August Week 1 - Hill Sprints, Ridge Riding, and Koko Head Hike!
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we try and follow the metrics on our Garmin watches to make sure we are including enough low aerobic and anaerobic workouts in our exercise routine. Most of the exercising we do ends up being right between those two in the high aerobic range. We’ll get into some more detail on these metrics in future videos as it appears to be very helpful in broadening our aerobic capacity and helping become much more well-rounded athletes. So, we work in some hill sprints to try and get our heart rate up in the zone 5 range, which is pretty close to maximum.
We tackle Koko Head Hike again for the first time since our Nieces and Nephew were here in June and then do some more cycling as Jay is preparing for the 112 mile Dick Evans Memorial Road Race around the island of Oahu at the end of the month. This was a really good productive week!

July Week 5 - The Na Wahine & Kane Sprint Triathlon 2023
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we discuss our Lanikai 8k performance during our Monday morning walk and then do the Na Wahine (Ladies) & Kane (Mens) Sprint Triathlon at Kapiolani Park. It consists of a 500m ocean swim followed by a 12 mile bike through Kahala and around Diamond Head and then a 5k run around Kapiolani Park. Jay lent his road bike to Michael’s friend Ricardo (avid mountain biker) so he could compete in his first triathlon. Jay chased him the whole race…

This week we do a little running and a little cycling in preparation for the Na Wahine/Kane Sprint Triathlon coming up at the end of July. Then on Sunday morning, travel over to Kailua on the Windward side of Oahu for the Kailua Beach Shark Chase run.
Was a very challenging and fun run for us and our feet were very exfoliated afterward, lol!

July Week 2 - Snorkeling at Sharks Cove, New Shoes and a New Triathlon Bike!
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we travel all the way up to the North Shore of Oahu for a morning of snorkeling at Sharks Cove (no sharks there, the cove just appears to be shaped like a shark from above).
Michelle finally found the right shoes for her feet for running in a soft cushy Saucony Ride 15. Got a 2nd pair on Prime Day just for good measure.
Jay picked up a second hand 2006 Cervelo P3 carbon fiber triathlon bike as well to up his triathlon game and get more competitive in his age group with a bike that is a better fit for his frame.
No races this week but we’re right back to the races with a unique shark chase beach run in Kailua next week 😊

This Week’s Activity and Events:

This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we are back to running again as our Nieces and Nephew have flown back to Virginia. June Week 3 - Hiking Diamond Head and Makapuu with Nieces & Nephew. Back to running and training!
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we continued to host our Nieces and Nephew from Virginia and did some hiking, surfing and beach time.
We took them hiking at Diamond Head and Makapuu Lighthouse and then to Makapuu beach their last day here before heading to the airport for their long trip home. We miss having them here with their youth and energy 😊
After they flew home, it was back to running for us with a fun surfing day at Waikiki to cap off a great week!

June Week 2 - Family in town for sun, fun and a little bit of racing on the windward side!
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we hosted our Nieces and Nephew from Virginia and treated them to the island and one of our races! The only thing we missed was J Dolan’s pizza the night before as we went to a Luau on the North Shore instead. If you’re coming to Oahu, Toa Luau in Waimea Valley is one of the best luaus! We have been to almost all of them on the island and this was our first time checking out Toa Luau as they are fairly new here (5 years) and located on the opposite side of the island from us. I know, you’re thinking, “hey, it’s an island, how far can it be?” Well, about 60 miles, so it is quite the trip, but I can confirm it was well worth it 😊
We competed in the Hoomau 10k on the Waimanalo side of the island for a beautiful sunrise run and our nieces and nephew performed awesome for their very first 10k, we are super proud! We also took them to Arizona Memorial, Hanauma Bay for snorkeling, Waikiki for surfing and sunshine, hiking Koko Head, Diamond Head and Makapuu Lighthouse. Was truly a fun filled week with them and hope they can come back again someday.

June Week 1 - IRONMAN 70.3 (Honu Half-Ironman Kona, Hawaii)
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week Jay competes in and completes the Honu Half-Ironman in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii! This was quite an adventure covering 1.2 miles of ocean swimming followed by 56 miles on the bike and then a 13.1 mile run to complete the 70.3 mile race. It was a sweltering hot day in Kona and this race challenged Jay’s physical limits. Find out the “why” behind this crazy adventure…

May Week 4 - Honolulu Triathlon Recap & Then Hibiscus Half Marathon
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we talk about how we did on the Honolulu Triathlon compared to the last time we did it in 2014 when we weren't really all that serious about training and hadn't yet caught the "bug."
Jay talks about the upcoming Honu Half-Ironman (IRONMAN 70.3) and some nervousness and expectations. He also talks more about the Asics Gel Nimbus 24s and how they are doing after a few weeks and the shoes he plans to wear for the upcoming half marathon and Ironman 70.3, New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080 v12.
We ran the Hibiscus Half Marathon together with our friend, Ed and this is the first time we have run a race together since the last Hibiscus Half Marathon in 2022 (our very first half marathon ever). We even had a chicken join us on this race at the top of Diamondhead :-)
Jay felt really good taking a nice easy pace for him while pushing Michelle to set a personal record of 2 hours and 12 minutes in the half marathon!

May Week 3 - The 2023 Honolulu Triathlon
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we prep for the Honolulu Triathlon. We try to get in some sprints on the nice cushy track at the local high school but get kicked out because we didn’t know it was only open to the public between 3-7pm, not 6am when it is much cooler. Bummer, cause the track was really soft!
Pre-race we enjoyed some J Dolan’s pizza and beer 😊
This is the first time we have done the Honolulu Triathlon event since 2014 and only my 3rd time and Michelle’s 2nd time doing this triathlon. We are definitely looking to beat our times from 9 years ago when not nearly in as good a shape as we are now even though we were both much younger.
I was able to beat my old time by 15 minutes and Michelle beat hers by 2 minutes so we were both happy with the result!

May Week 2 - Preparing our bodies for 3 straight weekend of big events!
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week Jay does a lot of talking, lol! First, reflecting on the 50 mile bike and 10 mile run on Sunday the 7th of May and realizing that more nutrition and hydration needed while on the bike to be as prepared as possible for the hot and humid run portion of the upcoming Ironman 70.3.
Jay does a “crazy” afternoon run for the first time and it learns that it doesn’t totally suck!
Michelle and Jay run together through the scenic Portlock neighborhood in Hawaii Kai and Jay thinks he’s dying because his Garmin watch is tracking Michelle’s heartrate instead of his own 😉 Jay later finds out that he had “okay’d” using an external heart rate monitor (Michelle’s smartwatch) about a week earlier and didn’t realize what had happened at the time.
Lastly, Michelle and Jay swim with their friend Ed 2000m at Ala Moana Beach Park. Michelle discovers that there are Jellyfish in the water that day, AFTER we have finished the swim and Jay and Ed are out biking 😊

May Week 1 - New Shoes and 50 Mile Bike Ride Followed by 10 Mile Run
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we try out some new shoes and talk about our goals for finishing times in this year’s Honolulu Marathon (our 2nd one ever) in December.
Jay and his friends Mike and Ed ramp up their training for the Honu Half-Ironman in Kona, HI (IRONMAN 70.3) by doing a 2000m swim Saturday and then a 50 mile bike ride followed by a hot and humid 10 miles run right afterward. Got to enjoy some Diamond Head outlook scenery along the way.
BTW, I did finish the 10 mile run and recovered well once I got some fluids in me. Learned that I need to carry even more nutrition on me and hydrate even more while on the bike so that I don’t faceplant during the hot and humid run portion.

April Week 4 - The Haleiwa Metric Century Ride
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week was a rainy week and we took advantage of the downtime to recover and prepare for the Sunday Haleiwa Metric Century Ride organized by the Hawaii Bicycling League.
We were blessed with an absolutely beautiful day on the North Shore of Oahu for this long and sometimes bumpy 62 mile ride. Was overall a great experience as Michelle rode with a solid group of ladies and I rode with Mike and a couple of friends.
Now that we have 62 miles under our belt, the 56 we'll do on the upcoming Ironman 70.3 in Kona on June 3rd will be no problem (wink wink)!

April Week 3 - Lessons Learned from the Hapalua Half Marathon and a Brutal Brick Workout on Hills!
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we talk about how we did on the Hapalua Half Marathon and Michelle shares her insights into what can go wrong when you don’t get the proper sleep, hydration, and nutrition while dealing with additional stress in the days leading up to a big race.
Jay continued his bike work with a 22 mile ride Tuesday and then Saturday, we both completed a tough “brick” workout on the Olamana Hills loop (Old Kalanianaole Rd) in Kailua. Each loop was 3.1 miles (5km) and after 8 loops (roughly 25 miles) we had total elevation gain of over 2500ft. Then after the ride, we put on our running shoes and completed 2 loops the other direction on foot. This type of multisport workout gets the name “brick” because that is what your legs feel like when trying to run after a long bike ride, lol!
After the long day biking and running, we hit up the huli huli chicken truck and devoured a whole chicken, two scoops rice and corn on the way home and wow, it hit the spot!
Sunday, Jay did an ocean swim at Outrigger canoe club to get a workout in the currents and waves of Waikiki. See you next week!

This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we try something new and do “mile repeats” training where we completed a 6 mile run sprinting a mile, then walking for 2 minutes, then sprinting the next mile and so on. I learned of this training method from the “Kofuzi YouTube Channel.”
Then, Sunday, we competed in the annual Hapalua Half-Marathon, running through Waikiki to downtown Honolulu and then back through Waikiki and up and around Diamond Head. Was our first time doing this race and a great experience!

April Week 1 - Wet Running, Wet Riding and Talking Healthy Gut Microbiome
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we talk about Jay’s sign up for his first ever Half-Ironman in Kona, Hawaii June 3, 2023. The race is known as the Honu Ironman 70.3 as the entire race encompasses 70.3 total miles (1.2 mile swim to start, followed by a 56 mile bike ride, and finishing off with a 13.1 mile half-marathon).
We also talk about how amazing a healthy gut microbiome is for your energy and overall health and the food items you can consume to help build your healthy gut microbiome.
We complete a rainy and wet run on Thursday the 6th and then Jay and a couple friends ride their bikes 50 miles in the rain and wind and then run 6 miles afterward. Jay talked these two friends into doing the Honu Ironman with him because misery loves company!

March Week 4 - The Windward Half-Marathon
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week we prepared for the Windward Half-Marathon by doing a fairly light week of training with only one running session and the usual Crossfit and 3.5 mile walk Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 😊
We enjoyed the newly re-opened Tex808 BBQ in Hawaii Kai as a change up to our usual pizza and beer fuel up session. The pulled pork, brisket, tater tots, and mac-n-cheese must have worked wonders because we both ran our personal bests for a half-marathon. Jay finished in 2nd in his age group division. March Week 3 - Cycling THE Hill and Michelle's Age Group Win at the Ku'ikahi 10k
This Week’s Activity and Events:
This week Jay tackled a nearby steep hill on his bike that is 360ft in elevation that we have now named, THE Hill. This hill was definitely much tougher than Heartbreak Hill, which we have cycled over in previous videos and we sure will do so again soon 😊
We enjoyed J Dolan’s pizza and beer, with a side of “frings”(French fries and onion rings) to fuel up for our Ku’ikahi 10k at Ala Moana Beach Park. Michelle won her age group division and Jay came in a lowly 3rd “cause it was hot!”.

March Week 2 - Sunrise, Crossfit and a Great Week of Training!
Michelle definitely got more out of this week than I did as she put in a solid 15k run on Thursday. Jay did feel good though getting the 40 mile bike ride done and following it up with a strong 5k run. Weather finally getting better here in Honolulu as the last several weeks have been pretty stormy and windy.
We're not complaining though as many of you are dealing with never ending snow and cold, just saying, harder to training in stormy weather, warm or not ;-)

March Week 1 - King's Runner 10k
The Honolulu King's Runner 10k was the big highlight for this week as both Michelle and I ran our best 10k times with Jay coming in at 46:50 and Michelle at 62:02 for the 6.2 mile race. Was a perfect day to run and were joined by over 3000 fellow runners as we ran through downtown Honolulu to Ala Moana Beach Park and back.
The day prior we completed a 21 mile bike ride and met an amazing young artist named Bronson from OahuArt808 selling his art at the Diamond Head scenic lookout. Check him out on Instagram @OahuArt808.
We pretty much got rained out the rest of the week and had rest days on Tuesday and Thursday (maybe why we ran the 10k so fast).

Feb Week 4 - The Great Aloha Run and the Kailua 10-Miler
This week we welcome back the Great Aloha Run in person in Honolulu! We last ran in this event in Feb 2020 and used to be the longest run we had ever completed at about 8.2 miles (from the Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium).
It wasn't until training for the Honolulu Marathon last year that we exceeded 8.2 miles on any running activity. Now, 8.2 miles for us is no longer a scary and daunting feat and we went into this "fun" run actually looking forward to having fun :-)
The very next weekend we competed in the Kailua 10-miler and both ran a hard race in our first event of this kind. The night before, we changed things up and tried out a new local New Jersey style pizza restaurant in Hawaii Kai, called Repetti's Pizza and Provisions. The pizza was excellent and worked wonders to fuel us up for the 10 mile run the next morning!

This week we focused on long slow runs in preparation for the Great Aloha Run on President's Day, the first in person running of this fun race since 2020.
