The cost of living crisis is a term that is associated with Europe these days more than other parts of the world, and the country that is in the lead in Europe is the UK.
A series of labor strikes and industrial disputes have occurred in various industries of the UK’s economy as workers walk out over pay and conditions, the most recent one being Junior doctors and Consultants. Keith Pilbeam Professor of International Economics and Finance, City Universityof London and Tony Gosling Historian and Investigative Journalist from Bristol are tonight's guests.

German ambassador applauds Nazi war criminal in Canadian parliament
Johannes Stern
@JSternWSWS
Canada’s parliament applauds Yaroslav Hunka, a former member of the Waffen-SS. Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre is on the far left.
Last week, every member of Canada’s parliament, along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, took part in a standing ovation for Nazi war criminal Yaroslav Hunka, whom the speaker of the Canadian parliament declared a hero.
It has since come to light that among those applauding the Nazi was Sabine Sparwasser, Germany’s ambassador to Canada.
At a press conference on Wednesday, a spokesman for Germany’s Foreign Office confirmed Sparwasser’s participation in the standing ovation for the Nazi, along with diplomats from other ambassadors from the G7 countries.
Seventy-eight years after the fall of the Third Reich, a top diplomatic official of the German government has applauded a member of a criminal organization that played a key role in the Holocaust and in Hitler’s war of extermination against the Soviet Union. This action is the result of a systematic campaign, years in the making, to rehabilitate Nazism as part of the promotion of German militarism at the highest levels of the German state.
In attempting to downplay the significance of Sparwasser’s applause for Hunka, a spokesperson for the Germany foreign office asserted that“that the true identity of Mr. Hunka, namely that he was a volunteer member of the Waffen-SS, was not known to those present, since his participation had not been announced.”
This is totally unconvincing. The appearance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in front of the Canadian parliament was an important political event that was meticulously prepared. Invited guests would have been thoroughly vetted for security reasons. This is especially true for a “guest of honor” like Hunka, who was called by name and officially celebrated.
Even if the German ambassador had not been informed beforehand, she must have known who Hunka was when he was introduced by the now former Speaker of the Canadian Parliament, Anthony Rota.

“We have in the chamber today a Ukrainian war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today, even at his age of 98,” Rota said. “His name is Yaroslav Hunka but I am very proud to say he is from North Bay and from my riding of Nipissing-Timiskaming. He is a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero, and we thank him for all his service.”

Master race? Jewish/Israeli identity politics & antisemitism with Gilad Atzmon & Tony Greenstein
Published on Jul 27, 2018
Master race? Jewish/Israeli identity politics and antisemitism with Gilad Atzmon, Tony Greenstein, Ed Hill and Eddie James
What's the difference between Jews, Jewishness and Judaism?
Is Gilad Atzmon an antisemite?
Is Israel about the Jewish race or Jewish religion, both, or neither?
Margaret Hodge's accusation that Jeremy Corbyn is a racist and an antisemite.
IHRA definition is over 500 words. Are most antisemites Zionists?
There is no evidence Jeremy Corbyn is prejudiced against Jews or any race.
Free speech and the suspension of Ken Livingstone, political interference in UK by Israel? What is the role of MI5?
In the old days antisemites were the people who hated the Jews, now antisemites are the people the Jews hate.
Political correctness insists that the words 'Jew', 'Jewish' or 'Jews' must have special protection despite the fact that the 'Jewish state' is embarking on racist laws and genocide against the Palestinians.
Chief rabbi wrote a strong letter to the Labour party telling them to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism at the same time as Israel is embarking on an extremist racist project.
Do Jews have a disproportionate control of the media? Is making such an accusation like something from the Nazi propaganda ministry or is it a legitimate question?
Are some supporters of Palestine actually working in the interests of the Israeli state? Do Jews operate power or is the Israel lobby really just driven by Western imperialism?
Is Israel actually Jewish at all, or is the entire state project a fraud? Is Israel a settler colonial state, or an entirely new kind of racist state?
Is there a case for Jewish 'race' being innocent? What is Jewishness and what's the phenomenon's relation to 'chosenness'.
Who expelled Tony Greenstein from the Labour party? Who runs which Jewish pressure groups? Is the core of the problem identifying 'politically' as a Jew?
The right of the Labour party welcome's Tony's expulsion because they see Israel as the watchdog of Western colonial interests in the Middle East.
Jewish exceptionalism has many faces, identifying politically as a Jew. Operating in racially oriented bodies, they think in racial terms and they accuse everybody else of being racist.
Zionists claim that all Jews support Israel so Jews have to get together to oppose this lie. Racial vs. political orientated?
Should Israel, as a racist state, have the right to exist?
Ed Hill, Bristol Palestine Solidarity Campaign; Eddie Clarke, ARC bar on Broad Street, Bristol; Gilad Atzmon, Israeli-born writer and musician; Tony Greenstein, expelled from Brighton Labour party over antisemitism arguments.
Presenter and producer Tony Gosling, Engineered by David Bosankoe on the evening of Wednesday 18th July 2018 as the Knesset was passing the potentially genocidal Jewish Nation State Bill and on the day veteran Jewish Labour MP Margaret Hodge allegedly called her leader Jeremy Corbyn a '****ing racist and antisemite'.

But sadly not a lot on Pride's Purge, or the injustice and horrors of Charles' execution, which drove Winstanley to act, and cleared a way for the mercantile classes' British Empire...
https://tlio.org.uk/great-lives-ken-loach-on-gerrard-winstanley-bbcr4-26-sep-2023/
Veteran British film director Ken Loach nominates the 17th century radical pamphleteer and and leader of the Diggers, Gerrard Winstanley.
Born in Wigan in 1609, Winstanley began writing religious pamphlets after his cloth selling business in London went bankrupt and he was forced to move to the country. There his 'heart was filled with sweet thoughts ... that the earth shall be made a common treasury of livelihood to all mankind', for 'the great Creator Reason, made the Earth to be a Common Treasury... for Man had Domination given to him, over the Beasts, Birds and Fishes; but not one word was spoken in the beginning, that one branch of mankind should rule over another."
Winstanley began to dig a nearby wasteland, calling on others - rich and poor -to join him in the digging, which he believed would start a revolution and feed the poor. His ideas were radical, communal, spiritual and deeply challenging. Within a year the Diggers had been aggressively expelled from their site of occupation.
The late Tony Benn called the Diggers, 'the first true socialists', but Winstanley has also been claimed by anarchists and environmentalists.

Winstanley details the story of the 17th-century social reformer and writer Gerrard Winstanley, who, along with a small band of followers known as the Diggers, tried to establish a self-sufficient farming community on common land at St George's Hill ("Diggers' Hill") near Cobham, Surrey. The community was one of the world's first small-scale experiments in socialism or communism, and its ideas were copied elsewhere in England during the time of the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, but it was quickly suppressed, and in the end left only a legacy of ideas to inspire later generations of socialist theorists.
Made by Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo (creators of It Happened Here) and based on the 1961 David Caute novel Comrade Jacob. (wikipedia)

Wiltshire Council dismiss claims of misconduct against councillor Simon Killane
13th October 2015
COMPLAINTS of misconduct made against Wiltshire Council member for Malmesbury Simon Killane have been formally dismissed by the council.
Accusations were made against Cllr Killane by a number of people from Malmesbury over the past three years.
In three of the cases, the complaints have been dropped on the grounds that he was not acting in an official capacity as a councillor at the time of the reported incidents.
The stated reason for dismissal on the fourth complaint was, according to the council, that “the matters complained of would not meet the required threshold to demonstrate that the subject member’s conduct has breached the Code of Conduct.”
Cllr Killane said on his website in response to the complaints being dismissed: “Local residents must be made aware that several malicious and false complaints were made about me over the last year and a half.
“All investigated complaints have been completely dismissed.
“These things were so out of order in the first place, there was no substance whatsoever.
“I believe that the intention of those making these outrageous complaints was to destroy my good reputation as your elected Wiltshire Council representative.
“I wish to make it absolutely clear that I totally support everyone's democratic right to challenge or complain about those holding an elected position.
“However, some people abuse the process for their own reasons and use it to make vexatious complaints.
“It’s been a huge stress for me and my family over the last year and a half, so I’m glad it’s now been resolved.”

Withdrawal of Council Tax Reduction Scheme proposed by Bristol City Council in consultation. Thatcher - Poll Tax. Acorn will help prevent evictions. Tenants campaign group disrupts council meeting to defend proposed cuts to council tax benefit - Mayor Marvin Rees left the podium to chants of ‘shame’ - Tenants campaign group ACORN disrupted a full council meeting inside City Hall to oppose the mayor’s proposals to cut the council tax benefit. - Over 50 members assembled, with 20 standing up inside the chambers to disrupt the meeting, and 30 more setting up office in the foyer to collectively ring and text councillors to ask them to defend the benefit. Mayor Marvin Rees refused to answer calls to meet with ACORN to discuss the proposals, and left the podium to chants of ‘shame’ from the public gallery. Last week, 20 ACORN members disrupted the cabinet meeting five separate times and confronted the mayor directly as he adjourned the meeting and exited the council chambers, demanding that he meet with ACORN members to discuss proposed cuts. Again, the mayor refused to respond. Last month, ACORN launched their campaign to challenge proposals from Bristol Council to cut the city’s council tax reduction scheme, a key lifeline for over 23,000 households in the city on low incomes amidst the current cost of living crisis. This is the second time the Council’s Labour administration have proposed cuts to the support scheme, with ACORN leading a successful campaign against similar proposals in 2017. At a public meeting last month at Docklands Community Centre, over 40 ACORN members met to plan the first steps in a campaign to defend the support scheme. Several councillors have already committed to back the campaign. The council has launched a public consultation which runs until September 25, offering one option for keeping the scheme, and several others where low income families would pay potentially hundreds of pounds more in council tax each year. ACORN says that this does not represent a meaningful choice for Bristolians, and that the council is looking for a ‘rubber stamp’ for a decision already made. ACORN have published guidance encouraging Bristolians to fill out the consultation, advocating for a ‘no cuts’ response. Bristol resident Wesley, who currently relies on the reduction scheme, said: “I get a significant reduction, so it’s about an extra £125 I’d have to pay out, which is going to be difficult. I’ve got two children, a house to heat, food to eat. I really don’t know where I’d find that extra money.” ACORN member William, who receives the council tax benefit, said: “I’ve been homeless before, and this is likely to force me towards that again, it’s really scary.” Fellow member Rachel, who’s receiving the council tax benefit, said: “I’m currently receiving full council tax benefit as I’m registered disabled. If this was to be cut and I’d have to pay it, it would financially cripple me, plunge me into debt and cause serious anxiety.” The council announced that it would save £3 million by cutting the scheme. Yet ACORN members argue that efficiency savings could be found elsewhere.

Putin recognises independence of Ukraine breakaway regions
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/2/21/russia-to-recognise-ukraine-breakaway-region-kremlin-confirms
The Russian president recognised two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as independent entities.
Moscow's move could torpedo a last-minute bid for a summit with US President Joe Published On 21 Feb 202221 Feb 2022
Russian President Vlamidir Putin has signed the presidential decree recognising the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine – a move that will severely ratchet up tensions with the West amid fears of a Russian invasion.
Putin’s announcement comes after a meeting of the presidential Security Council and paves the way for Russia to openly send troops and weapons to the long-running conflict pitting Ukrainian forces against Moscow-backed rebels.
A 2015 peace deal ended large-scale fighting, but violence has simmered and has seen a spike in recent weeks amid the wider crisis.
In a lengthy televised address, Putin described Ukraine as an integral part of Russia’s history and said eastern Ukraine was ancient Russian lands and that he was confident that the Russian people would support his decision.
He said that Ukraine never had a tradition of genuine statehood and complained that post-Soviet Ukraine had wanted everything it could from Moscow without doing anything in return.
Putin announced his decision in phone calls to the leaders of Germany and France, who voiced disappointment, the Kremlin said, and was later shown on state television signing the decree.
Moscow’s move could torpedo a last-minute bid for a summit with US President Joe Biden to prevent Russia from invading Ukraine.
Russia denies any plan to attack its neighbour, but it has threatened unspecified “military-technical” action unless it receives sweeping security guarantees, including a promise that Ukraine will never join NATO.
Televised address
Putin delivered a long, televised address that ended with his announcement, delving into history as far back as the Ottoman empire and as recent as the tensions over NATO’s eastward expansion – a key irritant for Moscow in the present crisis.
“I deem it necessary to make a decision that should have been made a long time ago – to immediately recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic,” Putin said....

EXCLUSIVE interview with Andrey Kochetov, official for an industrial Union in Ukrainian/Russian region of Donbass, on what it's been like since the coup in Maidan, Nazis in Ukraine, and the killing of Zakashenko in 2017. Matthias Rath on Nazis and the EU. Why Is Ukraine's Counteroffensive Destined To Fail? The much-anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive was predicted to break through Russian echelon defenses swiftly, however, it turned into a stalemate. The operation was strategically planned and executed with misguided optimism, as Ukraine's defense strategists underestimated the strength of the adversary. It was launched under the wishful thinking of the Ukrainian government assuming that Russian soldiers would desert their positions and run away from their trenches in the first waves of the counterattack. However, the opposite happened, and Russians are holding their positions, occasionally launching counterattacks, and not allowing Ukraine’s land forces to breach their defenses. Already two months have passed since the launch of the offensive and Ukraine’s military has yet to make significant gains. With the current situation, the highly anticipated counteroffensive is destined to fail. This prompts inquiry into why the counteroffensive has so far failed and will continue to produce unfavorable results for Ukraine and its allies. There are three main rationales for the failure of the counteroffensive. Firstly, the decision to train Ukraine’s soldiers to replicate the combined-arms tactics on the battlefield backfired. Secondly, Ukraine lacked the key component, air supremacy over the battlefield. Thirdly, the operation began too little too late.

Kier Starmer, defence barrister FOC in McLibel case 1997-2007 'No Justice Without Legal Aid'
Aged 35-45 barrister Kier Starmer acted for Dave Morris and Helen Steel, the infamous McLibel two. Now... see www.stopstarmer.co.uk
Source: McLibel: full documentary (Official)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V58kK4r26yk
Starmer became a barrister in 1987 at the Middle Temple, becoming a bencher there in 2009.[4] He served as a legal officer for the campaign group Liberty until 1990.[13] He was a member of Doughty Street Chambers from 1990 onwards, primarily working on human rights issues.[11][13] He has been called to the bar in several Caribbean countries,[23] where he has defended convicts sentenced to the death penalty.[8] He assisted Helen Steel and David Morris in the McLibel case, in the trial and appeal in English courts, also represented them at the European court.[24] The case was seen as a David and Goliath case; a large team of leading lawyers represented McDonald's and the legal bills were estimated at £10m. By contrast Steel and Morris were denied legal aid, they acted on their own with help from lawyers including Starmer.[25]
Starmer was appointed Queen's Counsel on 9 April 2002, aged 39.[26] In the same year, he became joint head of Doughty Street Chambers. Starmer served as a human rights adviser to the Northern Ireland Policing Board and the Association of Chief Police Officers, and was also a member of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's death penalty advisory panel from 2002 to 2008.[4][13] He later cited his work on policing in Northern Ireland as being a key influence on his decision to pursue a political career: "Some of the things I thought that needed to change in police services we achieved more quickly than we achieved in strategic litigation ... I came better to understand how you can change by being inside and getting the trust of people". During this time he also marched and authored legal opinions against the Iraq War.[8] In 2007, he was named "QC of the Year" by Chambers and Partners.[13]
Director of Public Prosecutions
Starmer as Director of Public Prosecutions speaking at Chatham House in 2013
In July 2008, Baroness Scotland of Asthal, Attorney General for England and Wales, named Starmer as the new head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and Director of Public Prosecutions. He took over from Ken Macdonald on 1 November 2008.[13] Macdonald, himself a former defence lawyer, publicly welcomed the appointment.[14] Starmer was considered to be bringing a focus on human rights into the legal system.[13]
Within the first few months of his tenure, Starmer upheld the decision not to prosecute the police officers who had killed Jean Charles de Menezes in a UK High Court appeal lodged by the family.[27] The family then gave up on pursuing charges and nobody has been charged with the death of de Menezes.[28] Later in 2009, when the Conservative Party proposed repealing the Human Rights Act 1998, Starmer defended it as a "clear and basic statement of our citizens' human rights".[29] Liberty and the Liberal Democrats supported Starmer, while the Conservative MP David T. C. Davies suggested he should be dismissed.[30] In the same year, he called for the CPS to modernise by being more open to scrutiny and less reliant on paper files.[31] In 2011, he introduced reforms that included the "first test paperless hearing".[32]

Former top civil servant at Department for Education PM says there was evidence of ‘critical risk to life’ when PM was chancellor
First published on Mon 4 Sep 2023 08.30 BST
Rishi Sunak refused to properly fund a school rebuilding programme when he was chancellor, despite officials presenting evidence that there was “a critical risk to life” from crumbling concrete panels, the Department for Education’s former head civil servant has said.
After the department told Sunak’s Treasury that there was a need to rebuild 300 to 400 schools a year in England, he gave funding for only 100, which was then halved to 50, said Jonathan Slater, the permanent secretary of the department from 2016 to 2020.
Conservative ministers more widely believed building new free schools was a greater funding priority, Slater told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Monday, as pupils returned to many schools in England for the new term.
“For me as an official, it seemed that should have been second to safety,” Slater said. “But politics is about choices. And that was a choice they made.”

Can Pacific survive 1.3m tons of Fukushima radioactive water? IAEA Ignore Health Effects Chris Busby

Is the Release of Radioactive Contaminated Water From the Fukushima Nuclear Site to the Sea Acceptable? Is It Safe?
by Chris Busby
https://www.counterpunch.org/2023/08/25/is-the-release-of-radioactive-contaminated-water-from-the-fukushima-nuclear-site-to-the-sea-acceptable-is-it-safe/
The Japanese government, having apparently run out of storage space for the million tons of radioactively contaminated water have decided to pour it into the sea. This upsets a lot of people, including the governments of China and Korea, who understandably (on a moral level, perhaps) regard this decision as unacceptable. The Japanese (also the entire nuclear industry, plus the International Atomic Energy Agency, and a long list of self-identified experts) collectively say: no problems, the quantities are very small and pose no risk to health, neither to people nor marine life. The water has apparently been treated to remove the radioisotopes that the regulators believe pose the greatest risk, Strontium-90, Caesium-137, and Carbon-14. But to take out the Tritium is too expensive, and so the radioactive water is largely contaminated with large amounts of Tritium Oxide, in the form of Tritiated water HTO.
Tritium is the largest contaminant in terms of radioactivity, disintegrations per second, clicks on a counter, from the operation of all nuclear energy processes. The neutrons, which are central to nuclear energy, produce Tritium by various processes in reactors, and even outside reactors, where the nuclide, a radioactive form of Hydrogen, is formed by adding neutrons to cooling water and various other processes. Tritium is interesting stuff. Its radioactivity is extremely weak: it emits a very short-range beta electron and itself then changes into Helium-3. What? Yes, it is a form of hydrogen, but shoots off an electron and turns into Helium-3. But we are mostly made of hydrogen, you say. Just So.
In terms of radioactivity, because the decay electron is so weak, the method that the risk agencies use to quantify radiation effects has classed Tritium as almost a non-event, in terms of health effects. This is most convenient for the nuclear industry, as it means that the exposure limits for Tritium (in terms of Becquerels per litre) are truly enormous, when compared with other radioactive waste. Tritium has a 12-year half life, so it hangs about. And since all life depends on water, and indeed all life mostly is water, hydrogen and oxygen, introducing radioactive water into the environment might seem to be a bad idea.
But No! The low beta energy of Tritium allows the regulators to argue that the releases of huge amounts to the sea and rivers is safe. But the regulators are wrong. The system of analysis using the concept of “Absorbed Dose” is unscientific, dishonest and at the origin of a huge historic public health scandal that has caused hundreds of millions of deaths from cancer due to badly regulated releases of certain specific contaminants, and this includes Tritium, Carbon-14, Uranium (as particles) and certain other substances produced by nuclear processes. Many years ago, the regulator BEIR committee in USA under Prof Karl Z Morgan tried to change the limits for Tritium, but he was overruled because it would make the operation of nuclear power very difficult. He wrote about this in his book The Angry Genie. He was convinced that Tritium was a serious hazard.
So, lets look a bit closer at the quantities. The water in the tanks contains about 1500Bq/litre. A Becquerel is one decay per second. A litre of this water would produce 1500 clicks on a suitable measuring instrument (not a Geiger Counter, you won’t measure this stuff with a Geiger counter). Does that sound a lot? Would you drink this water? Even if the IAEA say it’s OK? Would They?
The total amount to be released is 1.3 million tons. Or we are told, 22 TeraBecquerel. That is 22,000,000,000,000Bq. Sounds a lot. It is a lot. But of course, the Pacific Ocean is large, and hopefully it will just go away through dilution. And it seems 22TBq, is small compared with the quantities released by the nuclear reprocessing plants in Europe. Sellafield in the UK pumped out 432 TBq a year (20 times more) to the Irish Sea and La Hague in France 10,000TBq/y (450 times). So that’s OK then. The experts say (and you can Google them on the Science Media Centre), or you can believe the IAEA, or the Japanese, that this stuff has never shown any health effects in places where it is poured into the sea.

A multiparty delegation of six Australian politicians will travel to the United States to push for an end to the pursuit of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
The US has pushed to extradite Julian Assange, who is an Australian citizen, after his website WikiLeaks published thousands of US documents in 2010, which included a cache of military and diplomatic files, some of which were classified.
Mr Assange has been detained in Britain’s Belmarsh Prison for the last four years and is in the midst of appealing the United Kingdom’s decision to agree to US extradition.
The cross-party group, including former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, revealed their intention to the press in Canberra on Tuesday.
