Guttermouth Albums Ranked TIER LIST
*Disclaimer* If you are someone who is easily offended and has the sense of humor of a porcupine, you probably won't like Guttermouth. Their music is quite vulgar, heavily laced with sarcasm, and is generally not meant to be taken seriously. You have been warned.
1. Friendly People (1994) - FAV
Pro: First release for Offspring front man Dexter Holland's Nitro Records. (Yes, we are still listing this a "pro" even though we're very upset with Mr. Holland for firing drummer Pete Parada who's doctor advised him not to take the vaccine because it could be worse for his particular situation).
I enjoy the spoken word lyric style of "You're Late"
and the ska style guitar strumming on "Veggicide"
Difficult to pick just 5 songs for my list of album favorites.
All of Guttermouth's albums are vulgar but with songs like "Asshole" and "Bullshit" this album is definitely not for those who are easily offended.
Con: The last time I saw Guttermouth perform was at Warped Tour in 2009 and they didn't play the crowd favorite "Asshole" despite the fact that everyone was chanting for it.
Fav songs: "End on Nine"
2. The Album Formerly Known As Full Length LP (1991/96) - FAV
Pro: Originally released in 1991, but was re-released in 1996 with the additional tracks from 7-inch releases during the same era. The CD version of this re-release was how I first discovered Guttermouth.
If someone asked me to recommend three albums that define "punk rock" in my book, this would be one of those albums. Fast, aggressive, and drenched with sarcasm.
I still hear the intro to "Bruce Lee vs the KISS Army" in my head whenever I see anything relating to martial arts on TV.
I love songs like "Hypocrite" and "1, 2, 3... Slam!" that change the pace throughout the song. Guttermouth is quite good at this. Awesome ebb-and-flow energy songs to experience in a mosh-pit.
"Mr Barbeque" & Lagwagon's "Mr Coffee" will have to duke it out as contenders for Best "Mr" Songs in punk. (Mr BBQ vs Mr Coffee cartoon?)
4. Musical Monkey (1997)
Pro: Two songs essentially "defined" this album upon it's release. That's not taking anything away from the rest of the album because the rest of the album is awesome. But it speaks to just how edgy and memorable they were at the time. These songs had nop music videos on MTV and major radio would never even think of playing the songs even if they edited it. But these songs went viral among the skatepunks and X Games generation in an era just before Jackass was about to bring the skateboarding music scene to the masses.
I've always enjoyed Guttermouth's spoken word songs; "What If?" is a funny tune about a hypothetical scenario involving Fred Schneider of the B-52's trying out as vocalist for The Doors.
"Baker's Dozen" is a comedic look at different styles in the scene.
Con: A buddy of mine who was getting interested in freestyle rap at the time once sat in the back of the car while we were driving around listening to this album and said "the rhymes on this album are weak." He's not entirely wrong. Mark is a clever lyricist but there are indeed some weak or forced rhymes on a few of the tracks.
Fav Songs: "Perfect World"
7. Gusto (2002)
Pro: Gusto is highly under-appreciated album, in my opinion. As a "punk" album, Gusto is terrible. As a "pop punk" album, Gusto is actually quite enjoyable.
Underneath the poppy exterior, this is some of the band's most lyrically humorous and musically diverse material.
How can you not laugh at the concept of the album cover?
Con: I think one of the major criticisms for this album is that Mark Adkins experiment with voice-tuning software while recording Gusto. So I can totally understand why he and others might look back at this album with a bit of shame. But this was a groundbreaking technology at the time, so I don't really blame them for trying it out either. This is also something that has become a standard practice in the industry these days, for better or worse.
I'm good with the experimentation just for one album.
Fav Songs: "Vacation" / "Pee In The Shower" / "Foot Long" / "My Girlfriend" / "My Town"

Did you know that frontman David Grohl originally wanted to put a therapist's couch on the cover of the band's second album? Or that the album was named because of an old bowling pin? What about the drummer who left the band due to creative differences with Grohl?" Stick around and we will answer these questions and more!
1. Drummer Drama
Original drummer William Goldsmith left the band due to creative differences with David Grohl.
The band originally record the album at in Washington state at Bear Creek Studio in November of 1996. However, in February of 1997 David Grohl decided to take the songs to Hollywood's Grandmaster Recorders to re-record most of the album with Grohl performing the drum parts.
In 2011, Grohl confessed to an interviewer backstage at Oxegen; "There were a lot of reasons it didn't work out... but there was also a part of me that was like... I don't know if I'm finished playing the drums yet... I wish that I would have handled things differently." - David Grohl, Oxegen 2011 - Foo Fighters David Grohl, RTE2fm (Jul 10, 2011)
2. Taylor Hawkins
Taylor Hawkins makes a cameo appearance.
Although Hawkins joined the band after Grohl had already recorded the drum tracks, the band were kind enough to let him appear in the music videos for the album's singles.
3. Thrift Store Inspiration
The album's title was inspired by a bowling pin purchased at a thrift shop.
The band's tour manager Gil Norton was known to rummage around at thrift stores and come back with odd knick-knacks and memorabilia. At one point he purchased a bowling pin with red and white stripes because he enjoyed "the colour and the shape" of it. The band found the phrase memorable and humorous enough to use it as an album title. Complete with the British spelling of "colour" with a "u" in homage to Norton who is British.
4. Ordinary Heroes
Grohl wrote "My Hero" as a tribute to ordinary everyday heroes.
"Heroes are a funny thing. When I was young I had KISS posters and I listened to Rush and thought the Beatles were magicians. But the real heroes in my life were people that I was close to. Pete Stahl who was the singer of Scream (Grohl's pre-Nirvana band) was one. I was 17 years old when we hit the road and that guy showed me the ropes, so to me he was a hero. And family members ...my mom's a saint. She raised two kids with no money and we managed to be a happy family, so she seems like a hero to me." - How To Write A Rock Anthem, Morat, Kerrang! (June 2006)
5. Monkey Wrench
The lyrics for "Monkey Wrench" were inspired by the dissolution of Grohl's four-year marriage to ex-wife Jennifer Youngblood.
"It was a riff that turned into another riff that turned into another riff and ended up being a nice little power punk song."
"'Monkey Wrench' is about living with someone and feeling like you're living in a fucking cell. A dysfunctional relationship that's bound to fail. And then I wound up getting a divorce ... "

In this video I teach Warlocks of all races how to find the dead acolyte and get the Rune of Demonic Tactics in World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery. The Dead Acolyte can be found in Tirisfal Glades near Scarlet Monestary for Horde characters or in Elwynn Forest near the Jasperlode Mine for Alliance. Watch the video for more details.
Nearly all background music used in my videos is my own. I started experimenting with ambient music production during the pandemic to help myself relax. It never turned in to a career but it was a fun hobby and gave me a nice catalog of background music to use in my videos. I still continue to produce music from time to time. FRED DURST (LIMP BIZKIT) RESURRECTS DEAD AUDIENCE | POP PUNK RADIO RANTS
I went to a taping of Pepsi Smash years ago with my sister who wanted to see Hoobastank. It was filmed at a studio in Hollywood. About 2,000 of us showed up to be in the audience for free as unpaid extras. We stood around outside of the building for two hours before going inside and standing around some more.
We eventually got to see about four different artists perform, however each artist only played two or three songs. We were not there to see a concert as many of us had assumed. No, this was a live video shoot. Which meant that each artist that we saw would play one of their radio singles, stop, and then play the same song again so that the cameras could record multiple takes.
We saw bands perform a song once, twice, thrice... sometimes up to five times in a row. Each time they did another take the producers would hype up the audience and try to get us to cheer even louder than the previous time.
Don't get me wrong, I like artists such as Counting Crows and Lenny Kravitz. It was cool to be able to them perform at such an event because they are not exactly artists that would cross my live-music radar otherwise. But there is only so much excitement I can muster for the fifth take of "Mr Jones" or "American Woman" when they weren't exactly who I came to see. Heck, even Hoobastank's "Crawling In The Dark" was less exciting the third and fourth time around.
Now I will give credit to Limp Bizkit for being one of the few bands to perform that day who genuinely got the crowd hyped up. People can talk crap on Fred Durst all they want. Maybe he deserves it, maybe he doesn't. I was really never a huge fan aside from owning their first album and jamming along with a few tracks on my bass as a teenager. So don't come to me for extensive knowledge about Fred Durst or Limp Bizkit. But that short little man came in to that building and gave a zombified crowd twenty CCs of adrenaline.
Seriously though, we were all pretty tired from standing around and being disappointed with the experience. When Limp Bizkit came on they basically acted like they were playing the opening song of a set. During the opening chords to hype up the crowd, Durst told everyone something along the lines of "Alright fuckers, we're gonna do this all in one take! Ready? Go!" and they blasted in to whatever song I can't remember. What I do remember was jumping around with the crowd as if we finally got a taste of the musical energy that we came to see. And I didn't even come to see Limp Bizkit.
Some bands are great studio bands. Other bands have to be seen live to be fully appreciated. I'm a big believer that Limp Bizkit were one of those bands that really shine on stage. At least, what I saw at Pepsi Smash was enough to make me semi-regret the fact that I never got to see them perform aside from that one experience.
So what does all of this have to do with Jimmy Eat World? Nothing. However, the audience in the crowd of this I Heart Radio live video gives me some serious Pepsi Smash vibes. They probably came to see Lil Doge or Cardi Gaga or whoever people think are cool these days.

SONG MEANING Deftones Change In The House Of Flies
Meaning of Change by Deftones
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... a fly? Many people have speculated upon the meaning of the Deftones hit song "Change (In The House Of Flies)."With lines such as "I watched a change in you" and "I pulled off your wings and I laughed" the overall feeling is that the song may describe a person who watches someone they once admired turn in to something much worse that they no longer recognize, all while feeling deep down that it was their own fault. Some fans have alluded the song to a feeling of incidentally watching a friend spiral downward through a drug-addiction while knowing that it was themselves who introduced the substance to the person in the first place. The song may also borrow imagery inspired by The Fly, a 1986 horror film starring Jeff Goldblum where a scientist fuses his DNA with that of a common housefly and gradually turns in to grotesque and ugly creature while all his girlfriend can do is watch helplessly as this man she once admired deteriorates far beyond either of their desires. Spoiler alert, but she's forced to help her boyfriend end his own life at the end of the film when both of them realize he has changed far too much and is suffering as a result. While Deftones singer Chino Moreno has never given a direct translation of the lyrics, he has offered this explanation for the song as a whole:“It’s a metaphorical song. You could take it in the literal sense of me watching someone turn into a fly and taking them home with me and pulling off their wings and laughing. It spawns from me being a complete asshole and getting the complete repercussion for it by having my life taken away.” - Moreno, A Deep Dive Into Deftones' Change..., Mike Rampton, Kerrang (May 25, 2019) - https://www.kerrang.com/a-deep-dive-into-deftones-change-in-the-house-of-flies-videoFor anyone else seeking a deeper knowledge or meaning of the song, bassist Chi Cheng offers this explanation:“Nobody knows what it’s about except for Chino,” - Chi Cheng, A Deep Dive Into Deftones' Change..., Mike Rampton, Kerrang (May 25, 2019) - https://www.kerrang.com/a-deep-dive-into-deftones-change-in-the-house-of-flies-video

Kurt Cobain's SURPRISE GIFT for Steve Albini
Have you ever loved an artist so much that you saved a treasured memento of theirs like a guitar pick, a set-list from a concert, or an autographed poster for years and years and years? Well, Kurt Cobain did, and he brought his treasured memento to the studio one day to share with In Utero producer Steve Albini. As Steve explains:"When my band Big Black did a farewell tour years before the In Utero sessions, the final show was in some industrial space in Seattle... It was in a weird building with a makeshift stage. It was a cool gig and at end we smashed up all of our gear. I distinctively recall some kid asking me if he could take a piece of my guitar off the stage and me saying ‘go ahead its garbage now.’“Many years later when we were working on In Utero at the studio in Minnesota, Kurt showed me this little piece of this guitar that he had saved. He had brought it with him after all those years. He had been that kid.” - Albini, Steve Albini Discusses Working With Nirvana..., Sam Armstrong, Udiscovermusic (May 25, 2023)

Corey Taylor & Rick Rubin FUED
Although producer Rick Rubin is an accomplished producer with many notable hit albums on his resume, Slipknot singer Corey Taylor was less than impressed by the producer's methods. As he told Revolver Magazine in 2008:
"I wouldn't know what it's like to work with Rick Rubin. I only saw him about four times. Rick Rubin is a nice man. He's done a lot of good for a lot of people. He didn't do anything for me. I'm not happy with the vocals on that record. There were a lot of takes that I thought were much better than the ones they f****** used and I wasn't asked about a lot of s***. It sounds amazing; the songs are great. But we were being charged horrendous amounts of money." - Taylor, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)
He was also noted as saying in a different interview:
“Rick Rubin shows up for 45 minutes a week... I respect what Rick Rubin has done. But the Rick Rubin of today is a thin shadow of the Rick Rubin that he was. He is overrated, he is overpaid, and I will never work with him again as long as I f****** live.” - Taylor, I Want To Say Sorry To Rick Rubin, Martin Kielty, Metal Hammer (Sept 21, 2022)

Nirvana and producer Steve Albini wanted to record In Utero in a place where they wouldn't be surrounded by screaming fans trying to intrude on their workspace or be tempted by nearby "shenanigans." Even going so far as to book the studio under a fake name to avoid anybody leaking the news that a major rock band was going to be recording their next album in the area.“It was far enough away from anybody that the band knew socially, and we wouldn’t have a f****** TV crew out front every day or any drug dealers trying to do business... We had to make sure that word didn’t get out... I booked the studio on my account under the pseudonym the ‘Simon Ritchie Band,’ which was of course Sid Vicious’ real name...Until the flight cases started arriving... nobody knew. The cases had Nirvana spray-painted on the side of them, but until that happened, even the people who owned the studio didn’t know that Nirvana was going to be recording there.” - Albini, Steve Albini Discusses Working With Nirvana..., Sam Armstrong, Udiscovermusic (May 25, 2023)

Deftones & DJ Shadow REMIX White Pony | Black Stallion
Deftones released a White Pony remix album titled Black Stallion, inviting various artists to provide electronic remixes of songs from White Pony. They even approached DJ Shadow to produce the album because they were fans of his work. However, DJ Shadow was unfamiliar with the Deftones and may have mistakenly confused them with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones when he was approached for the collaboration.
As Chino explained to an interviewer with The Quietus:
"Black Stallion is something that we had an idea for about 20 years ago when we were making White Pony. At the time we were heavily influenced by a lot of electronic breakbeat type of music. DJ Shadow and UNKLE had made some of our favourite records at that time. So we approached him before the White Pony album was even recorded. We asked him if he would be interested in remixing our record for us but he didn’t know us, he thought we were ska: “The Deftones? Are you guys a ska band?”...
The coolest thing for me was finding out a lot of the guests were already familiar with our music which I didn’t know. You kind of get people’s real interpretations and they use the parts of the songs that they most connect to and that’s cool. Sometimes it can be a chorus or a verse or a drumbeat or a whisper, they choose that bit to focus in on and to us, the creators of the music, it’s super interesting to hear that interpretation. It’s kind of a self-indulgent project but it turned out really well."- Moreno, What's In A Name?, John Doran, The Quietus (Sep 29, 2020) - https://thequietus.com/articles/28998-deftones-chino-interview

Alice In Chains MOCKUMENTARY The Nona Tapes
Alice In Chains released a mockumentary in 1995 to help promote their self-titled album. The false documentary titled The Nona Tapes stars guitarist Jerry Cantrell posing as journalist Nona Weisbrum as she hunts the Seattle streets in search of members of Alice In Chains to interview.
Studio executives at Columbia were initially upset with the band for taking their money intended for an Electronic Press Kit and using it to create The Nona Tapes but later warmed up to the idea when the VHS developed a cult following. A DVD would later be included with the 2006 compilation album The Essential Alice In Chains.

NO ROYALTIES for Steve Albini In Utero
Nirvana Steve Albini Took 0% Royalties For Working On In Utero
Producer Steve Albini refused to take a percentage of the album royalties, electing to work only for a flat fee. Ok, so that fee was $100,000 dollars which is no small amount to an average person. But considering that the album would go on to sell well over 15 million copies, $100k is chump change compared to what he could have collected with even a mere 1% cut. Albini felt that it would be unethical to demand a percentage of royalties from the band, especially considering that Nirvana intended to produce a "minimalistic" album with very little input from anyone who wasn't named Kurt, David, or Krist. Even going so far as to say “I think paying a royalty to a producer or engineer is ethically indefensible” in a four page proposal he sent to the band when requesting to work on the album. As the producer himself explains:“All of the people that were carping at the band from the outside about what a mistake they’d made with this record, that pretty accurately represented what they wanted to do with their music… all of those people [are] parasites... They weren’t involved in making the record. They want, somehow or another, to claim authorship of the creative output of these other people who are actually doing the heavy lifting for their career. I can’t have any respect for somebody like that, who’s not involved in the creative process but then decides that they wanna snipe at it from the outside and manipulate people into doing things to suit them. F*** every one of those people.” - Albini, Read Steve Albini's Four page Proposal..., Kyle McGovern, Spin (Sep 26, 2013)

Maynard James Keenan HELPS Deftones
Passenger Deftones Maynard James Keenan
Maynard James Keenan, which you might recognize as the front-man of the popular industrial metal band Tool, had been hanging out with Deftones singer Chino Moreno and was invited to work on White Pony as an executive producer. The band were interested in bringing in a fresh perspective to help them navigate some difficulties they were having while writing the album. Rather than come in and take over the project with his years of musical experience and expertise, Maynard instead played a role more similar to that of a spiritual mentor. Bringing bottles of champagne and Tibetan Singing Bowls to the studio to shake things up. He also made the band perform using different instruments in an attempt to stir their creativity and break them out of their respective ruts."I was told the guys were having a bit of writer's block or some turmoil within the band. Who knows? They certainly weren't going to discuss that with me, an almost total stranger... very strong-willed gents. Dare I say stubborn... Up to that point, they seemed to have been able to navigate through their differences in ideas and approaches. Great first efforts. The evidence is all there. I felt like they just needed a bit of new perspective.I had them each switch instruments, play on the bowls, take one loop and try some improvisation... The look on their faces was priceless. I might as well have been wearing hippie beads and bunny ears. I could just feel Stephen thinking, 'What kind of acid-trip crap is this?'""I stuck around long enough for them to start itching to not have me around... Eventually, it was time for me to let them be. The result of my interruption was for them to unconsciously remember or feel what connected them in the first place. By the time I saw them again, they had opened their own creative floodgates." - Keenan, Inside Deftones Game-Changing Alt-Metal Masterpiece, Steve Appleford, Revolver (Nov 23, 2020) - https://www.revolvermag.com/music/white-pony-inside-deftones-game-changing-alt-metal-masterpiece

BRINGING #EMO TO THE CLUB: SLIGHTLY MYSTERIOUS, SOMEWHAT DELIRIOUS by DACIAN MIRON | POP ALTERNATIVE
For Fans Of: My Chemical Romance, AFI, All Time Low, Panic! at the Disco, First and Forever, Waterparks
Review: Fans of 2000's era emo can breathe a sigh of relief as Dacian Miron gives the genre a modern update with his new EP Slightly Mysterious, Somewhat Delirious. The former singer/songwriter of post-hardcore act The August Name has set off on a solo career that allows him to explore some of his pop influences such as Journey, Queen, and Michael Jackson.
A Florida native since the year 2000, Dacian's blend of pop-alternative brings emo to the club scene. "Bad decisions are my true religion" as Dacian sings in "The Cure for Sobriety is a Bottle of Jack," a track that would fit in any playlist right alongside some of Fall Out Boy's biggest hits, while "Nightcrawler's Revenge" has a modern dark-wave feel that fans of newer AFI might enjoy.
Each of the album's five tracks could stand out as a single in it's own right, but songs like "Young Punk, Mr. Rock N Roll" and "Feeling Dangerous" could easily chart on any mainstream modern rock radio station if they weren't all turning in to mindless automated Top 40 by now. Not that Dacian's music doesn't belong on Top 40 either, it totally does! But to call an artist "Top 40" in the underground scene tends to come as a back-handed compliment. We would love to hear more music like this on mainstream airwaves.
Dacian is already an accomplished musician, but if this is just his debut as a solo artist then we think he's going to need a steady collection of sunglasses for the bright future that he has ahead of him. "Just stand by for a damn good time" because Slightly Mysterious, Somewhat Delirious will leave you "feeling just fine / on cloud nine."
Rating: 4/5 - A solid debut EP with stellar production value. A promising glimpse of things to come from up-and-coming artist Dacian Miron.

RIGHT WING HIPPIE RUSSELL BRAND | IS CANCEL CULTURE COMING FOR RUSSELL BRAND? | POP PUNK RADIO RANTS
Russel Brand does a lot of virtue signaling but sometimes I agree with him. His recent criticism of censorship and big tech has led him to be targeted by some who would call him "right wing." This is a commentary on Russell Brand's recent video where he discusses why he is being called "right wing."

The music video for "Got The Life" was requested and played on Total Request Live so often that MTV decided to "retire" the music video in order to give other artists an opportunity.
The song actually never reached the number 1 spot on the top 10 countdown due to stiff competition from Britney Spears and N'Sync, however the video held a position at number 3 for so long that host Carson Daly jokingly refered to the number 3 position as "The Korn Spot."
