We are currently enjoying the longest spell of blazing sunshine for seven years after enduring a succession of washouts. But what other historic heatwaves have stood the test of time to be remembered as truly Great British Summers? Below are our top five of the last century: 2003 The highest temperature ever recorded in Britain was set during the sizzling summer of 2003, when the 100-Fahrenheit mark was broken for the first and only time. The mercury soared to 38.5C (101.3F) at Brogdale, near Faversham, Kent, on August 10, smashing the previous 1990 record of 37.1C (98.8F). Across Europe, around 70,000 people are believed to have died during the worst heatwave on the continent for almost 500 years. Britain luckily escaped the worst following a cool and wet two-week period at the end of July and beginning of August. It led to the worst drought for 27 years and wilting crops led to a 12% shortfall in wheat, causing the price of bread to soar. But most Britons were simply content to enjoy what was the first sustained heatwave in almost a decade with, notably, a mud-free Glastonbury festival for once. 1976 The hottest British summer on record was 1976, when for 25 straight days the temperature hit at least 26.7C (80F). For 15 days during the spell, between June 22 and July 16, the mercury soared beyond 32.2C (90F) somewhere in England. The temperature exceeded 35C (95F) for five blistering days of the heatwave, peaking at 35.9C (96.6F) on July 3 in Cheltenham. It was perfect weather for women to wear the some of the decade’s notoriously skimpy outfits, although not so great for men with long hair and flairs. But there were major downsides as Britain suffered its worst drought in history, with water being rationed in some places by standpipes in the streets. Some areas went without rain from the start of the main heatwave until the last week of August. 1959 Prior to 1976, the most memorably hot summer had been in 1959. Blue skies dominated the horizons for weeks with most places in southern England seeing temperatures above 21C (70F) for at least 100 days. It was remembered as a gloriously long and comfortable summer – with only five days exceeding 30C (86f) - and few downpours to spoil picnics. In fact, there was so little rain that the five months between May and September remain the driest on record and resulted in a drought. A British Pathé newsreel captured the mood of the nation by reporting – with a degree of astonishment - the first downpour of the summer. "That stuff, yes it’s called rain, something we used to have in England a long time ago," begins the commentary before showing footage of a parched landscape. 1949 The summer of 1949 – which was the hottest in 30 years – also saw one of the worst droughts on record. A heatwave between mid-June and the end of July exacerbated the water shortages caused by an earlier dry winter. In London, even nighttime temperatures did not drop below 24C (75C) during this period. People took to sleeping in Hyde Park and other cool green spaces rather than sweating in their beds at home. Areas hit by drought included bone-dry Rivington Reservoir near Preston and the unnavigable Leeds-Liverpool Canal near Burnley, both in normally wet Lancashire. And, in Derbyshire, a 100ft drop in levels at the Ladybower Reservoir brought to the surface the remains of the village of Derwent, which was flooded in 1943.

In a statement in Chinese on its website, CGN said: "A small amount of fuel damage has occurred during the operation of Unit 1, but it is still within the allowable range of technical specifications, and the unit can continue to operate stably. "Combined with the start of construction of the power grid ... we chose this time to shut down for maintenance.“ EDF, along with CGN as a junior partner, is currently building the Hinkley Point C reactor in Somerset and is currently negotiating plans to build a second station, Sizewell C in Suffolk, both of which use the same EPR reactor design. The group therefore carried out the ceremony in a parking lot before picking up the stone and carting it off. Observers had predicted bloodshed as the result of yet another fundamentalist assault on the Al Aqsa mosque compound and its Muslim custodians, who have been in charge of the disputed site for centuries. Nevertheless, police reports as of the Sunday morning said the ceremony took place with a minimum of conflict. Sunday’s ceremony was only the latest manifestation of some Jewish fundamentalists’ desire to prompt the arrival of the “end-time,” marking the end of the world as we know it. Supporters of the Kuumba Centre said they have 'soldiers ready to sleep here' to 'safeguard' the space. Board members who have been running the arts and community centre in Hepburn Road for the past 12 years have been told they have to hand over possession of the building to Bristol City Council today (Thursday, September 28). But more than 100 members of the St Pauls and Stokes Croft communities came together last night, Wednesday, to express support for them, and pledge defiance against what one community activist called ‘an attempted coup by the council’. A legal notice was last night placed on the doors of the Kuumba Centre by the board warning the council that its attempt to take back control of the building was being challenged, and that legal challenge will be presented to the courts in the morning, asking for a pause on whatever action the council has planned to take over the centre. They told the community members that they had paid an annual £100 peppercorn lease and their premises licence fee to Bristol City Council for more than a decade, and never taken any funding from the city council. Since then the Kuumba Centre had evolved into a flexible space with units rented by local artists and creative people, with spaces hired for a wide range of community events. Sister Nwanyi said the centre had originally been given to Bristol’s Rastafari community way back in the mid-1970s, and the current board were running it as volunteers for the whole community. But back in November 2022, the city council sent a letter telling the board that their lease was no longer valid, they weren’t allowed to have a premises licence - which enabled them to stage events later than 11pm - and even worse, they had to vacate the Kuumba Centre. I find it insulting that they want to come here and get us out. As prime minister, he backed military action in Libya which brought down Muammar Gaddafi - but left a near failed state in its wake. The last supervolcanic eruption to occur on planet Earth came 27,000 years ago when Stone Age humans were crafting flints and painting caves. Back then, Taupo, located at the centre of New Zealand's north island, exploded in what was known as the Oruanui eruption. It covered the island in as much as seven inches of ash, with material thought to have been deposited a staggering 620 miles away. What makes supervolcanoes different is their magnitude the Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) which comes in at an eight, meaning at one point in time they erupted more than 1,000 cubic kilometres (240 cubic miles) of material. The US's Yellowstone caldera is one such supervolcano and has for decades seriously concerned volcanologists who fear that humans won't be able to do anything to prevent the fallout from a future eruption. Located in Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park is as beautiful as they come, but beneath its surface hides the huge caldera home to a supervolcano. It has remained dormant for more than 600,000 years, but some scientists fear that the sleeping giant might one day wake. Pressure beneath the park's surface has mounted for thousands of years and is occasionally released by the various geysers which have popped up from the ground. In the event of an eruption, heat rising deep beneath the volcano would make its way upwards and melt the molten rock just below the ground surface, creating a mixture of magma, rock, vapour, carbon dioxide and other gases. A dome will eventually build and cause the ground to rise, and eventually blow its lid, covering neighbouring states Montana and Idaho in volcanic magma and ash. According to HowStuffWorks, the initial blast would "immediately" kill an astonishing 90,000 people — and that's only the start. The blast would send three metres of magma across 1,000 miles of land, preventing rescue teams from reaching certain areas and the blast site itself which would lead to loss of life. Ash sent spiralling into the atmosphere would stop all travel within a few hundred miles radius, similar to what happened when Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010.
