T Rex Mask Pattern for Paper Mache - Putting it Together
See the second video in this series here: https://youtu.be/c9fQF1mVbNs
🦖My new T-Rex mask pattern for paper mache is easier than some of the patterns I've made because it has numbers along the edges - like a papercraft pattern but without the tabs. However, there are a lot of pieces so you'll need some time, five cereal boxes - and patience. 😄
In this video I show you a few of the steps, but most of the instructions come with the pattern itself. Just print out the pattern, put it on cereal box cardboard or light chipboard, cut them out and tape them together. Then reinforce the lips with crumpled foil and masking tape, and glue on the teeth.
When all the pattern pieces are put together, you can add some details with foil, like I show you in the next video, then cover it with paper mache. You can paint your T-Rex any color you want.
There is a small charge for the pattern. You can download it now from my website: https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/t-rex-mask
If you make a T-Rex mask (or anything else with paper mache) I hope you'll show it off on the Daily Sculptors page on my site. Have fun! 😄

T Rex Mask Pattern - the Paper Mache and Finishing Techniques
See the first video in this series here: https://youtu.be/ybC0qxo31Uk
🦖When all the pattern pieces of your T-Rex mask are put together, you can add some details to your T-Rex mask with foil, like I show you in this next video, then cover it with paper mache. You don't have to add the bumps and ridges that I did - or you could get really crazy and add lots more bumps and ridges. It's totally up to you.
I used the pointy teeth and sculpted them with some Magic Sculpt I already had, but you could use the realistic cardboard teeth, instead.
I painted my T-Rex fast, using the brown paper as the first color, but you can paint your mask any color you want.
There is a small charge for the pattern. You can download it now from my website: https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/t-rex-mask

Jonni's Paper Mache Studio
How much room do you need to make paper mache sculptures? Not much - my studio is in a corner of the laundry room. My old studio was in a larger room, and the extra space made it harder for me to keep everything organized. This smaller space is actually working better for me.
Do you ever go to the store to buy something for your latest project, even though you know you already have one - but you just can't find it? Yeah, I've done that...
Or do you have a great system for keeping track of everything? If you have some organizing tips for us, I hope you'll leave a comment.

Update for Paper Cement Clay - Experimental Outdoor Paper Mache Clay
The toad I made with paper cement clay back in July has now been outside for four months. He's been rained on and now he's had a few days of snow in 10°F weather, so it's time to check up on him and see how he's doing.
Right now he's sitting on a concrete bench by my front door so I can keep an eye on him, even when we get a lot more snow. So far, he's doing fine. The sealer I used has not cracked or yellowed in the sun, and the toad's spots are still the same color they were when I finished him. No softness or damage to the paper cement clay either, and that's really promising. If he's still doing this well in the spring, we can stop calling the paper cement clay an experimental recipe, and go ahead and make our outside sculptures with confidence.

If you remember watching Red Skelton when you were younger, do you think he was really having as much fun as he seemed to be having on TV? It sure looked like he enjoyed his job, didn't it? I read on Wikipedia yesterday that he probably made more money selling his clown paintings than he did from his years on vaudeville, stage and TV.

The sudden cold snap really slowed me down this month. My daughter came out to help me replace the old windows on the north side of my house (she's a nice kid 😊) and my neighbor took some of the extra squash and tomatoes I had to quickly harvest from my garden. I know I'm not the only one who got caught off-guard by all the crazy weather, including that huge hurricane in Florida. I hope you're well, and that you now have a little more time to get ready for the holidays.
I'm trying to think of some fun projects for Christmas. Would you prefer decoration-type projects, or things that could be given as gifts? Let me know in the comments below.

Dragon Mask Pattern for Paper Mache
Yes, I just made a dragon wall sculpture pattern a few weeks ago, but if you can't get out in the garden to shovel compost, why not make a dragon mask, instead? 😊
EDIT: This morning I decided to see what it would look like as a water dragon - lots of blues and greens. I think I like it better, but let me know what you think. If you'd like to make a dragon mask with my pattern, and see both the red and blue versions, you can find it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/dragon-mask

Dragon Head Pattern for Paper Mache
I've been working on the pattern and instructions for a paper mache dragon head for over a month, and it's finally done. If you'd like to make a dragon with my pattern, you can download it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/dragon-pattern
If you visit that page you can also see videos for putting all the pattern pieces together, how to make custom horns and spikes, and how to add paper strips and paste to the dragon, in case you'd like to do it that way instead of using paper mache clay. You can also watch my video that shows you how to make optional scales using my DIY silky-smooth air dry clay recipe.
The dragon isn't hard to make, but be sure to give yourself plenty of time if you're making one for a present. There are quite a few pieces to cut out and tape together, and paper mache takes time to dry.
In today's video, I'll show you how I painted my white dragon, but I'm also sharing a great idea I got from my daughter, Jessie Rasche. She has an easy way to decide what colors and color patterns you want to use for your dragon before you actually start painting it. I intend to use her method when I paint my next dragon.
I can't decide if I want my next dragon to be all red and white, or if I'll paint him with the beautiful greens and blues on the Chinese water dragon lizard. It's easy to make another one, because I can just cut out the pieces and tape them together - so maybe I can make a green on and a red one... Why not? 😊
🐲 If you make a dragon with this pattern, I'd love to see it. So would the regular visitors to my website, so please come back to my site and show it off on the Daily Sculptors page. https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page

The video for my Silky Smooth Air Dry Clay recipe: https://youtu.be/YOiovGN-yHA
The written version of the recipe on my website: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/new-air-dry-clay-recipe
If you're sculpting a dragon, lizard, snake or fish, and you'd like a reasonably fast way to make the scales, try this method. It isn't nearly as precise as sculpting every single scale individually with small sculpting tools, but it is faster. And at a distance you see really nice shadow lines around all the scales, too.
But it's still going to take some time. If you're wondering if this would work with a store-bought brand of air dry clay, I really don't know. The only way to find out is try it. You might want to test it first, just to make sure the clay won't come loose from the base of the sculpture after it dries.
This time I used brown paper and cooked flour and water paste for the first layer, before adding the air dry clay. The air dry clay will stick to dried paper mache clay, too. The brown paper is just unbleached newspaper, that's found in some boxes from amazon.com. I use it because it looks better in a video. Newspaper works just fine.

Toad And Dragon Update
NOTE - The dragon head pattern is now finished, and you can see it here: https://youtu.be/299S-32bnLo
The toad got wet, but is still doing fine - so far. And the dragon pattern is in the works...
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I'm not putting the toad and his leaf casting directly on the ground. That would be like making a bowl-shaped item out of the paper cement clay and filling it with water. I think it would be an unfair experiment to have him stay wet for weeks at a time. He's sitting on the landscape cloth that I'm using to kill some invasive grass around the strawberries, instead.
The sealer I used for the toad is holding up well, too, even in strong sunlight, which can damage almost anything. It's Rustoleum Matte Clear Enamel, and I gave the toad two coats.
You can find the first video about making the toad here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/toad
If you'd like to experiment with the new paper cement clay recipe, you can find it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/weatherproof-paper-mache-clay
To learn about the "primordial fear" theory about dragons, watch The Invention of Dragons video (The beginning is silly, but check his show notes for the academic articles he used.) https://youtu.be/6grLJyqIM8E
The only videos I can find linking dragons with dinos appear to have a strong religious angle, and they suggest that dinosaurs and people lived at the same time. If that idea interests you, they're easy to find on YouTube.
However, my theory is that people found bones of dead and fossilized dinos, which is a totally different thing. There are lots of videos about fossil hunters walking around and finding fossils on the ground. Or just do an online search for "boy finds dinosaur."
I found one other theory - that there was once a creature (not a dinosaur) that lived after people arrived. The video doesn't give much detail, and I don't know ... it's interesting, but I'll wait for more proof before I believe it. However, if there was a large flying lizard it explains why dragons have bat wings. The theory that dragons illustrate our primordial fears doesn't mention monkeys being afraid of bats. 😊https://youtu.be/5zoARHhX6oc
And this video tells us about a real dinosaur (yi qi ) that could have inspired two-legged dragons (wyverns). It's a bird-like creature with bat wings: https://youtu.be/Gnt5wIVjFS0

Painting The Paper Cement Clay Toad
The paper cement clay toad is all painted, sealed, and glued to the leaf, and he's now ready to go outside for our year-long experiment.
We received a ton of votes about what to call the new recipe, and "paper cement clay" was a clear winner. People liked it because it says exactly what it is, so that's what I'll be calling it from now on. But remember - it's still experimental until we've had a chance to see how well it holds up through both summer and winter weather.

Leaf Casting Made With Weatherproof Paper Mache Clay
I made this leaf casting because I'm still experimenting with the new recipe for a weatherproof paper mache clay. In the last video I showed you some small sample pieces I made, just to see what would happen with this new cement-based material if I left it sitting in water. The results looked promising, so now I'm making a sculpture that will be left in the garden all summer and winter, to see if it survives.
The leaf was made because I'm also making a toad, and it needs a base to keep me from breaking him when I move it around. He'll show up in the next video.
I want to thank everyone who made comments and suggestions on the last video, and I know there will be some great ideas in the comments on this video, too. I've learned so much from reading all your thoughts and idea, so keep them coming!

Weatherproof Paper Mache Clay for Outdoor Sculptures - an Experiment
I have two new experimental recipes for weatherproof paper mache clay, inspired by the giant outdoor pots made by Warren Eggleton back in 2013. I changed his recipe a little, to make sure it would come out exactly the same every time, but it's essentially the usual paper mache clay recipe with Portland cement added to it.
The videos I made when experimenting with the new paper cement clay:
A leaf casting: https://youtu.be/4RSWObvnFgI
Starting a toad sculpture: https://youtu.be/HWq_aH5cE5c
The finished toad, painted and sealed: https://youtu.be/b28VJwvbeOk
Be sure to read Warren's post to see how his pots were made and how he sealed them: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/pots
For text versions of both recipe, visit this page: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/weatherproof-paper-mache-clay
I made two recipes, one that contains the drywall joint compound, and one that doesn't. I tested them both by allowing small sculptures to cure for about a week, and then put them in a bowl of water for a day or two. They didn't soften at all after all that time in the water, but they did get wet. These are not waterproof paper mache clay - but it doesn't look like water will damage the finished sculptures. We still have to seal them, though, because they will get damaged if they get wet and then go through several cycles of freezing and thawing.
I also tested the recipes to see how long we could continue sculpting with the mixtures before they got hard in the bowl, and I had more than three hours of work time in my house at 76° F (24.4 C with both recipes. Warren tells us that we'll have less time to play with it in hotter weather.
I bought my 46 lb bag of Portland cement at my local Lowes. Most DIY stores should carry it. I got the normal grey variety. There is white cement, too, but there wasn't any available locally.
If you try either of the recipes, please come back and let us know how they turned out. If you'd like to show them off or tell us more about them, you can post images of your projects here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page

DIY Foam Rock Base For Blue Footed Booby Sculpture
The blue-footed booby sculpture is finally finished! And I got to play with a hot wire tool - I have been looking for an excuse to buy one for years. It was fun - but I'll never do it inside the house again, and I made some newby mistakes. But I think the blue-footed boobies look good on their new rock. 😊

Painting The Blue Footed Boobies
The blue-footed boobies finally got their blue feet! The weather (and the garden) slowed down this project, but now it's almost done. The two boobies need a base, which I'll do right after I do a little more digging.
Make sure you watch the first video in this series if you'd like to see how I make sure a bird sculpture can stand up on it's own two feet. https://youtu.be/mQuIxsv0gEA
And check out the adorable Puffin that was made using that technique - it really does work 😊 : https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/puffin
The second video about sculpting the boobies with my Silky Smooth Air Dry Clay recipe is here: https://youtu.be/lBKClTD2Ns0

Sculpting Blue Footed Boobies Part 2 - Adding Air Dry Clay
Previous video, building the Blue-Footed Booby armature: https://youtu.be/mQuIxsv0gEA
The blue-footed boobies' feet still aren't blue yet, but we're getting there. In the previous video I created the armature for the lady booby, and showed you how to create a wire sling with the legs and feet so she can stand up without a base. In this video, you can see how the feathers, beak and air dry clay was added to both Mr and Mrs Booby. Next time, they'll both have blue feet.
After they're painted, they'll need a base because Mr Booby is balanced on just one foot. I used a suggestion from our friend Eileen Gallagher to help him stand up - there's an extra wire that will be fitted into a hole in the base. I'll show you how that works when I make the base itself. If you have any ideas for a design for the base or how they should be displayed, let me know in the comments below. 😊

Sculpt a Blue Footed Booby Balancing On Two Feet
I got started on my Blue-Footed Booby sculpture this week. She's now got her body, wings and feet, but the feathers and air dry clay will be in the next video. You can now see the next video here: https://youtu.be/lBKClTD2Ns0
I started this project to show you how to balance any bird sculpture on just two feet. This is a big challenge for a lot of sculptors, but I think my solution will work for almost any type of bird. I've used the same system with a baby chick and with a life-sized dodo, and it worked for both of them.,
Here are the links I mentioned in the video. If I forgot one, please let me know. 😊

Painting The Paper Mache Moose With Latex Paint
I used big brushes and latex paint to finish my paper mache moose, and I really like the way it came out. (In fact, I think I said that about seven times in the video. 😊 )
Watch Jessie's video to see why she chose these particular Sherwin Williams paints and to see her mixing up cool and warm browns and greys:
https://youtu.be/bnDXY5nfckw
If you'd like to make a moose with my pattern, you can find it here: https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/moose-pattern
The colors I used for used for the moose are Sherwin Williams paint that Jessie bought at Lowes:
Sweet Cardamom (the orange-brown color)
Tuxedo (the dark inky color)
Newport Gray (very dark teal)
Dusky Morn (the lightest color, a warm light gray)
The "grainer brush" that I used to paint all that fur: https://amzn.to/3F1ewAJ (affiliate link)
If you make a moose, be sure to come to my website and show it off. We'd all love to see it. https://www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page

Mix Brown and Gray Fur Colors in Latex Paint
In this video, my daughter, Jessie Rasche, shows us how to use just four colors of latex paint to get a wide range of brown and gray fur colors. For reference, she used a photo of a moose with a lot of different colors on his face, which could also be used for a wolf, rabbit or deer. Her colors ranged from cool to warm, light to dark, and grey to brown - a great mix for wildlife art.
If you'd like more in-depth training in color mixing, she has a color workshop (and a special discount) here: https://jessierasche.com/jonni/
In this video she shows us how she painted a goose: https://youtu.be/_DZrmdJ2Tpg
And here's a video about drawing from your imagination: https://youtu.be/_awQJKHI3sA
Her 'color theory 101" video will be up shortly. Subscribe to her channel to make sure you don't miss it. 😊
The brush Jessie is using to play with the colors on the brown paper is called a 'grainer brush.' You can find it on amazon.com here: https://amzn.to/3F1ewAJ (affiliate link)
If you'd like to see how I used these colors to paint my moose, you can see that new video here: https://youtu.be/q4tgKGS5FP8
The colors she used in this video are Sherwin Williams paint that she bought at Lowes:
Sweet Cardamom (the orange-brown color)
Tuxedo (the dark inky color)
Newport Gray (very dark teal)
Dusky Morn (the lightest color, a warm light gray)
By the way, there are articles all over the internet that say that the sample colors you buy at the paint store are "not real paint."
So I called our local Lowes and asked them if that's true. And no, it's not.
The nice lady at Lowes said she uses exactly the same base and pigments to mix the sample sizes as she does to mix up the quarts and gallons. It's exactly the same paint. Is that true for every brand or every paint store? We don't know, so be sure to ask when you're buying your samples.
My video about painting the moose with Jessie's latex colors is coming soon. You can find the moose pattern on my website at https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/moose-pattern

The Moose Pattern Is Done
Before I started working on this pattern for a paper mache moose, I didn't realize how many bumps and ridges they have on their heads. When you combine the strange shapes, the big antlers and upside-down nostrils, and a dewlap hanging below his throat for no apparent reason, Mr. Moose is wonderfully weird.
This is not a fast project, even with the pattern, but I think you'll love your moose when he's done. You can download the pattern for a small charge here:
https://www.UltimatePaperMache.com/moose-pattern
You'll see four videos on that page (and another one coming soon) so you can see how all the pieces are put together, and how to customize your moose so he looks just like you want him to.
