Chandragiri Hills Cable Car

The Chandragiri Hills Cable Car is an operational recreational public transport system located in Chandragiri, Kathmandu, Nepal.

It opened on December 15, 2016, and runs from Thankot to the top of Chandragiri Hills, spanning a distance of 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) and taking approximately 9-12 minutes to complete the journey. The cable car system consists of 38 gondolas, each capable of carrying 8 passengers, and can transport up to 1,000 people per hour.

The cable car offers stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan mountain ranges, including Annapurna, Manaslu, and Everest, on clear days.

The cable car operates daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays and from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekends. The ticket prices vary based on nationality and whether a one-way or return ticket is purchased. For Nepalese citizens, the one-way ticket costs NPR 495, while SAARC country nationals pay NPR 790. Chinese visitors pay US$9, and foreigners pay US $13 for a one-way ticket.

At the top of the hill is the resort and a popular temple for the local Hindu’s to visit.

Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple is a Hindu temple located on Chandragiri Hill in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have been built at the site where Sati Devi's forehead, or "Bhala," fell after she sacrificed herself.

The temple is situated at an elevation of 2,551 meters (8,369 feet) and is connected to the Kathmandu Valley by a cable car.

The temple complex includes idols of various Hindu gods and goddesses, a view tower, restaurants, food stalls, gift stores, a banquet hall, a 3D hall, and an amusement park for children.

The temple is considered a significant pilgrimage site, especially during the Shivaratri festival and on Mondays during the month of Shrawan.

According to historical accounts, before the unification of Nepal, King Prithvi Narayan Shah had planned to make the Kathmandu Valley the capital of a unified Nepal from this hill and had worshipped at the temple.

The temple is also known for its historical inscriptions in the Pashupati script, which provide insights into the cultural and historical context of the Kathmandu Valley.

This was one of the highlights of the trip to Nepal. It’s about an hour outside of Kathmandu but well worth the effort to get to.
