I had originally set out to go around Nantucket Shoals so as to avoid cutting through via the Great Round Shoal Channel. But after getting sent back by bad weather, I decided this time to just chance the channel, once again. Transiting in daylight this time, I noticed a lot of tide rips by the "8" red bell, no doubt what I had heard coming through there last fall, and what scared me so. I wonder if the shoal has moved some? Nonetheless, I made it through for fast run across the Gulf of Maine. Twelve hours of Force 7 on the nose was enough to convince me that had I made the wrong decision too late. After having the you know what scared out of me on my last transit through the Great Round Shoal Channel, from the Atlantic into Vineyard Sound, this time I opt for the safer route out to Nantucket Light and then north to Maine. This route adds a fair bit of distance, but the present weather maps show reasonably good conditions for the passage. Two days later I am plagued by light and variable winds. I am anchor down in Tarpaulin Cove, on Vineyard Sound, six days out of Beaufort, NC. That was not without a struggle, though. Had to beat into brisk NE winds, and then fight the flooding current to get to Tarpaulin. But after some rest I am treated to a glorious beam reach across Buzzards Bay to visit my friend Chris in Padanaram. Padanaram presents a challenge to the engineless sailor, as it is not only crowded, but there are many expensive, classic yachts moored there as well. The price of a mistake could be ruinous. In the last episode I was preparing to depart the Cape Lookout Bight, in anticipation of a fair weather passage to Buzzards Bay, MA. Like a dance cadence this passage goes from screaming reaches to ghosting in the faintest of winds. There's been more slow's than quick's, however, and it's looking like it's going to be nine days all told to get to Beaufort, NC, from Big Pine Key, FL. A nice afternoon of sailing, following my departure from Big Pine Key, Florida, ends in near calm conditions which persist through the night. Unfortunately I had not yet made into the swift Gulf Stream Current, so progress is slow. Though no longer needing to sail to Key West for customs clearance, still I would like to fill a propane tank and enjoy a night or two on the town. I have spent time in Key West before, but in my opinion it is not a place for a long term stay on a boat unless you are staying at a marina. Lack of shelter, poor holding, and ferocious winter cold fronts make for a lively time best avoided in my opinion. Luckily Newfound Harbor, a little over 20 miles away, provides much more security when the weather turns foul. The wind is not fair all the way to Rodriguez Key, so I drop anchor off of Key Largo for the night to catch up on some needed rest after crossing the Strait of Florida. I find out that I do not need to go to Key West to clear in to the United States, I can use the CBP Roam app so long as I purchase a user-fee decal (about $30 USD). So I do that and ... my application gets rejected! I believe that one day I shall see South Riding Rocks with my own eyes. But not this time, which is now the third time that I have exited the Bahama Bank in the dark, relying on my chart plotter for safe passage. I departed Bullocks harbor bright and early, mind you, and with moderate southeasterly winds forecast I should have been at South Riding Rocks by sundown. But once again the wind evaporated in the afternoon, leaving me to drift while valuable time slipped away. I arrive in the Berry Islands following an overnight passage from Eleuthera. I drop anchor behind Little Harbor Cay, a beautiful spot, but rather unprotected from the forecasted brisk westerly winds. So I sail around to the anchorage between Devils Cay and Hoffmans Cay, which offers better shelter. This turns out to be quite a challenging day for the engineless sailor. While enjoying the idyllic anchorage of Ten Bay, Eleuthera, per usual I took a gander at the GRIB files and spotted what looked like an excellent weather window to sail to the Berry Islands in a few days time. Forty eight hours later that window collapses on me utterly. What's worse is a forecast for light and variable winds preceding fresh northwesterlies, and there are few nearby anchorages offering any shelter. Arriving in Rock Sound, Eleuthera, first order of business is to find a fresh water tap and a grocery store. The former I find at Wild Orchid Restaurant, and as I courtesy I eat lunch there after filling my jerry cans. Hearing a Bee Gees song on the radio reminds me of the last time I was in the Bahamas, way back in 1977-78, when my father took the family there in his Contest 31 Wind Rose. The most detailed memories I have of that trip comes to me through the popular music I recall from the time. I put in to Cat Island because I was too tired to carry on to Rock Sound, and it turned out to be a gem of a spot. No sooner did I have my anchor down when I was greeted by a subscriber who filled me in on where I could buy groceries and take on some fresh water. With my provisioning worries put to rest, I earned some "free time" to enjoy this stunningly beautiful spot. I anchor behind Long Cay, in the Acklin Islands, to wait out a pulse of northerly winds. With the exception of a few fishing boats, and one other yacht, the place is deserted. I plan for a two-day passage to Rock Sound, Great Eluthera, but opt for an overnight to Cat Island first. I am visited by some rare sea creatures on the way. A spell of light winds has slowed my progress, but soon the trades fill back in and by the dawn's early light of Feb. 7, 2023, I have Great Inagua in sight.
