Wat Phu Man Fah - Angkor Wat Copy? - Sihanakhon Temple Complex Buriram Thailand 2024
Wat Phu Man Fa is a massive temple being built in Buriram Thailand. This temple has caused some controversy due to its resemblance to Angkor Wat.
Construction started several years ago on a piece of land covering 200 Rai (roughly 100 acres). It features several stone buildings built in the Khmer style. Its resemblance to Angkor Wat has caused a great deal of controversy and the #SaveAngkorWat hastag.
The head Abbot that is the vision behind the project said the styling came to him in a dream. He believes that he was a soldier that was part of the construction of the original Angkor Wat and now is continuing now after entering the monk hood.
The controversy drew the attention of Cambodian officials that were invited to inspect the site. It’s been agreed that it has design elements of many different sites like Phimai and others and is not a direct copy of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The temple construction continues and is really amazing to see. It’s being built on a scale that is not seen anymore in modern temples. It’s estimated to take generations to be completed.
For additional reading here is some additional reading on the temple.

Prasat Muang Tam - The Lower City - 11th Century Khmer Temple - Buriram Thailand 2024
Prasat Muang Tam ปราสาทเมืองต่ำ meaning 'lowland castle'. It is a Khmer Hindu Temple in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province Thailand.
It is primarily in the Khleang and Baphuon styles, which dates its primary phases of construction to the late-10th and early-11th centuries. The primary deity was Shiva, although Vishnu was also worshipped there.
Muang Tam sits at the base of Phnom Rung hill, beside a kilometer-long reservoir (baray). It was built in the tenth or eleventh century and probably abandoned in the thirteenth century.
People only returned to the area in the early twentieth century, and the name "Muang Tam" dates from that time. Muang Tam means "Lower City", and is in reference to the 'higher' city on Phnom Rung. Nobody seems to know what the Khmer originally called the temple.
The site is on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage site recognition A great day would be to combine it with a trio to Prasat Phanom Rung and a few other sites in the area The place is amazing and worth a trip for any traveler.

Phnom Rung Historical Park - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Khmer Temple Buriram Thailand 2024
Phanom Rung พนมรุ้ง or also known as Prasat Hin Phanom Rung ปราสาทหินพนมรุ้ง which means Phanom Rung Stone Castle. It is a Hindu Khmer Empire Temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano at 402 metres (1,319 ft) elevation.
It is located in Buriram Province in the Issan region of Thailand, and was built at a time when Khmer social-political influences were significant in Srisaket.
It was built of sandstone and laterite between the 10th and 13th centuries. It was a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolizes Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling.
The Phanom Rung sanctuary compound was constructed over several phases. These comprise two foundations of sacred brick buildings of 10th century, the minor sanctuary of 11th century, the central sanctuary built by king Suryavarman II’s relative Narentratitaya in 12th century and two Bannalais (libraries) of the 13th century. Further sacred buildings were built in the reign of King Jayavarman VII in 13th century.
Its designsted a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been restored a great deal. The complex is amazing and a great piece of human history in the region. It’s worth a special trip to the area to see this complex and visit the other sites in the area.

Muang Sema เมืองเสมา - Ancient City - Nakhon Ratchasima Thailand 2024
Muang Sema เมืองเสมา Histoeical Park
A sprawling ancient city site housing various temple ruins as well as some well preserved moats and embankments which reveals several distinct construction/occupation periods.
A moated, irregular shaped, core area on the south side of the ancient city, measuring some 600m x 1100 at its widest points, was likely to have been the earliest occupation site and today features several Dvaravati-period brick vestiges.
A presumably, subsequent expansion of the site - also still featuring a largely intact moat and embankments - extended it by over 1 km to the north.
Ceremonial sites and early period important buildings were located in the southern section with possibly the majority of the population to the north. The more rectangular central area with a moat and double embankment indicates a defensive purpose and speculatively may have been added at a later date to house the city garrison or even some kind of palace complex.
The site was clearly one of major importance over a lengthy time frame and indeed there was a branch of the famous 'Angkor Road' from Angkor Wat to Phimai (Vimayapura) leading directly to the city.
The site's importance appears to have faded in the post-13th century era with the nearby, present-day provincial capital, Nakhon Ratchasima taking over importance.
There are numerous temple ruins and vestiges scattered in and around Muang Sema and while the overall site clearly retained its importance during the period of Angkorean administration.
Two significant inscriptions were found at Muang Sema; the Bo Ika stele, (K.400), unearthed at Muang Sema Monument 7 and K.1141 whose provenance is merely listed as Muankg Sema. The latter is dated to 971 and the early years of the reign of Jayavarman V.
The site is not as impressive as the large temples that have undergone extensive restoration like Phimai and a few of the others. Most of the ruins are down to the base with little to see. It’s a nice stop for history lovers and could be incorporated into visits of the nearby ruins and temples while in the area.

Wat Trai Trueng วัดไตรตรึงษ์ - Ayutthaya Historical Park - Thailand 2024
Wat Trai Trueng วัดไตรตรึงษ์ is a small restored ruin on Ayutthaya's city island in the middle of the
Historical Park. The ruin is near Wat Phra Ram. Wat Phra Ram bus built by the second Ayutthaya king for the ashes of his father, the founder of the kingdom, King U-Thong, officially called Ramathibodhi I.
On site is a sermon hall (vihara) with a chedi on its western side. There are also a number of foundations of chedi rai (satellite chedi) remaining nit they are all in poor condition.
Its historical background and period of construction are unknown as well as who and why it was built.
The ruin of Wat Trai Trueng we see today, must have been completely reconstructed because records from the tourism development department have no records of it from earlier maps.
The temple might be named after the City of Trai Trueng. This is a settlement in the area of
Kamphaeng Phet on the Ping River that was established by a group of Thai from the area of Chieng Saen, who were expelled by the Burmese in the latter part of the twelfth century. The city became likely a vassal to Sukhothai in the middle of the thirteenth century. The city was said to have once been the home of the mother of King U-Thong. The princess was expelled from the city by her father, the King of Trai Trueng, after having married a commoner. They both left the city and
established Thep Nakhon in 1319. In 1344, their son U-Thong became king and moved
the capital to Ayudhya in 1351.
The temple ruin is small and in very poor condition. It’s only worth a short visit for anyone interested in old ruins or are passing by while visiting the larger and better preserved ruins.

Wat Kluei วัดกล้วย With Traditional Tattoo - Ayutthaya Thailand 2024
Wat Kluei วัดกล้วย
Wat Kluei which means the Banana Monastery is an active temple located off the city island in
the eastern area. The temple is located on the east bank of the Pa Sak River. North of the temple is Wat Phichai Songkhram and south lies Wat Ko Kaeo.
It is a rather small monastic complex. The ordination hall (ubosot) stands in the classic east-west alignment facing river. The ubosot is built in the Late Ayutthaya style and has two elevated porches. The structure is surrounded by an inner wall, called kamphaeng kaeo (crystal wall), separating the monastic world from the secular world.
The temple is mentioned in the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya as being the place where Luang Saraseni with his followers set up camp in December 1766.
The Phraya of Tak (later became King Takein) was promoted to Phraya Kamphaeng Phet by the Siamese King Suriyamin (Ekathat) and appointed as a brigade commander of a boat army that he had to assembled at Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon in order to confront the Burmese in the open plains southeast of Ayutthaya.
Phraya Kamphaeng Phet assigned the Phraya of Phetburi as his front guard, while Luang
Saraseni’s troops were in support. The front guard consisting of five fighting boats came in
contact with the enemy. The boats of the Phraya of Phetburi were completely encircled by
the numerous boats of the Burmese.
Phraya Kamphaeng Phet and Luang Saraseni
moored their boats, watched but did not advance to reinforce the front guard. The troops of the Phraya of Phetburi were slain and the leader, after a heroic battle, was impaled by the Burmese.
Phraya Kamphaeng Phet and Luang Saraseni fled the battlefield, did not return to the capital and set up stockades near Wat Phichai to the north Wat Kluei.
Phraya Kamphaeng Phet, seeing that Ayutthaya would been soon fall to the Burmese, decided to withdraw to the south, while Luang Saraseni fled elsewhere.
Its historical background and period of construction are unknown but the temple says it was built in 1657 under King Narai.

Kong Khong Market - Bowing Market - Ayutthaya Thailand 2024
Kong Khong Market, also known as Bowing Market or Talat Kong Khong is located about 15 minutes south of Ayutthaya.
This market has a weird name because in the past vendors would lay their merchandises on the ground or in their boats. People who wanted to buy the goods had to bow their heads down in order to take a closer look at the items for sale.
This market was opened in 2006. It is a private market with the objective to allow the locals to have some space to open their shops. The market has been successful and has grown bigger until it has becomes the most interesting market in Ayutthaya. This market is open Thursdays to Sundays. On Thursdays and Fridays, customers are the locals or people working in nearby factories. During the weekends, customers who are tourists from other places in Thailand stop here.
Even though this market is not a big one, it has its own charm. All vendors wear Thai costumes in magenta or purple like the color of the mangosteen. The highlight of this market is the food zone where you can buy food to order. You will think that the food is delicious.
At ten o’clock in the morning of each opening day, there will be the Thai drum dance performance dedicated to Pho Pu Saeng Som (the male ancestral spirit named Saeng Som). On the first Sunday of each month, there is a coin alms giving, which is an activity that all visitors can participate in.

Wat Yannasen or Wat Yan Sen วัดญาณเสน - Huge Ancient Chedi - Ayutthaya Thailand 2024
Wat Yannasen or Wat Yan Sen วัดญาณเสน
Wat Yan Sen is located on the north of the city island. It is situated east of the former Royal Palace near a few of the important sites.
Wat Yannasen is an active temple built on the boundaries of an ancient site. The modern facilities can be seen from the U-Thong Road entrance. The architectural structures from the ancient monastery are behind the modern site.
The most remarkable structure in site at this temple is its ancient chedi. It is designed in the Late Ayutthaya period architectural style. It is the same style as Chedi Sri Suriyothai.
This chedi as an entrance on the east side. The entrance is accesable by a large staircase.
There are arched porticos in each of the cardinal directions. Each portico is crowned with its own niche and chedi. The niches have all been bricked over except for an entrance on the eastern side.
The inner relic chamber is empty, but there is
a hole in the floor leading to a crypt below that is now sealed off. The spire has at least 49 rings and its harmika and finial are in good shape.
In addition, there are several small chedis on site. Two of which remain in relatively good condition (except for the multiple holes dug into them by looters). There are also traces of some of the old monastery walls.
There is not much known about Wat Yan Sen’s history. Wat Yan Sen would have been behind the city’s original walls before they were expanded.
This monastery probably had some type of connection to ancient elephant stables. Maps show that elephants and their mahouts were housed in the area between Wat Yan Sen to
Khlong Pratu Khao Pluak. Excavations revealed that a building on this site contained ropes for harnessing elephants.
Wat Yan Sen was situated along Khlong Nam Chiao, a canal that brought water from Khlong Mueang (the old Lopburi River) to Bueng Phra Ram. The water from this canal was regulated by a gate known as Pratu Tasibiay. A portion of the gate’s wall can still be seen along U-Thong Road near the front of this temple.
During the 1940s, many artifacts were discovered at this temple, including pottery and a Buddha image in the Lopburi style.
The chedi at this temple is well worth a short visit. The restored building is always locked up but it’s still nice to see the huge chedi.

Koh Kradat - Day Trip From Koh Mak To See The Deer & 1 Tree Island - Thailand 2024
Off the north east tip of Koh Mak is the small island of Koh Kradat. It is a very flat low lying island, thought to resemble a sheet of paper floating on the waves giving it the name, Koh meaning island and Kradat meaning paper.
The island itself is a working coconut plantation. There are 8 full time workers that stay on the island with others that come in during the day. There is no electricity on the island so it gets very hot for the workers with no a/c.
There is a thriving herd of deer, which is the main attraction on the island. In addition to the deer the island has some nice beaches that will be completely deserted. On the very north part of the island are 3 smaller islands that are accessible by walking down stone paths to each one. The smallest island is 1 tree island that has a single tree. This is a popular place for Thais to come to take pictures of this island.
The entrance fee is 150 Baht which is payable as part of the boat fee, itself normally around 400 Baht per person roundtrip.
To get to the island just show up at Laem Son Beach, in the very north east of the island and the operators of the only restaurant there will arrange the boat.
Once on the island, there is a motorcycle with side car that will take you to see both the deer and the general topography of the island. When the tide is low you can also walk across to the two tiny islands at its northern tip – Koh Nok Nok and Koh Nok Nai.
This day trip was a bit expensive but it was a really enjoyable time. The deer were docile and didn’t hassle you for free food. The interior of the island was not scenic but the beaches were very good. The short hike to the small islands was also very nice. It’s a good half day trip off Koh Mak to see something different.

Abandoned Ananya Hideaway Resort - Koh Kham Thailand 2024
Koh Kham is a small island that is open to visitors from nearby Koh Mak. It has an amazing white sand beach dotted with black volcanic rocks that form some interesting patterns at the waters edge. The beach is one of the best you will find anywhere and inspired the development of a 6 star luxury resort, Ananya Hideaway.
In 2014 the resort was raided by government officials causing construction to stop. It was deemed to be an illegal construction and this super exclusive resort now sits at about 80% completed.
If you come to the island you can walk through the rooms and see the state that it’s been in since 2014. The rooms have the glass doors, electrical wiring and the infinity pools installed. The jungle has started to reclaim this property but there is a small staff that still tends to the beach and cuts back the hedges.
The island is currently for sale for 1.5 billion Thai Baht. Here is the news article describing the raid by the government. It’s in Thai but can be translated if you’re interested in reading about it.
https://mgronline.com/local/detail/9570000097558
The island is a short boat ride from Koh Mak. It’s a great day trip from the island to see the beach and this abandoned resort.

Laem Son Beach - Beautiful Remote Beach - Koh Mak Thailand 2024
Laem Son Beach is one of the more remote beaches on Koh Mak. It is located on the far northeast end of the island.
At Laem Son Beach you will find a wide stretch of empty sand, crystal clear water, and a nice sea pines on the back of the beach giving some much needed shade.
The beach runs all the way around “Laem Son Cape” with views both north and east. The only facilities on the beach is a long shack with a local Thai food restaurant. They offer an assortment of of the normal Thai dishes, cold drinks, and fresh seafood. There is also a bathroom you can use for 10 Baht and beach chairs you can rent for the day.
The tiny island of Koh Kradat is located about 1 kilometer across the water from Laem Son Beach. The operators of the restaurant on the beach can arrange a trip to it for 400 Baht a person round trip.
To get to Laem Son Beach you will need to follow a dirt road through the rubber trees. It is a bit of a challenge for those inexperienced on a motorcycle.
The beach is a great destination for anyone wanting to enjoy the peace and tranquility of an isolated Thai beach. The crowds on Koh Mak are nonexistent and even more so on this remote beach.

Koh Rang Snorkeling Tour From Koh Mak - Thailand 2024
Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities for visitors to Koh Mak, Koh Kut and Koh Chang. The best snorkelling sites rival those you’ll find in the south of Thailand. The visibility might not always be as good but you are guaranteed to see large schools of fish. This is an activity that definitely should be on your itinerary.
One of the best spots in the area is Koh Rang. It’s a small uninhabited island that is part of the national park. There are several other islands in the area that are dive and snorkel spots.
Starting at the pier in Koh Mak at 9 am it’s an all day trip with a lunch break around noon. Equipment and guides are provided as well as pickup from your hotel. Cost for the tour was 990 Baht that included a 150 Baht entrance fee for the national park. Thai nationals only pay 30 Baht for the national park fee.
The day we went the water was very rough and not as clear due to the rain. Even with that it was still enjoyable with being able to see the marine life.

Ao Soun Yai Beach - Koh Mak Thailand 2024
This beach is also very beautiful and well known for perfect sunsets and a great view of the nearby island of Koh Kham.
Along this beach are only 3 resorts and they share 3 km of this sandy beach.
It is hard to say if this beach or Ao Kao is more beautiful. This beach has a lot less development than Ao Kao so it is much more secluded but still has all of the amenities visitors look for.
The beauty of the beach varies a lot from the season of the year and the weather. The tide and wind can affect how you see the beach. At low tide you will find a lot more of the seaweed on sections of the beach. You may also have higher winds that make it less enjoyable. On of the best things about this island is that it’s small enough that if it’s windy here just cross to the far side of the island and find the right place to relax.
At this beach you find in front of the Koh Mak Resort the pier where the Panan Speedboat departs and arrives. You can travel to Koh Kham also from here for 350 Baht a person and see the amazing white sand beach on that small island.

How to get from Bangkok to Koh Mak, Koh Kut (Koh Kood) & Koh Chang - Thailand 2024
Getting to the wonderful island of Koh Mak, Koh Chang or Koh Kut isn’t as difficult as it might seem when planning a trip. The first part is you’ll have to figure out how to get from Bangkok to Trat. The last part of the journey will be by passenger boat as there aren’t any vehicle ferres to the island. So traveling door to door in the same vehicle isn’t possible.
Many take the bus to Trat and then spend a night in the town before traveling to the islands the next morning. It’s also possible to fly and do the ferry trip to the island that day or the next morning. Either way that is the most difficult part. Once you are in Trat the next step is to get to the ferry pier.
Another option is to arrange a bus with a ferry transfer from Bangkok and one of the piers in Trat. One company that provides service from Khao San Road in Bangkok to the islands is Boonsiri. For 1,100 Baht, one way, it’s a simple and easy way to get to the islands. They provide service to Koh Kut, Koh Mak and Koh Chang on the same bus/ ferry. 1,100 Baht with lunch is the cost to the second stop of Koh Mak on this route.
Here is what to expect on the trip.

Ao Kao Beach (White Sand Beach) - Koh Mak Thailand 2024 - Most Popular Beach on the Island
This is the most popular beach with 12 little resorts along this beach. Ao Kao Beach is about 5 km long, so you will find a lot of quiet spots here to enjoy this beautiful beach.
This beach is considered one of the most romantic areas on the island. The beauty of this beach is –like everywhere in the world- changes from high and low-tide.
Some people prefer the high-tide, so you just walk a few steps until the water is deep enough to swim. Some prefer the low-tide, so you have more of the sandy beach.
From here, you can enjoy nice sunsets and a view of Koh Rayang Nok and Koh Rayang Nai. Coconut trees and sea pines line the back of the beach making for some very scenic pictures.
Ao Kao Beach has the small pier for the Leelawadee Speedboat. It’s right in front of the Makathanee Resort giving easy access for visitors and day trips to other islands and snorkeling.
The beach has very nice sand. The water is perfect and a great place to stay on the island for beach lovers. The island is always very quiet so you will never have crowds on this long stretch of beautiful white sand.

I jump on the motorcycle and ride the 500 km to the stadium to watch the game.

Wat Samakeetham - Koh Mak’s Only Temple - Thailand 2024
Wat Koh Mak also known as Wat Samakeetham is the only temple on the island of Koh Mak.
Koh Mak is a small island located in the east of Thailand between Koh Chang and Koh Kut. It’s known as the green island and is popular for beach going tourists.
Located near Ao Nid Pier this small temple is perched on a hill giving visitors amazing ocean views.
The temple was originally established as a place to practice meditation. The locals have invested into it in order for it to be a proper temple to service the community. With the expansion they have built a small ordination hall that will be opened soon.
It’s a nice break from the beaches and the monks are very nice. They will be happy to tell you the history of the area as well as the temple.

Ton Tann Night Market - Largest in Khon Kaen - Thailand 2024
Khon Kaen is a city located in Northeastern Thailand. This town is not as well-known for its nightlife as some of the bigger cities like Bangkok, Phuket or Pattaya. But there are still plenty of options for those looking for some evening entertainment in Khon Kaen.
Of the seven night markets in Khon Kaen, Thailand Ton Tann Market is the largest and busiest. This market is more of an attraction than a conventional night market. Rather than a street where vendors set up their carts or vinyl tents, Ton Tann has boutique shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. Scattered throughout the shops are the traditional carts and tents, which add to making this the largest night market. Because of its size and location on Mittraphap highway, Ton Tann can handle the largest volume of people and has dedicated parking to handle the crowds.
The market is very large with plenty of food and shopping. There is something for everyone here. The market is open every evening from 4:00 until 11:00 pm. It’s a great activity to do in Khon Kaen in the evening, out of the heat of the day.

Wat Thung Setthi วัดทุ่งเศรษฐี - Beautiful Modern Temple - Khon Kaen Thailand 2024
Wat Thung Setthi วัดทุ่งเศรษฐี Khon Kaen province, is a relatively new Thai Buddhist temple. Wat Thung Setthi means Temple of the Millionaire's Field, meaning that people who make merit here are, or will become, millionaires.
There is a temple of the same name in Bangkok and a ruined temple of that name in near the Ramnarong Gate outside the Si Satchanalai Historical Park.
Wat Thung Setthi is somewhat different from the typical Thai temple because of its white exterior with gold and blue accents, rather than the traditional gold and red temples seen throughout the country.
Its location is surrounded by rice fields as it sits in a still rural open atmosphere, about a 15 minute drive from town. The wat grounds cover approximately 29 acres. Its planning and construction began in 1999 by Luangta Oy. The developer was a strong supporter of the Dheravata Doctrine of Luangpu-Mon Puritatto to proclaim Buddhism to laymen in northeast Thailand. According to Luangta Oy, the temple was not only built for worshippers to make merit but as a tribute to pay homage to the then living King Rama IX and the rulling dynasty. Major construction was completed in 2012.
The site location was believed to be holy land where the three worlds of heaven, earth and the underworld intersect.
The major structure on the grounds is the Maha Rattana Chedi Sri Trai Loka Dhatu which contains a relic of the Buddha, a crystal sacred lower right tooth and was the final major building dedicated in 2012. Since the chedi is located at the intersection of the three worlds, those who come to worship will pay respect to the three chedis of the three worlds simultaneously.
What makes the temple unique are the contemporary touches such as the etchings in the glass windows, which are usually shown as engraving or carving on wood at other Buddhist temples. The themes depicted are all labelled in English as well as Thai and are between ancient Buddhist moralistic tales mingled with very modern interpretations of those same moral values.
The styling of the temple is very unique and was nicely done. It’s a short drive outside of Khon Kaen and was a nice place to visit.

Prasat Pueai Noi ปราลาทเชื่อยน้อย - 11th Century Khmer Temple - Khon Kaen Thailand 2024
Prasat Pueai Noi is a Khmer sanctuary located in Pueai Noi, Khon Kaen, Thailand. It is believed to have been built in the 16th-17th century, of the Buddhist calendar, as a place to perform Hindu religious rituals.
The sanctuary consists of three main buildings and a library surrounded by a moat representing Mount Meru.
Each pagoda has a sandstone lintel with designs and a smaller chapel and a lintel with clear, lovely designs.
A laterite wall surrounds the compound, and there is a pool just beyond it. The place is still well-preserved, and the lintel depicting reclining Vishnu is still rich in detail. It is noticeable that it has been renovated but that doesn’t take away from the styling at this temple.
The ruins are about an hour to an hour and a half south of Khon Kaen. It’s not large but it is very secluded. You can explore without the large crowds and is worth special trip for anyone that enjoys this part of the regions history.

Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market - Bangkok Thailand 2024
Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market ตลาดน้ำบางน้ำผึ้ง is in Bang Nam Phueng Subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province adjacent to Wat Bang Nam Phueng Nai temple and considered as a part of Bang Kachao, a nice area on a bend of the Chao Phraya River.
The market was inaugurated in 2004 by the local subdistrict authority to help locals move an oversupply of agricultural products. Its vendors limited to people from the community. The market is on a canal surrounded by a residential neighborhood. Products include commercial crops such as fruits and sweets, noodles, processed food, sea shells, dried shrimp, pickled shrimp, desserts, grain cakes, and fruit.
With a seemingly endless variety of snacks and Thai food as well as souvenirs it’s a great place for anyone to visit. Open on the weekends and being very near the center of Bangkok it’s easy to get to and you can make it part of a day trip by visiting other sites like the park in Bang Kachao. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wat Prot Ket Chettharam Samut Prakan - 200 Year Old Temple - Thailand 2024
Wat Prot Ket Chettharam Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan is an important temple established in Rama III's reign. Its architecture received Chinese influence with an exceptional gable decorated with delicate ceramics. It is the only Thai Buddhist temple in Phra Pradaeng, as other temples within the area are Mon style Buddhist temples.
Wat Prot Ket was built by Phraya Phetphichai ( Ket ) during the reign of King Rama II in Chinese architecture style, without the traditional Thai style roof decorations.
Phra Pradaeng was the original center of the area south of Bangkok near the mouth of the Chao Phraya river. Originally named Nakhon Khuan Khan it was settled by Mon people.
In 1815, King Rama II built the Pom Phlaeng Faifa fort at the river bend. The fort is now located in a small park and accessible for visitors.
The temple has several interesting things to see. It’s said to contain the largest reclining Buddha in Samar Prakan as well as a sala that was used by King Eama VIII and Rama IX (when he was the prince before becoming king himself) in 1946.
