How To Make Paper Mache Clay With Newspaper (No TP!)
A lot of people want to know if you can use recycled paper instead of toilet paper to make paper mache clay. So in this video, I have some tips on how to make paper mache clay with newspaper and other recycled papers.
I forgot to mention in the video that you can also use traditional paper strips and paste for all of the projects on my channel instead of paper mache clay. That way, you don't have to run to the store to buy anything, because you probably already have all the needed materials in the house already.

Painting The Basset Hound
I finally finished the Basset Hound. I was a little worried about painting him, to be honest. I really liked the way the hound was turning out and I didn't want to give myself a chance to mess him up. (Am I the only one with that kind of self-doubt? Yeah, probably not. 🐶 )
I wanted a final painting that didn't show any brush marks. I wanted the forms to be the most important part of the project, and not the painting. I managed to do that by using a stencil brush and dabbing on the final coats of color on the red and black parts, and I really like the way it turned out. It looks velvety and soft.

DIY Gnome Update - What Worked, and What Didn't
My DIY Gnome has been outside in Minnesota all winter, and after three months it's still doing just fine. The waterproof grout I used (instead of the paper mache I use for indoor sculptures) is still hard as a rock. The artists' paint probably wasn't what I should have used, but it isn't showing any damage yet, either. But the varnish I used got really weird.
You'll find the free pattern for the gnome here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/gnome

DIY Paper Mache Dog - the Basset Hound, Part 6
My DIY Paper Mache Dog - the Basset hound - is almost finished. In this video you can see how I added a layer of paper mache clay over the foil armature, added some wrinkles, and made the toes longer (to fix a boo-boo in the armature). Then I show you a new tool for removing unwanted bumps on the dried paper mache, and a new way to brush on a layer or two of thinned paper mache clay to make a smoother finish.

Is Paper Mache Clay Waterproof?
Is paper mache clay waterproof? This is the most common question I receive - sometimes as often as two or three times a day. And I've been asked that question ever since I posted my paper mache clay recipe on YouTube ten years ago.
So I finally decided to do a video just to answer this question. I've done a lot of experiments in waterproofing pape rmache clay, and you can see them on my channel. I won't link to them, though, because none of my experiments worked.
However, there are probably more items made with paper mache clay to be used outside than inside, because we need inexpensive materials when we want a temporary sculpture. Masks, Halloween yard art, parade floats - all made with paper mache.
In this video I discuss how that can work, even though the PM clay itself is not waterproof. And I'll also tell you about a variation of the original recipe that makes the clay waterproof without the need for varnish or Flex Seal to protect it.

Painting the Zazu Mask for the Lion King Jr.
I finished the Zazu headdress mask pattern, and really had fun painting it. In this video I show you how it was done, with just four colors.
I used a Tanzanian Red Billed Hornbill for the model. There are lots of different hornbills, (the bird that Zazu was based on in the Lion King movies). I picked this particular species because I really like the big black eye spot. It looks very dramatic, and will make a big impression on stage.

Paper Mache Basset Hound Part 5, the Face Armature
This is Part 5 of a series for making a paper mache dog - a Basset Hound. I added the face to the armature with aluminum foil. Unfortunately, it's hard to see the shapes of the crumpled foil on the video, but it will be a lot easier when we start adding the paper mache clay in the next video.

Newspaper and masking tape, or aluminum foil and a hot glue gun. I used foil this time because it's a lot easier when working on small bits like toes - but you can also use paper and masking tape, along with a little bit of patience.
We're using the same methods in this project that I used in my book Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay, but in that book I don't use any foil at all. All the projects are made with cardboard patterns, crumpled paper and masking tape, and paper mache clay.

Hyena Mask Pattern for the Lion King Play
My new hyena mask is easy to customize, so each member of the pack will look different. I started with a design with wide open eyes and a closed mouth, and then created a few more pieces so you can make an open-mouthed hyena mask, too. I don't usually make animal sculptures with their teeth showing, because I scare easily, but I really like the way this hyena came out.

Sculpt A Baby Orangutan Face
This baby orangutan face was made almost the same way that I made sculptures when I was still in grade school. And yes, I've been messing around with paper mache that long. 😀
This project was inspired by the mamma orangutan that I made at least ten years ago. It was one of the first projects that I posted on my website, and it's still one of the most popular posts because it's so easy. You can see how I did it, with crumpled paper and masking tape instead of foil, here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-mask
I did made a few changes this time. I didn't have a cotton mop, so I made the baby orangutan's hair with heavy brown paper. And I used crumpled foil instead of paper to fill out the forms because I wanted to try out my new hot glue gun.

Make a Mandrill Mask - Rafiki Mask for the Lion King Play
This headdress-style Mandrill mask was made for the character of Rafiki in the Lion King play. The pattern is easy to put together, as you can see in the video. It's also really fun to paint. Blue? Bright red? Yes - and I also used a little stone-textured spray paint to finish this mask. (This creature really stands out in a crowd!)

Make a DIY Gnome - Part 2
We started this DIY gnome with the foil armature. You can find that video here: https://youtu.be/xXSsRo59Kwo
In Part 2 we finish the gnome. He gets some masking tape to cover the foil, some plaster cloth for the first part of his hard coat, and some Mapai Ultracolor grout. Then his face is sculpted with Magic Sculpt epoxy clay, and he's painted.
A lot of people have already started their gnomes. You can download the free pattern here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/gnome

Make a DIY Gnome - the Armature
UPDATE: The gnome is now finished, and you can see how he came out here: https://youtu.be/ZY4X_pyVFYM
In this video, the DIY gnome isn't finished yet - but the armature is now ready for its final 'skin.' I'm going to use the same hard coat that I used in my last video, but you can use paper mache or paper mache clay, if you'd like your gnome to live inside.
If you want to use my pattern, you can find a link to the PDF on this page: https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/gnome
This little fellow will be about 18" tall when he's finished. The inspiration for his design is the wonderful book Gnomes by Wil Huygen and Rein Poortvliet. I love that book, and I'm glad my little gnome gave me an excuse to go back and look at the lovely drawings again. Be sure to look for it at your local library.
The pumpkin I made last month is holding up really well, but I can't leave him out all year (that would be weird). Fortunately, gnomes don't have a special holiday, so they can stay outside as long as they want to.
In case you missed that video, I'm trying to find a way to make waterproof outdoor sculptures that use the same skills we already use for paper mache. I'll coat my gnome with the same products that I used for the pumpkin, and we'll see if he can stand up to a whole year of Minnesota weather.

DIY Halloween Pumpkin Made with Plaster Cloth
This DIY Halloween Pumpkin is another one of my experiments. This time, I'm trying to find a way to make lightweight weatherproof sculptures that can stay outside for long periods of time. In fact, much longer than just the Halloween season. In the next three weeks we'll see if this combination of products has any promise for permanent yard sculptures.
One thing I know already - it was easy and fun. We'll keep our fingers crossed when it starts to rain or snow in the next few weeks.
I was inspired by the Hollywood Haunters video about hard-coating a foam pumpkin with Flex Bond: https://youtu.be/w3r67JXmCY0
To see how Jay, from Unhinged Productions, makes hollow pumpkins with paper mache clay: https://youtu.be/vyD8xCL--xU
And to see his video about the effects of weather on "waterproofed" paper mache: https://youtu.be/lpMcmtCVd8I
Because it was an experiment, I didn't spend a lot of time designing this pumpkin's face, but he's goofy and happy - and I think the neighbor's kids will like him.
If you make this pumpkin (or any other experiment in weatherproof outdoor sculpture) please let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Faux Stone Sculpture Made with DIY Air Dry Clay
This faux stone sculpture was made with my DIY air dry clay recipe, plaster cloth, and insulation foam. It's a lightweight reproduction of a Mayan monkey hacha, found in Veracruz, Mexico.
For this project the air dry clay recipe was altered, just slightly, by using brown paper instead of toilet paper in the mix. Everything else, including all gram measurements, was the same as the original recipe. You can find the recipe here: https://youtu.be/YOiovGN-yHA
The silicone texture stamp video is here: https://youtu.be/jvNBi2t54gc
If you haven't seen the video that shows you how to make a pattern for a sculpture using the grid system, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/ywViyxgbPUg
You could use my paper mache clay recipe instead of the grout to seal the foam. To see how that looks on a foam giraffe sculpture, see this guest post on my blog: https://bit.ly/2VF2Wo0
You can find patterns for the wall sculptures and masks behind me in the videos here, including the new four-headdress set for the Lion King play: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns

Diy Silicone Mold Texture Stamps for Clay
Use this cheap DIY silicone mold material to create texture stamps for clay, air dry clay, or epoxy clay. But keep the windows open because this stuff stinks!
My first experiment used my own recipe for air dry clay. It should also work very well with Apoxie Sculpt or any other epoxy clay, and might work with polymer clay.
Make sure you watch the King of Random's video, too. "How To Make "Proto-Putty" (Modified Oogoo)": https://youtu.be/7fwytA5r2Mw
If you notice anything in his video that I missed, please let me know in the comment section below.
In case you're wondering, the patterns for all the animal sculptures on the wall behind me in the video can be found here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
If you use the DIY texture stamps with any of those patterns, I'd really like to see how your sculpture comes out. Post a photo on the Daily Sculptors page of my site: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page

Food coloring: https://amzn.to/2zJ4pzE (or just get some at your local grocery store)
Silicone #1 caulk: https://amzn.to/2UuPTFs (or try your local hardware store. My local store didn't have the right kind so I had to order it)
Latex-free gloves: https://amzn.to/2UqY3yj
Wood craft sticks: https://amzn.to/2ZNzz3o
Paper bowls from the grocery store.
Fake Fur - from Jo-Ann Fabric Store. Also be sure to check your local thrift store for some fake fur on collars or stuffed animals. They might have fake leather in the wallet section that would be fun to use, too.

How To Make Air Dry Clay - Silky-Smooth DIY Recipe
How to make air dry clay - ever since I came out with this recipe for "silky-smooth" air dry clay, it's become one of the most popular art recipes on my website. This is not a recipe for kids (it's not edible). Artists use this material to create beautiful, strong, long-lasting sculptures.
If you've used the silky-smooth air dry clay yourself, you may have some ideas for using it that I haven't thought of yet, so please put them in the comment section below. I also want to thank Eileen, Rex and Pia for contributing their ideas for this new video.
I know I'll get a couple of questions, so I'll answer them here:
Is this recipe waterproof? No.
Do you have to use the drywall joint compound? Yes. If you don't want to use it, you'll need to find another recipe. The joint compound combined with the PVA glue is the real magic behind this recipe and the paper mache clay recipe. It makes the mixture dry very hard and strong.

Cooked Flour And Water Paste - and When to Use It
This is how I make cooked flour and water paste for paper mache. I normally use the raw paste recipe when I use paper strips and paste, but there are times when it's better to use this cooked paste, instead. In this video I show you when it's worth the trouble.
