Grateful Dead [1080p Remaster] Dead Ahead - Radio City Music Hall - New York City - (October 1980)
My personal remaster of Dead Ahead
I did this a while back and just noticed it was never published, so the workflow is a bit outdated (like a lot, but whatever)
For sure an upgrade over what exists.
Thanks everyone !!!

This is our full audio and video remaster of:
Grateful Dead
September 10, 1990
The Spectrum

Audio notes:
Charlie Miller's SBD master. (lineage below)
VIdeo notes:
1080P/60FPS (converted from the original 480i/29.97 lineage below
Workflow is too varied and extensive, will try to spell it out better when we get to writing the text files on these. It's a lot of video editing both by myself and by Josh.
Whatever the lineage says, it doesn't give credit to Leej / Lazy Cow for the actual recording, I'm not sure if there's some kind of "beef" there, but I think it's bad taste to call this you own "production" without noting the person who actually FILMED this show. (or to even call a tape transfer a "production" .. but let's get over the semantics for now. Thanks to the cow (for most of this run, in fact) -- I still posted all prior lineage below.
We're remastering the entire Fall 1990 run here, just like we did with 1991 last year
This is a massive undertaking, we got about a month head-start just to try to keep up with how much of a time investment this one was going to be. Enjoy!

Red Rocks Amphitheater

Dead were better in colorado than fish ... ijs...
Audio notes: This is the same SBD that kevin tobin used in his transfer and audio tracking of this tape was remuxed here -- it's the best soundboard out there. :) No reason to change.
Audio lineage is below.
VIdeo notes: This is pretty cool, Josh did some really good color correction on this and i was able to make it really pop. The rocks are actually red now :D and the 60 frames per second is buttery.
I dig it, even though it's kinda far away
This one gets 4.5 on the video even with the distance IMO
5.0 on the SBD
:)

Grateful Dead [1080p Remaster] April 11, 1987 - UIC Pavilion - Chicago, IL [SBD: Miller]
This is an audio and video remaster of:
Grateful Dead
April 11, 1987
UIC Pavilion
Chicago, IL
Audio notes:
Replaced soundtrack with Charlie Miller's 24-bit UltramatrixSBD 24-bit master (lineage below)
Video notes:
It's kind of washed out and has some luma/chroma shifting thorooughout that i couldn't take care of, but it's still a really good video. should be possible in the future to come back to this one and get it a little better. the shifting is something that will be easier in a year or two as computer tech keeps advancing (it would take weeks to correct right now... the "halos" and color shifts around jerry, that type of sutff)

Not the best, not the worst :) The video is smooth and stable almost 100% through and through but the overall quality of the materail was a non-starter for pulling a TON of detail back out of this video.. It's not exactly a masterpiece, but it's a great show and very watchable.

Grateful Dead [1080p Restoration] - June 21, 1983 - Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia, Maryland
This is an audio and video remaster of:
Grateful Dead
Merriweather Post Pavilion
Columbia, Maryland
06/21/83
Audio notes:
Replaced soundtrack with Scott clugston's 16-bit FLAC SBD master (charlie miller transfer) (lineage below)
Video notes:
1080p, spatial and temporal denoising, way too much work for this video but hey, might as well try.
This still looks pretty terrible but 1983 videos aren't exactly flying out of the sky, so we strap the best audio we can find onto it, polish the turd as hard as possible, and have a real good time.
As noted in lineage, there was an attempt to stabilitze this video before we ever touched it. Although i can get rid of SOME of the crawling in teh background, it's all heavily baked in, so enjoy it for what it is. it's not perfect, never will be, but it's good enough video to compliment the audio :)

Garcia & Grisman
12-7-91
Warfield Theater

Pro Shot
Video notes:
This was taped by Justin Kreutzmann and thanks to him for letting us work on it and post our little remaster to youtube!
What can I say, this is the closest thing to a "pro shot" that exists for 90's JGB other than 9-1-90, which is the most popular dead related video on this page.
I'm not sure on source. One issue I will note here is that it was already deinterlaced, so there are jagged lines through stuff that is in motion at times (especially arms and hands)
This is the main reason i prefer to get all videos in their original format (usually 720x480 interlaced 29.97 NTSC for things made in the USA... Deinterlacing in most commercial programs and most hardware based deincterlacing is still lacking a bit in 2022, and it is still a bit of an artform to do it properly... the process is destructive, so there's not a good way for me to "fill in those blanks."
Either way, this is super amazing video. :) (Interlacing rant off)
Run time: 54 minutes 27 seconds
Audio notes:
Josh got us together a wonderful matrix that we both thought was considerably better than the available SBD we have for thsi show. I don't often choose a matrix, but on this one it wasn't even close IMO. (known lineage is below for both video and audio)

This is an "attempt to repair"
Jerry Garcia & David Grisman
August 25, 1991
Goldcoast Concert Bowl
Squaw Valley, CA
_______________
Audio notes:
Retained the soundtrack in lineage below, it's the only one, and it's very good (and one of the only reasons we tackled this one)
Video notes:
It's still very overexposed, maybe with time we could do more but there was a lot of work to get it where it's at right now, there was almost zero color at all. Both josh and I took our own cracks at tweaking it and trying to balance the levels out, it's just a task for another time because I can say this already looks 200% better than before (and look at what that got us) ... I think maybe using a LUT on this one in the future could help and a frame-by-frame adjustment to brightness/contrast. I'll come back to this one someday probably.

Retained the soundtrack from camera 1 release that Kevin Tobin used as it is the best choice for this video.
Video notes:
We used two video sources to make a multi-cam out of this one, camera 2 doesn't start until cold rain and snow.
All video deinterlaced properly to 59.94 fps PROGRESSIVE and then the rest of the editing was done and scaled to 1080p60. The usual "everything but the kitchen ssink " approach to get a 1080p60 video out of old tape transfers.

Notes:
-Video capture is semi unknown ... dvd came as a Peanut Production DVD
-Audience audio downloaded from LossLess Legs with many thanks
-Audio synchronization by Kevin Tobin using Adobe Audition to
compress/expand the audio in multitrack mode to match the original audio.
-Video patches created with Ulead VideoStudio 9 by Kevin Tobin.
-Multiplexing via TMPGEnc MPEG Editor by Kevin Tobin.
-DVD authoring via DVD Architect 3 by Kevin Tobin.
Audio\Video Patches:
1) Start of second set was missing 26 seconds of video which were filled in graphics.
2) Franklin's Tower was cut after 1 minute and 30 seconds ... no graphics were added even though I thought about finishing the song in normal BHP fashion but as DVD was already at 98% ... decided to leave as it was.
3) Soundboard which ran a shade slow was synced to video - rate was about .5 seconds per minute.
4) When I originally saw the Peanut Production version of this dvd, I didn't plan on working on it as I figured that Jeff's audio sounded fairly good. Closer listening showed many audio cutouts on the original dvd almost making a sound upgrade necessary and that is all I did ... thanks to Peanut Production and the Lazy Cow people for making the original dvd available.
