Philby, a former British intelligence officer, was then a Beirut-based journalist. The meeting was also reported by author Nigel West in his 1982 book on British spies, “A Matter of Trust.” West and the published reports said Rothschild was tipped off by a British woman, Flora Solomon, who told him in 1962 that Philby had tried to recruit her as a Soviet spy in the 1930s. Rothschild immediately arranged a meeting at his London home between Solomon and the head of Britain’s MI-6 overseas intelligence service, in which Philby had served. Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, 3rd Baron Rothschild, Bt, GBE, GM, FRS (31 October 1910 – 20 March 1990), was a senior executive with Royal Dutch Shell and N M Rothschild & Sons, an advisor to the Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher governments of the UK, as well as a member of the prominent Rothschild family. Rothschild was recruited to work for MI5 during World War II in roles including bomb disposal, disinformation and espionage, winning the George Medal for "dangerous work in hazardous circumstances". He appears several times in the book Spycatcher, which he hoped would clear the air over suspicions about his wartime role and the possibility he was involved in the Cambridge spy ring. He was still able to enter the premises of MI5 as a former employee and was aware of suspicions there was a "mole" in MI5, but felt himself above suspicion. While Edward Heath was Prime Minister, Rothschild was a frequent visitor to Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence. Throughout his life, he was a valued adviser on intelligence and science to both Conservative and Labour Governments. In 1993, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, six retired KGB colonels, including Yuri Modin, the spy ring's handler, alleged Rothschild was the "Fifth Man". Modin claimed, "Rothschild was the key to most of the Cambridge ring's penetration of British intelligence. 'He had the contacts,' Modin noted. 'He was able to introduce Burgess, Blunt and others to important figures in Intelligence such as Stewart Menzies, Dick White and Robert Vansittart in the Foreign Office...who controlled MI6." The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has demanded a halt to the "intolerable" human suffering in the besieged Gaza Strip, as the Israeli regime escalates its now 22-day-old bloody war of aggression against the coastal territory. "This is a catastrophic failing that the world must not tolerate," president of the ICRC, Mirjana Spoljaric, said on Saturday. "I am shocked by the intolerable level of human suffering and urge the parties to the conflict to de-escalate now," she said, adding, "The tragic loss of so many civilian lives is deplorable." Mr Hallam said he was sorry but his remarks were taken out of context. More than six million Jews were murdered by Nazi Germany and its allies because of their identity. In pursuit of their racist goal, the Nazis built "death factories" - concentration camps like Auschwitz where mass killing was conducted through the use of gas chambers and crematoria. Warning: story contains offensive language Mr Hallam's comments were widely criticised. In response, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said the Nazi genocide was "uniquely inhumane". Far-right politicians in Germany have recently caused controversy by belittling the magnitude of the Holocaust or criticising the country's determination to raise awareness of it. What exactly did Hallam say? The Holocaust was, he was quoted by the Die Zeit newspaper as saying in English, "just another fuckery in human history". The "fact of the matter is, millions of people have been killed in vicious circumstances on a regular basis throughout history", he added. Genocides had happened repeatedly over the past 500 years, he said, and "in fact, you might say it is like a regular event". Mr Hallam gave the example of the Belgians who "went to the Congo in the late 19th century and decimated it". Millions died there under Belgian colonial rule. As for Germany's extensive attempts to remember and teach about the Holocaust, Mr Hallam said: "The extremity of a trauma can create a paralysis in actually learning the lessons from it." It has now been confirmed that such horrors occurred. And she said there was a ‘shocking’ difference in global response to the killing of Israelis by Hamas, and the killing of Gazans by Israel. ‘Are we being told that it is wrong to kill a family, an entire family, at gunpoint – but it’s okay to shell them to death?’ she asked CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. ‘I mean, there is a glaring double standard here. ‘And it’s just shocking to the Arab world.’ Amanpour began by asking the 53-year-old how she had felt since the Hamas attack of October 7 ‘as an Arab, as a Palestinian, as a mother, as a human being’. Rania replied: ‘I cannot begin to describe to you the depth of the grief, the pain and the shock that we are feeling here in Jordan.’ She said her country, home to the world’s largest Palestinian population, was ‘united in grief, regardless of our origin’. Rania said that she was horrified by the images of mothers writing their child’s name on their limbs, so they could be identified if they were killed in airstrikes. ‘I just want to remind the world that Palestinian mothers love their children just as much as any other mother in the world,’ she added. The queen called the killings of Palestinians ‘butchery’. ‘Six thousand civilians killed so far, 2,400 children – how is that self-defense?’ she asked. ‘We are seeing butchery at a mass scale using precision weapons. ‘For the past two weeks, we have seen the indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza: entire families wiped out, residential neighborhoods flattened to the ground, the targeting of hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, medical workers, journalists, UN aid workers – how is that self defense?’ The queen, who worked at Citibank and in the marketing department of Apple before marrying Abdullah, now the king, in 1993, said the Arab world was angered by the hypocrisy of the West. We are seeing staggering human suffering happening today, so why is the narrative always skewed towards the Israeli side?’ she asked. ‘The Western media and policymakers are quick to adopt the Israeli narratives. When Israel attacks, Palestinians ‘die’, but when Israelis die, they are ‘killed,’ ‘murdered in cold blood.” She said the response to the Hamas attack was telling.

Prior to the vote, two amendments proposed by Russia, calling for an immediate, durable and full ceasefire, and to stop attacks against civilians were rejected by the Security Council. Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told Council Ambassadors “the time for diplomatic metaphors is long gone.” Anyone who did not support Russia’s draft resolution on this issue bears responsibility for what happens, he said. For many years he worked at the heart of Britain's nuclear industry, now he is hired by governments around the world to give an expert independent view on all issues radioactive. This 2 hr. talk was recorded July 2002 in the run-up to the review of safety measures round the Royal Navy's Plymouth dockyard. Devonport is worthy of attention, its a major nuclear base in the middle of a city. Large explains, in the public interest, the real dangers of Devonport which have been hushed up by DML and the Royal Navy. (from £3.00) John Large goes into several accident scenarios: BR1; BR2; BR3, put forward by the UK Ministry of Defence and examines how realistic they are. He comes to the conclusion that these scenarios tell only half the story of real accident situations and seem to be designed to fit the confines of the Devonport dockyard boundary. Could it be that the owners and managers of Devonport, DML, don't want to have to pay for proper safety measures for the people of Plymouth? The idea of having nuclear submarines based in a city with 200,000 people is questioned. One of the reasons these submarines are still based in Plymouth is because the Scottish parliament will not accept any expansion of facilities in Scotland, even though these bases, Faslane, Coalport, Rossyth are all further away from centres of population. Large then explains another accident scenario which has not been revealed to civilian emergency planners: BR6. In BR6 the Ministry of Defence envisage a major accident with meltdown of the nuclear reactor core within minutes. This would allow a massive release of radiation. This talk was only necessary because Devonport Management Ltd, who own and run the nuclear dockyard, have been using the excuse of 'military secrecy' to hide the real dangers of their operations from elected officials, civilian safety agencies and the public at large. They hoped, for financial reasons that no-one would penetrate the wall of secrecy when preparing the new DEVPUBSAFE emergency plan for the city. Someone even managed to persuade Plymouth City Council's Chief Executive Alison Stone to write to all Councillors in the City asking they stay away from this 'unofficial' lecture, even though she is supposed to be overseeing safety for the public. All this... and the authorities have refused to take into account the threat of terrorist attack since the September 11th WTC attacks. Despite the fact that Devonport is likely to be one of the main terrorist targets in the world.
