Make A Yarn Bowl with Plaster Cloth and Paper Mache Clay
This was an easy project, and I know I'll be using this yarn bowl for years. In fact, I'll make myself a few more, because I'm trying to learn how to do Tunisian crochet with multiple color yarns, and that means more yarn bowls to keep them from getting tangled up. If you'd like to see screen-shots and written instructions, you can find them here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/make-a-yarn-bowl
If you know anyone who knits or crochets, this would make a lovely gift, especially if you personalize your yarn bowl by painting it with their favorite colors - or maybe a drawing of a kitten chasing yarn? That would be fun. 😄

Make A PUFFER FISH With Paper Mache Clay
This Guineafowl Pufferfish is a lot of fun to make. He's really cute, and there are tons of photos online that you can use as models when you're making your own pufferfish with paper mache clay. I know fish don't really smile, but these fish look like they're smiling when they've blown themselves into a ball, and it makes them look absolutely adorable.
I found a really interesting article about pufferfish and their toxin, and I'll put a link to it down below. That page also has the photo of the inflated fish that I used for my model.
What color is a pufferfish?
The guineafowl pufferfish species comes in both brown and yellow versions, and there are a lot of other species of pufferfish that come in different colors that you might want to make, instead.
I used Burnt Umber for my fish because that's the color of the fish I used for my model. Other people describe their color as purple-black. Find a photo online that you like, and use the colors of your favorite fish for your model.
Spikes or No Spikes - It's Up to You
The Guineafowl Pufferfish doesn't have long spikes, but some species of puffers do. You can even find some that are called porcupine fish, for the obvious reason.
I didn't add spikes (except for the tiny ones that I got almost by accident when I added the air dry clay) because the photo I used for my model didn't show any spikes.
If you prefer a sharper, more dangerous-looking puffer fish, see how I used wooden toothpicks to add sharp spikes to my echidna, click here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/make-a-paper-mache-echidna

The aluminum wire I used for the fins: https://amzn.to/38sjTdA - you can use any thin wire that you happen to have.
Plaster of Paris can be purchased at any DIY store, or online: https://amzn.to/3oxTYH4
I used a 1/2" dowel for my base, but any size will work if it's strong enough to hold up your fish. You could also make your base with a nice piece of wood, or hang your puffer fish from a bent wire that you tape to the top of the pattern before adding the paper mache.

Fast Paper Mache with Foil and Hot Glue Armatures
Are you in a hurry to get your paper mache project done?
Paper mache and paper mache clay will dry just fine without being baked. However, if your armature is safe to use in the oven, baking your project will really speed things up.
I'm not usually in a hurry when I make a sculpture, but it can be frustrating when you want to keep working but you have to stop and let the wet parts get dry. You're in the flow and don't want to stop, but you can't hold the piece in your hands until the wet parts are dry.
When I made the Three Wise Men, I used polymer clay for the heads, hands and feet. That meant they had to go in the oven. That was the first time I baked a foil and hot glue armature, and I was surprised when it worked.
But it still made me nervous.
Thanks to our friend Carib Queen, who suggested covering the armature with a special foil tape, we now have a way to safely bake a paper mache sculpture that's built over a foil and hot glue armature. No dripping, and no small pieces falling off in the oven.
I also like the way the tape smooths out the crumpled foil just enough so it's easier to see the shapes better. Maybe it's just my old eyes, but the sparkles from the crumpled foil make it hard for me to see if the shapes are symmetrical or bumpy. It was easier to see what was going on after the tape was added.
I baked the little cat head at 250° F (121.111° C). There's no way to know exactly how long it will take to dry all the way through. Never paint paper mache if there's even a drop of water still inside.
You can find the foil tape here: https://amzn.to/3hyEPCG
I think I said it cost about $6 in the video. It was actually about $8 - but you get 50 yards so it should last a long time if you only use it on the outside of the foil and hot glue armature.
Bu the way, this tape is used to repair heating ducts, but it is not "duct tape." Totally different stuff.

Sculpt the Three Wise Men - Part 4
The Three Wise Men sculptures are finally done!
It was really fun using so many different materials in this project. I used images and materials from a lot of different cultures, too. The turban photos I used for reference were worn by men in Afghanistan, the robes came (sort of) from old drawings of Persian Zoroastrian priests, the sandals are Persian, Arabian and North African, and I used ribbons from Turkey and Italy. Whew!
In spite of all the experiments I made you wade through in this video series, this project really wasn't all that complicated. As soon as I have a new blog post with screen shots (of just the steps that actually worked, no experiments or do-overs) I'll post a link to it in this description.

Mixed Media Wise Men, Part 3 - the Air Dry Clay
These guys are going to be done by Christmas, I promise - but it's been a slow process. (My couch-eating 60-pound puppy isn't really helping much, either... It's hard to work in the studio when you have a toddler in the house. 😄)
The next time I do something like this it will go a lot faster, I'm sure. If you'd like to see more figure sculptures, be sure to let me know in the comments below - or hit the like button.
BTW - when you make yours, will you dress them in the Three Kings style, with bright colors and lots of bling, or do you prefer the plain and simple Zoroastrian priest idea? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject, so please leave a comment and let us know.

Sculpting the Wise Men, Part 2: New Base Heads Feet And Sandals
In this video I make some changes to the Wise Men that I started in last week's video. I changed the way the figures are attached to the base, I made the wire armatures for two more Wise Men, and I used Super Sculpey for the new heads, the feet and the sandals. Next week I think all three of them will have their clothes on and be finished. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 😀)

Make The Christmas Wise Men with Super Sculpey and Air Dry Clay
In this video I start making one of the Wise Men from the Christmas story. This is a mixed-media sculpture, using Super Sculpey for the head (and maybe the turban), my Silky-Smooth Air Dry Clay recipe for the clothes, and probably Magic Sculpt for his feet and ankles to make him stand up nice and straight on his wooden base.

Paper Mache Clay with Plaster of Paris - Does it Work?
Is it possible to make paper mache clay with plaster of Paris instead of pre-mixed drywall joint compound?
People have been asking me that for years. I didn't really think it would work, but I finally decided to try it and find out for sure.
In this experiment I show you that it is indeed possible to make a version of paper mache clay with plaster, but the result isn't the same as the original recipe.
It can only be used for a few hours before it gets too hard to use, so you'll need to make very small batches. Use the paper mache clay recipe with the gram measurements to make it easy to cut the recipe in half or quarters: https://youtu.be/A_yqGqT-Ua0
Or use the Silky Smooth Air Dry Clay recipe instead: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/new-air-dry-clay-recipe
Whichever recipe you try, remember to not put the flour in until everything else is completely mixed in. Run your mixer for three to five minutes, and then add flour if you need it.
Also remember that the spoon, beaters and bowls don't get washed in your sink - plaster will harden under water, even inside your pipes. Throw them in a bowl of water, rinse them off, and throw the water outside.
If you have pre-mixed joint compound available, I recommend using it instead of plaster of Paris. The original recipe that uses drywall joint compound instead of plaster will stay usable for much longer (weeks, in fact, if you keep it covered and in the fridge). It feels creamier when applying it to the armature, too - I think it just feels nicer.
On the other hand, the slowly stiffening plaster version does let you apply it quickly when it's first made, and then sculpt details later as it gets stiffer - kind of like working with epoxy clay.
Go ahead and try the plaster version - you may like it better than I do.
You can find plaster of Paris in any DIY store, or you can buy it online (affiliate link) https://amzn.to/2UqWQbm

If you experiment with using the plaster instead of joint compound, please let us know -- Do you like it? Did it stay workable long enough? Were you happy with the final result? Let us know in the comments below.

Easy Way to Paint a Baby Tiger Mask - Even if You Don't Know How
If you'd like to have a whole family of tigers, there's a special price for both the big tiger and the baby tiger patterns - but only until October 20, 2020. You can find them here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/tiger
Lots of people who saw my big white tiger mask told me I should paint an orange tiger, too. That gave me an excuse to paint some stripes on my Young Simba headdress pattern from the Lion King collection.
I made some big boo-boos when painting this little guy, but it's no big deal to make a few mistakes. And if you don't mind fixing a few things along the way, it's really not hard to paint a baby tiger - even if you've never done it before. If I could do it (after several tries) you can do it, too.
If you already have the Young Simba headdress mask pattern, you don't need another one. Just cut it out and tape it together again, and paint stripes on it this time.
If you would like the Lion or Tiger cub pattern alone, without the adult tiger, you can find it on the Lion King page - just scroll down to the Young Simba or Nala image: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/LionKing

Fur Texture With Paper Mache Clay
This video shows a fast and easy way to create a fur texture using paper mache clay. I used my new tiger mask pattern for the video, but this would work for a long-haired dog, for the fur around the edge of a wolf's face, or even a man's beard.
When you pull the paper mache clay this way, the tiny paper fibers stick out, creating a feathery look. I'm also creating dips that show up nicely as shadows, even before the piece is painted.

White tiger? Orange tiger?
I really would love to know what you think about the 'white vs orange' question. They're both beautiful colors, so which one should I choose for my tiger?
After he's done I'll the back part that turns him into a wearable mask and hang him on the wall. That way, he will show up in my future videos. So orange or white - which one do you vote for?

Make a Murder Hornet Halloween Mask - Part 2
The Murder Hornet now has his Halloween colors, and he's ready to scare the neighbors into handing out some treats.
I think the hornet mask would slide around a little without some felt glued around the inside, or perhaps he could be worn over an backward-facing baseball cap. I didn't take it that far because I'm a little old to go trick-or-treating this year. There just comes a time when you have to step aside and let the kids have all the candy. :)
I used some drywall joint compound to smooth the paper mache clay. If you keep it paper-thin, it will work over paper strips and paste, too. But it will need to be protected by paint, because the joint compound all by itself is quite fragile.
Recipe for paper mache clay: https://youtu.be/1YQ6eUqcEh8
Video showing how to make paper mache smooth: https://youtu.be/Ad2iLa201kA
I drilled three holes for the shanks of three buttons. They're all different, but I think they still look just fine. I held them in place with hot glue.
Then I sprayed it with white primer, and painted him with acrylic paint.
Now all that's needed is a coat of varnish. I'll use matte varnish on most of the carapace, and gloss varnish over the eyes. This self-leveling clear medium might make it look even more glass-like. Perhaps one like this: https://amzn.to/3m1Iivt
Or maybe a resin product of some kind would work. I don't have any of that, either, so I'll use the gloss acrylic varnish that I have on hand: https://amzn.to/2ZaoR9Y

What's a Murder Hornet? It's an insect that isn't supposed to be in the US, but it was recently found in Whatcom County, Washington. It's officially called the Asian Giant Hornet, and they really are big. They are a threat to honey bees. But they have beautiful faces, and great Halloween colors. Ideas Wanted For Paper Mache Masks and Projects
I started a new mask pattern (a tiger headdress mask) but I want to do another Halloween mask before the end of October. I'd love to hear your ideas for the mask you'd like me to make next. Silly? Weird? Creepy? Something else entirely?
Give me your ideas in the comments below, and I'll pick the one that would be the most fun for me to make.
And please also give me some ideas for my silly animal caricature sculptures, too. Animals and people are quite often very much alike - so what kind of people would pair up well with your favorite animals? Or what character do they look like, from a famous book or classic movie? 😀
I can't wait to see what ideas you think up!
Even though I won't be able to do them all, the ideas themselves will be a lot of fun. And if you see one that I don't have time for, be sure to do it yourself - and then show it off on the Daily Sculptors page:

Easy DIY Form for Sculpting A Head
I made this pattern for a simplified skull-shaped form to make sculpting a head a lot easier (and it's a much less expensive than the resin skull I've often used in the past). This cardboard sculpting form leaves out all the holes that you see in a real skull, but it still has the basic features that help create realistic human faces with clay.
If you'd like to use this form, you can download it at https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/face-sculpting-form
(There is a small charge for it).

Sculpt A Face Over An Easy Diy Armature
In this video you can see me sculpt a face over my new skull-shaped face-sculpting form. I made the form with a pattern that is now available on my website, at https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/face-sculpting-form
I made the pattern because I often use a resin skull when I sculpt a face, but I felt that a simplified skull would make it easier, (and it would be a lot less expensive).
This cardboard form leaves out all the holes in a real skull, and has only the basic features that are really needed - the eye sockets, the cheekbones, the dental arch and jaw. And, of course, they're in the right place for a "standard" human face. Because the form is made with cardboard, it can be altered if you need a taller forehead, for instance, or even a lop-sided face. Do that before you start with the clay, of course.
To see how the skull-shaped form pattern is taped together: https://youtu.be/3ostlWK64H8
To see me adding plaster cloth to the form (optional): https://youtu.be/Y7hF3ULu5so
For this demonstration I was using WED clay, a wet modeling clay. You can use any modeling clay you like, but if you'd like to use the WED clay you can find it here: https://amzn.to/3ioQnZ8
If you use the form to make a face sculpture, I really hope you'll come back to my website and show it off: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page
I'd love to see it.

Plaster Cloth Over A Skull Shaped Form
In this video I show you how I added plaster cloth over my skull-shaped form. The form was made using a pattern I created, and it really helps when sculpting a human face or head.
You won't need the plaster cloth if you're using a softer modeling clay, but if you use a wet clay, like I did in a previous video, the water in the clay will eventually make its way through the plastic tape and dampen the cardboard. You can always just make a new form using the same pattern, but for a permanent form you intend to use often, the plaster cloth will really help.
If you'd like to use my pattern, you can find it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/face-sculpting-form

Painting The Rooster
I painted my rooster sculpture today. As you can see in the two previous videos, he started out with a wet clay model that I sculpted with the use of a cardboard pattern. Then I added the plaster cloth shell, and finally the Magic Sculpt epoxy clay. And today he got his bright red comb and wattles and his white feathers, when I put on a coat of acrylic paint.
If you want to use my free pattern and make your own rooster head sculpture, you can find it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/sculpting-a-rooster

You could use my air dry clay recipe instead of the epoxy clay: https://youtu.be/YOiovGN-yHA
If you decide to use some epoxy clay for a project of your own, please let us know how it turns out. You can upload a photo on the Daily Sculptors page on my website: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page

Rooster Head Made With Magic Sculpt
The Magic Sculpt Rooster is very close to being done. Now all I need to do is paint him, and that shouldn't take long. It will be red and white, so it should look really dramatic when he gets his colors on.
In this video you saw me take the wet clay out of the plaster cloth shell, and then add the texture layer using Magic Sculpt, an epoxy clay made for sculptors.
If you'd like to use the drawing I used to set the outline of the rooster before sculpting the clay model, you can download it for free here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/magic-sculpt-rooster

Sculpt a Rooster Portrait - Using WED Clay and Plaster Cloth
I just started on a sculpture of a rooster, using WED clay, plaster cloth, and (next video) Magic Sculpt epoxy clay.
These just happen to be the materials I had on hand. If you'd like to make a rooster portrait and you don't have these materials, watch the video to see how you could achieve the same thing using items you already have in the house.

If I forgot any, please let me know. :)
Be sure to watch for the next video - I've already started removing the clay from the inside of the plaster cloth shell, and I'll begin adding the Magic Sculpt during puppy's afternoon nap. This fellow should be done in a day or two.
And if you make a rooster sculpture, please come back and show it off on the Daily Sculptors page. We'd love to see how it comes out.

Paper Mache Chicken - an Easy, No-Stress Project
This paper mache chicken is easy to make, and you can change it any way you like - make a whole flock of hens, and each one will be different.
I chose this easy chicken for today's post because I've got chickens on my brain - I'm sure you heard why as soon as you clicked the "play" button. 🐤
I mentioned an exciting video that my daughter will be making soon. If you subscribe to her channel you will be notified when it's online. You can find her channel here: https://www.youtube.com/jessierasche
This is the first project in my book "Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay." I started the book with the easiest project so readers would be successful right from the start and learn new skills with every project. If you'd like to peek inside the book you can see it here: http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
I used the experimental "no joint compound" air dry clay for today's chicken, but only because I made a batch of it for my last video and I wanted to use it up. You will probably want to use the original paper mache clay recipe, or my air dry clay recipe, (which works a lot like the clay I'm using in the video), or plain old paper strips and paste. They will all work beautifully for this project.

Paper Mache Clay Without Joint Compound
If we make Paper Mache Clay without joint compound, will it come out just as good as the original recipe?
What about the Silky-Smooth Air Dry Clay recipe? (Same ingredients, different proportions...)
People kept asking me if it was possible, so I decided to find out.
Although we should do more experiments to get the measurements more exact, I think the result may be (gasp!) even better than my original recipes that use the drywall joint compound.
For written instructions and a list of the ingredients, go here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-clay-without-joint-compound
This new mixture sticks to the armature as well as the original paper mache clay, holds really fine details just as well as my air dry clay recipe, and it dried hard as a rock. But it isn't easy to mix in the beginning while it's still really sticky.
If you try this, let us know how it came out. And if you have ideas for mixing it without making a mess, let us know that, too. 😀

You can buy 4# of powdered marble from amazon.com here: https://amzn.to/2XAbdwM - that's enough for over 8 batches of the air dry clay recipe. If you need more than that it's a lot less expensive if you get it in bigger bags. Azure Standard sells 50# for about $25 - but they have an unusual way of delivering their product, so read about that before ordering. https://bit.ly/3a65e5d

Paper Mache Rabbit - How to Make a Lop-Eared Bunny
Make this adorable paper mache rabbit using just crumpled paper, flour and water paste, and acrylic paint. Add a thin layer of drywall joint compound to make it smooth, but only if you already have some - you don't need to use it if you don't want to.
