Applied Iridology in Clinical Practice | Webinar Jan 22 2020
On Wednesday January 22 2020 at 7:00 PM EST IHN held a 1-hour webinar, with Robert Tomilson, as he uncovered iris markings indicating various gastrointestinal disorders, blood sugar imbalance and inflammatory conditions in the body, taken from the Applied Iridology Continuing Education course content. Studies have shown that 65% of all the nerves in the brain are connected to the eyes by way of the optic nerve, optic thalami and spinal cord. The iris consists of tiny nerve fibres, known as trabecula, that reveal the body’s constitution, inherent weakness, level of health and the transitions. Changes in the body’s physiology can be seen in the iris several years before disease can be detected medically.

Label Lessons: Identifying Authentic Vs. Fake Olive Oil
Hosted by Angelo Tramonti Certified Olive Oil Taster | Founder of Sarafino
Olive oil has been a staple in Mediterranean culture for over 2,000 years and is beloved by foodies and health practitioners alike. The health benefits of olive oil are unrivalled; however, not all olive oils are created equal. Many products you find on the shelves of your local grocery store are not the pure, nourishing, wonderful product we expect it to be. Some labels do not adequately reflect what is inside the bottle—sometimes it's not extra virgin, sometimes it is mixed with other oils and sometimes it's not even made from olives!
Join Angelo Tramonti, Certified Olive Oil Taster certified in Calabria, Italy by Panel Leader Dr. Rosario Franco, for a discussion on the truth about olive oil. In this talk you will learn the different grades of olive oil and the chemical and olfactory processes that differentiates them, how fraudulence in the industry affects the quality and health benefits of the products you use, the truth about 'First Cold Pressed' and which olive oils you can confidently use yourself and recommend to clients.
Highlights of this talk include:
- The hidden truths of the olive oil industry
- Differences between grades of olive oil
- How to ensure the quality and authenticity of olive oil
- Traditional methods vs. current industry practices
Angelo has a passion for food and sustainability. Growing up, he remembers planting seeds and picking weeds in the family garden instead of playing sports with his friends. This is something he now appreciates, as gardening, as well as meditating, practicing Qi Gong, gazing at the stars and attending weekly acupuncture sessions have become a part of his holistic lifestyle. He strongly believes that if you do what you love and love what you do, you will never work a day in your life! Angelo is the founder of Sarafino—a company he began in 2000 from a need to make real food more accessible to the general public, while increasing the value of real olive oil. It felt right promoting the traditional and ancient farming methods his family in Italy were so passionate about and it just grew from there. Angelo strives to promote and protect these practices and those of artisanal food production. His goal is to help bring balance back into human lives, which in turn will bring balance to the Earth. He believes we must first heal ourselves before we can heal the planet.

Upgrading the Gut-Brain Interaction Using Vagus Nerve Activation
Hosted by Dr. Navaz Habib DC, AMFCP | Founder of Health Upgraded
The gut-brain axis is the path through which our brains and bodies interact directly with our gut microbiome. We know the importance and effects of the microbiome, but how exactly does it interact with our brain and affect our health. The vagus nerve is a commonly overlooked piece of the health puzzle and is involved in a wide array of processes in our body including digestion, immune cell regulation, inflammatory control and parasympathetic signalling to most of our organs. In 2016 Dr. Navaz Habib wrote the article, 19 Ways to Activate your Vagus Nerve which lead to a publisher’s contacting him to produce a complete book on the subject. He has become an expert on bio-hacking the vagus nerve for a number of profound physical and mental effects. The talk will be a dive into the importance of the vagus nerve in optimal health, the gut-brain axis, common factors leading to poor vagus nerve function and specific ways to help heal and improve vagus nerve function to upgrade health.
In this talk you will learn:
- The role of the vagus nerve in our overall health
- The importance of vagus nerve in the Gut-Brain Axis
- The most effective practices (bio-hacks!) to recommend to clients
- How a properly functioning vagus nerve controls inflammation
- The habits and factors that lead to poor vagus nerve health and function
- How to accurately test vagus nerve function
Dr. Habib is the founder of Health Upgraded a Functional Medicine and Health Optimization clinic in Toronto, working with high performing professionals, athletes and entrepreneurs to dig a little deeper and find the answers to what is holding back their health. He works with those who want to take their health to a higher level, allowing them to contribute to humanity and serve more people. Having gone through his own personal experiences with poor health and weight struggles, Dr. Habib is well equipped to implement personalized recommendations for each of his clients. In identifying the root causes of health imbalances, and addressing them naturally, his patients experience optimal health the way their bodies were meant to feel, and allow them to give back to the world in whatever way they want to serve.

Sound Therapy: Unlocking Altered States of Consciousness for Physical & Energetic Wellbeing
Hosted by Jackie Obermeyer PhD, VST | Founder of Tuned Sound Therapy
We’ve all experienced a shift in physiology, emotion and mindset triggered by sound. The first note of a song that reminds us of an ex, or one angry honk from a car horn has the power to change our state in an instant. What if we could harness that power to release negative thought patterns, clear obsolete energetic blockages, and access higher states of being? Join Jackie Obermeyer, PhD, for a discussion about sound energy as a tool for assessing energetic health, unlocking different states of consciousness, along with identifying, interrupting and replacing subconscious programming that is limiting your potential.
Talk highlights:
- Triggering the subconscious with sound–physiological effects of music, rhythm, individual frequencies
- The vibration of food and other epigenetic factors
- Energetic blockages – superficial, inter-generational and “other”
- Brainwave entrainment-interrupting and replacing unwanted subconscious programs
- Mindset training and practices for maintaining newly formed neural networks
- Exploring different states of consciousness, developing intuition, and initiating extra-dimensional and extra-sensory experiences using sound
- Using tuning forks to assess energetic health (live demonstration)
- Guided meditation and sound bath
Jackie holds a PhD in chemical and biomedical engineering from the University of Toronto with a focus on stroke and neuroplasticity. Combining this expertise with her 25 years of musical training and performance experience, she has developed a unique strategy for optimizing energetic health and wellbeing. Using specific frequencies and combinations of sounds, she works with individuals to disrupt limiting subconscious programming and implement new neuro-architecture to support the growth and evolution of their consciousness. Jackie is a certified vibrational sound therapist, with additional certifications in Precision Nutrition coaching, and level 2 Reiki.

GMO Foods: Problems & Solutions | Nutrition & the Environment
Hosted by Sarah Dobec, BA, CNP
In 1975, the scientific community raised a red flag about the safety of this new science. Unfortunately, this concern was quickly dismissed and we have since gone from 0 to over 200 million acres growing GM crops worldwide with over 80% of all products on grocery shelves estimated to contain GMO content. Today, stopping genetic engineering of foods or forced labelling when they are used is an international movement.
Genetic Engineering is an experimental technology that merges DNA from different species, and creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. This is where the concern arises. In this public talk, the history of GMO will be discussed, along with the problems and solutions in avoiding GMO’s in the food system, “pros” and cons of GMO foods with statistics and references to help you learn more.

Cholesterol: Facts vs Fiction | Preventative Health Care
Hosted by Murat Vardar, BSc, RNCP
A controversial topic in the nutrition world and one that has a lot of misinformation associated with it is cardiovascular health, more specifically the topic of cholesterol and its role in cardiovascular disease. In this talk you will learn the truth about cholesterol and develop a new respect for it and its fundamental role in health.
In this public talk find out why cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the western world that includes both heart disease and stroke. While these two health issues are very different, with one involving the heart and the other being neurological, the process begins with the same methodology—atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is when a person has fatty deposits or plaque inside of their arteries, and if you have plaque it will affect blood flow. The big mistake people make is that they assume the fat they had recently eaten causes these deposits instantaneously! This is, of course, not true. earn how modern medical treatments stop the body from healing itself and what you can do naturally, through specific holistic principles, to stop the injury to your body in the first place.

Holistic Nutrition for Optimal Health | Nutrition & Health: The Fundamentals
Hosted by Paul Demeda, CNP, ROHP
We all want optimal health, to be vibrant, have lots of energy, be in excellent physical and mental health, and prevent disease and aging. But how do we do this?
In this public talk learn that optimal health is having enough molecules and nutrients to run the body properly, for growth, maintenance and repair, and to help prevent health issues. The problem is even if you think you eat all the right foods, you are most likely not getting all the nutrients your body needs from your food. With less nutrients in the soil, with increased levels of stress, and with our environment and food system being exposed to more and more toxins and chemicals then even, there is an even greater need for nutrients in our bodies for everyone. You will be engaged by the foundations of getting “the right molecules from the right nutrients” to get healthy and stay healthy.

Optimal Digestion for Life | Nutritional Symptomatology
Hosted by Josh Gitalis, BA(Hons), CNP, RNCP
What many of us don’t know is that we build health and—we build disease. It’s a progression either way. At some point of our lives we have all experienced digestive upset. Typically, most people see this is a bad thing and seek medical help or take an over the counter drug to rid them of their ailment. What people do not understand is that they are only suppressing the issue.
In this public talk, Josh speaks about understanding symptomatology, the slope of health and how to optimize your health and your body’s nutrients. He speaks in great detail on optimal absorption and how good digestion is crucial for sustaining life. A symptom, like a digestive upset, is the body’s way of communicating that something is wrong. Symptomatology is a clinical assessment of nutritional and biological imbalances. Common digestive problems, their physical and emotional components, and natural solutions are discussed.

Facts & Flavours, Why Choose Organic? | Nutrition & The Environment
Hosted by Sarah Dobec, BA, CNP
The health of the soil = the health of the people. Why? The soil provides nutrition to the plant, which in turn provides nutrition to the foods that we eat.
Have you ever tried to plant a seed and it did not grow? This result is often because the soil is no longer able to support life. Despite many believing soil is just dirt on the bottom of your boots, it has a lot of life including minerals, air, water and organic matter. One of the basic principles of organic agriculture is that we take the time to manage soil without the application of industrially fabricated nutrients. In this talk, Sarah offers the differences between sustainable, organic vs conventional agricultural systems along with how to naturally rebuild soil health with tradition, innovation and science ensuring good quality of life for all.

Fermented Foods: The Role of Traditional Food in Facilitating Mind & Body Health
Hosted by Graham Beck
Traditionally fermented foods are one of the first processed foods to truly add nutrition and convenience to daily life. Fermentation is an effective way to harness good-for-the-gut micro-organisms and ensure we are receiving beneficial nutrients from food—all while enhancing flavour! Sourdough bread is an example of how long fermentation of flour can make bread an easily digestible staff of life. Join Graham Beck as he discusses his passion for sourdough bread, detailing its benefit to digestion and overall health. Graham will also speak to various other fermented foods, providing insight as to why going back to the basics of fermented foods should not be overlooked in a nutritional protocol.
Highlights of this talk include:
- Why sourdough helps you digest fermented grains/flours
- How sourdough neutralizes phytic acid
- How sourdough lowers glycemic index
- The difference between the yeast contained in a complex sourdough starter vs. baker’s yeast
- How true sourdough has a dramatically different effect on systemic Candida than yeasted bread
- How the effects from the sourdough culture contributes to a healthy microbiome
- How a healthy microbiome from sourdough can contribute to healthy brain function
- How sourdough culture breaks down the gluten in glutinous grains to lessen its negative effects
Graham has deep roots in the sustainability and organic movements. He grew his passion for fermentation in the early 1980’s with an informal invitation to bake sourdough bread in the home kitchen of Poppy Weaver, Co-founder of The Green Door Restaurant. He began Little Stream Bakery in rural Ottawa Valley, Ontario in 1992, to produce artisan organic breads leavened with an old Ottawa Valley sourdough starter. Graham is currently working on the expansion of a dedicated gluten free production facility, which opened in 2017. His philosophy has inspired an extraordinary array of breads and pastries, sold all over eastern Canada and northeastern US, and also led to the creation of his latest product line, Little Stream Sauerkraut. He is an advocate for fermented foods, which he defines as “traditional foods that are more easily digestible and bio-available with deeper and richer flavours”. He also enjoys making his own kombucha, yogurt, sauerkraut and other lactic ferments.

Spring Detoxification: Medicine in the Weeds | Herbal Medicine
Hosted by Susan Elliotson RH
Weeds that are free, growing under our own two feet, are a great source of herbal medicine and can do marvelous things for your health and wellbeing.
In this public talk you learn that weeds are not only very beneficial to one’s diet, but they are an excellent tool for detoxification. With a herbal detox, the ingredients are primarily weeds. Weeds, such as dandelion, ground ivy, yarrow, red clover, stinging nettle and cleavers, are wonderful as they can help create balance, in terms of our liver, bladder, blood and lungs, kidneys and lymphatic system. The principle of a detox is to balance all organs of elimination and ensure that waste metabolites are cleared and do not come out through the skin, produce headaches, nausea, diarrhea and ultimately do not cause other major health issues.

GMO Foods: Problems & Solutions | Nutrition & the Environment
Hosted by Kathrin Brunner BA (Hons), CNP, RYT
What is a genetically modified organism (GMO) and what are their environmental, social and personal health implications? Can we live without GMOs and what are the alternatives and solutions? Which foods and supplements contain GMOs and what are the future applications of their continued use?
GMOs have been around for about 40 years. For the first time in history we are able to cross species boundaries, splicing DNA with bacteria, human cells or other genes, through a very unnatural process. The first genetically modified crop was the ‘flavr savr' tomato where fish genes were implanted into tomatoes. Now, the vast majority of GM technology goes into the resistance of herbicides and pesticides by big companies like Monsanto. This public talk uncovers some of the real concerns and issues for the future of our environment and personal health regarding GMOs.
