Super-Strong Paper Mache that Dries Really Fast
Need a strong, lightweight mask fast? Here's a way to make super-strong paper mache that only needs one layer and dries overnight. But yeah, it's expensive - so only use this method if you need a mask that's almost indestructible, or if you need to get it done from start to finish in two days or less.
By the way, this lion, Simba, plus three more headdress-style masks for the Lion King Play, are now available as easy-to-use patterns here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/LionKing
The Titebond III glue is fantastic for these masks. My local hardware store only carries tiny bottles of it, and I have many more patterns to design for the Lion King characters. So I ordered my glue online from amazon.com - the larger bottles are a much better value than the small ones. You can find it here: https://amzn.to/2LmGSx7
When I have all the patterns done for the lions from the Lion King play I'll put a link to them here. In the meantime, if you'd like to make one of the animal sculptures that are on the wall behind me in the video, you can find the patterns here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns I make sure the patterns are easy enough so anyone can successfully complete their project - but just challenging enough so you'll be really proud of your sculpture when it's done. :)

Paper Mache Animals - Easy Bronze Coating
Paper mache animals can be made to look like real bronze with this fast technique. But as my video shows, it isn't easy to control the spray patina, and you may have to fiddle with it until you like it.
You can see how the deer pattern is put together, and how it was painted with realistic colors, here: https://youtu.be/kuSpYAeeHt4
The rest of the animals behind me in the video are also made with my DIY paper mache patterns, and you can use the bronze coating on any of them, if you want. You can see them all here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
My deer head is now hanging next to an abstract painting my daughter gave me. If you'd like to see all of her awesome paintings, including farm paintings and portraits as well as abstracts, click here: https://jessierasche.com/
I've used the bronze coating from Sculpt Nouveau before, on my Ballerina Bunny. That time, I used the Tiffany Green patina and it wasn't nearly as bright as the Light Green patina that I used on my deer. You can see how it looks in this video: https://youtu.be/9TaK6Df8SWk
I've also used their iron coating - and I love it. The patina creates a much softer rusting effect on the nice black surface - you can see how that looks on my raven ( https://youtu.be/62jXcRSWDJk ) and I faked the same look with acrylic paint on my gorilla mask ( https://youtu.be/XBeZDLm26_Y ).

Paper Mache Clay - Measure by Weight, Perfect Every Time
Use a kitchen scale to make your paper mache clay come out right every single time. This paper clay recipe with gram measurements can be used with toilet paper (my first choice) or shredded paper (with just a little more work).
Be sure to watch to the end, where I show you why I sometimes use paper mache strips and paste, and paper mache clay. Sometimes, using them both is the easiest way to get your sculpture to come out the way you want it.
To see the printed version of Rex's recipe with the gram measurements and screen shots, go to: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-clay-gram-measurements
Don't have a scale? Go ahead and use the original recipe with cup measurements. If it comes out a little too wet, just add more flour. You can find that video here: https://youtu.be/1YQ6eUqcEh8

Paper Mache Dinosaur - Hello Therizinosaurus, Bye-Bye Kangaroo
This paper mache dinosaur is just at the beginning stage, and I hope you'll follow along and make one with me. The pattern for the Therizinosaurus can be found on my website at https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/dinosaur
To see how to make a dinosaur pattern of your own (and to see the kangaroo before I so rudely chopped him up and turned him into a Therizinosaurs pattern) see this video: https://youtu.be/ywViyxgbPUg
If you like the lion, giraffe, wolf and other critters on the wall behind me in the video, you can find the patterns here: https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/patterns
I haven't had time to do much with my dinosaur, but I'll be working on him as time permits. Now that the basic pattern is finished, I'll start working on those feet. I will take a look at ostrich feet for some ideas, and do more research to see how other artists have imagined Therizinosaurus. I didn't realize how popular this fellow was before starting the project. but that's great, because we can use the ideas from other artists as inspiration for our own work.
If you make a dinosaur of your own, I hope you'll come to my blog and show it off. https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/dinosaur
I've always thought that so many cultures have myths about dragons because they found dinosaur bones. How else could they explain such huge creatures? And perhaps modern scientists weren't the first people to discover that dinos had feathers.
The Therizinosaurus would work well as a dragon, if his head is given a few horns, like the ones on Dracorex hogwartsia. He has a serpent-like neck, and impossibly long claws that are half as long as his arms. All he's missing ar the wings.

Paper Mache Animals - Easy Armature Patterns Extended Tutorial
Start sculpting your paper mache animals the easy way by using a custom-made armature pattern. Get life-like results for any animal, bird, lizard or fish you sculpt.
For screen shots and written instructions, go here: https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/paper-mache-armature-patterns
You don't even have to use paper mache, like I usually do. When I make an animal sculpture with clay, I start with a pattern and build the clay sculpture around it. In fact, that's how I made the original models for the animal masks and wall art behind me in the video. To see the patterns, visit this page: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
If you're new to sculpting, you might want to check out my new blog post with the 5 basic steps to making a paper mache sculpture. You can see it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/how-to-make-paper-mache
I wasn't the first person to think of the idea of starting a sculpture with the outline of the silhouette, but for some reason I have only found three other people who have taught the method in books or video. Sadly, these are fairly obscure references, and you probably won't find them mentioned anywhere else.
I found a one-sentence mention of sculpting patterns in an out of print book called "3-D Wizardry: Design in Papier Mache, Plaster and Foam." https://amzn.to/2GJmXnY
This book teaches beginners to make a recognizable portrait in clay their very first try. It's called "Sculpting Made Easy" by Catherine Barjansky. Also out of print, unfortunately. https://amzn.to/2X13LrV
And the best DVD about sculpting heads that I've ever seen is called Sculpting the Head and Face by Adam Reeder. I like it because it works. The DVD is almost impossible to find, even by searching on amazon. I don't know why... You can see it here if you're interested: https://amzn.to/2WYlC2E

Make paper mache clay smooth without sanding: https://youtu.be/Ad2iLa201kA
Ten years ago I became frustrated with traditional paper strips and paste. It took too much time to add all those layers of paper mache, and it was messy.
But I wanted to sculpt, and paper mache was the only affordable option.
That’s why I created this original (and still my favorite) recipe for paper mache clay.
It’s affordable.
It uses common ingredients that you can find at your local DIY store or Walmart.
And anyone can use it to create beautiful sculptures that we can be proud of. This is not the kind of paper mache you made back in grade school!
I put this recipe for paper mache clay on this blog and on YouTube about ten years ago. It has now been used by millions of people around the world.
You use a knife to apply paper mache clay in a really thin layer over your armature, almost like frosting a cake. It dries hard and strong, so sculptures made with it can be treasured for years.
This is the recipe I used for all the projects in my book Make Animal Sculptures with Paper Mache Clay. http://amzn.to/1nMUO3a
And this recipe is included in my FREE downloadable guide, "The 5 Best Recipes for Paper Mache." You can get your copy here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/lp-5-paper-mache-recipes

How to Make a Mask - (With Paper Mache over a Clay Model)
This video shows you how I created paper mache African mask with four layers of paper strips and Elmer's Art Paste over a clay model. Sculpting masks this way is fun, and the art paste won't mold or go bad in the bowl.
My model was a mask from the Ivory Coast that was created over 100 years ago. I was captivated by the simplicity of the original mask, and by the way the artist added just a hint of character with a slightly crooked smile. It made it feel like I was sculpting a portrait of a real person when I made the clay form.
One of the main goals of this project was to try out the Elmer's Art Paste that I told you about in my last video. I got a lot of questions about the paste. In this video I answer the two most common questions:
Can you sand it? Yes.
Can you use the Elmer's Art Paste as a substitute for the white glue in my paper mache clay recipe? No. Watch the video to find out why.
If you'd like to try out the Elmer's Art Paste, you can find it here: https://amzn.to/2S9mGkG
I do hope you'll make one of these masks. You don't need to use the Art Paste - the cooked flour and water paste is also transparent, and it would work just fine. Do a Google image search for "African Mask Dan" to see masks that are similar to the one I chose for my model. If you'd like to get started sculpting faces but you're a little nervous about "getting it right," this would be a perfect project to get you started.
The recipe for the transparent cooked flour and water paste is included in my FREE downloadable guide "The 5 Best Recipes for Paper Mache." You can get your copy here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/lp-5-paper-mache-recipes

Paper Mache Paste with No Flour. Easy, Gluten-Free, and Cheap!
Paper mache paste is usually made with flour and water, and that's the paste I normally use - but many paper mache artists can't use that recipe. They may be super-sensitive to gluten (yes, that's a thing) or they live in a very humid environment. That means they can't get paper mache paste to dry fast enough to keep mold from growing on their sculptures.
Another group of people who might be able to use an alternative to the cheap flour and water paper mache paste are teachers who want to mix up a gallon or more of paste at one time and use it over the course of a week. Unfortunately, yeast will move in, and the paste can turn into a stinky bowl of sourdough starter. Great for bread. Bad for paper mache.
But there is an easy and cheap option for paper mache paste. Elmer's Art Paste will make a gallon of paste for under $6, and it will keep a very long time with no worries about mold, yeast, or critters. And it only takes about 30 seconds to make.

The price of the little Ninja food chopper went up again after I made the video - this is the one I used: https://amzn.to/2CDCTWJ
Some of the other choppers I looked at are less expensive, but they have fewer blades than the Ninja, so I don't know if they'd work as well. Of course, it's possible that they work better - but I can't buy them all to find out. If you have a different brand, let us know if it works or not.
This recipe should work well for folks who live in areas with lots of critters who are attracted to the flour in the original recipe. Suzan also says that she has some old paper mache clay from last year, still damp in the bowl, and there's no mold.

Painting a Paper Mache Pig
In this video I show you how I quickly painted my paper mache pig. The pattern had already been cut out and taped together, and the expression had been added with small bits of aluminum foil and a hot glue gun.
After one layer of paper mache was dry, it was time to paint him, and hang him on my wall.

You can use any brand of acrylic varnish you happen to like. It will protect the paint surface, and it makes it easier to wipe the dust off piggie's nose.

Paper Mache Pig Made With Easy Pattern
You can download the pattern for a paper mache pig wall sculpture at https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/pig
To see all the other patterns I've designed, go to https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/patterns
In this video I told you about my own experiences with two lovely piggies, Max and Sparky, that I once knew. They inspired the happy smile that's built into this pattern. It took me about a month to complete the original sculpture, design the pattern, and write the instructions (and make these videos), but it won't take you much time at all to make a pig using the pattern.
Give yourself about an hour to cut out the pattern and tape it together. Take another thirty minutes to add an expression to your pig's face. There's another video showing you how to do that here:
Then add one layer of paper mache and let it dry overnight. The next day, you can paint it, and it will be ready to hang on your wall - or on the wall of someone you know who loves pigs as much as I do.
Use this easy 3-D pattern to create a happy paper mache pig. This wall sculpture will be treasured by anyone who loves the Charlotte's web book or movie.
The other two videos are here:

Paint a Paper Mache Cow with Acrylic Paint
My daughter, Jessie Rasche, painted a paper mache Jersey cow sculpture made from my armature pattern. It really brings out the subtle changes in the shapes, and look completely different from my Holstein cow.
Be sure to visit Jessie's website to see her landscape paintings here: https://jessiesfineart.com/
For a complete transcript of the video with screen shots and a list of the colors she used, go to https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/painting-a-jersey-cow
To see the armature pattern that was used to make the jersey cow mask or wall sculpture, go to: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/cow-mask
And to see more downloadable armature patterns for paper mache, go to: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
I learned three new things from Jessie's video that I didn't know before:
Jessie started painting her paper mache Jersey cow sculpture with acrylic gesso. She told me that one purpose of the gesso is to create a nice white ground, but another important reason she uses it is because the paint isn't absorbed as much, so she doesn't have to use as much paint.
Jessie paints every day. Some of her canvases are really big, and professional artists' acrylic paint is expensive. You can see why she'd want to use as little as possible!
She also saves her paint from one painting session to the next using a Sta-Wet Palette. The sponge at the bottom and the air-tight cover keeps her paint from drying out. You can see the palette on amazon.com here: https://amzn.to/2PhFsAJ
And I've already ordered the brush she's using in the video to make fast fur marks. You can see it on amazon here: https://amzn.to/2U6e7Fc
Be sure to leave a comment for Jessie!

Paper Mache Cow Mask Made with Easy Pattern
If you'd like to know more, you can find the pattern at https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/cow-mask
If you'd like to check out that video about applying paper strips and paste so they lie down nice and smooth, you can find it here: https://youtu.be/sjllW9Xpkow
This mask pattern was challenging to create, simply because of that large flat area on the side of her jaw. In the video I show you the easy solution I found (eventually!). Once that little problem was solved, this is one of the easiest patterns I've made so far.
The nose does have a lot of darts that need to be cut out and taped together, so you'll need to be patient for a few minutes. After that, the pieces go together really fast. And that 'wire' made with aluminum foil is fun to make, too. It's an inexpensive replacement for armature wire, although it's a lot softer. It's perfect for this mask pattern.

Adding Paper Strips And Paste to Paper Mache
In this video I show you how to apply paper strips and paste to your paper mache sculpture (or mask, in this case) in a way that will make it as smooth as possible. That way, it will be almost ready to paint as soon as it's dry.
I previously made a video showing you how to make your paper mache sculpture smoother, in case your paper mache doesn't come out exactly the way you want it to. Then I made another one, that's actually better - You can find that video here: https://youtu.be/Ad2iLa201kA
Although that video shows a sculpture made with paper mache clay, the method works just as well for making paper strips and paste smooth without sanding.
To download the free PDF "The 5 Best Recipes for Paper Mache," which includes the raw flour and water paste that I used in this video, you can find it here: https://goo.gl/7BvpZ5
(Or click on the link in the sidebar of my website).
The patterns for the masks and wall art behind me in the video can be found here: https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/patterns
To make your paper mache go on as nicely as possible, follow these main tips:
Use newspaper, because it's a very soft paper that molds itself to the underlying form when it's wet.
Tear the paper instead of cutting it.
If a piece doesn't lay flat, tear it in the right spots so it doesn't wrinkle.
Use small pieces over complex shapes.
And use a knife or your fingers to push the paper onto the form to remove all air bubbles and push the extra paste out from under the paper.
Have fun! And come visit me, at https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com

Make A Folk Art Bunny with Air Dry Clay
This little bunny was a delight to make. It took almost no time, and I got to play around with a new product (the DAS Modeling Clay). Plus, I got to buy a Bun Foot - it's a silly thing to call it, and that makes me happy for some reason. It's really just a wooden foot for a couch or very low table, and they come in a lot of shapes and sizes. My local Lowes had a few styles, and you can find more on Amazon.com. '
You can use my pattern, or make your own. With a project like this one, simple is best. You can download my pattern at https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/folk-art-bunny
I also have patterns for the masks and wall art that you see behind me in the video. You can find them here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/patterns
If you'd like to use the DAS Modeling Clay instead of paper mache, you can find it on amazon: https://amzn.to/2y3C7OZ
And you can see all the bun foot styles they have here: https://amzn.to/2NUWmcJ
