REDEMPTION & NEW BEGINNINGS: WINONA AVENUE ALBUM REVIEW | CHRISTIAN ROCK POP PUNK
For Fans Of: Taking Back Sunday, Amber Pacific, Reliant K, MxPx
Review: A famous movie narrator / inmate at Shawshank Penitentiary once said; "Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane." A fork in the road can be a tough decision, does one continue down a path that is clearly visible but has also not been working out? Or do we walk the unknown road of uncertainty with no guarantee that it will lead somewhere more suitable?
"I didn't believe it was right for me / I was so afraid that everything would fall away," sings Daniel Deputy, who forms the Winona Avenue duo with his brother David. The following is pulled directly from the band's press release;
"Winona Avenue can be thought of as a route that is traveled throughout a lifetime. “The decisions you make, the way in which you deal with circumstances, and who you choose to follow can determine where you will go,” says David. The band further explains that the band name can be a reminder that there is always hope for a new beginning. “Even if you feel like you are at the end of the road, or that you have nowhere left to turn, we believe in the opportunity to start over and begin again,” says Daniel."
"I thought I knew it all... knew everything / But now I've come to realize I was lost in the melody,"sings Daniel on "Future Me," a song about reminiscing on one's past decisions. But rather than regretting the choices one has made we actually find ourselves in a much better situation where we are able to look back and laugh at our past trepidation. "When I trusted the unseen, it was clear to me." Sometimes all a person can do is put their faith in a higher power and hope that things will fall in place along the way.
Themes of discovery, redemption and new beginnings carry throughout the album's 12 tracks and nearly 40 minutes of length. "I'm breaking out of this repetitive dream" is the message on one of the album's multiple singles "Dancing In The Pouring Rain." If you haven't caught on by now, Winona Avenue is a Christian rock album, but it is also an album that could appeal to those who might not normally consider themselves as the traditionally religious type because the messages don't necessarily beat you over the head or pass judgement upon you for not "believing." The songwriters merely offer their own Prodigal-type stories as an example that venturing out into the cold, gray fog doesn't always have to lead to a place like Silent Hill. A message that can be true for anyone and everyone.
"Hope is a good thing, and maybe the best of things / Hope can set you free." - Andy Duphrense; The Shawshank Redemption
Rating: 8.5/10 - A solid pop-rock album with intelligent lyrics and positive messages of redemption and new beginnings.

EPISODE 36 - STAY STRONG PLAYLIST #2 (ABUSE) | POP PUNK RADIO SHOW (PPRS-0036)
Episode 36 is a Stay Strong playlist. Music has the power to help people through hard times. I hope that the music can help others in the same way that it has helped myself.
This particular Stay Strong playlist has a sub-theme of Abuse. More accurately, growing up in an abusive household. Regardless if it was your father, a step-father, your mother, a sibling, an uncle or aunt, a cousin, a guardian, or someone else.
Popular culture spends a lot of time targeting fathers who are abusive, and rightfully so. There are indeed a lot of men out there who abuse their family. However, abuse is not exclusive to one gender. Women can be quite abusive in their own way, which isn't always physical but sometimes it is.
One of the things that really pisses me off is the fact that men are overwhelmingly blamed for domestic violence issues. There are indeed a lot of men out there who commit acts of domestic violence, nobody is denying that. But there are also a lot of women out there abusing their families as well but society never seems to want to talk about that. How are we ever supposed to be "equal" in this world when one gender gets a free pass and another gender never gets the benefit of doubt?
I once had a counselor who overwhelmingly wanted to speak about "Toxic Masculinity." He would often use the phrase "We need to move from a place of "Toxic Masculinity" to place of "Healing Femininity."" I immediately took issue with his choice of words, explaining that by putting those combination of words together he was implying that all men are bad and all women are good. Which simply is not true. One need look no further than a quick YouTube search for "Big Red" for a good example of so-called "Healing Femininity" personified.
I can't help anyone solve their problems. All I know how to do is write about my own experiences. All I can do is let you know that you are absolutely not alone. All I can do is tell my story and hope that it provides some answers while giving others insights that I never had growing up. All I can do is share the music that helps me through my own hard times. I hope they can assist you too in some small way.
Bands and artists in this playlist include:
The Unseen, Millencolin, Thrice, Fiddler's Green, Ten Foot Pole, The Vandals, Hopsin, No Use For A Name, Three Days Grace, I Prevail, Against Me!, Forever Came Calling
Features and discussions include:
-"Saved By Hell" is possibly my all-time favorite song from Millencolin.Years ago I posted a photo of my Machine 15 vinyl on social media and said it was my favorite Millencolin album. An old buddy from high school replied saying "Really? That one is your favorite." Yes, Dickard... I mean Richard, it is. I enjoy most of the songs on the album but the lyrics of "Saved By Hell" spoke directly to my soul. I watched my mom abuse my older sister on a near nightly basis for a period of two to three years when I was in middle school. The lyrics "why can't you get along?" and "in a small apartment, there's nowhere to run when chaos has begun" really hit home for me, no pun intended.
-"Your House" by Hopsin is the only hip-hop song on the playlist. I'm not a huge fan of rap or hip-hop but I am a fan of good music with a powerful message. When I was in middle school witnessing my mother and sister going to war with each other on a regular basis, I once asked a buddy if I could stay at his house overnight even though we both had school the next day. My buddy who was Turkish and lived with his single mom in an apartment replied "Why? Isn't your house all white and Brady Bunch?" I wanted to smack this dude across his ignorant face. Instead, I just mumbled something about dysfunctional family shows like Roseanne and Married With Children being popular for a reason. Just because I was white and my parents stayed married didn't mean we were living the life of a fictional 60s/70s era sitcom. Not. At. All.
-On a more positive note, I saw Against Me! perform a few years ago. I didn't know the words to a lot of their songs but I knew all of the lyrics to one song in particular, "Black Me Out." When the song came up in the set-list, I sang along at the top of my voice and pulled out my phone to record the moment. While I was singing along with Laura Jane Grace, a cute blonde girl nearby put her arm around my shoulder and kissed me on the cheek. A pleasant surprise, no doubt. I turned the phone around and she did it one more time for the camera. I had a huge smile on my face until I looked over and saw who I assume was her boyfriend, glaring at both of us and not looking very happy. It was a pleasant moment but I was smart enough to stay out of that messy situation. What's the point of this story? Well, I just wanted to lighten the mood but perhaps there is something to be said about losing one's-self in the moment? Or maybe it was just a pleasant moment of shared camaraderie, and nothing more. 🤷

Meaning of Everlong by Foo Fighters
Lyrics to "Everlong" were inspired by Grohl's romance with Louise Post of Veruca Salt.
"That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly" - Grohl, Dave Grohl's Guide To Every Song, FooArchive (Nov 24, 2011)

Blink 182 Untitled Album SPEAKS For ITSELF
The album is not Self-Titled.
"It's kind of like if you have a painting that you've painted and you just can't think of a name for it. That's how we felt about our record. We felt like we couldn't think of a name to justify what just happened on that record. You know?" - Barker; interviews, Bobby Gorman, ThePunkSite (Dec 10, 2003)
"We didn’t want to label it with anything. We didn’t want to label it with a joke title that people might expect. We didn’t want to label it with some serious phrase that the whole record would have to somehow relate to. We left it untitled, so it would speak for itself.”- Tom Delonge; This is Blink 182: Untitled, Garret Michael Carlson, Dudefluencer, Sep 13, 2019

How Slipknot Sid Wilson Battles Depression
Slipknot's Vol 3 (The Subliminal Verses) didn't start out with a very productive recording process, and almost didn't happen because the band was too busy drinking and was not getting any work done, as various members of the band recount their own stories:
(Drummer) JOEY JORDISON told Revolver Magazine in 2008:
"Me and Paul demoed a bunch of songs. I flew down to Los Angeles and arrived expecting to practice. I walk in and Corey says, "No, I'm going to the Rainbow [Bar & Grill, the famous L.A. rock-and-roll hangout]." And Shawn says, "No, I'm working on something else." I'm like, "What the f***?! We're not f****** jamming?" So I go get a bottle of Jack Daniel's and drink myself into oblivion. Then I wake up at 3 o'clock the next day and say, "Right, let's jam," and no one wants to. It took us three f****** months before everyone came together." - Jordinson, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)
Vocalist COREY TAYLOR would say:
"For the most part, I pushed everybody away. I would drink all day and then go to the bar at night. I was the quintessential lead singer. You were gonna cater to my ego and tell me everything was great. And that's so not who I am. Honestly. I never wanted to be like that. I would keep a bottle of Jack next to my f****** bed every day. Instead of figuring out why I was upset, I just drowned in it... I just wanted to feel something other than terrible." - Taylor, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)
And turntablist SID WILSON would explain:
"Like some of the other guys, I went through some relationship problems and started drinking and smoking reefer really heavily, nonstop all day to deal with the depression. I'd stay up for three days straight. Then I'd pass out for a day and continue the cycle until I realized a year later that there's a lot worse things than being on the pity pot. I started playing piano and that was a good release for me—getting rid of the depression through the keys." - Wilson, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)

Meaning of Monkey Wrench by Foo FIghters
The lyrics for "Monkey Wrench" were inspired by the dissolution of Grohl's four-year marriage to ex-wife Jennifer Youngblood.
"It was a riff that turned into another riff that turned into another riff and ended up being a nice little power punk song." - Grohl, Dave Grohl's Guide To Every Song, FooArchive (Nov 24, 2011)
"'Monkey Wrench' is about living with someone and feeling like you're living in a fucking cell. A dysfunctional relationship that's bound to fail. And then I wound up getting a divorce ... " - Grohl, How To Write A Rock Anthem, Morat, Kerrang! (June 2006)

Recently skimmed over Paramore's new album This Is Why which was released today.
1. This Is Why
The first single comes across as a basement dweller's anthem. Hayley Williams complains that other people should keep their opinions to themselves and talks about why she never wants to leave the house. How ironic.
2. News
The chorus rocks but the verse repeats itself constantly in the same vein as Green Day's "Know Your Enemy." Unlike the opening track, I enjoy the lyrical content.
3. Running Out Of Time
I thought this was going to be a pop/punk or emo album. I was clearly wrong. That being said, I do enjoy the song more-so than the previous two.
4. C'est Comme Ca
Have you ever noticed that sometimes the songs that are immediatly catchy tend to become annoying after a while and sometimes the songs that initially miss their mark on first listen can grow on us? This song feels like the prior. Very catchy, I do enjoy it. But I can see myself skipping this type of song on future listens.
5. Big Man, Little Dignity
I really enjoy the music. I mean I really enjoy it. Too bad the lyrics are filled with misandry. Scorned modern day toxic-feminists will probably eat it up though.
6. You First
Keep this song in mind when the lyrics ironically backfire... wishing bad karma on others is just bad karma for ourselves. Another song toxic modern-day feminists will eat up. So at least Hayley has chosen an audience and is going for it.
7. Figure 8
Weak rhymes. Lyrical content that seems to play the victim and point fingers while ignoring any personal accountability.
8. Liar
Hayley's voice sounds amazing. The sound is a departure from what fans of Riot! are familiar with but if you can get past that, it's actually a very enjoyable song. The lyrics are vulnerable and take self-accountability. This is the best song on the album, in my own humble opinion.
9. Crave
Another beautiful pop-rock song. This feels like a song that could stand the test of time.
10. Thick Skull
A somber tune with a touch of psychedelic guitar. Not bad.
Overall Take:
This is NOT a pop-punk or emo album. Paramore are clearly a pop-rock band now. Perhaps they've been one for a while. I honestly haven't kept up with them aside from their first album. Hayley intentionally refused to become a Top 40 artist when writing music for their breakthrough album Riot! However, it seems as if she very quickly went against her original ideals. Nothing wrong with that by the way, just a bit different from what I was expecting.
Not sure who shit in Hayley's cheerios during the pandemic but she sure seems to be taking a lot of anger out on men with this album. Take it out on the scumbag politicians, Hayley. Not on the guys who supported your music early on...
Hayley has clearly become a vehement feminist, for better and worse. While one can certainly understand why she might feel the way she feels, it doesn't mean that I have to buy in to it either. But this doesn't feel like an album that was made for a person like myself, and that's ok.
There are two songs on the album that I really enjoy (Lira & Crave) and can see myself putting them in to a playlist but overall I won't be returning to this album.

With lyrics that read, "'Cause you're my girl. And that's alright. If you sting me, I won't mind." Some have speculated whether the Deftones song "Rx Queen" is about an individual with a serious illness who requires lots of medication and that the narrator of the song has fallen in love with, or if it describes the addictive nature of a toxic relationship. No explanation has ever been officially offered but singer Chino Moreno has allegedly stated that the song is about his wife. What we can confirm, is that the late and legendary former front man of Stone Temple pilots, Scott Weiland, makes an uncredited cameo appearance. Adding some improvized vocal harmonies to the chorus. As vocalist Chino Moreno explains:“The way it happened was pretty organic... I met up with him at a studio in Burbank and I was playing him some of the rough music and he pulled out a microphone and started doing his Scott Weiland scatting stuff over it. Then he started kind of harmonizing with me on the chorus, singing this lower register melody...I was like, ‘Wow, that sounds pretty cool,’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, you can re-sing it if you want..." But then we mixed the record, I said, ‘His voice sounds kind of good on there...’ If you listen hard enough, you can totally hear his timbre and the way that he sings. I mean, it’s totally him. But it was kind of cool the way that it happened where it wasn’t anything that we promoted. It was kind of a little Easter egg in a way.” - Moreno, Scott Weiland Made An Uncredited Cameo Appearance, Chad Childers, Loudwire (Sep 22, 2020) - https://loudwire.com/scott-weiland-uncredited-cameo-deftones-white-pony-album/

SONG MEANINGS Nirvana Scentless Apprentice
What Does Scentless Apprentice Mean?
What Is Scentless Apprentice?
Have you ever met a man who had no scent? Well, meet Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, the main character of Patrick Suskind's Purfume. A novel that Kurt Cobain enjoyed so much that he wrote a song about it. The book centers on a strange figure, an odorless man who serves as a perfumer's assistant and has a sadistic hobby of killing virgins in order to steal their scent.
Hence the lyrics:
"His smell smelled like no other
He was born scentless and senseless
He was born a scentless apprentice"

Original Lyrics for Chop Suey
Chop Suey Alternate Lyrics
"Chop Suey" was originally written with a different set of opening lyrics written by guitarist Daron Malakian, who intended to write a serious song about drug abuse. However, Serj Tankian would improvise a new set of opening lyrics which have since become iconic.
The original lyrics read:
“Tell me/Tell me what you think about tomorrow/Is there gonna be a pain and sorrow/Tell me what you think about the people/Is there gonna be another sequel?"
Which became the nonsensical lines we are more familiar with: “Wake up/Grab a brush and put a little make-up.” ...and you know the rest.
Serj would also improvise the lyrics "father unto thy hands I commend my spirit" when he grabbed a random book in Rick Rubin's studio and flipped to a random page for inspiration during a bout of writer's block. That book was the Bible.
As for the meaning of the song, Daron would explain:
“It occurred to me how we are judgemental towards people, even in death... If someone died in a car accident, you'd say, 'Oh, poor thing.' But if they died in a car accident while they were drunk, that would change your whole perception of how they died, and judging his or her death a in a different way. For some reason, that thought was weird to me. I was probably smoking weed or something…” - Malakian, 10 Things You Didn't Know About Chop Suey, Dave Everley, Metal Hammer (Mar 6, 2021)

Music video director Spike Jonze was chosen to work on "The Sweater Song" because he was one of the only directors who approached Weezer with a pitch that did not have anything to do with an actual sweater.
Instead, the director pitched a simple concept. Weezer in a blue room with a steadicam and a pack of dogs. The video would be filmed in one continuous shot which took over 25 takes. The take that was used was somewhere between number 15 and 20. The humor displayed by the band in the video was a byproduct of the band's frustration with doing so many takes. At one point, one of the dogs even left a "present" on Patrick Wilson's bass drum pedal.
"We couldn’t get the dogs to do what we wanted them to do. I mean it was a big room with loud music blaring so it was hard to get them to hit their marks, and you had like 15 different trainers trying to tell their dog which way to go. At one point one of the dogs came over and crapped on Pat’s drum pedal. At that point we realized this was ridiculous and we should just let everyone do whatever the fuck they wanted, dogs included, and it will be fun." - Karl Koch, UNDONE: The Complete Oral History Of Weezer, Phawker, Dec 11, 2018

Why James Hetfield Went To REHAB

Metallica began working on St Anger in April 2001. However, production would get delayed when James Hetfield checked himself in to rehab to address his addiction to alcohol.
Known for their willingness to indulge while on tour, guitarist Kirk Hammett described what it was like when he joined the band:
"When I first met these guys, they were drinking vodka like it was water. I would start drinking about twelve in the afternoon, we would arrive at the club and go straight to the bar and see how much booze we could consume for free, and by the time we went out onstage we were almost always sauced.
It became part of our legend. People would know when we were coming into town to stock their bars and make sure there was always a lot of booze for us to drink." - Hammett, Metallica's James Hetfield Expounds On Addiction..., Conor Bezane, The Bipolar Addict (Mar 10, 2015)
As the years went on, members of the band matured, and many of them gradually toned down their drinking and partying. Not James, however.
Following the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, who left the band in no small part due to creative differences with Hetfield, James began to reflect on his own abusive behavior. As James has often admit that he was quite controlling of the band and often "suffocated" many of Jason's ideas out of fear of surrendering any semblence of control of this monstrous behemoth that had become Metallica.
Was Jason Newsted's departure the straw that broke the Hetfield's back and forced him to dive deep within himself to address the inner-demons that caused him to drive a beloved band member away? Perhaps. I mean, I'm sure that it was a piece of the complex puzzle that makes up a person like James Hetfield.
As drummer Lars Ulrich confessed:
“Jason is the only member of Metallica who has ever left willingly... That in itself is a statistic. And the resentment from James and I was just so…You can’t do that. You can only leave if we want you to leave. And then we weren’t equipped at the time to do a deep dive into why he was leaving...
You can see 20 years later, it makes complete sense. We write the songs. We make the decisions. We do all of it. You have no creative outlet in this band. You have no creative voice. Then when you go and do something that gives you satisfaction in a way for you to express yourself to the rest of the world, then we get p***ed at you. Then that resentment then goes to you leaving the band.” - Ulrich, Metallica: 40th Anniversary Special..., Zane Lowe, Apple Music (Oct 6, 2021)
James Hetfield himself has also explained that the initial writing sessions without Jason Newsted in the band were not as fruitful as they had been in years prior. After a few motnhs of working on the album and not going anywhere, James Hetfield made the tough decision to check himself in to treatment. He would return to the studio in May 2002.
Following what would be the first of many trips to rehab, James Hetfield had this to say:
"Recovery is the most difficult and challenging thing I've ever attempted (along with parenting)... [It's] also the most grounding and gratifying gift I've ever received (along with parenting)...
My music and lyrics have always been a therapy for me... Without this God-given gift, I don't know where I'd be. Now I truly feel the impact and connection [they have] made with others. Struggle to struggle. Pain to pain. Human to human, not idol to fan, fan to idol. Clarity has put me in a humble and serene place to receive this connection in return and feel it helping heal me...
Every breath I take becomes deeper, and [I become] more confident of myself without my crutches. The lies I've filled my body and soul with aren't needed anymore. They're not welcome. I choose to live, not just exist." - Hetfield, Metallica's James Hetfield Calls Rehab Challenging, Gratifying, Jon Weiderhorn, MTV (Feb 21, 2002)

Alice In Chains Didn't Want to DIE IN PUBLIC
Alice In Chains' 1995 self titled album is the first full length album to feature Mike Inez on bass guitar, who previously performed with Ozzy Osbourne. The album would also be the last studio album to include vocalist Layne Staley as the band would fall in to an extended hiatus not long after the album's release, which was speculated to have been caused by vocalist Layne Staley's addiction to drugs. However, drummer Sean Kinney would later tell DRUM! Magazine that Staley wasn't the only reason that the band withdrew from the limelight following the release of their third album.
“He (Staley) was the focal point, like singers are... So they’d single him out. But the truth was, it was pretty much everybody. I definitely had my hand firmly on the wheel going off the cliff. And the reason we pulled back – you know when you stop when you have two #1 records, it’s not really the greatest career move – but we did that because we love each other and we didn’t want to die in public. And I know for a fact in my heart that if we were to continue that I wouldn’t be on the phone right now talking to you. I wouldn’t have made it. I just wouldn’t have.” - Kinney, Sean Kinney: From The Ashes, Drum Magazine (Jul 19, 2011)

POP PUNK RADIO SHOW: EPISODE 27 - AFTER DARK PLAYLIST #1 (PPRS-0027)
SUBSCRIBE TO THE POP PUNK RADIO YOUTUBE CHANNEL TO HELP US GROW
Episode 27 is an After Dark playlist, a collection of club-style tunes to set the mood for good night out or a fun night in. These playlists also give me an opportunity to curate a collection of songs featuring some of my own favorite artists, rather than trying to focus on highlighting up-and-coming artists.
Bands and artists in this playlist include:
Modern Error, Highly Suspect, William Control, Thrice, Ima Robot, Simple Creatures, Dacian Miron, Machine Gun Kelly, She Wants Revenge, Deftones, TV On The Radio, Local H, HIM, Neon Trees, Foo Fighters, Bloodhound Gang, Blink 182, The Network, As You Wish Ambient
Features and discussions include:
-Dacian Miron is one of the perfect artists for this playlist, with a blend of emo rock that is perfect for a club environment. Check out his video for "Feelin' Dangerous" and then watch our review video for his album Slightly Mysterious, Somewhat Delirious!
-The self-titled album by She Wants Revenge is one of my favorite albums. One that I can listen to from start to finish. Their song "Tear You Apart" was huge on mainstream radio airwaves back in the mid 00s, however I have noticed a lot of people from the younger generations are unaware of this masterpiece. For shame!
-"Sextape" by The Deftones is an easy nominee for sexiest rock song ever! At least in my book, it is.
-Who did it better? TV On The Radio or Local H? Judge for yourself as the latter cover one of the former's biggest hits, "Wolf Like Me."
-If you like electronic music, check out As You Wish Ambient! This is my electronic music project that I have been developing. I recently released the Aurora Moon EP, which is a small collection of relaxing ambient tunes. However, I'm also aiming to release a full length album of progressive house tunes this Spring or early Summer. Check out the visualizer video for "Transcendo" in this week's playlist. "If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button for you so you could get in, dump her."
The Door Test comes from a scene in the 1993 film called The Bronx Tale. Ataris fans might recognize this movie clip as used in the song "Your Boyfriend Sucks." But maybe it isn't the boyfriend who sucks, what if it's the girlfriend?
The idea is that when you pick up your date and let her into the car, take special care to notice if she reaches over and unlocks your side of the door for you as you walk around the car to get in. "If she doesn't reach over and lift up that button for you so you could get in, that means she's a selfish broad and all you're seeing is the tip of the iceberg. You dump her and you dump her fast."
Reciprocity must come from both sides. Otherwise, what are you doing to yourself? Now The Bronx Tale is almost 30 years old, so it's possible that this situation won't play out exactly like this in an era of Ride Sharing and Social Media, but the message remains the same. Don't invest your time and energy on someone who only thinks about herself.
If you are the only one initiating conversation (especially through text), stop. Find someone who will reciprocate. You will be much happier.
Maybe one of the pop punk ladies from the next generation should cover this song and swap the genders; "Your Girlfriend Sucks."
