What is willpower? Today we’re in for such a special treat. Sharon Lipinski is an amazing Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist, and she teaches fantastic willpower techniques to transform our life one step at a time. It can rock our world.
Leaving A Job
Sharon Lipinski had a high-pressure job and started having panic attacks. She lived with that for about a year before quitting. Warning bells started going off in her head, and Lipinski realized she needed to make a change.
Lipinski shut down her practice, without knowing what she was going to do next. So, she spent the next two years “discovering” herself. She went on spiritual retreats and meditation retreats.
Thanksgiving Dinner
Lipinski had this idea that spending a month alone by the ocean would help her figure out what she wanted to do with her life, so she rented a house in Newport, Oregon for the entire month of November.
She would walk her dogs past the corner convenience store and chat with an older man who was living as a caretaker. The store was closed because there weren’t enough tourists in November, and the man was always alone.
Lipinski and the man would chat for a few minutes, and she learned a little about him and his story.
Lipinski learned that he was a recovering drug addict whose family no longer spoke to him. She knew he would be alone for Thanksgiving, so Lipinski invited him to spend Thanksgiving dinner with her at a Chinese restaurant.
Lipinski hoped the man would say no, so she could feel good for asking but wouldn’t have to do it. But he said yes, so Lipinski picked him up and she drove into town for dinner.
When Lipinski looked across the table, she didn’t see a man she barely knew. She saw a human being who rarely had an opportunity to talk with someone who cared about him and what was important to him.

Rid yourself of excuses. Excuses are only an attempt to feel ok about not accomplishing something. Whenever an excuse comes up like "I don't have time to exercise today," instead say to yourself "how can I find time to workout today?" This will force your brain to create solutions."

This Learn True Health episode features Dr. Heidi Semanie, who, after the following experience, obtained her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University. She also has a B.S. in Biological Science with minor degrees in English and Anthropology.
No level of education, no number of degrees could have prepared her for her extremely challenging three months as a paramedic in the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She describes the magnitude of work, of need, of the devastation she saw.
It was like a war zone with looting and police escorts. Imagine seeing a bathtub in a tree, houses piled on top of each other, dead bodies that you must remove from the raging river.

Mind-Body Connection
Ashley’s guest today is Patti Davis, a licensed mental health counselor. She uses adventure therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical family systems, Gestalt and play therapy with people of all ages to help them overcome issues such as grief, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression and more. Patti is an expert in emotional health and the mind-body connection. Her path to her current calling took years but she is grateful for the experiences she had before going to graduate school in counselling, because in her maturity and insight she is able to witness what people are going through with compassion.
Among older people therapy is still seen as shameful and a last resort, but to the younger generation, seeing a counselor is becoming more and more acceptable. Patti likes to see therapy as preventive, a mental and emotional exercise to keep the mind and emotions healthy, just as physical exercise keeps the body healthy. Everyone goes to the dentist, everyone goes to the optometrist, and everyone could benefit from going to a mental health counselor. When depression is lifted we become more active and social.
Ashley and Patti Davis discuss therapy for families and children, including DBT, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for certain populations.

Ashley’s guest today is Roberta Fernandez, a certified hypnotist. She uses hypnotherapy and NLP to help her clients overcome issues such as chronic pain, surgery recovery, smoking cessation and reducing hunger during dieting.
Roberta knew she wanted to help others with hypnosis after she was able to eliminate her arthritis pain completely, and again when she was able to recover from a double knee replacement surgery, using only self-hypnosis to manage the pain.
She calculated that with the help of self-hypnosis as her way of pain elimination she was able to avoid taking over 180 capsules of oxycodone and prevent pain medication addiction and side-effects!
“There are NO side-effects with hypnosis!” Roberta shares.

Take a deep belly breath.
Hold it in for two seconds.
Think your positive thought to yourself
Count backwards from 5 to 1 as you exhale, going from loud to soft, in your mind or aloud.
Repeat four more times. Each time focusing on your positive thought.
For pain removal / management consider the thought “Total Comfort”
For hunger cessation consider “Full and satisfied”
And to relax, you can simply think “totally relaxed”

Healing Emotional Eating
Hello, True Health Seekers! One thing we're not talking about today is food. Rather, we're going to talk about healing beyond food.
Personally, I feel like my audience is a lot like me. We've tried everything. We've been on every diet, whether it be soy free or vegan. For some of us, we swung from one side of the spectrum to the other when it comes to diet and emotional eating. And yet we still can't find the missing pieces to healing.
This is where we really need to go within and see what's going on. To discover if there are some components that have nothing to do with food and that can heal my body.
how to stop emotional eating
The Wake-up Call
Holistic Nutrition Expert and Transformation Coach, Shana Ekedal is an educator and a trailblazer in the area of mind, body, and spirit wellness. At the tender age of 10, her parents divorced. She started emotional eating, basically having an unhealthy lifestyle.
"The real wake-up call happened when I was diagnosed with skin cancer on the bridge of my nose," says Ekedal. "Oftentimes we don't realize things until we have a physical ailment going on."
Ekedal eventually started the road to healing. She did a self-evaluation which questioned why she was abusing her body with emotional eating.
Taking The First Step
"Most of the time, we want to know what the end result is. It really made me trust in making the first step and then more will reveal itself," she shares.
I totally agree with Ekedal. We just have to be open to the guidance and opportunity that is coming our way. We should set our minds to eat better. If we do, it consequently becomes this gateway where all these other things are opening up. Some gateways to healing our body are yoga, meditation, cycling class, going vegan and many more.
How To Stop Emotional Eating
Ekedal's journey to healing took her seven years. This was because she tried a lot of things that didn't work. Or the stuff that wasn't working were the stuff she didn't need. Eventually, she resolved to help others as well.
I believe that when you're a healer, you're like a sales manager. You end up doing what you love doing which is helping people. When you think about, say for example---real estate, that is a huge transition in someone else's life.

At age 6 I saw my first Naturopathic Doctor and through my whole youth, my family and I were gluten and dairy free, long before it was cool, or easy.

Your Challenge:
Give yourself a health/energy grade from 1 – 10
Drink 1/3 of your body weight in ounces of water every day. If you weigh 150 lbs, drink 50 ounces of water. Add another 8 ozs for every cup of coffee, glass of wine, juice, soda, etc. Follow this routine for 2 weeks, and then give yourself a new grade as to how you feel. Dr. Molly predicts a marked improvement!

Treadmill Desk - Rob Jacobs & Ashley James - #116
Today's episode tackles about the Unsit Treadmill Desk and the benefits of walking. http://learntruehealth.com/treadmill-desk/
Our guest for today is a fitness expert and the inventor of the revolutionary Treadmill Desk, Rob Jacobs.
The purpose of creating the machine is to prevent the ill health effects and common office lifestyle of prolonged sitting down. He believes that thru the Unsit Treadmill Desk, he can motivate people to move while working and help break the unhealthy habits of sitting too much. But, if one can not get a treadmill desk, then “set the alarm to get up and move every 20 minutes,” says Rob.
“Sitting around on the job is something that’s gonna go away for a variety of reasons, health reasons, fitness reasons, productivity reasons and creativity reasons. I find it more creative and I come up with ideas more when I wind up and walking around.” – Rob Jacobs
Rob believes that our body is designed to move around. If the body is constantly at rest and do not move may lead to these physiological risks:
1. Bottom of the feet – Serves as a “switch”. When we stand up it sends a signal to the brain that there’s a threat or there are opportunities. If we turned that switch “off” by sitting down too much, it sends a lot of functions in the brain that are meant for solving problems, to rest, or asleep. Calories burned start to drop lower to 1 calorie a minute because our body is at rest.
2. Lower limbs – When we are stuck in one right angle contraption, it puts pressure on the big muscles in the body impeding blood circulation in the lower limbs leading to all tingling pain.
3. Spine– We’re supposed to have a nice “S” form on our backs. But when we sit our spine is curving in a wrong direction. It is curved the other way squishing our discs backwards putting pressure on the nerves that later on leads to sciatic nerve pain.
4. Shoulder and Neck: Too much sitting causes neck infringements and discomfort
5. Blood Sugar – When our calories burned drop down to zero, we start to feel sleepy and loses energy. Normally, people grab caffeine and sugar to stay awake instead of walking and moving. In years of doing this, could lead to inflammation of pancreas or diabetes.

Dr. Megan Saunders returns to Learn True Health to discuss a very important part of our health: Sleep. “Sleep is not a luxury, it is a requirement.” The four foundations of health are good nutrition, a healthy emotional state (feeling fulfilled), exercising the body, and getting good sleep.
Sometimes stress gets the better of you and keeps you awake. Dr. Megan says you need to process the stress of anger or depression in a way that’s appropriate.
It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get angry about something, but if it’s an emotion that you are unable to process and it’s keeping you up at night, then that should be addressed.

We could be eating right, exercising and eating supplements. But if we're not plugging into our spiritual health or not finding out our purpose is in life it is useless. What's the point in life if we're not living our path?

How An Aussie End Up in Japan
Leigh Martinuzzi had an amazing journey before he settled in Japan. Hence, he left a corporate life to help people find their life purpose.
"I lived in Japan 10 years ago when I was single and no kids. Two Christmases ago, we thought of going on to explore Japan because I had connections here. It was an easy decision and we moved to Japan within a few months," said Martinuzzi.
Comfortably adjusted by now, he has no regrets. "Consequently, we're living the life. And I love the experience and adventure. Just to have the ability to do allows me to grow. Since we also wanted the kids to grow up in a new culture," shares Martinuzzi.
Becoming A Coach
Martinuzzi realized a corporate life was not for him.
"I felt that disconnect and I was introduced to a podcast. First of all, outside work, I was doing things that didn't add value to my life. Therefore, I brought back writing back into my life," Martinuzzi said.
He then realized his life purpose. Hence, he has his own podcast to share what he has learned to help other people do the same.
Finding Your Life Purpose: The Hidden Why
Martinuzzi says if we don't express ourselves and really let out what we're learning, we miss out on a big part of life. Furthermore, expression is one of the keys to great meaning.
And it makes so much sense. Just recently, Easter just happened and my friend invited me to her church service. It was totally out of my norm because I was raised Anglican. Because I wasn't used to a liberal and uplifting service. Yet the minister said something that hit me hard.
He was talking about redemption. He said if there's something you really don't want, like being homeless or depressed, take that as your purpose to help people in that situation you don't want to be in. I was thinking about charities for children after that. Most noteworthy, I felt a calling.
This is the perfect question to ask ourselves---What is it that I hate to suffer from? How can I help others not suffer from it?

Learn True Health is honored to present Jennifer Saltzman, popular Pilates instructor, for a second time. In this Episode Ashley and Jennifer discuss the importance of spiritual health. Think about community and realize we have so much to give. Rise to the occasion. Give to others, receive gratefully from others, and think about something other than “me.” We are all one.
The book Commitment to Love by Maureen Moss had a very positive effect on Jennifer’s life. It is about the spirit, about perspective, laughter, challenges and trials. When Jennifer was in her 20’s and had just finished her Pilates training, she became very ill. She had pain in her gut, couldn’t walk, was bedridden and on welfare. She was in a spiritual vacuum. Listen to her agonizing description of her life at that time and be prepared for the uplifting moment that changed her life forever.
Prayer defines Jennifer’s life. When she was in great pain she prayed “God, please do not let any of this suffering be in vain. Let me be used to bring health and well-being to others.”
She says this prayer has been answered on many levels, and she is grateful now that Learn True Health with its listener base is helping her share her experience and spirituality with a broad and receptive audience.

Yogic Meditation
Forrest Knutson is an expert teacher (and still a student) of yogic meditation. He left the safety of the ashram to pursue a self-reliant life as a yogi householder.
Through a lifetime of meditation and study Forrest observed key elements of meditation and simplified them so that anyone who applied themselves could learn and achieve a successful meditative state.
Today Forrest teaches through his books and online through video training available in the Learn True Health’s membership.
Meditation is a practice where an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or for the mind to simply acknowledge its content without becoming identified with that content, or as an end in itself.
The term meditation refers to a broad variety of practices that includes techniques designed to promote relaxation, build internal energy or life force (qi, ki, prana, etc.) and develop compassion, love, patience, generosity and forgiveness. A particularly ambitious form of meditation aims at effortlessly sustained single-pointed concentration meant to enable its practitioner to enjoy an indestructible sense of well-being while engaging in any life activity.
The word meditation carries different meanings in different contexts. Meditation has been practiced since antiquity as a component of numerous religious traditions and beliefs. Meditation often involves an internal effort to self-regulate the mind in some way. Meditation is often used to clear the mind and ease many health concerns, such as high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. It may be done sitting, or in an active way—for instance, Buddhist monks involve awareness in their day-to-day activities as a form of mind-training.

Dr. Heidi Semanie is back on the show to teach us things we didn’t know about vitamin D! Every major aspect of your health is influenced by D.
It’s common knowledge that vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin because our body uses the sunshine to make it. And in the winter, we can suffer from Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder (S.A.D.), or low D levels, which are linked to depression.
Dr. Heidi explains that our body needs D to utilize Calcium, a major mineral our bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues need to function! So, without vitamin D, we cannot healthfully use calcium!
