your experience like learning to dance as a beginner and how did you break through that confidence barrier and get better at salsa dancing?
I think for most people it’s awkward at first. We all start somewhere and no one is going to expect you to be good right away. Just try your best to shake it off and have fun!
You need to keep going and if you enjoy it you will get better. One tip I can give you, start listening Salsa a lot , that will help you with your musicality.
I got a lot better when I stopped trying to prove something to myself or others and started focusing primarily on the music and how it made me feel.
It helps a lot to go out to socials with your class group, it will make you feel a lot less pressure and get a lot more practice since you'll feel very comfortable with them.
Count and practice your basic while listening to the music. You can do that anywhere
It is all about creating muscle memory to the point you don't have to think about the moves. So practice, practice, practice.
Advice for Socials - socials are another story because now there is pressure to stay on beat for a whole song and you may not feel like you know enough moves to keep the dance fun/interesting.
To get over this ask a different girl to dance every time you go out. This will give you more confidence and experience in leading/following with differing skill levels.
This is also an opportunity to get in "reps" of right turns, left turns, cross-body leads, etc. After a while you will become more confident in those moves and dancing will become more fun.
Most importantly you should expect yourself to mess up. Be comfortable with messing up because we are all learning something new. Just laugh it off and continue moving
When a more experienced dancer sees a new dancer – we are not thinking they suck! they should be embarrassed. I am empathizing with them and even remembering my beginner stage.
when i notice someone is clearly nervous, i think, "no need to be nervous. that's not gonna help. dancing is supposed to be fun. just let loose even if you look ridiculous. youll get it in a few weeks and the new beginners will be admiring you instead."
Understand the teachers see hundreds of new students that show up and drop out after a few weeks. they likely won't even remember you were there a minute after class. the other students will be too nervous thinking about how they looked to worry about you. Just remember that unless you are a performer or instructor, no one is looking at you.
Good class etiquette --Make sure you show up as fresh as possible, shower, brush and floss, fresh deodorant, clip and file your nails, lotion your hands, maybe some gum. I know it seems obvious to most folks but a reminder never hurts.
--When rotating to new partner, remember to smile and tell them your name.
--Try your best to follow along, but if your partner messes up, don't try to teach them. Unless they're doing something that could hurt you or makes you uncomfortable, let them learn at their own pace with the instructors help. A gentle and humble "I think we go this way" should be the most you share.
--Sometimes it goes all wrong when trying out something you just learned, it's a process and it's rare that we do anything perfect right away. Remember to smile, thank your partner, and know it gets better
Getting familiar with the the music --Use the Salsa Beat Machine online or download the paid app. Use the instructor to hear the counts and rhythm, you can also mute instruments to help make sense of what you're hearing.
And Finally - Relaxing, being humble, and staying kind will help you find friends to practice with and goes a long way to gaining confidence.

Street Dancing vs School Taught Dancing.
Street Dancing vs School Taught Dancing.
This person went to South America, and they were unable to dance with the local dancers.
I believe this person encountered bar dancing. It just happens that instead of "western" pop music they are playing salsa and other latin music. Which is their pop music.
In a lot of cultures, people were taught how to dance while growing up with their families, so formal dancing is not common for most. They were probably encouraged to dance and Certainly they have lots of examples to watch but the quality of the examples has a big impact on their dancing skill. most other places in the world learn to dance growing up more than we do in the US, but that doesn't mean it's formalized and structured.
In the US at least, a lot of people are Taught how to Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, Brazilian Zouk dance from Schools. So there is a structured guideline, you could almost think of it like a language.
You could call it structured vs unstructured Dancing or even instructed vs uninstructed dancing.
There is definitely a difference between those who learned to dance in a studio vs. those who learned at home/through family, Casual Dancing.
In South America, The average girl you meet at a bar, club or in a casual dance setting is probably not going to understand linear salsa. It’s not a style of dance that’s intuitive to someone with zero experience with it. If you want utilize the linear lessons you learned, find socials at a dance studio or go to festivals. There are plenty in major cities no matter what country you are in.
If you like causal bar or club settings, learn some basic Cuban salsa, Cumbia, and bachata and work on connection. Some dancers find studio dancing intimidating.

Explaining to non-dancers the sensual aspect of Social Dancing
Explaining to non-dancers the sensual aspect of dancing.
I think it’s like acting in a play or being in a music video. It is a game people play that has many benefits such as developing social skills, self-expression and an antidote to loneliness.
In some situations It’s practice for the real thing. In other cases they are not acting.
For Sensual Bachata understand that bachata was invented in a brothel and was considered vulgar for a couple decades. Call it what it is. A sexual dance that your good at, and have learned to see as more then just a dance. You have made it a skill.
For a lot of people social dancing looks sexual to them because they have been brainwashed by pop culture to be over-sexualized, to think and see things in that way.
Social Dancers are able to Convey Sexiness. What I mean is that:
Sensual Dancers are able to make the dance extra sexy as a 'performance' without necessarily having to be aroused, because they understand how to convey this impression voluntarily, on command. A good example of that: Strippers are very good at conveying sexiness without actually being aroused or in the mood.
