Built during the late Ayutthaya period, Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan at first went by the name of Wat Hong.
The temple is open from 7.00 am-4.15 pm on weekdays and 7.00 am-5.00 on weekends. It is located in the municipal area of Chachoengsao.
The temple houses an important Buddha image, depicted in the attitude of meditation, called Phra Phutthasothon or Luang Pho Sothon, 1.65 meters wide and 1.48 meters high. The image is believed to bring wellness and health to devotees.
It is said the Buddha image was found in the nearby Bang Pakong River, and when it was later enshrined at the temple, plaster was layered upon it to discourage thieves. Now, worshippers daub gold leaf upon the cement covered statue.
Worshippers from all walks of life come to pay respect to this most sacred image in Chachoengsao.
Nearby stalls offer food and local souvenirs, and long tail boats provide service to and from the city market. It’s also an easy trip to here from the train station located just a few kilometers away.

Wat Saman Rattanaram & Floating Market - Largest Reclining Ganesh in Thailand
Wat Saman Rattanaram is located on the Bang Pakong River in Chachoengsao Province.
There is a story that has been passed down from generation to generation regarding the history of the temple. There was a wealthy and respected family that lived in the area. The head of the family was a man known as Khun Saman Chinpracha (formerly Jai). He had 2 wives at the time of his death.
When Khun Saman Chinpracha passed away, the two wives of Khun Saman Chinpracha along with Mrs. Yishun Wiriyapanich built the temple in order to dedicate the merit to the deceased husband.
The temple was named "Wat Mai Khun Saman Perm Nakhon", bringing the name of Khun Saman Chinpracha. and a wife's maiden name. The temple was also known as Wat Rat.
The villagers usually call this temple "Wat Mai Khun Saman" now.
Wat Saman is located near the Bang Pakong Dam. Inside is the enshrined of the largest reclining Ganesha Buddha image in Thailand that most people come to worship. There is also a museum inside the temple in addition to the huge images located around the complex.
The giant Reclining Ganesha is said to be the biggest in Thailand if not the world. It is 16 meters high and 22 meters long.
Ganesha is a Hindu deity and has an elephant head and four arms. Images of Ganesha are widely seen across India and Nepal. There are thirty two popular iconographic forms of Ganesha and all of them can be seen around the base of this Reclining Ganesha.
There is also a floating market which has plenty of stalls selling a variety of food. You can also join boat tours on the Bang Patong River.
There is enough to do at this temple to spend half a day seeing everything available as well as trying out some of the local food at the sprawling market.

Ayutthaya Historical Park - Drone & Walking Tour - Thailand 2024
Ayutthaya Historical Park อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พระนครศรีอยุธยา covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya Thailand.
The city of Ayutthaya was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1351, though it is likely to be significantly older, based on evidence showing that the area was already populated during the Mon Dvaravati period. Around 850 AD, the Khmers occupied the area and established a stronghold, naming it Ayodhya, after one of the holiest Hindu cities in India of the same name.
The city was captured by the Burmese in 1569 during what is known as the “White Elephant War”. Ayutthaya was not looted but became a vassel state until it regained independance a some years later. It remained the capital of the country until its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767. The capital was moved to Tonburi and later to its current location in Bangkok
The city was completely destroyed by fire and looting. The populstion was either killed, fled or was enslaved by the Burmese. This once grest city was in ruins.
In 1969, the Fine Arts Department of Thailand began renovations of the ruins, scaling up the project after the site was declared a historical park in 1976. Part of the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
There are hundreds of ruins on and off the city. Most people only see the major ruins and miss out on some of the hidden gems that the park has to offer. We take a tour of the smaller, lessor know temples inside the historical park.

100 Year Baan Mai Market - Chachoengsao Thailand 2024
100 Year Baan Mai Market (using the name of Ban Mai Subdistrict) is the market located along the Bang Pakong River. It is a famous antique market in Chachoengsao province that shouldn't be missed when visiting the province. 100 Year Baan Mai Market is the place where you will see the old houses and waterfront community as well as will enjoy shopping for local products and eating lots of delicious food.
100 Year Baan Mai Market is located along the Bang Pakong River. As 100 Year Baan Mai Market is a waterfront market, people can reach the market both by land and water. Even if you have no private car, reaching 100 Year Baan Mai Market is convenient as you can take songtaew from the bus station or train station to the market.
100 Year Baan Mai Market has a genuine atmosphere because it is set up in an ancient Thai-Chinese community that has been in existence for more than 100 years. The market is not like the floating markets in the central region where vendors are selling stuff from the boats. The stalls here are set up on land alongside the path running between rows of wooden houses adjacent to each other in a small community. 100 Year Baan Mai Market is mostly visited by locals and not many tourists can be spotted here, that gives the market more of an authentic feel.
It is a small market as the length of it is just 200 - 300 meters. The charm here is a truly ancient market and the traditional waterfront community. This area overall is still being well preserved. It is believed that the Ban Mai market community has existed since the reign of King Rama III and has been the main commercial center along the waterway routes.
100 Year Baan Mai Market in Chachoengsao is open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 08:30 to 17:00.
The market is a lot of fun. It’s a bit outside of Bangkok but if you are nearby stop and check it out.

Top 4 Beaches of Khao Lak With Drone Footage - Thailand 2024
The amazing beaches in Khao Lak are definitely one of the highlights in Thailand. Located on the Andaman Sea these sandy beaches are what you think of when you picture a beach vacation. The beautiful natural scenery with palms and tall sea pines are what make this place special with an isolated feeling while you walk the long stretches of beaches.
On a coastline of about 30 kilometers, you can discover lonely and quiet beaches as well as dreamlike bays. Typical for this region are also the spectacularly beautiful resorts. They are usually located directly on the sea and make for an unforgettable vacation in Thailand.
There are many beaches to choose from and finding a top anything here is an almost impossible task. These are the 4 that most people agree upon but there are many others that could be put into this list and it would be tough to argue with it.
Khuk Khak Beach
This is a 3 km stretch of beach that is probably the most quite beach in the area. If you are looking for a peaceful beach destination in Thailand, you might want to consider Khuk Khak Beach. The beach is separated from Bang Niang Beach by a small creek that can be crossed during low tide if you want to explore that beach as well. This beach is also surrounded by a few 5 star and high end resorts making it very quiet and less crowded.
Nang Thong Beach
Nang Thong Beach is a popular spot among tourists and locals in Khao Lak. It is a long stretch of beach north of Sunset Beach featuring a lighthouse and black sand. It is a great spot to capture the sunsets or exercising on the beach. Nang Thong could be considered the center of the Khao Lak Area, where you can find local restaurants, bars, banks and other amenities along the road.
Bang Niang Beach
Bang Niang Beach is surrounded by local hotels and a local night market. This beach has a golden sandy beach area that is perfect for enjoying a day under the sun or taking a walk to enjoy the scenic view. A must visit destination for beach lovers if you visit here.
Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is one of the best beaches for captivating coastal views and stunning sunsets. The beach is located right next to Khaolak mountain, offering visitors an enchanting experience with its breathtaking natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. There are also many hotels and restaurants in this area with a small national park on Khaolak mountain that leads down to a small sandy beach.
Khao Lak has many other things to do and see other than the beaches. It is one of the real gems in Thailand.

Phra Borommathat Sawi (Sawi Pagoda) - Beautiful 30m tall Pagoda - Chumphon Thailand 2024
The temple is located on the bank of the Sawi River and is known for its 30m high bell-shaped chedi, which is believed to contain relics of the Buddha. The chedi is decorated with lotus shaped stucco, 7 tiered circular disks, and a dew shaped peak.
Legend has it that when King Sri Thammasokarat (King of Nakhon Si Thammarat) passed Sawi with his army in 1260, he saw a flock of crows on a brick mound. One of the crows was white. The King saw this as a lucky omen and immediately ordered the mound's excavation. Workers found an urn containing relics of the Buddha beneath the mound. Overwhelmed with faith, the King ordered the construction of a pagoda to enshrine the relics.
The Pagoda was reconstructed in 1916 due to it becoming dilapidated. In 2016 the whole area was restored with new buildings being added.
Phra Borommathat Sawi (Sawi Grand Pagoda) is found within Wat Phra That Sawi which is 37km south of Chumphon.
The grounds are very well maintained and the chedi is interesting to see with a great story behind it. It’s worth a short visit if you are close by.

Wat Chedi Ai Khai (Wat JD) - The Chicken Temple - Nakhon Si Thammarat Thailand 2024
Wat Chedi Ai Khai, which it’s also known as Ta Khai Wat Chedi, or, according to the many signs directing you to the place, just Wat Chedi or Wat JD (JD sounds like Chedi) or even Wat Chedi Ikai (because Ikai sounds like Ai Khai.) Most people though, know it as The Chicken Wat.
It allegedly dates back more than a thousand years. A famous monk named Luang Phu Thuad was travelling south from Ayutthaya. That’s more than 1.000 KM away. He had with him a young disciple, nine or ten years old, named Ai Khai. When they arrived at the area of the present wat, they found “many treasures.” The young boy was instructed to stay there to look after the treasures.
There’s no mention of what happened to the place, the boy or the treasures, until the building, by now derelict, was rediscovered in 1957. After that, anyone who tried to sleep inside the ubosot, the main prayer hall was unable to unless they had asked for permission from the ghost of Ai Khai. Supposedly anyone trying to sleep would see an image of the boy bashing their heads and pulling their legs.
In 1983 Pho Than Thoem, who was the abbot of Wat Chedi at the time, decided that people should give money to Ai Khai, to help redevelop the wat. People come in the thousands every day, from all over Thailand and Malaysia. They pray to a “thousand year old” small statue of Ai Khai, who is dressed in modern clothes and dark glasses and they donate money.
Why would they do that? Because they believe the young boy, or his ghost, will solve their financial problems. Starting a new business? Pray to Ai Khai. It’s an interesting story and temple and worth a visit. I enjoyed my time here.

700 Year Old Temple Wat Tha Chai Siri - Phetchaburi Thailand
Phetchaburi is a province that is famous for its natural charm of Beaches and mountains. The province is located not too far from Bangkok, so it is a popular tourist destination of Thais and foreign travellers.
Phetchaburi is situated on the northwestern shores of the Gulf of Thailand and borders Myanmar (Burma) to the west, where the dense jungle peaks of the Tanaosri Range serve as a natural division between Thailand and Myanmar. Petchaburi has many historic temples from the Khmer era and the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Wat Tha Chai Siri is one of these surviving temples from at least 700 years ago.
The origin of the name Tha Chai Siri Temple goes back to the fighting between Ayutthaya and Burma. Thai soldiers clashed with the Burmese near the temple at the Singkhon Checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The Burmese split the Thai defenders in the battle and forced them to retreat. The Thai army retreated with the Burmese in close pursuit.
The army from Ayutthaya stopped briefly at this temple to rest and drink water when the Burmese army caught up and a close quarter battle ensued. The Burmese troops lost the initiative and fled into the temple building and were eventually defeated by the Thai soldiers.
After the battle there were blood stains on the interior walls of the ordination hall that remained there until its restoration years later.
From this event the name of the temple was changed to "Wat Tha Chai" and later "Siri" was
added, making it "Wat Tha Chai Siri" which it is still called to this day.
Northwest of Wat Tha Chai Siri, there is a village called Singkhon Village. It is assumed that this village was built by Thai people and Thai soldiers who fled the Burmese army from the Singkhon checkpoint, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, when they fought with the Burmese soldiers and were victorious. After the battle some of them settled down in what is called Baan Singkhon today.
The main Buddha, image in the ordination hall is named "Phra Phuhasirirojanachai Mongkol" or "Phra Ruang Wat Tha Chai". It is in the posture of prohibiting parasites (preventing disease) or in the posture of granting blessings. This is very different than most temples because of this posture. Generally the main Buddha image in the chapels are in the seated position. The most popular posture is the Maravijaya posture. As for Wat Tha Chai Siri "It is a standing Buddha statue. Cast in bronze in the posture of prohibiting parasites (preventing disease) it is a late Lopburi period art, more than 700 years old. There is a Ruean Kaew arch in the background, behind the Buddha image. The principal Buddha image is very old and sacred and is revered and worshipped by the people of Phetchaburi and Buddhists from the past until the present day.
This temple also is famous for supplying water for the coronation ceremony for Thai King Rama V. There are many pictures of other displays inside the buildings dedicated to the former king. The temple is small but has an interesting history and is unknown to tourists. It was a chance discovery that I found it and I really enjoyed the temple.
If you happen to be in the area it’s worth a short visit.

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร 1,000 Year Old Temple - Nakhon Si Thammarat
Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร is the main Buddhist temple (wat) of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in southern Thailand. The main stupa of the temple, Phra Borommathat Chedi ('great noble relics stupa'), was built by King Sri Dhammasokaraja in the early 13th century to establish a symbol for the Theravada Buddhism sect in the province. The temple is believed to house a tooth of Gautama Buddha.
According to legend, Prince Thanakuman and Queen Hem Chala brought the relic of Buddha to Hat Sai Kaew and built a small pagoda in 291 . When King Si-Thamma Sokarat established the city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, he built a new temple called Wat Phra Borom That on the same site in the Mahayana-style of the ruling Srivijaya Kingdom. The city of Nakhon Si Thammarat was a prominent city in the ancient kingdom of Tambralinga. The city was a part of the Srivijaya empire till the early 13th century.
Historians believe that the city was almost emptied by epidemics and war, prompting the king to build a larger stupa in the Sri Lankan style with public participation and thereby re-develop the town community.
The other religious buildings were constructed between the 13th and 18th centuries including the Wihan-Bodhi Lanka, a roofed cloister around the bodhi tree which is believed to be a sprout of the Mahabodhi tree in the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India.
The creation of the stupa led to Nakhon Si Thammarat becoming the center of Theravada Buddhism. Inscriptions from the Sukhothai Kingdom, speak of the influence the city and the stupa had in spreading and strengthening Theravada Buddhism in the kingdom. The temple also received patronage from the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which ruled over entire present day Thailand between the 14th and 17th centuries.
The stupa and other religious edifices were built over 100 years after construction of the original stupa began. It underwent massive restoration 10 times between 1612 and 2009. The temple was nominated to a tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2012.
It’s the most Important religious site in southern Thailand and well worth a visit.

Wat Phra Thong Temple Phuket - Unique Half Buried Buddha Image - Thailand 2024
Wat Phra Thong (or Wat Prathong), meaning ‘Golden Buddha Image Temple is a very old temple with an incredible legend behind it, the kind of story that irresistibly attracts people. It’s not very big or impressive, but everyone first wants to see the famous half-buried golden Buddha.
A long time ago in Thalang, a boy tied the rope of his buffalo to a piece of wood sticking out of the pasture ground. This was a ‘finial’, the conical shape at the top of a very large Buddha image almost entirely buried. The boy became ill and soon died, as well as his buffalo. Following a dream he had, the boy’s father went to have a look at this stick to find out what it was. Villagers tried to free the statue, but the diggers were attacked by swarms of hornets coming out from the dug-up earth, while the spectators were left unharmed.
Later, during the invasion of Thalang town by the Burmese Army, Burmese soldiers tried to excavate the statue to take it back to Burma. But this time, they were attacked and bitten by swarms of tiny ants from the dug earth. Hundred of Burmese soldiers fell ill and died. The remaining soldiers set the ants on fire but could not dig deeper than the statue’s neck when the ruler of Nakhon Si Thammarat eventually liberated the city.
Finally, in 1750, a monk from Sukhothai convinced the villagers that building the temple around the Buddha image was better. The original Buddha head was covered with a new image for religious performances, which explains the perfect condition of the current half statue.
Today the ground of Wat Phra Thong consists of several temples and even a museum displaying items from the tin mining era, mostly given by locals. Wat Phra Thong is open daily from 8 am to 5.30 pm.
The temple is small but very unique. The Buddha and story is interesting and worth a short stop to explore.

Walking Street Night Market - Koh Lanta Thailand 2024
Koh Lanta is an island located south of Krabi. It has some of the best beaches in Thailand, mangrove forests, a historic old town and many other things to see and do while on the island. The atmosphere is much more laid back and the locals have avoided mass tourism in order to try to maintain the charm of the island.
After a day on the beaches or exploring the interior of the island or taking a boat trip a stop at the walking street night market is a great way to finish the day.
The market has many local as well as western style foods to meet anyone’s preference. The cool of the evening makes it even more enjoyable after a hot day in the sun. In addition to food the majority of the market has shopping for souvenirs and clothes.
The market is open from October to March nightly. It opens around 5pm until 10pm. It’s at the northern part of the island and easy to get to by motorcycle or taxi from any of the resorts.

Nai Thon Beach Phuket Thailand - Quite Piece of Paradise - With Drone Footage
Nai Thon Beach (Naithon Beach) is the southernmost beach belonging to the Sirinat National Park. It is a quiet beach that is less than one kilometer in length. Nai Thon offers visitors a relaxing and pleasant stay for people who want to escape the busy and chaotic parts of Phuket.
The beach at Nai Thon isn’t very long but it’s quite wide. At the back of the beach a nice row of mature sea pine trees provide some excellent shade from the tropical sun.
Nai Thon Beach is a beach for those who seek peace and tranquility, there is always a place to sunbath on this amazing beach. Nai Thon beach is a really relaxed beach to hang out on when visiting Phuket.
Nai Thon’s seabed slopes gently, making this beach ideal for families with small children. When the sea is calm the rocks on either side of the bay are good for snorkelling. In the middle of the bay, there are no rocks, which makes it good for swimming. In addition to swimming it’s a great place to rent a kayak and explore the coastline to see a few of the hidden beaches farther south.
Parallel to the beach the main road runs through the area. Along the road you will find shops, restaurants, a few bars and accommodations. On the beach side of the road, there are regular market stalls preparing typical street food and souvenirs for sale.
This beach has a great mix of accommodations, restaurants and solitude on the beach. The sand and sea are amazing here as well making it a great place to spend a few hours to a few days.

Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol (Wat Bang Thong) - Krabi Thailand - 95 Meter Tall Pagoda
Wat Bang Thong (Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol)
วัดมหาธาตุวชิรมงคล (วัดบางโทง)
This temple was known by the villagers as Wat Bang Tong (Wat Rong Tong) after the name of the small town in which it is located, but it was later renamed Wat Maha That Wachiramongkol.
It is around an hours drive from Ao Nang Beach and Krabi. The highlight of the temple is its large golden chedi, the Phra Mahathat Chedi. It is inspired by the Maha Chedi Phutthakhaya in India. This is the location that Buddha attained Enlightenment.
On the temple grounds there are 2 large statues. When you enter the temple the first thing you see is a large standing Buddha to your right. The second statue to the right of the temple is the revered monk Luang Phu Thuat.
Wat Bang Thong is a very beautiful temple in Krabi and well worth the hour drive from the city or Ao Nang beach to see it.
The temple originally dates back to around 1940. The temple was in such a neglected condition that it was completely demolished with new buildings being constructed in 1997. The Ubosot is the only building that wasn’t completely leveled but was instead restored to its current condition.
In 2002 the Phra Mahathat Chedi was constructed for the 50th birthday of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn (now Thai King Rama X). The Chedi is designed with the Maha Chedi Phutthakhaya in India in mind. The amazing golden Chedi stands at 95 meters and is the tallest pagoda in southern Thailand.
In 2006 King Rama X gave the temple the new name of Mahathat Vachiiramongkhon. The main Buddha statue was named Phra Buddha Thaksin Chai Mongkhon.
The temple is a bit out of the way but tours are offered for people to travel here for it. There is so much to do in Krabi already but if you have time it is well worth a visit.

Kamala Beach Phuket Thailand - 3 km of Paradise - With Drone Footage
Kamala Beach or just Kamala กมลา refers to the beach and town on the west coast of Phuket Thailand. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Phuket.
It is situated north of Patong, about 8 km, and at a distance of about 45 minutes from Phuket Airport via car. It has a long sandy curvy stretch of beach that is about 3 km long.
Kamala Beach is very nice with a tranquil atmosphere on the west coast of Phuket, popular with families and travellers who prefer a quiet holiday. The beach is immense and features many excellent Thai and international restaurants right on the beach.
The beach itself is the main reason travellers preferred Kamala. The beach is long and wide with soft sand with casuarinas and coconut trees probiding shade at the back of the beach. The sea is very shallow and clear during the high season.
This is yet another great beach on Phuket and well worth a visit if you are looking for a nice way to spend a day.

Old Town Walking Street - Koh Lanta Thailand - Great Place to Spend an Evening
Koh Lanta Old Town
Koh Lanta Old Town, located on Koh Lanta’s East coast, was once the island’s main port for trade. Now Lanta Old Town is a charming place to visit which looks and feels like it’s stood still in time.
Lanta Old Town was originally a sea gypsy settlement. Over the decades it transformed into a village influenced by trade. Now you can enjoy many shops, restaurants and homes built on stilts above the sea. This is great when the tide is in and also overlooks other islands and the mainland allowing amazing views.
The Old Town has a distinct Chinese influence and a very slow, laid back feel. Walking around looking at the lanterns gives you a sense of days gone by. While still a fishing village for the locals, much of Old Town’s trade now comes through tourism with gift shops selling local goods.
Lanta Old Town also has a museum which traces back the life and times of Koh Lanta. The museum is free to enter and is ran by the locals as a way to showcase the 3 distinct communities that have formed the basis of the modern culture in the area.
Koh Lanta old town is a nice place to visit and a welcome break from the sun and sea. On Sunday evenings they have a night market. The shops are also open everyday for souvenirs as well as seaside dinning.

The temple is small but interesting to see. The highlight is the large chedi behind the main hall. It’s not always open but worth a look around if you are in the area. It’s near other sites in the old part of the city and can be accessed after a short walk.

Phuket Old Town - Sunday Walking Street Market (Lard Yai) - Food, Shopping & More
Sunday Walking Street Market (Lard Yai) in Old Phuket Town
At the end of 2013, the Phuket old town community launched the Sunday Walking Street market along Thalang Road. Sunday was a quiet day in the old town part of Phuket. Many businesses closed on Sundays and there wasn’t much going on except tourists walking around taking pictures. The initiative was launched to bring in more economic opportunities for the locals and it has been a huge success. The added revenue has enabled the old town to undergo a renaissance with a lot of work going into preserving the old buildings. They have buried the over head wires, museums have opened and many small restaurants and cafes as well.
The market starts late afternoon around 4pm and continues until about 10pm every Sunday. There are countless vendors selling food, clothing, souvenirs as well as numerous street performers showing off their talents. It’s a great place to see and a nice break from the beaches. A good time to visit is around 6pm so you can see the sun setting over the buildings and the lights turning one the many colored buildings. It does get crowded around 7pm and onwards but it still is worth visiting.

Nai Yang Beach - Phuket Thailand - Hidden Gem of the Island
Nai Yang Beach is one of those out of the way and off the beaten tracks hidden gems. It is little known from first timer visitors to Phuket but very popular with returning travellers. Beautiful, shaded, and full of tiny fun bars and restaurants, Nai Yang remains peaceful like most of the northern beaches of Phuket because they are not along the main roads.
With a vast beach, a shallow sea, and many trees to provide shade, this place has not been overly developed and has kept a bit of the old Phuket atmosphere.
The beach itself is large and sandy with a few beach chairs. The water is very shallow, and because of this, the water might not always be as blue as on other beaches lower on the west coast. The sea gets more beautiful in the northern part of the bay.
People here seem to love staying under the casuarina trees’ shade while enjoying cold drinks and local food, and the breeze from the sea.
It’s a great spot with beautiful views, amazing sand and without the crowds of some of the more developed beaches. It’s not every day you can be at a beach within minutes of landing on a plane.
It’s also possible to see the planes approaching Phuket airport from your sun chair and a short drive north to see them coming in right over the beach.
Enjoy the video!

Khlong Dao Beach Koh Lanta - Morning Beach Walk - Thailand
Koh Lanta has some of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. There are 9 beaches in the island with most holiday travelers visiting one or all of the 4 major beaches on the west side.
A great way to start the day is a walk on the beach. The cool mornings and the lack of crowds make it the best time of the day.
Klong Dao is the busiest beach on Koh Lanta. The close proximity to Ban Saladan provides a wider range of places to eat within easy walking distance. Better for families, Klong Dao has a long stretch of sand with shallow water.
This beach features sandy beaches sloping down to the sea, making it very suitable for water activities. There are many hotels, restaurants and bars to choose from.

Wat Som วัดส้ม - 650 Year Old Khmer Style Temple - Ayutthaya Thailand 2024
Wat Som วัดส้ม
Wat Som or the Monastery of the Citrus Fruit. It is situated in the Ayutthaya Historical Park east of Khlong Chakra Yai and Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park (grandmothers park).
There is no record of when exactly the monastery was built. Experts do estimate it to be feom the early Ayutthaya era, somewhere around 1350 to 1488 because of the shape of its main Khmer style prang and the decorative stucco.
The prang has some of the best preserved stucco ornaments of any temple in Ayutthaya. There are highly detailed geometric patterns and a number of mythological figures like Rahu eating the moon during an eclipse. Its lintels are especially worth a look.
To the east of the prang lies the foundations of a small wihan that is down to its base. You can see what it would’ve looked like but there are no walls remaining.
According to the study of the principal pagoda, it was made from bricks and decorated with lintel and stucco reliefs. It indicates the structure revolution and design that were derived and developed from 18th century (Buddhist calander) Khmer (ancient Cambodian) architecture. The evidence states that the age of the principal pagoda or Prang at Wat Som must be constructed in the Early Ayutthaya period similar to a small Prang at Wat Maha That (1374) and the principal Prang at Wat Ratchaburana (1424).
The ruin is small and not often visited do to it being away from the main part of the historical park. For anyone that enjoys seeing Khmer style temples it is worth a visit.

Wat Mai Chumpol - Historic 400 Year Old Temple Murals - Nakhon Luang Thailand
Wat Mai Prachumpol or Wat Mai Chumpol (often called Wat Mai by natives) is located on the East bank of Pa Sak River in Nakhon Laung.
According to the legend this temple was constructed sometime between middle - late Ayutthaya period (1610-1629 AD). The father of Thai History, HRH Prince Damrong Rajanuphab believed that the temple was built in the reign of King Prasart Thong. However, some sources say before it was converted to a temple, the building was initially intended to be a residence of King Song Tham during his boat trip to worship Phra Buddha Baht Saraburi. The temple underwent restoration during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V in 1893.
There are several significant architectures within the temple: (1) a main stupa (chedi) built in twelve-indented corners standing on a square platform 15 meters wide and 25 meters high, (2) an ordination hall (Ubosot) renovated on the former base, (3) a sermon hall (Vihara) situated Buddha images in the style of meditating and subduing the devil, and (4) mural paintings on the interior wall of the Vihara show the scenes of the life of Lord Buddha.
Wat Mai Prachumpol was registered as a National Ancient Monument on April 9, 1999.
The temple is small but it’s a great piece of Thai history. The murals and Chedi are worth a visit and can be combined with a stop at Prasat Nakhon Luang that is close by.

Prasat Nakhon Luang - 17th Century Ayutthaya Royal Palace With Drone Footage - Thailand
Prasat Nakhon Luang is situated on the east bank of the Pa Sak River in Nakhon Luang District of Ayutthaya province. The former royal residence is situated near the Pa Sak River.
Prasat Nakhon Luang is one of the five royal residences or palaces outside the city of
Ayutthaya cited in the old documents.
The Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya mention that King Prasat Thong sent a Siamese delegation to Angkor in Cambodia in 1631 AD with the task to bring back plans of the City of Angkor and its palaces. He then ordered a royal palace built, based on these plans, as a resting place half way between Ayutthaya and Tha Ruea. Tha Ruea was the final debarkation point for the royal barges, as from here travel continued on land towards the Buddha’s Footprint in Saraburi.
Prasat Nakhon Luang was erected by King Prasat Thong, being a design copied from the royal Khmer palace at Angkor Thom, to celebrate the event of the renewal of Cambodia's allegiance to Siam. The relations with the vassal-state of Cambodia were troubled after the death of King Srisuphanma of Cambodia in 1618. Although no record can be found in the royal chronicles of an invasion of Cambodia in the reign of King Prasat
Thong, it is assumed that a show of force was sufficient to renew Cambodia’s allegiance.
Prasat Nakhon Luang was used by the Siamese kings for day and overnight stays along the river.
Prasat Nakhon Luang is with Wat Chai Watthanaram and the two chedi of Wat Chumphon Nikayaram, one of the most important monuments of the Third architectural sub-period (1629-1732 AD), which saw the revival of the Khmer style, with the prang as the principal monument of the monastery.
On the site, north of Prasat Nakhon Luang stands a pavilion on a mound, containing an unfinished Dharma Chakra or “Wheel of the Law”, an early representation of the Buddha’s teaching. Wheels of the Law or Doctrine were carved long before the first representation of the image of the Buddha. This unfinished wheel, resembling the moon, is said to have floated to this area along the Pa Sak River, hence called Pra Jan Loi or Floating Moon. The stone was initially kept at Wat Theppa Jan and moved in 1899 AD to be enshrined on the premises of Prasat Nakhon Luang, where it was enshrined in a special hall.
The royal residence and the sanctuary must have been plundered by the Burmese during the Burma – Siamese War of 1766-7. The central prang presumably collapsed during the plunder or in later years. In the reign of King Chulalongkorn a new construction was established on top of the foundations of the old sanctuary. The western-styled building contains four footprints of the Buddha carved in stone, each about two and half meters wide
and five and half meters long. Prasat Nakhon Luang was registered as a national monument in 1935, in which year the restoration of the sanctuary began. The restoration works were finished in 1994.
The whole complex is really amazing. It is free to go and explore and a great piece of Thai history.

Rare 1,200 Year Old Javanese Temples in Surat Thani - Wat Long, Kaeo & Rattanaram - Thailand 2024
Scholars generally agree that the Old Malay-speaking, seafaring Srivijaya kingdom was based in parts of Sumatra and Java, its influence spreading as far as the Philippines and Madagascar from around the seventh to the 13th centuries.
Southern Thailand had an important settlement north of Surat Thani in the Chaiya district. An important settlement on the coast that lost its importance due to the sediment building up along the coast and land locking this community.
These temples dates back to around 1,200 years ago and are a great part of the regions history.
Wat Kaeo
A massive stupa at Wat Kaeo was built of bricks without mortar on a square indented base in a crucifix design, marking a typical plan of Candi in Indonesia. The base features a plain square supporting the main chamber 18 meters on each side.
Remarkably the exterior walls of this monument feature the pilater decoration with a groove in the centre, resembling the Cham architectural style at the Mae Son temple in Vietnam. There are four porches inside the stupa facing four directions. The southem porch remains the most completed condition, decorated with plasters and the carving of Kudu-arch the Indian horseshoe-arched window) that presumably ilustrating the real buildings in miniature. Meanwhile, the eastern porch marks an entrance to the main chamber (Garbhagniha), measuring 4 metres on each side, where the seated Buddha image in the gesture of enlightenment is housed inside as the principal sculpture. This porch associates with the niches on the lateral sides of the porch, housing Buddha images. The architectural style of Wat Kaeo suggest its comparative dating to the same period with Wat Phra Mahathat Chaiya and Wat Long.
Plenty of artifacts were found here, namely stone Buddha images, sculptures in Hinduism, a fragment of a hand holding a lotus motif, architectural fragments, Chinese and Vietnamese ceramics as well as terracotta pots from Sukhothai and Ayuthaya.
These artefacts correspond to the belief mentioned on the inscription no.23 (Wat Sema Mueang Inscription) that Wat Kaeo might be one of the three monuments built in the reign of King Srivijaya for his merit dedicated to the Lord Buddha, the Bodhisatva Padmapani and the Bodhisattva Vajrapani.
There is a clue to the treasure-trove of Wat Kaeo; that is, "Wat Kaeo stupa was built by King Si Thammasoke, and its splendour could be outstandingly seen”.
Wat Long
The name of this monastery Long is presumably derived from "Luang', meaning royal as the grand monastery. Wat Long is an abandoned Buddhist monastery with a large ruin of a brick monument as its bricks were dismantled to build the monastery walls of Phra Mahathat Chaiya.
This monument was built on a square indented base of 21.65 meters on each side, resembling the large brick stupa of Wat Kaeo. Remarkably, the exteror wals of this monument feature the plaster decoraton, showing well polished bricks without mortar. The main entrance is main passageway to its most sacred room (Gardhagriha)
Presumably, this monument was built during the 9th and 10th centuries and it was rebuilt again during the 13th-17th centuries.
Historic periods of this temple are 9th-10th Centuries and the Ayuthaya period 14th-18th Centures.
There is also an estimated 1,000 year Buddha image inside the ordination hall of Wat Rattanaram that is built next to the ruins of Wat Kaeo.
