"Heart, Brain Disorders Linked to COVID-19 Vaccines, Global Study Finds"
A recent study published in the journal Vaccine has linked COVID-19 vaccines to 13 rare medical conditions, including heart, brain, and blood disorders. The study, conducted by researchers from the Global Vaccine Data Network, analyzed data from 99 million vaccinated individuals across eight countries.
The study found that certain mRNA vaccines, such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, were associated with an increased risk of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle. The highest rate of myocarditis was observed after the second dose of the Moderna vaccine.
Additionally, the study reported an increased risk of pericarditis, another heart condition, in individuals who received the third dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine, as well as in recipients of Moderna's first and fourth doses.
The study also found a greater risk of developing Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder, among those who took the AstraZeneca shots, as well as an increased risk of blood clots.
Despite these findings, experts emphasize that the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweigh the risks. They note that the likelihood of experiencing these adverse events is much higher after contracting COVID-19 than after receiving the vaccine.
Separately, a study conducted by Christian Medical College in Vellore, India, during the first wave of the pandemic found that individuals who survived COVID-19 in India experienced more severe lung and respiratory problems compared to their counterparts in Europe and China. The study highlighted the presence of post-COVID-19 residual lung damage in a large Indian cohort, leading to significant impairment of lung function, quality of life, and effort tolerance.

"Gaza's Struggle for Survival: Humanitarian Aid in Critical Demand"
The situation in Gaza is dire, with recent attacks causing significant harm. A Médecins Sans Frontières shelter was shelled, injuring staff and killing family members. The World Health Organization assisted in treating the injured, including children with burns, and helped evacuate patients from Nasser Hospital to field hospitals in Rafah.
There are urgent warnings about the public health crisis in Gaza, with most people lacking access to clean water and essential services due to damaged infrastructure and import constraints. Despite efforts to improve the situation, challenges persist, including restrictions on aid distribution and the movement of personnel.
Recent events at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis have further exacerbated the crisis. Israeli forces raided the hospital, claiming militants were hiding there. This led to power outages and a lack of oxygen supply, resulting in the deaths of intensive care patients. The hospital, under siege, struggled to provide care, with pregnant women giving birth in difficult conditions.
The incursion into Nasser Hospital has raised concerns about the safety of patients, medical workers, and displaced Palestinians seeking shelter there. There are fears that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza could escalate if the situation continues to deteriorate.

"Defence Boost: Sukhoi-30 MKI Fleet's Rs 60,000 Crore Makeover Approved!"
India's Sukhoi-30 MKI fleet is set for a massive upgrade, with a budget of Rs 60,000 crore approved by the Defence Ministry. The upgrade will include the installation of indigenous equipment to enhance the fighter jets' capabilities, such as improved radar systems, tracking devices, and the ability to strike targets from longer distances.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will lead the project, which will also involve collaboration with the private sector in India. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will provide support for the upgrade, with most components sourced from private companies.
The upgrade project is divided into two phases, with the first focusing on installing new avionics and radars, and the second on enhancing the flight control systems. The goal is to replace several Russian-origin systems in Indian fighter jets with indigenous alternatives, strengthening the aircraft's combat capabilities.
The upgrades will include a new Electronic Warfare System to jam incoming threats, as well as new Infra Red Search and Track systems to enhance air-to-air and air-to-ground targeting capabilities. Approximately 90 fighters will undergo upgrades in the first batch, with the integration of new systems scheduled to begin this year.
The Sukhoi-30 MKI fleet is crucial to the Indian Air Force, and these upgrades are seen as a significant step towards modernizing India's defence capabilities. Additionally, the upgrades present a potential export market, as several other countries operate similar aircraft.

"COVID-19 Impact: Indians Face Prolonged Lung Damage, Study Finds
A recent study conducted by Christian Medical College, Vellore, has highlighted that Indians experience more lung damage post-COVID-19 infection compared to Europeans and Chinese. The study analyzed 207 individuals after two months of recovery from the infection, focusing on lung function tests, six-minute walks, blood tests, and quality of life assessments. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of the Indian population suffered from persisting symptoms and lung function impairment. Despite the pandemic receding, the risk of post-complications remains a concern. The study, published in the Global Health Journal, showed that oxygen transfer from air to the bloodstream was affected by 44%, lung inflation ability by 35%, and air movement in and out of the lungs by 8.3%. Dr. Ishwar Gilada, an infectious disease expert, highlighted that COVID-19 has left scars on the lungs, with even mild cases showing long-term symptoms. Another study published in the journal Radiology indicated that even after two years of COVID-19, patients exhibited persistent lung abnormalities, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and care for recovered individuals.

ISRO has successfully brought down its Cartosat-2 satellite, launched 17 years ago, to Earth's atmosphere.
The satellite re-entered the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean, either burning up or its remnants falling into the sea.
Originally expected to take 30 years to de-orbit naturally, ISRO used leftover fuel to lower its perigee for safe disposal, following international guidelines on space debris.
This exercise also provided an opportunity to assess indigenous tracking capabilities, with the satellite reaching about 130 km altitude before demise.
This successful de-orbiting represents a significant step for ISRO in ensuring long-term sustainability of outer space activities.

China's High-Speed Maglev Train Could Rival Air Travel, Says CASIC
China's Maglev Train Projected to Reach Speeds of 1,000 km/hr
China's China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) has broken its own speed record with a new magnetically levitated (maglev) train that reached speeds surpassing 623 kilometers per hour (387 miles per hour) during tests in a 2 km long low-vacuum tube. While the exact speed achieved remains classified, CASIC has hailed the test as a significant breakthrough, marking the first time the ultra-fast hyperloop train achieved stable levitation in such conditions.
The maglev train relies on magnetism to propel itself forward and levitate above the tracks. Traveling through a specially designed low-vacuum tube further enhances its speed potential. CASIC stated that the recent test not only set a speed record but also validated key technologies, demonstrating their successful integration. The project aims for a designed speed of up to 1,000 km/hr, surpassing commercial aviation speeds.
The successful test indicates progress in integrating aerospace and terrestrial rail transport technologies. The system's tube and track interactions, as well as its movement systems and safety controls, performed as expected, enhancing the system's technical maturity. These advancements lay a solid foundation for future higher-speed tests and the construction of a national-level transport network.
