Tips on becoming a better follow? Social Dancing
Tips on becoming a better follow? Social Dancing
Follower has been told that she anticipates moves.
When you're practicing, ask your partner to sometimes throw in other moves as well! Preferably that starts somewhat the same. Try not to practice choreographies you see in classes in their entirety, but just their individual parts.
Or you could even try practicing with a blindfold on. Obviously, ask the lead, someone you trust, to do this only basic steps and easy turns in a safe, well lit location where it’s just you and the lead on the floor. Try with and without music.
Attending socials and dancing with different leads will help. Particularly if you see new faces or leads who learned elsewhere.
I think something that's quite important psychologically for following to really work is trusting the leader and letting go of control. It's why the role is called following - you're not the one calling the shots. You're going along with what the leader is doing. This requires comfort, vulnerability, feeling safe. Those are not easy things to have especially starting off dancing with complete strangers who are clueless as well. So remind yourself of that and give yourself time to acclimate.
Now another aspect of it has to do with the quality of communication between leader and follower. Part of why you're predicting moves may be because of a poor ambiguous signal of a move from the leader. That's something that can only be determined by dancing with solid leaders. So ensure that in classes the instructor leads you through a move a few times so you know what it should feel like.
Another part may be that you've got to work on your framing, body control and positioning. This is basically what sets you up to be lead appropriately. If you're too loose, it'll be like trying to get cooked spaghetti to dance, it just goes everywhere. If you're too stiff it's like trying to move something really heavy across the floor which sometimes jerks around or gets stuck.
From what I've seen, the best followers are excellent at shines and I believe that's because it gives them a solid amount of body control and positioning and a good understanding of what a person would need to have their body moved as they know how to move their own body. So I really recommend working on shines. If I was to start dancing anew - I'd prioritize shines over partnerwork. I'd film the instructor, practice solo, film myself, compare videos and slowly pick one thing at a time to fix about my movement and work on it.
Another common thing I found in my area with the best followers is that they did private lessons with a well-known specialist in teaching following. If there's someone like that in your area, it'd probably be a good idea to do a few lessons. Ask the good follows in your area and see what they say.

How to politely tell leads they are not leading right?
How to politely tell leads they are not leading right?
Follower was nervous to dance with a particular lead, due to him almost hurting her during a pattern. She also complained about the lead squeezing her hand too tight.
Pain or danger of getting hurt warrants clear communication. Point it out in a direct manner and if you can, right after it happens- sometimes an "ouch" will suffice with the hand squeezing.
Don't be shy about it! There is no need to be nervous about protecting your physical integrity.
During lessons you should and are expected to provide feedback to the leads. It’s a fundamental part of their learning process.
Now, I want to make a distinction between differences in opinion and comfort. If it’s painful then he should listen to you, period. There’s no argument. You should never be feeling pain. If you are, your lead is doing something wrong - even when you as a follow do so something wrong it’s the lead’s responsibility to prevent you harm, always
On the topic of hand squeezing, this is something I am dealing with as an experienced lead with beginner follows. I guess this is just an issue with beginners. You can say something like “Hi, when you lead, you squeeze my hand and it makes me uncomfortable and it hurts. Can you please not do that again?”
Be direct. Your safety in dancing, especially as a follow since you have less control, is greater than the lead’s feelings. If they can’t accept it, don’t dance with them, or tell your instructor. Or if being direct is too much for you, tell the teacher and have them handle it for you.
I will say as a leader I WANT feedback about my dancing. So please do not withhold your opinion. Unless it’s negative, don’t tell me that. Tell me how good I was and how amazing of a time you had

I feel like I bore the followers I dance with.
He has been dancing for 3 months. When he is social dancing he runs out of dance moves. How can he make the dance more interesting for the follow?
Followers should understand that everyone was a beginner at some point.
A lot of follows do not care about how many skills you know, as long as you’re both having fun! If your face looks bored, then it's hard to enjoy. If you're enjoying the dance, so is the follow. Sometimes it's really nice to have a dance with more beginner moves, after you had a couple of advanced dances. The follows need time to breath. Don't worry, keep dancing and HAVE FUN.
A lot of beginners believe that it is the amount of patters you know that separates dancers. In my opinion this is not true. People will do 4 or 5 things and just add variations on top of it so it looks and feels different.
The pro tip is to focus a lot more on musicality and less on moves; people can appreciate when they see that you are interpreting the song instead of just repeating moves that you memorized.
Try to take the moves you have, add variations, break them into pieces, extend them and play with them so it matches the song
Some of the most important moves are 1: Staying on beat and on time. If your basic step is IN TIME with the music and you always know how to "find the 1", then that's going to make the dance enjoyable by default.
2: If you execute a: basic steps, cross body leads, reverse cross body lead, around the world, cross body lead turn, cross body lead turn to wraparound. If you can do these you're good.
Shines are a great way to make the dance more interesting. Shines allow you the opportunity to break apart from your dance partner and freestyle this can be very simple, something like a few turns or maybe a Susie Q, or even just your basic step. If you listen for a bridge in a song you can break off and allow the follower to have a bit of fun then link up with a cross body Lead. Side note: Not all follows enjoy shines, some get lost like a deer in headlights.
Finally please understand that as a lead you are going to have a hard time at the beginning. There are simply too many things you are learning. This causes you to look stressed and feel stressed and this is what follows are reacting to. It’s not the complexity of your patterns.
So as others have said, try to relax, don’t try too hard, and focus on musicality, shines, interaction with your dance partner. Improve the mood of the experience

Social Dancing Burnout
Social Dancing Burnout?
This person has been social dancing for the past 5 years, and they consider themselves at an advanced level.
Lately, I've been experiencing a bit of monotony with social dancing.
They are starting to feel that all the socials are more or less the same. Same people, same songs, same patterns, etc. They go to dance class 4x week.
Try mixing up your class training with some cross-training. Ballet, jazz, contemporary, afro-Cuban, hip hop, whacking, popping, etc.
Humans crave new things all the time, and you can avoid burnout by giving your body something new to chew on. Be a beginner again; it’s wonderful with the right attitude.
And the beautiful thing is…it will all still help your salsa in the end.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s ok to take a step back and see how it is. It is okay to try out a different dance style.
It's probably good to think about the reasons a bit more deeply. Why do you need new people? Why do you need new songs? Why do you need new patterns? What are you lacking?
If you live in a small place with very few places to dance. That's how you know you need to start traveling and going to festivals. I highly recommend going to festivals. That’s such an energy and inspiration boost. And it will open your eyes to the potential, to the level you can aim to. Going to festivals and start meeting teachers from other cities/countries and learning from the very famous teachers you'll discover that the very high level you thought you have is not so high. Realizing that you still have room to grow and learn will bring your passion back and will open a whole new world of dance for you. You might even want to move cities to somewhere with a better dance scene
If the dance scene around you is not engaging enough, start your own projects. Get a group of like-minded dancers and meet weekly to practice. Once the ball is rolling you can invite some good instructors now and then. If your scene is not that big a handful of motivated dancers can make all the difference
Have you considered joining a team? Usually, they will dedicate more time to body movement drills and styling/technique and will help fine-tune the moves you already know.

Social Dancing Burnout
Social Dancing Burnout

Jealousy and Insecurity with Significant other social dancing.
Jealousy and Insecurity with Significant other social dancing.
in a relationship, both parties are allowed to feel how they want to feel. It takes open honest communication between people to find a happy ground that both are comfortable with. What that looks like depends on the individuals involved. Some couples have a no sensual dance rule, others prefer not to know about what their partner does on the dance floor.
Everyone is different and the only way to get over those differences is to talk it out.
Dancing is something important to you, or whatever hobby you enjoy. No one should ever sacrifice their hobbies and individual identity to be with someone! If you have to stop being yourself to be with someone then that person is NOT for you.
Becoming a good dancer takes time and effort. It is not a hobby you can do once or twice a year.
It is understandable if you are unwilling to give up your primary hobby because of someone else's preferences, regardless of whether they are driven by their culture, their personal insecurities, or something else. It is not about being a jerk or insensitive to your partner's feelings. If they are not happy with you dancing or any hobby, they are probably not a good fit for you.

How to be productive in practice sessions with my partner?
How to be productive in practice sessions with my partner?
This couple struggles to give each other feedback. Wanted to know how to have a productive practice session?
When they practice together, they are struggling to NOT become irritated with each other, for various reasons.
I'm not an expert but I definitely believe partners can work through any issues if they are committed.
1. Focus on one or two things only in each practice session that you both can control within your own dancing, and give and receive feedback only on that thing. Works best when it is a technique item from a recent lesson. Agree to each other's items before starting practice and hold each other to it.
2. I think I would stop giving feedback on how I thought they lead or follow - the information was always better coming from the coach.
3. If you do not understand your partner's feedback or you are unable to implement it. Put it on a list for the coach for your next lesson or to ask an advanced dancer for advice if isn’t coach wasn't available for a while. That way your partner doesn't feel that their feedback goes unnoticed.
4. Mixed up your practice sessions - some days do stamina work like rounds, other days do a side-by-side practice, or go to a pilates class together, other days work on musicality. This variety can help remove the sense of having the same interpersonal problems day in and day out.
5. Like I said earlier but I feel it's very important to write down your feedback very specifically, then both of you go to your teachers TOGETHER and have them help you troubleshoot. What could possibly frustrate you two for hours, a good coach/teacher can troubleshoot in 15 minutes.

Should I learn Salsa and Bachata at the same time?
Should I learn Salsa and Bachata at the same time?
I recommend it. In my experience people who often wait too long to start learning the other dance at the social often end up not learning it and just sitting on the sidelines when all the other songs play.
It may be slightly more overwhelming at the beginning, but not too much and your brain will adjust quickly. I had two left feet when I started dancing, and while I did struggle a bit initially I am now super grateful that I stuck with both dances from the beginning.
Salsa and Bachata are pretty much played at each other’s respective socials now. And even when you eventually go to congresses, they’ll most likely have both Salsa and Bachata. If your scene is large enough you may find socials that only do specific dances but most likely your scene is smaller and they will play everything.
One thing that helps, a ton of bachata moves translate pretty easily to salsa.
The more dances you learn, the better a dancer you’ll become. It’s like learning new dialects in a chosen language.
So I highly recommend you learn both at the same time. Especially because you can take a break from one and practice the other. I would say that they also enhance each other by doing them together. Your sense of musicality and your instincts to move your body and have good frame will be greatly improved with salsa. And that will carry into bachata and vice versa.
But I want to add that specifically for leads: In the beginner stage you may become frustrated. Trying to learn two dances can be difficult. I’ve seen many guys stop after one year of not learning fast enough. I wouldn’t take it lightly: learning to lead properly can be pretty rough the first year. So please keep this in mind when you become frustrated. It is just apart of the learning process.
