Art Business Isn't Working :(
Well, this experiment in selling art online just isn't working out very well. I tried to get traffic to a brand new website that has nothing on it but an online store, and no blog. I used Pinterest myself, and my daughter helped me out with Instagram. Tons of followers, no visitors to the site.
You can't sell anything online with no traffic. :(
The results surprised me, because just in the last 30 days my how-to site, UltimatePaperMache.com, received over 15,000 visitors directly from Pinterest, and I almost never pin anything myself. My readers do all that, and the traffic comes in almost automatically. But that doesn't happen on a new site with no articles, so people didn't even see all those pins I added to my new boards.
Even though this experiment didn't work, I'm still glad I did it. I may not be able to fix the problems I'm having with getting traffic to see my animal prints, but I did learn a new way to create a WordPress portfolio site, and I learned to not ignore the advice of experts when it comes to researching the potential traffic before starting an online business.
And, of course, I learned how much fun it is to paint animal portraits using Paint Tool Sai.

Meet Jonni Good, Animal Prints
This is my video for my new About page on my new site. You know me from UltimatePaperMache.com, but Now I'm also spending time at https://JonniGood.com and my new wildlife portraits are bringing up a lot of old memories.
I first sold animal prints at the Pike Place Market in Seattle in the 70s, way back in the distant past before they invented the iPod. :)
Back then, I couldn't afford to print anything in color, so all my animal prints were black and white. There were no acid-free, fade-proof inks available, and the new digital printers hadn't been invented yet.
After a few years, I went to work in 'real' jobs, but I always wanted to get back to art. In 2002 I started my first website, and a few years later I started UltimatePaperMache.com.
And now, I'm going back to my roots, and creating animal portraits again. Instead of a technical pen and black ink, I'm now using several digital programs to make full-color paintings. With each painting I make, I try hard to show how much I admire and respect the animals the paintings represent, and I hope that each one will look like the portrait of a friend. I want them to be a part of your family for a long time.
I do still get emails from people who bought one of my prints way back there at the Pike Place Market, in the 70s.
Since I sold those first black and white animal prints, digital printers and fade-proof, acid-free inks were invented, which allows me and other artists to sell affordable fine art prints on museum-quality paper. My new Giclee prints will look beautiful on your walls for many years if you treat them like you would any other piece of art.
If you have any questions or suggestions, I'd love to hear from you. Is there an animal that you think I should add to my collection? Let me know. :)

Using Pinterest to Sell Art Online
Can we use Pinterest to get traffic to a brand new online art store? I intend to find out. This is the next step in my experiment to see what it takes to sell art online.
Our Pinterest profiles are below - if you follow us, I do promise I'll follow you back. If you watched the video you know why that's important:
https://www.pinterest.com/jonnigood153/
https://www.pinterest.com/jessierasche2/
Pinterest seems like a perfect fit for artists who are trying to get traffic back to a new website because it's an image-sharing site, and paintings and sculptures look nice in photographs.
However, there are some tricky problems, which I discuss in this video. Pinterest doesn't work the way it used to. Back when it was new, I threw a few images up on Pinterest for UltimatePaperMache.com and then wandered off and forgot about them. Yet my paper mache boards have 1,499 followers, and my pins get almost 150,000 views every month.
From looking at those stats, you can see why I decided to concentrate on Pinterest for my new website selling animal wall art. But things have changed rather drastically since I haphazardly created my first Pinterest profile.
Today, because the algorithm determines popularity before deciding which pins people see, we need to have a popular board or profile before anyone sees our pins at all. Many experts say you should just ask your friends to follow you, to get the ball rolling. And that's exactly what I'm doing now, because we're all friends, right? :)
By the way, I'm looking for videos or books that show us how to use Pinterest to market physical products, like art. All the training I've found so far have been specifically designed for Lifestyle bloggers, not online stores.
I know that Pinterest can be used to help sell physical goods, but what's the best way to design the images for the pins? What's the best pinning schedule? Etc., etc. If you know of a video I should be watching, please let me know. If YouTube won't let you post a link, send it me: http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/contact

My New Squarespace Website for Selling Art Online
I promised to show you my new website and the type of art I hope to sell online. I finally have enough of it done to have something to share with you. The look of the website will change, but the bones are there, and everything is working.
The website is built on Squarespace, the printing is done by Printful, and the buy button comes from Shopify. I mentioned these companies in my video but I'm not in any way associated with them, I just wanted you to know which products I'm using to get my art store online. There are certainly other options, but these are the ones I'm working with.
You can check out my new website and see how it looks at https://www.JonniGood.com
If you'd like to learn more about designing a website on Squarespace, I recommend starting here: https://youtu.be/Z51BflSoBRs
I've been able to use several of Anjelica's tips in my own site, and her videos convinced me to use Squarespace instead of sticking with Wordpress. I'm glad I did.

Selling Art Online - Answering Your Concerns
See, I do listen to you guys. :)
In this video I hope to ease your minds about my new "selling art online" venture - specifically, why I chose not to sell my paper mache sculptures in my new business experiment, in addition to the reasons I gave you in my last video.
The numbers are important, but that's not the whole story. Watch the video to see what those reasons are.
There are two things I forgot to mention in the video. I'm too lazy to do it over, so I'll just mention them here. First, when I said that one of the reasons why I make sculptures is so I'll have something to show you on my blog, what I really should have said is that I get "paid" for my sculptures because I get to teach you how to make them yourself, and I really love teaching.
I don't get paid in money, of course, (except for the few patterns that I do actually sell in order to help support the website), but I still get a lot out of it. In fact, teaching paper mache sculpting techniques is my real hobby. The sculptures I make for the blog and my videos are a nice side benefit for me.
I get 'paid' when you add comments to the blog or on my video channel, and when you show off your own work on the Daily Sculptors Page. I even receive emails from people who tell me how much their new sculpting hobby has changed their life. That's all the reward I need for keeping the website online. Some things really are worth more than money.
And I get to fill up my house with original wildlife art. Win, win. :)
There's also something I should have mentioned when I talked about making copies of paper mache sculptures. The easiest way to do it would be to use Li-Qua-Che, a pourable paper mache product. It isn't available in small quantities, and it isn't always easy to find. Because of the price, it might seem more expensive than using paper strips and paste, or even if you used my paper mache clay recipe.
However, it works with plaster molds, just like ceramic slip. Plaster costs a whole lot less money than silicone, so building up a nice collection of sculptures would take a much lower up-front investment. It takes way less time to make a copy using the product than it does if you use traditional methods of paper mache, and in a business time counts. Plus, the Li-Qua-Che reproduces every tiny detail, something that's really hard to do with other forms of paper mache.
No, I don't have a recipe for it so you can make your own pourable paper mache (believe me, I've tried!) but you can find it on amazon.com: http://amzn.to/2pxOrCp
(That's an affiliate link. If you prefer to search for it on Amazon yourself, be sure to include the hyphens, or you won't find it.)
You can see a video of me using this product here: https://youtu.be/N7u6gtHlY2A
If I did enjoy making the same thing over and over again, that's probably how I'd do it. Someday, maybe I will. But not right now.

How to Paint Fur with Jessie Rasche
This video was created especially for us by my daughter, Jessie Rasche. She's an award-winning oil painter, and it was so kind of her to make this video for us. Even though her painting of the snow monkey is on a canvas, the fur-painting technique she shows us could also be used on our paper mache sculptures. Watch how she uses underpainting under the fur to make the painting lively.
Jessie calls this painting "Daydream."

My Experiment in Selling Art Online-The First Major Decision
This is an update to let you know about a major decision I've made in my experiment in selling art online. I've been reading a lot of books, watching videos, teaching myself new things, and just generally learning as much as I can about what is required to put an online business together.
In that process, I had to come to grips with the first rule of business: that it isn't a business at all if it doesn't pay its employees a fair wage. Since I don't need another hobby, (I already have one of those), I had to find out right at the start how many paper mache sculptures I could make in a month, and what would be a fair and reasonable price to put on those sculptures. Once I had that information, I could tell if a business built around selling the sculptures would be able to pay its employee a reasonable wage. (By 'employee' I mean me, of course. I'll be the only one doing the work.)
Watch the video to see what I discovered. And be sure to stay tuned for the next video, where Jessie Rasche, (she's my daughter and an award-winning painter), shows us how to paint fur on our sculptures. You won't want to miss it, and it should be online soon.

Boer Goat Done - And Selling Art Online
Yes, it's finally done - Daisy, the Boer goat that I started last month, and Mike, the friendly tomcat, are finished. No video about the painting of Mike, though - maybe next time I'll be more organized.

Painting A Boer Goat With Layers of Acrylic Glaze
The goat took a long time to sculpt with Apoxie Sculpt, but painting her was easy with the layers of acrylic glaze. The glazing liquid does slow down the drying time, so I had to wait for each layer to dry. The cat will be painted just as soon as I get over my cold (my brain isn't working all that great today, and I don't want to mess him up.)

How to Sculpt Cat Fur with Apoxie Sculpt
Sculpting cat fur: Yes, there's now a cat to go with my Goat #3, and I turned on the camera while I sculpted the fur texture on the cat's chest. It's very 'abstract' or 'painterly.' I didn't want to make the fur look realistic because the goat's texture isn't realistic either, and I want them to fit together nicely. So - this is a video showing how I sculpted a texture to indicate a nice ruff of fur on a barn cat's chest.
So - what happened to Goat #2?
I intended to finish Goat #2 the same way I finish my masks, but instead of using the shop towel mache, like I did all the masks in my book, I would use plaster cloth, like I did when I made my Gorilla mask.
Then YouTube sent me a notice that Brick in the Yard had a new video. I watched it (big mistake!) They made a mold out of really stretchy silicone, and after the silicone sets up, you can pull it off the original like a sock - no dividing lines.
Why did that matter? Because I started thinking about making a mold for the goat, which would be totally impractical. The mold itself would cost about 80 bucks. I told myself I wasn't going to do it, but my self didn't listen. I made the goat's details, unintentionally, as if I was going to make a mold. The plaster cloth covered the details because they weren't deep enough, and I tried to compensate by not putting on enough plaster cloth. When the plaster cloth was pulled off the goat, it simply collapsed, and the original sculpt was destroyed.
But I don't mind, because I like this version much better, anyway.

Making a Form For Sculpting A Head
I intend to sculpt a lot of faces and heads this year, and do a lot of character studies. My new home-made form will help. I already have a small form for sculpting heads and faces, but I wanted a bigger one.
The model for my new form was the resin casting of a skull that I bought several years ago on amazon.com. I've used it a lot - you can see two of the masks I made by sculpting over the skull here:
Halloween Portrait Mask: https://youtu.be/zkBXOsdk3Fk
Paper Mache Halloween Witch Mask: https://youtu.be/AoieVrlC9-Y
But the skull has big holes that always have to be filled in when you're sculpting a face, and I have to set it in a coffee can to keep it from rolling around when I want my sculpture to have a flat back so I can hang it on the wall. My little form works really well just by attaching it to the slanted mask stand I made, but that didn't work with the resin skull, so I needed to make a new one. It wasn't difficult - but since I wanted to be able to create copies, I did need to make a mold. You can find the Rebound 25 brush-on silicone mold making product here: http://amzn.to/2jF87l5
The mannequin I have is great for masks because it's bigger than most mask forms you can buy (they're usually built for kids). And they do have a female form that looks like an actual human, as opposed to the Styrofoam hat stands that you find online. However, the nose and other features can get in the way when you're doing a portrait. If you're interested in the mannequin I have for making masks, you can find it here: http://amzn.to/2j1kBRS

Making Your Sculptures Symmetrical - Two Easy Tricks
http://www.UltimatePaperMache.com
This is a short video to show you some tips for making your sculptures symmetrical. The biggest problem I have is getting both eyes in the same place, the same size, and looking in the same direction. (Is that three problems?) I used these tips today to help me with my goat's eyes. One of the biggest problems with animals, especially the ones who keep their eyes on the side of their heads instead of the front, is that you can really only see one eye at the same time. Still, you want them to both be the same. After using the first tip in this video I'm much happier with my goat sculpture.
The 'acetate alternative' trick would work just as well if you have an empty picture frame with a piece of glass. It is a bit fiddly - you have to close one eye when you're looking at one side, draw on the shapes with your dry erase marker, and then when you flip it over and look at the other side you'll need to close the other eye. This was really apparent when I worked from the front of the goat. I made sure to mark the center line, so I would get my head in the same place. Like I said - it's a little tricky, but it was worth the extra effort.
I do sometimes us a mirror, too. It's the trick to start with because it's easier, and sometimes it's all you need. For my goat problem, it didn't really help much because the eyes didn't look right when I looked at them from the front.

Boar Goat Sculpture Fast Update
http://www.UltimatePaperMache.com
Be sure to see the other video, where I tell you why I was giving up on the foil armature of my Boer goat sculpture. You can find it here:
https://youtu.be/63yPBbbjSxw
The WED clay is following the lines of my somewhat crude Boer goat skull, with the only real sculpting so far being done on the front of the muzzle (lips and nose) and the eyelids. Taking the time to build the skull, based on photos of a real one taken from all sides made a huge difference. The clay is also making a big difference, because it goes on so much faster than the crumpled foil and hot glue.
WED clay is wet clay with something added to keep it from drying out too fast, and it's really nice for sculpting, It can't be fired. It was originally made for Walt Disney, so that's where the WED comes from. You can get the clay some local pottery supply stores, or buy it online at http://amzn.to/2jtiaM7

Boar Goat Sculpture Starting Over
http://www.UltimatePaperMache.com I started my Boer goat sculpture last week, and now I'm starting over. It turns out that I don't like working with the foil for the armature on larger sculptures, although I did like using it for the squirrel and the unicorn I kept wanted to move the foil after it was glued on, and that's really hard to do.
So I started over, and that gave me the opportunity to start where I should have in the first place - with the skull. I can't give you a link to the skull I'm using for a model, because etsy.com links don't last very long. But you can just do a Google image search and find on. The fake skull was made out of foil, which my eyeballs can't see very well, so I covered it with plaster cloth. I could have achieved the same result by covering it with masking tape, but I left my tape in the garage and it froze. Now I can't get the tape off the roll - I guess you're not supposed to let it get so cold.
The skull I used as a model had a longer face than the photos I'm using for my doe, but that doesn't matter. I just shortened everything. Every goat's face is a little different. I guess we'll find out if this was a good idea after the clay sculpt is done.
If you'd like to see some of the smaller sculptures I've done using the foil in the armature, check out -

Fast And Eay Instant Paper Mache Recipe - Diy Instant Paper Mache
http://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/fast-and-easy-instant-paper-mache-recipe
I used this fast and easy DIY Instant Paper Mache recipe to make the cougar and hippo wall hangings that often appear behind me in my videos.
The result, as you'll see in the video, is strong and lightweight, and it captures details in a silicone mold completely. The cast sculptures look exactly like the clay originals.
This stuff is strong - and I proved it yesterday when I sent my hippo crashing to the floor. It survived without cracking, chipping, or shattering. It's pretty amazing, when you consider how easy and cheap it is.
The original idea came from a book called The Barefoot Architect, which has tons of ideas for inexpensive building methods. One of the building methods I found in the book is called "plasto." It's very thin concrete reinforced with mesh onion bags. Using this method, you can build a 3-cubic-meter silo or a water reservoir that holds a thousand liters of water with just one bag of cement. You can take a peek at the book here: http://amzn.to/2jrnrQS
I didn't need either a silo or a water reservoir, but I used the basic idea of sandwiching a cheap form of reinforcement (cheesecloth) inside two layers of a fast-setting material (plaster of Paris mixed with paper). The result is this DIY Instant Paper Mache.
This paper mache recipe does require a mold - at least I think it does. However, I shouldn't say you can't use it without a mold. Maybe it would work, if you work faster than I do. If you try it, let us know what happens.

How To Sculpt An Animal Portrait - Boer Goat, Part 1
Thanks for watching the video. If you have any interest in making a giraffe, I recently created a new pattern, based on the giraffe in this video. It turned out really well, and it's now one of the most popular patterns on my site. You can find it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/giraffe
http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/how-to-sculpt-an…rtrait-boer-goat -- My first project for the new year is an animal portrait sculpture, and the animal I chose is a Boer Goat. In this video I start out with the basic shapes. In upcoming videos, I'll begin to add the secondary shapes and finish filling out the armature with aluminum foil. The final skin will be either epoxy clay or paper mache clay - I haven't decided on that part yet.
The Winterset Ranch website has a lot of excellent photos of these beautiful animals, which really show off all the different color patterns of Boer goats. You can find the website here: http://www.wintersetranch.com/our-goats.html
I hope to sell this sculpture when it's finished, so I do hope it turns out nice. I usually send a donation to the Heifer Foundation at the end of each year, but it didn't happen this year. I'm hoping that I can sell this sculpture and make them just a little more money than I can usually afford to send them. They give farm animals and training to families for whom just one goat or a small clutch of chickens can make all the difference between poverty and hope. Be sure to check out their website at https://www.heifer.org/
I intended to ask you all to go to their website and pick out your favorite animal, and I'd sculpt the critter that got the most votes. I decided against it, just because I wanted to get started right away. I have a lot of different projects planned for the next few months, and this is the one I wanted to do first.
The pattern won't be on my website, but if you'd like to see the other patterns that I do have available, you can see them at: http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
To understand the underlying shapes, I looked at Nubian goats, which have more clearly defined shapes on their faces, and then looked at Boer goats to find the right profile for my pattern. I also did a Google image search for goat skulls. I may need to make some slight alterations to the profile as I sculpt, because I may have made the top line of the muzzle too straight. That's an easy thing to change as I work.
The hardest part will be getting my goat sculpture to stand up. The plaster in the base of my Giraffe makes it stand politely on the shelf, but the goat's lower edge will be much narrower than the bottom of my giraffe's neck. If the plaster that I add is not enough to keep her from falling on her nose, I may need to make a stand for her. Any suggestions are more than welcome.
The post I wrote for the giraffe is here: http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-giraffe2
Stay tuned for the rest of this project. In the near future I also plan to discuss the DIY "instant paper mache" that I used to make the hippo and cougar on the wall behind me in the video, I hope to do some character sculptures with the help of my resin skull, and I think I'll add some wings to the half-finished Unicorn armature that I used in one of my last videos and turn it into Pegasus, instead. No horn - just wings. So - stay tuned for those upcoming videos, too.

DIY Sculpture Stand
http://www.UltimatePaperMache.com
Today you get to watch me fumble around with a little cordless screwdriver while I fix my DIY sculpture stand. Why on earth would you want to do that? Because if I can make a sculpture stand myself, with my very limited carpentry skills, so can you.
The only thing you'll need to buy new is the lazy susan mechanism. The one I bought will hold 500 pounds. You can find them for less than $5.00 on Amazon.com here: http://amzn.to/2iP0gRG
I used my little cordless screwdriver, but a regular human-powered screwdriver would work just as well. I got mine for about $18.00: http://amzn.to/2i0qSlu
When I first built my sculpture stand, I had to drill some holes from the screws. That happened about 15 years ago, so I didn't show that step in the video. I also had to use a hole saw to make the big hole in the board that came with the kitchen stand.
My stand probably cost less than $30 new, but that was a long time ago. Look for one at a thrift store or a ReStore, or consider using one you bought for your own kitchen but never really use. It helps to have a removable wooden top, like mine. If you'd like to see what the new ones look like, you can see one here on amazon: http://amzn.to/2i4aNJF - But I don't think that one has a wooden top. Ikea has them, but they cost even more. Do some scrounging - it's fun!
Or be really crafty and make a stand out of 2x4's, and get some casters to go on the bottom so you can move your sculpting stand when you need to. You can get the casters at Lowes. Make sure to get heavy-duty ones, so they don't break when you're working on a larger project.
If you do a lot of sculpting, this DIY sculpting stand will make your projects go more quickly.

How I Painted my White Unicorn
http://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/patterns
One of my readers asked me to do a short video to show how I painted the Unicorn. Eileen pointed out that it's really hard to paint an animal sculpture all one color and have it come out nice, but she liked the all-white Unicorn. So - how did I make that white coat look more interesting?
I painted the Unicorn the same way I did the mini-rabbit, using some small bottles of chalk paint that I bought at Walmart, and stencil brushes. I pounced the colors onto the sculpture, using three different coats in slightly different colors. The different colors show through because no coat completely covers the previous coat, and the variations look quite natural.
This is a fast, easy way to paint an animal sculpture, and I'll be using it a lot in the future. It will work best when you don't want brush marks to show, and when the natural coat of the animal is either all one color, like the body of the Unicorn, or very slight variations within the coat, but without actual color patterns, like you see on a wild rabbit.
I bought my chalk paint at Walmart, but I just discovered that the FolkArt company also sells chalk paint in small bottles, and you can find them online at http://amzn.to/2j0RLld
They also have the special brushes that are supposed to be used for this thick-bodied paint, which has a completely matte finish.
I ran out of varnish, so my rabbit and unicorn still need their final clear coat. Another reader recommended a varnish by Americana, which comes in Gloss, Satin, Ultra Matte and Soft Touch. I ordered the Matte version (and the Soft Touch) just to see what they're like. I'll report back to you as soon as I've had time to experiment with them. The chalk paint line has a wax finish, but I decided not to use it because the label on the one I bought from Walmart said it needed to be reapplied every year. I'll stick with the varnish.

Make a Baby Unicorn with Apoxie Sculpt
http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
I had a lot of fun making this Baby Unicorn with Apoxie Sculpt.
The design of this Unicorn is intended more for adults than kids, but I've had a lot of fun arranging him on the wooden plaque with his little friend, the rabbit.
The pattern for the Unicorn has him standing up straight, which makes him a perfect example of how all of my sculpitng patterns always start out. Once I have all the proportions of the legs and body the way I want them, it's easy to change the shapes of the legs at the joints to put the animal sculpture in any posture I want.
In this video, I show you how I'd change the Apoxie Sculpt Unicorn's legs if I wanted to use the same pattern to make a sculpture of Pegasus, flying through the air (except for the wings, of course). Patterns make it easy to sculpt animals in any posture or action.
In fact, if I wanted to create a drawing or painting of a Unicorn, I would probably create a sculpture, first, using this pattern or one very much like it. Then I'd use the sculpture as a model for the drawing, instead of using photos or foals, because the lens and angle of a photo can change the shapes and perspective. Using the sculpture instead of a photo would result in a more realistic drawing.
This Unicorn could also be made with another brand of epoxy clay, like Magic Sculpt, or you could use the Silky-Smooth Air Dry Clay recipe on my website. You'll find it in the Paper Mache Art Library on my site.

Make a Paper Mache Christmas Tree
http://www.UtimatePaperMache.com
OK, this isn't my best work, but I wanted a lighted tree and this is the only way I could get one that would last with an active cat in the house. No balls to bat, no branches to climb, no real tree to come crashing to the floor. Next year I may start earlier and make a better one - I do include some ideas in the video for making one that is a bit more 'artistic' than mine. Probably the best part of this project is that it didn't require a trip to the store for anything - and by sitting the wet paper mache, just one layer, in front of the heating vent from the furnace, it dried in a few hours and the whole project was done in just one day.
