The iconic music video for "Buddy Holly" which features the band performing at Arnold's Drive-In from the 70s American telivision show Happy Days was created without the use of computer generated imagery (CGI).
"The best thing about that video is that there’s no CGI going on. It’s all just clever camera work. And clever editing. I get to point at the Fonz and he goes ‘Ayyy.’ I mean, come on. I loved Happy Days as a kid. It doesn’t get any cooler than that." - Pat Wilson, UNDONE: The Complete Oral History Of Weezer, Phawker, Dec 11, 2018

"Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it" appears to be the theme that surrounds Metallica's "King Nothing." A song about someone so obsessed with fame and power that he doesn't care about anything else and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. All the while oblivious to the fact that their fame and power ultimately means very little.
The music video focuses on a king... or, let's just call him a guy with a Burger King crown, as he wanders around in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Tossing his crown aside only to go full-on Bugs Bunny by pulling an identical crown out of nowhere and placing up back upon his head. Until he throws that one on the ground too. And the cycle continues...
Technically, the "middle of nowhere" was Park City, Utah where the music video was filmed by director Matt Mahurin. You may recognize some other music videos he created, including "Primal Scream" by Motley Crue, "Little Things" by Bush, or "Angry Chair" by Alice In Chains. He also worked with Metallica previously on their video for "The Unforgiven." And would work with them again for the music video of "The Unforgiven II." Because who else would you get to direct a sequel music video to a sequel song other than the man who directed the first one?
Fans have speculated whether Metallica are singing about themselves, due to the lines "Off to never never land" sung at the end of "King Nothing" which were borrowed from "Enter Sandman" which was one of Metallica's chart-topping singles from their previous self titled album. Metallica were arguably the kings of thrash metal at the time. Perhaps the band felt this title ultimately didn't mean much, as they elected to take their music in a different direction for Load and Reload.
One fan in particular suggests that James Hetfield was messing around with playing the "Enter Sandman" guitar riff backwards, which evolved in to the riff for "King Nothing." I'm not sure if this is true or not but I think I can hear a bit of a resemblance between to two songs, can you?

Korn's Jonathan Davis HATES Nu Metal
Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis hates the term nu-metal and prefers to think of Korn as a heavy funk band.
"Yeah, that nu-metal thing. It was funny how they came up with that ****, because when we first came out, no one knew what the **** to do with us. I’d like to find that f***ing writer that coined that term, nu-metal.
When we came out, we toured with everyone from No Doubt, Pennywise, Cadillac Trance, Sick of It All, KMFDM, it was all over the place. So finally someone came up with “nu-metal” and everyone copped our s***. I didn’t understand it, like I never thought of us to be metal to begin with.
Yeah, we’re heavy and downtuned, but metal, to me, is like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, that’s metal man. I always thought of us as a funk band, that funky groovy... Then Limp Bizkit came up and we found them and took them on tour and blew them up, and all the other bands came and we had a scene which was really good and solidified with the Family Values Tour." - Davis, Rank Your Records... Prodigal John Frusciante Returns to Red Hot Chili Peppers
Guitarist John Frusciante left the Red Hot Chili Peppers following the success of Blood Sex Sugar Magik because the band's newfound popularity was too overwhelming for him to handle. He also spiraled downward after developing an addiction to cocaine and heroin which developed while he was still performing with the band. Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction would be hired in his place to record One Hot Minute. However, Dave would leave the band while touring to support the album as it appeared he just wasn't a great fit for the band. According to bassist Flea:"Things got weird, and we parted ways with Dave. Which was a sad thing. He didn't quit, and we didn't fire him; it just kind of went that way.And because of that, we ended up getting back with John. We got in my garage and started playing, and it felt really natural. Really good, un-forced and uncontrived, and fun." - Flea, Red Hot Chili Peppers Discuss Their New Energy And Californication, J.D. Considine, Guitar World (Dec 9, 2011)Flea invited John back to the Red Hot Chili Peppers following his successful completion of rehab which was thought to be inspired by a promise from Flea that the two would perform in a band together again if the guitarist was able to get sober.VP of A&R at Warner Brothers, and CEO of Birdman Records, David Katznelson spoke with Rolling Stone shortly after John's return in 1998:"To get him back in the band is a good thing for them... He's still a great guitar player, and I don't think people realize the significance that John played in the Chili Peppers' sound. He wrote the music for 'Under the Bridge' and 'Breaking the Girl.' ... John has problems like anybody else does, but he's in a good way right now... He's one of those guys who can really turn himself around. Flea wouldn't work with him if he wasn't clean." - Katznelson, Red Hot Redux, Richard Skanse, Rolling Stone (Apr 30, 1998)

NO CURSING Slipknot Songs Subliminal Verses
Vocalist Corey Taylor made a conscious decision to avoid cursing on Slipknot's Vol 3 (The Subliminal Verses) due to criticism regarding the amount of cursing on their first two studio albums. The frontman himself told an interviewer in 2019:
"I was catching so much hell. Whether it was Slipknot or Stone Sour... 'Oh, he can't truly be a great writer because he can't write without using expletives!' and whatnot.
"I was, like, 'Oh, really? OK...' So I did that whole album specifically for that. To me, it was a bigger 'F*** you' to write a whole album without saying that... I was pretty proud of that." - Taylor, Corey Taylor Explains Only Slipknot Album That Has No Profanities, Jomatomi, Ultimate Guitar (Oct 1, 2019)

SONG MEANING Deftones Feiticeira
Feiticeira Explained
Some Deftones fans have speculated that the song Feiticeira borrows it's name from a popular Brazilian celebrity named Joana Prado Belfort, who danced under the stage name "Feiticeira" which translates to "witch." Some Portuguese Deftones fans have expressed that they believe the song is intending to describe someone so beautiful and captivating that she can put a man under her "spell," leaving him at her complete control.
As songwriter Chino Moreno explains:
"The name Feiticeira is some Portuguese name that I read in a magazine and just liked. It's based on the scenario of being taken captive. It's completely fictional. I want that people who listen to it feel like they are the ones in the situation. Because of that I sing it in first person. It's up to people to figure out if i'm having fun (with them) or not, even though it sounds a bit eerie." - Moreno, White Pony, Wikipedia (Accessed Aug 24, 2023)

Episode 27 is an After Dark playlist, a collection of club-style tunes to set the mood for good night out or a fun night in. These playlists also give me an opportunity to curate a collection of songs featuring some of my own favorite artists, rather than trying to focus on highlighting up-and-coming artists.
Bands and artists in this playlist include:
Modern Error, Highly Suspect, William Control, Thrice, Ima Robot, Simple Creatures, Dacian Miron, Machine Gun Kelly, She Wants Revenge, Deftones, TV On The Radio, Local H, HIM, Neon Trees, Foo Fighters, Bloodhound Gang, Blink 182, The Network, As You Wish Ambient
Features and discussions include:
-Dacian Miron is one of the perfect artists for this playlist, with a blend of emo rock that is perfect for a club environment. Check out his video for "Feelin' Dangerous" and then watch our review video for his album Slightly Mysterious, Somewhat Delirious!
-The self-titled album by She Wants Revenge is one of my favorite albums. One that I can listen to from start to finish. Their song "Tear You Apart" was huge on mainstream radio airwaves back in the mid 00s, however I have noticed a lot of people from the younger generations are unaware of this masterpiece. For shame!
-"Sextape" by The Deftones is an easy nominee for sexiest rock song ever! At least in my book, it is.
-Who did it better? TV On The Radio or Local H? Judge for yourself as the latter cover one of the former's biggest hits, "Wolf Like Me."
-If you like electronic music, check out As You Wish Ambient! This is my electronic music project that I have been developing. I recently released the Aurora Moon EP, which is a small collection of relaxing ambient tunes. However, I'm also aiming to release a full length album of progressive house tunes this Spring or early Summer. Check out the visualizer video for "Transcendo" in this week's playlist. Episode 31 is a Hard Rock Hardcore playlist where we try to p*** off some hardcore kids by adding their favorite bands to a "pop punk" playlist. Hardcore kids, or "melodic hardcores" as I think they prefer to be called, can sometimes be a bit snobbish and look down upon pop punk fans because clearly hardcore is an edgier word than punk and melodies are superior to pops. This playlist is a tribute to the melodies of punk, er... I mean "hardcore."
Bands and artists in this playlist include:
As Everything Unfolds, Bala, Hard Reset, Headwreck, Immunity, Dream State, The Pretty Reckless, Thrice, I Prevail (feat. Caleb Shomo of Beartooth), Crystal Joilena, Far'N'Hate, Hidden Figures, Through the Oculus, Blood Youth, Imminence, Silverstein

Song Meaning Californication Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Red Hot Chili Peppers hit song "Californication" is a compilation of stories and scenes that singer Anthony Kiedis has witnessed while in the city or throughout his daily life. The lyrics about "psychic spies in china' were inspired by a woman Anthony witnessed rambling on the street. The song also makes various references to films and pop-culture, including Star Wars and Star Trek through the lines "Space may be the final frontier but its made in a Hollywood basement" and "Alderaan's not far away."
As the singer himself told Uncut Magazine in 1999:
"Well, it’s a new word, so it’s open to interpretation. For me it’s about the process of the world being affected for better, for worse, for ugly, for beautiful by the art and culture that is born in this State.” - Kiedis, The Spice Boys, James McNair, Unknown Publication (accessed through TheChiliSource.com)

"Yeah, like 24 songs were actually finished in the studio, and we're going to put 14 of them on the record. It was hard for us to agree which ones we think are the best. Metallica's Load & Reload Album Art EXPLAINED

Have you ever looked at the album art for Metallica's Load or Reload albums and wondered what the heck it was supposed to be? Perhaps you were like me and assumed it was an abstract painting of a flame or maybe a lava lamp. Well, I'm afraid that the answer is something far more disgusting. In fact, the artwork isn't a painting at all.
The image was created by artist Andres Serrano who was creating a series of artistic photographs with bodily fluids. The image used for the cover of Metallica's Load was made by mixing bovine blood with... well... let's just say he mixed it with his own happy creamy feelings before he smashed the mixture between two sheets of glass and took a picture of it. And suddenly the title Load makes me feel much more uncomfortable. The image for Reload was created using the same bovine blood mixed with a yellow liquid, I'll let you guess what the yellow liquid is and where it came from.
Artist Andres Serrano spoke with Metal Hammer in 2022:
“It was Kirk and Lars who asked for the picture for Load. I met with them at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, and we arranged for them to use the image for the album, merchandise and all promotional purposes. I was flattered and honoured they wanted it...
Because it spoke to them. They were drawn to it and I’m glad they were, because the image and album was a match made in Heaven...
It was part of a series called ‘Bodily Fluids’. They were photographs intended to look like paintings...
I bought it (bovine blood) at the butcher. It would be labelled ‘edible beef blood’ and I would buy a gallon of it whenever I needed it. The blood would darken after a day, so I thought I needed fresh blood to get the bright red. Later, someone told me to put the dark blood in a blender and it would brighten up again...
I think the images were a hit. I read a review once where the Load album was named No.1 on a list of best album covers. We know Lars and Kirk were happy with it but James was not. I think James is still fuming!” - Serrano, An Interview With The Artist Who Created Metallica's Load..., Eleanore Goodman, Metal Hammer (Sep 20, 2022)
Frontman James Hetfield was a tad uncomfortable with the artwork but he was a good sport and went along with the concept which had been picked out by guitarist Kirk Hammett after he discovered Serrano's work on the music video for "Crush My Soul" by Godflesh.
As Hetfield told Classic Rock magazine:
"The whole cover thing, it went against what I was feeling...
How can I put this? ... Lars and Kirk were very into abstract art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. It was a statement around all that. I love art, but not for the sake of shocking others. I think the cover of "Load" was just a p***-take around all that. I just went along with the make-up and all of this crazy, stupid s*** that they felt they needed to do." - Hetfield, Metallica's James Hetfield Explains Why Dave Mustaine "Had To Go", Classic Rock (Jul 2009), cataloged by Blabbermouth.net
In regards to using the same artist and concept for Reload, Hetfield had this to say:
"I hated it, but it had to match... It's matching hatred. I'm not a big fan of the man and his perversions. There's art and then there's just sick *mf-ers. And he's one of them. [Laughs] The thing is, they belong together. I don't care if the guy blows donkeys. The art had to match." - Hetfield, Five Things You Didn't Know About Reload, Jon Weiderhorn, Revolver (Nov 17, 2017)

Song Meaning Korn Freak On A Leash
"Freak On A Leash" is a song about Jonathan Davis' feelings about the corporate music industry.
"That's my song that rails out against the music industry... Like I'm this freak paraded around, but I got corporate America fuckin' making all the money while it's taking a part of me. It's like they stole something from me–they stole my innocence and I'm not calm anymore. I worry constantly. I'm not just talkin' about the record business. Everything's involved. I've lost something. I'm not all there anymore. I love what I do, but I wish I could have it all back. It's like the "Peter Pan syndrome." I wish I could still fly." - Davis, "A Cut-by-cut Look at Korn's 'Follow the Leader' With Jonathan, Mitch Schneider Organization, quoted through Ultimate Guitar (last edited Jun 22, 2017)
"[I wrote “Freak On A Leash” about] the music industry, entertainment in general — how the machine worked. The label, management, publishers, everything that it involved. Looking back on it, “Something takes a part of me” was [about how] they were taking the fun [out] of making music and making it a business.
You can ask anyone in my band, I hate the f****** music [industry] ... I love singing and I love f****** making music... I know it’s stupid, but this is how I roll. It was me lashing out, because when [we] started getting bigger after Life is Peachy and got a bigger budget, I [was] watching it become more of a business." - Davis, The definitive oral history of Korn's "Freak On A Leash", NM Mashurov, Fader (Aug 14, 2018)

Do you know how much the original artwork for Metallica's Master of Puppets is worth? Why did someone throw a sandwich at guitarist Kirk Hammett? Who was the one-armed man that drummer Lars Ulrich called to borrow something he probably wouldn't be using anymore?
Stick around as we answer these questions and more, on....
10 Fun Facts about Master of Puppets by Metallica
1. The Freaks Come Out At Night *
If its true that the freaks come out at night then I consider Metallica to be quite freaky. Now its not at all uncommon for musical performers to be nocturnal creatures. After all, they stay up late doing their job entertaining us during our non-working hours. Quite often they have to spend their own late night hours packing things up and getting back on the road to the next tour destination.
Its also not at all uncommon for a band to spend their late night hours drinking and enjoying themselves, especially a band like Metallica. A band that was so well known for their excessive drinking that venues often knew to stock their bars in advance of a Metallica performance, as the band would typically drink themselves in to a "festive" mood before going on stage.
So why not carry those same hours and routines while working in the studio? Well that's exactly what Metallica did, opting to record Master of Puppets at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark where the band began work each day at 7pm. Now, those who live in or have been to Denmark know just how dark things can get in the Fall months. With members of the band waking up in the afternoon to begin what is essentially a graveyard shift. Hey, a graveyard shift of recording music is still a graveyard shift. Even if it doesn't crush a person's soul in the way working in an office does, the members of Metallica must have grown quite pale as their exposure to the sun was minimal.
Hmm... perhaps Master of Puppets should have been called the black album? :rimshot:
(Boo this man)
Drummer Lars Ulrich told Revolver what the process was like:
"We worked at night, so for three months I don't think we saw daylight. This was like September, October, November, December — so in Denmark, if you wake up at four in the afternoon, it's already dark. So we'd wake up... and then we'd go down into the studio and start at 7, and then we'd work until 5 or 6 in the morning, then go back to the hotel and do the breakfast buffet. And then we would go to bed. So we never saw daylight for the whole time, and my main recollection is just how dark it was! [Laughs]
But the main thing about Master of Puppets, compared to Ride the Lightning, is that we had more time to make it. We were originally going to record in L.A., but our management had figured out that, with the way the currency was, we could get 12 or 14 weeks of studio time in Denmark, instead of eight weeks in L.A. And that was important, because at that time, the big thing that was driving the records was sonics — you needed more time to get the big drum sounds... It was the time of Pyromania and Back in Black, and it was all about how big the kick drum sounded. So it was important to have more time in the studio, and that's why we were in Denmark." - Ulrich, Metallica's Lars Ulrich on Master of Puppets..., Dan Epstein, Revolver (Nov 7, 2017)

MEANING of The Colour And The Shape Foo Fighters
The Foo Fighters' second album's title was inspired by a bowling pin purchased at a thrift shop.
The band's tour manager Gil Norton was known to rummage around at thrift stores and come back with odd knick-knacks and memorabilia. At one point he purchased a bowling pin with red and white stripes because he enjoyed "the colour and the shape" of it. The band found the phrase memorable and humorous enough to use it as an album title. Complete with the British spelling of "colour" with a "u" in homage to Norton who is British.

ALBUM REVIEW: THE DEBUT by JASON FURLONG | POP PUNK RADIO
For Fans Of: Machine Gun Kelly, Kid Vision, Dacian Miron
Review: "Welcome to my life, a place that I don't even like" sings Jason Furlong to open his 2021 EP titled simply The Debut. Themes of depression and angst fill the album's six tracks, nearly all of which are worthy of being released as their own single. MGK better take notice, because Jason Furlong is ready to give the rapper-turned-pop-punk some good company.
"Prisoner of Your Love" is a song that questions one's involvement in a toxic relationship while asking the age old question "is it me, or is it you?" As usual, the answer isn't about just one person. "All we want is to be free, but we're both scared to see the end of us."
"How can I love you if I don't love myself?" asks Jason on "Run Away." Despite the self-reflective emotion of the lyrics, the songs actually have an upbeat and optimistic quality and are relatable without coming across as whiny. "I'm not ready to settle down, I'm just trying to find myself right now." This isn't your Uncle's early 2000's era emo, this music is self-aware. "Maybe you'd be better off just saying farewell."
Jason Furlong is an artist who wears his heart on his sleeve and his music has incredible potential "bottled up inside" just waiting to break out. The beats are well produced, the melodies and rhymes are catchy. My only complaint is that his lyrics can be a bit too upfront at times and could benefit from the use of more metaphor.
In my humble opinion, Jason Furlong is already walking the right path to a notable music career. He's at the large wooden door with a ring full of a thousand keys in his hands. All he has to do is find one that takes his songwriting to another level. I think that he can do it.
Rating: 7.5 / 10 - Jason Furlong is a talented songwriter who is poised to make big noise in the scene.

The band's hit song "Peaches" was inspired by two seperate incidents. The first includes a time when Chris Ballew waited under a peach tree at his girlfriend's house while on acid.
"So, the whole song started with me taking LSD and going to a girl’s house to tell her that I liked her while on LSD, which is a really great idea! [Laughs] Or, it seemed like a good idea at the time...
I went to the door and knocked on the door, so I thought, “Well, I’ll just wait for her.” And I sat under her peach tree. There were peaches that had fallen, that were in various stages of decay. And, of course, in my state of mind that I was in, I just started diving in and squeezing the peaches and mixing it with my desire for the girl and the desire for the peaches and juicy weirdness and ants crawling all around.
But she never showed up, so I left. But the song didn’t really come to life until much later..."

Recently skimmed over Paramore's new album This Is Why which was released today.
1. This Is Why
The first single comes across as a basement dweller's anthem. Hayley Williams complains that other people should keep their opinions to themselves and talks about why she never wants to leave the house. How ironic.
2. News
The chorus rocks but the verse repeats itself constantly in the same vein as Green Day's "Know Your Enemy." Unlike the opening track, I enjoy the lyrical content.
3. Running Out Of Time
I thought this was going to be a pop/punk or emo album. I was clearly wrong. That being said, I do enjoy the song more-so than the previous two.
4. C'est Comme Ca
Have you ever noticed that sometimes the songs that are immediatly catchy tend to become annoying after a while and sometimes the songs that initially miss their mark on first listen can grow on us? This song feels like the prior. Very catchy, I do enjoy it. But I can see myself skipping this type of song on future listens.
5. Big Man, Little Dignity
I really enjoy the music. I mean I really enjoy it. Too bad the lyrics are filled with misandry. Scorned modern day toxic-feminists will probably eat it up though.
6. You First
Keep this song in mind when the lyrics ironically backfire... wishing bad karma on others is just bad karma for ourselves. Another song toxic modern-day feminists will eat up. So at least Hayley has chosen an audience and is going for it.
7. Figure 8
Weak rhymes. Lyrical content that seems to play the victim and point fingers while ignoring any personal accountability.
8. Liar
Hayley's voice sounds amazing. The sound is a departure from what fans of Riot! are familiar with but if you can get past that, it's actually a very enjoyable song. The lyrics are vulnerable and take self-accountability. This is the best song on the album, in my own humble opinion.
9. Crave
Another beautiful pop-rock song. This feels like a song that could stand the test of time.
10. Thick Skull
A somber tune with a touch of psychedelic guitar. Not bad.
Overall Take:
This is NOT a pop-punk or emo album. Paramore are clearly a pop-rock band now. Perhaps they've been one for a while. I honestly haven't kept up with them aside from their first album. Hayley intentionally refused to become a Top 40 artist when writing music for their breakthrough album Riot! However, it seems as if she very quickly went against her original ideals. Nothing wrong with that by the way, just a bit different from what I was expecting.
Not sure who shit in Hayley's cheerios during the pandemic but she sure seems to be taking a lot of anger out on men with this album. Take it out on the scumbag politicians, Hayley. Not on the guys who supported your music early on...
Hayley has clearly become a vehement feminist, for better and worse. While one can certainly understand why she might feel the way she feels, it doesn't mean that I have to buy in to it either. But this doesn't feel like an album that was made for a person like myself, and that's ok.
There are two songs on the album that I really enjoy (Lira & Crave) and can see myself putting them in to a playlist but overall I won't be returning to this album.
