A fair wind and it's time to put to sea! Instead of sailing into doldrums in the lee of Puerto Rico, which is what happened to me last time, I attempt to sail north up the west coast using local breezes until I reach the easterly trades coming over the north coast. I arrive at the deserted anchorage of Gilligan's Island, on the south coast of Puerto Rico. No sign of Ginger or Mary Ann, so I press on to Boqueron, on the west coast, and then to Puerto Real. Needing to water up and provision before heading to the Bahamas, conveniently the marina has rental cars. Following some rest, relaxation, re-provisioning and repairs made in Culebra, it's time to go cruising! The wind evaporates entirely making for a night of flat calm--not wind, nor breath, nor motion. The morning of December 14 dawns fair with the first few breaths of the trade wind arriving with the golden rays of the morning sun. So far I am pleased with the performance of the Boothby-modified-Hasler self-steering arrangement, but now I would like to get some numbers to back up my opinions. I present the first in series of tests, comparing the traditional Hasler with Boothby-Hasler. Wind and waves have subsided quite a bit, so I decide to pull out the sextant and take a few moon shots. I divert west of the classic sailing route from the US East Coast to the Caribbean, hoping to avoid an area of strong winds resulting from a low pressure system to the southeast. I am confident that I will be able to work my way east further down the track, before encountering the easterly trade winds. Nonetheless the brisk winds arrive, and while filming my little ship romping through the white capped sea the poetry of John Masefield comes to mind. Putting to sea at last! After more than a month of making preparations, poring over weather files, fretting and pacing, the anchor is up and the little ship is making her way out of the Chesapeake Bay. Brisk northerlies greet us outside, becoming moderate NE as we enter the Gulf Stream the following day. Light airs and headwinds nearly stall progress for a day while the swift current sets us off to the northeast. I spend several weeks anchored in the Hampton river (Virginia) looking at weather files, hoping to find a long enough break in the onslaught of early winter cold fronts to get across the Gulf Stream. The typical departure date from the US East Coast to the Caribbean is November 1, and it is now late November. The general plan is to be in Puerto Rico for Christmas. I am headed for Deltaville, but after slogging to windward for 20 miles I call it quits and put into Poquoson. I do continue on to Deltaville, though in gentler conditions, arriving there on Halloween. Deltaville, however, is not an ideal take-off point for the passage south to Puerto Rico, so I will move further south to Hampton which is better situated. Hadleys Harbor is a wonderful, well sheltered spot. Problem is, there's no place to buy stores. So for that I sail to Padanaram. Now I might just stay on my friend Chris' guest mooring in Padanaram while waiting for weather to jump offshore to the Chesapeake Bay, but Padanaram is not so good in strong southeasterlies, which are forecast ahead of an approaching front. For those of you who have complained that HtSO is no longer end to end sailing footage with some commentary, as it was at the beginning, well ... here you go. Given the natural paucity of fair winds for sailing to the southwest, I decide to attempt the trip in one hop, which turns into a 34-hour long slog to windward. I reach the famous tourist town of Bar Harbor and find the anchorage on the northwest side satisfactory. I am able to provision at the nearby Hannaford supermarket before sailing across Frenchman Bay to the wide but sparsely populated Flanders Bay. On account of persistent light winds I remain anchored there for several days, during which I entertain some thoughts on the importance of working while you sail. After days of laying at anchor, a seabreeze finally fills in enough for me to exit the St. George River and sail around to Rockland, Maine. The stop in Rockland is a short one, just long enough to re-provision and take on water, as another round of moderate southerlies are forecast, a good wind for making my destination of Roque Island, Maine. Never let a good wind go to waste, but the fog closes in thick and I shall be sailing through the night to reach Roque. As if there is some sort of conservation principle of technological troubles, one problem is solved just as another emerges. At least my hunch on the Isotherm refrigeration unit was correct. A new start controller has it purring like a kitten. But then the AIS transponder stops working ...
