Why I Use Patterns to Make Paper Mache Animal Sculptures
I created a video for our newer members who haven't yet had a chance to make an animal sculpture with a pattern inside. If you're new to my channel, you might be wondering why I keep talking about "patterns" in all my posts and projects. In this video I'll tell you how I discovered the idea for using patterns, and I explain why they make sculpting animals so much easier.
Be sure to take a look at that life-sized giraffe I mentioned in the video: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/life-sized-paper-mache-giraffe
And for another guest post by someone who created his own patterns, see this one by Rex Winn (hint - his project would make a wonderful gift): https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/make-a-calf-piggy-bank
You can find my book Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay here: http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
And the book 3-D Wizardry here: https://amzn.to/2OIKDKD (amazon links)
And you'll find my premium patterns at https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
Now go make something, and have fun!

How Fast Does Paper Mache Dry?
This is one of the most common questions I've received in the ten years my blog has been online - how long does it take paper mache to dry? As you'll see in the video, the answer isn't quite as easy as we might like, but there are definitely things we can do to speed up the drying time.
By the way, to celebrate my blog being online for 10 whole years, I create a new downloadable guide: "The 5 Best Recipes for Paper Mache." If you don't have it yet, you can get it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/lp-5-paper-mache-recipes

Lion Mask With Raffia Mane

(scroll down to the video).
The raffia table skirt I bought: https://amzn.to/2lKezt3
I hope you can see that I took more time to paint this lion mask than I did on the first one. It's the same pattern, but they look really different. I used the same colors I used before, but I also used much smaller brushes and many more layers. It was painted just like I painted the wolf mask, as a matter of fact, using a photo I found online as the model because the lion in the photo had a mane the same color as the raffia I wanted to use for my lion's mane. I just now found a very inspiring video showing a very colorful lion being painted by a mom and her toddler - it sounds crazy, but it worked really well. (And a lion painted that way could have a really crazy mane, too - maybe strips of multi-colored ribbon or fabric. See it here if you want to go a little wild with your own lion mask: https://youtu.be/t0TFnJ8eg0E

Armature For Dynamic Animal Sculpture
This is an advanced method for creating a pattern for the armature for an animal sculpture. Unlike the cardboard patterns I normally use, this one can be twisted along the spine to create a sculpture in a realistic, dynamic posture. You can also bend the leg patterns at the joints, but there's still a cardboard pattern that prevents the 'bones' from bending in the wrong place.
This method should only be used if you're already familiar with using a pattern inside an animal sculpture, and if you're comfortable with the idea of making a pattern of your own based on a photo or sketch.
You can find the book I mentioned, Make Animal Sculptures With Paper Mache, here: http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
Some of the projects on my sculpture pattern page also use a cardboard pattern on the inside. You can see them here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
And you can find that post about making a poseable hand armature here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/poseable-hand-armature-for-paper-mache-clay
The cardboard patterns are great for most animal sculptures, but if the spine needs to bend, like the cougar pattern in the video or a puppy playing on his back, this new foil pattern works better. The foil can be twisted and turned in a way that cardboard can't. You'll still want to use a lot of photo references when you make your pattern and when you fill out the forms, so your final sculpture will be realistic.
If you make a new pattern using this new method, let us know what you think.

Casting Concrete Fast Faces with Rebound 25 Brush-on Mold

If you read my book you already know that I made my little bulldog by following suggestions I found in a lump of clay. The part of his face that I didn't change at all was the mouth and muzzle. There was a suggestion of a nose on the clay, but it was a triangle, so I gave him a dog nose instead. There were lumps for ears, but I moved them around. The ears were made quite thick because concrete doesn't work well for really thin, delicate forms.
Plaster of Paris is easier to use than concrete, but you can't leave a plaster sculpture outside. When you go to the DIY store for your cement, tell the clerk you'd like a product that contains Portland cement and can be used in a mold. If you get a blank look, mention stepping stones.

Sculpt a Face "Just for Fun" in WED Clay
Last week I accidentally stumbled onto a new way to sculpt faces, and I'm having so much fun with it that I had to share it with you. These clay faces are not portraits, and not "right" in any way - but that's what makes them so much fun.
In the video you'll see that I just grab a lump of WED clay from the bag, check to see if it already has an almost-mouth or nose or eyes, and if I don't see anything face-like in the clay I keep squashing and folding it until something shows up. In this case, it was a mouth. Then I start adding to it, always trying to let the clay do most of the work.
No expectations, no "right" way to do it, (and no "wrong" way, either!). It's just for fun.
Let me know what you think of this idea. Do you ever think of art as a form of meditation or therapy?

3 - Make William the Egyptian Hippo with Paper Mache Clay
Be sure to watch the first two videos in this three-part series:
The armature: https://youtu.be/4AmYS6RYT4c
Adding the paper mache clay: https://youtu.be/idsWtFuFr8g
Paper mache clay recipe: https://youtu.be/f84FvxLHCnk
The chalk paint I used was Deco Art Chalky Finish Paint, color "Legacy", which I bought last year from amazon.com. Once the second color was mixed up from paint I had on hand, it was much more green, moving towards turquoise. If a blizzard wasn't bearing down on me, I would have gone to the store for a color that started out turquoise, like Deco Art's "Treasure." You can see it here on Amazon.com: http://amzn.to/2iqfiO6
I would still use two coats, though, and put both of them on with the stencil brush. The two slightly different colors really make a difference when you're painting something all one color.
If you make your own copy of William the hippo, please show him off on my blog. I would love to see how it comes out. https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com

As you'll see in the video, the batch of paper mache clay I used for William is much wetter than it was in the original video, but that worked out really well for my hippo sculpture.

1 - Make William the Egyptian Hippo with Paper Mache Clay
Find the free downloadable pattern at:
https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/hippo
You watch the second video in this series, adding the paper mache clay, here: https://youtu.be/idsWtFuFr8g
And the third video, showing how the blue chalk paint and lotus blossoms were added, is here: https://youtu.be/JGVy4iHMYiY
There are two more videos coming - one that shows how a paper-thin layer of paper mache clay is put on over the armature, and another one that shows how I painted the blue hippo and added the lotus flower design.
When I made my little blue Egyptian hippo I used the basic techniques found in my book Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay, with a few minor variations. If you'd like to see more projects using armatures like the one I'm making for William, go to http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
In this video I show you how I created the pattern on cardboard, then filled out the forms with crumpled foil. You could also use crumpled newspaper and masking tape, like I used in my book. (The tape I bought last week didn't stick at all, and that's why I used foil and hot glue instead.)
The one thing you really need to do before even starting your own Egyptian hippo is to go find as many images of William as you can find. William has fairly simple shapes, thanks to the original artist who created him over 3,500 years ago. If you look at the photos while adding your crumpled foil (or paper if you're sticking with tradition), instead of just relying on my video, your final sculpture will come out better. You always want to use as many source photos as you can find.

Make a Paper Mache Goose Pen Holder
This paper mache goose pen holder is an easy project that looks silly when you start out, but it looks a lot better after you've burnished and shaped the crumpled foil that forms a strong, solid base. Just two layers of paper mache dry really fast over a furnace vent, so I completed the whole project in one day, before sundown.
This would work with any kind of animal, not just geese. If you make one, I hope you'll show it off on the Daily Sculptors Page on my website at http://www.ultimatepapermache.com

Bug Mask is Done - Finally!
The butterfly mask I show in the video is in my mask book, available on amazon.com: http://amzn.to/2obUDmq
Do you ever start a project that just keeps getting out of control? And then you wonder why you started in the first place? Well, I think my Cicada mask would qualify. Towards the end I rushed things, and the finished mask does not come up to my usual standard.
To see the other videos in this bug mask project:
Video 1: https://youtu.be/PYQibiUe__s
Video 2: https://youtu.be/5SBCmI8pdV8
Video 3: https://youtu.be/P_lVVdcy-Zw
Those wings would look nice on a fairy costume, wouldn't they? that would be a two-hour project, and it wouldn't scare the neighbor's kids. :)
I kept looking at my mask book sitting over on the shelf and wondered why I didn't follow my own instructions? The silly bug mask would have been done ages ago, and it would have come out a lot better better. The shop towel mache would be lighter than the plaster cloth, and if I started out with a plan to make the entire bug the proportions would have been better. Ah well - we can't expect every project to come out perfect, can we?
Those legs, though.... maybe they're scary to me because I had to put them in the wrong place, and now they stick out in a menacing way. They aren't at all scary on a real bug.

Cicada Bug Mask Has Grown ...
My cicada bug mask keeps getting bigger - that's what happens when you design as you go. After I put the wings on I'll decide if I'm going to wear it on Halloween. If he looks as interesting as I think he will, I just might. You're never too old to wear a giant bug on your head, are you?
Because the original clay sculpt was covered in plaster cloth, the inside of this sculpture/headdress/mask will still fit over a head. The back-end of the bug was added with light-weight crumpled foil and hot glue, then covered with paper mache clay. Next, I'll add the wings, legs, and whiskers and paint the beautiful rust-colored markings on his head.

You can see a photo that shows how the mask looked when it was helmet-shaped and before I added the foil here: http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/the-bug-mask-has-grown
The only part of this project that is remotely like the animal sculptures in my book is the actual recipe for paper mache clay. No bugs in the book, and no plaster cloth. No foil, either. But if you'd like a full course on how to use patterns to create animal sculptures, you'll like the book - you can find it at http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
The only bug in my mask book is a butterfly, and it's a lot prettier than this cicada. So if you want to know how I make masks when I'm not experimenting, you can find my book on how to make paper mache masks here: http://amzn.to/2obUDmq

Bug Mask #2 - The Project Continues
My bug-faced mask project continues, and it's getting a little out of hand. The clay model is finished and captured by a few layers of plaster cloth. Next time I'll add a back to it, turning it into a helmet mask, and I'll add some long wings. Since this is an experimental project, I still don't know how I'll make the wings, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Bug-Faced Mask - Just Getting Started
I found a dead Cicada in the park this morning when I took my dogs for a walk, and I just had to bring it home and use it as a model for a bug-faced mask. I'm using WED clay again, although I used unbaked Super Skulpey when I made the masks in my book.
The mask should look very much like an alien when it's done, but my neighbors will recognize it. They sound like tiny chainsaws when they're singing in the trees, and there can be hundreds of them in just one city block. Quite a racket - but I kind of like the noise. You get used to it, and it seems strangely quiet when they go away in the winter.

A less expensive, and softer oil-based clay is Sargent Plastilina. I like using it for faster sculpts. You can find it here: http://amzn.to/2gU5mza

Making a Goblin Portrait With WED Clay
This was a fast, one-hour project, and was just an excuse for me to get my hands into my new WED Clay. I love that stuff - it's buttery, you can move it around fast on a portrait sculpture just to see how the expressions change, and it's just plain fun.
What will I do with my goblin now that it's done? Maybe nothing, or maybe I'll add some feathers and turn it into a wall mask. I'll probably just put the clay back in the bag and use it to make something else.
I had to order my WED Clay from amazon because my local pottery store doesn't carry it. You can find it here: http://amzn.to/2x970D5
WED Clay is less expensive than oil-based modeling clay, but you do need to be careful to not let it dry out too much.
