Brexit Betrayal, Divergence and Dishonesty - written by Shamik Das
“Can we be brave in the decisions we make, even if there is a political cost? Can we be honest when the facts change, even if it’s awkward? And can we put the long-term interests of our country before the short-term political needs of the moment, even if it means being controversial?” So asked Rishi Sunak in his net zero speech (in which he seemed to answer his rhetorical questions no, no and no) – yet we seem no closer to him or any leading politician starting a speech on the UK’s future relationship with Europe in the same vein, as recent Brexit headlines have once more demonstrated. They have centred on Labour Leader Keir Starmer’s comments about not wanting to diverge from EU rules at a summit of global progressives in Montreal, at which he also talked about putting Britain back on the world stage and showing global leadership. Those interventions sandwiched meetings in The Hague and Paris where he sought to drum home his message with key European leaders, also opening up the possibility of deals on tackling cross-border crime and migration. The response of the Conservatives and press? Not bravery, honesty and long-term thinking – but cries of ‘betrayal’ buttressing imaginative stories about what Labour would do.

Revealed NHS regulator’s ‘culture of fear’ that leaves rogue nurses free to abuse patients
Nurses and midwives accused of serious sexual, physical and racial abuse are being allowed to keep working on wards because Whistleblowers are being ignored, a damning new report has found. Staff are too scared to report their concerns to the nursing regulator because of a ‘culture of fear’ within the watchdog, documents seen by The Independent reveal. One whistleblower, speaking to this publication, drew parallels with the Lucy Letby case, accusing the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of being defensive and trying to protect their own reputations. They claim “deep-seated toxic conduct” within the NMC is leading to skewed and failed investigations. The independent review was launched after The Independent highlighted concerns earlier this year by speaking to staff who complained that the NMC was leaving nurses accused of sexual assault and domestic violence free to work unchecked.

Lib Dems to attack Tories on NHS and pensions triple lock, Ed Davey says
The Liberal Democrats are planning to open two fronts against the Conservatives in their traditional heartlands, with a campaign focused on NHS waiting lists and a pledge to protect the pensions triple lock.
In an interview with the Observer, Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, said that the scale of support his party had been receiving from lifelong Tory voters meant that there was now no Tory seat in either the “blue wall” or the Conservatives’ rural heartlands that was safe. The Lib Dems are in an increasingly optimistic mood as their annual conference takes place this week after a string of byelection wins, including in Chesham and Amersham, and Tiverton and Honiton. There is also mounting concern among Tories in constituencies where the Lib Dems are in second place. Davey’s party is now honing an election campaign designed to win over liberal, pro-remain Tory voters as well as rural communities that have been out of reach to the Lib Dems for years. He said that, unlike in the run-up to previous elections, concern about the NHS and GP waiting times was a “common thread” across all the voters it was targeting.

Inside GB News’ Misinformation Factory
GB News has just been found to have breached impartiality rules by regulator Ofcom for the third time since its launch in 2021. The decision centres around an episode of Saturday Morning with Esther and Phil, the discussion programme hosted by the Conservative MP husband and wife duo Esther McVey and Philip Davies. In something resembling a broadcast from a post-coup state, the show featured a pre-recorded interview between the pair and their own party’s Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, talking about the Government’s economic policy ahead of the spring budget. The programme received 45 complaints, and the investigation found that during the discussions “no real attention was given anywhere in the programme to the viewpoints of politicians, political parties, organisations or individuals that either, for example, criticised, opposed or put forward policy alternatives to the viewpoints given by the three Conservative politicians.” Esther and Phil aren’t the only Conservative politicians controversially hosting shows on the channel to have come under fire, with three of the four most recent investigations concerning sitting MPs. Given multiple failures to adhere to basic regulatory standards on GB News, the revolving door between the channel and politicians raises serious questions about the appropriateness of public officials continuing to accept lucrative positions with the broadcaster. Conservative MPs have been paid nearly £350,000 for appearances on GB News since the start of 2023, Byline Times analysis shows.

HS2 'Crazy' not to review project over soaring costs - Shapps
IMPORTANT: When I spoke about the High Speed Network unto Europe, I meant us (UK) not being a part of it anymore due to Brexit.
The former transport secretary has said it would be "crazy" not to review plans for the HS2 rail link as costs have soared. Grant Shapps told the BBC that the Ukraine war and a spike in inflation mean any government would need to make "serious decisions" on affordability. The BBC understands a definitive decision on HS2 could be made as soon as this week.
The government has so far refused to commit to the current plans.
HS2 is intended to link London, the Midlands and the north of England - the first part, between west London and Birmingham, is in mid-construction.
But the scheme as a whole has already faced delays, cost increases and cuts - including to the planned eastern leg between Birmingham and Leeds.
The last official estimate on HS2 costs, excluding the cancelled eastern section, added up to about £71bn. This was in 2019 prices so it does not account for the spike in costs for materials and wages, for example, in recent months. Speaking to Victoria Derbyshire on the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg programme, Mr Shapps said that no decision on the project's future had been taken as of yet.

Government scraps £5m plan to fund school cooking ‘revolution’ less than 2 years after unveiling
The Government has scrapped a £5m plan to fund a “school cooking revolution” just 19 months after it was unveiled, i can reveal. In February 2022, the Government announced plans for a school cooking revolution as part of its levelling up agenda. The scheme aimed to tackle the country’s rising child obesity problem. Around 10 per cent of children aged between four and five in England are obese, with a further 12 per cent considered to be overweight. These numbers rise with age, with 23.4 per cent of children aged between 10 and 11 considered to be obese. Children living in the most deprived parts of England are also far more likely to be obese than those in less deprived regions. In an effort to tackle this issue, the Government’s school cooking revolution aimed to give children the ability to cook at least six healthy recipes that they would be able to leave secondary school with.
The scheme, which had funding set aside for up to £5m, would also pay for new food-based materials for the national curriculum as well as a new pilot to monitor food standards in schools.

Business chiefs urge Labour to consider 'fantastic plan to rejoin EU under new membership scheme!
Business bosses have urged Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to consider a bold plan to bring Britain back into the EU’s orbit through “associate membership”. The French and German governments commissioned a report recommending a new outer tier for non-members, which could be open to the UK, in a bid to forge closer economic ties. Under the associate membership plan, outer-tier countries would be expected to contribute to the EU’s annual budget in exchange for “participation” in the bloc’s single market. Labour insisted the idea was a “non-starter” – but eyebrows were raised when it emerged that Sir Keir had told fellow leaders at a conference in Canada that “we don’t want to diverge” from EU rules. British trade chiefs frustrated by Brexit red tape told The Independent that they welcome the idea of associate membership – saying it would be “fantastic” to remove tariff barriers and cut down on current friction. It came as The Independent revealed that Sir Keir and French president Emmanuel Macron held secret Brexit talks in Paris and “covered all the difficult issues, not just pleasantries” – although Sir Keir has ruled out rejoining the bloc if Labour comes into power.

Russell Brand & the allegations!
Warning: This article contains details of a graphic nature that readers may find distressing!
The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches published their joint investigation on Saturday accusing Russell Brand of rape, sexual assault and abuse. Four women alleged Brand assaulted them between 2006 and 2013.
This period marks the height of Brand's fame - he was a presenter for the BBC and Channel 4 before becoming a high-profile Hollywood star.
The comedian vehemently denied "very serious criminal allegations" in a YouTube video on Friday night, claiming his relationships were "always consensual".
Rumble has refused to follow in YouTube's steps and demonetise Russell Brand after claims of sexual abuse were made against him. The free-speech video streaming platform said it was "deeply inappropriate and dangerous" for Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the House of Commons media committee, to ask if they would stop Brand earning advertising revenue on Rumble. The 48-year-old comedian, who found fame in stand-up comedy and on traditional TV, is thought to have made most of his money in recent years through uploading videos on YouTube and Rumble.

Warning petrol ban delay could stop people buying electric cars
Delaying a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars could put drivers off switching to electric, the boss of the UK's motoring industry body has warned. Ministers are understood to be considering pushing back a planned ban from 2030 to 2035. Mike Hawes, of the Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders, said the "message" it would send to consumers would be "incredibly confusing". But a drivers campaign group said it was "delighted" by a potential delay. Fair Fuel UK said the costs of policy would outweigh the benefits and it was "always doomed to be dropped". Since 2020, the government's policy has been to ban the sale of new, pure petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 as part of a broader plan to reach net zero. However, multiple sources have told the BBC that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is considering weakening the plan, along with several other green commitments, to save money.

MPs Demand Answers From GB News on ‘Serious Accusations’ Against Dan Wootton
The Chair of Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee has written to GB News demanding to know what actions it has taken following the “serious accusations” against their presenter Dan Wooton. Wootton is currently under investigation by his former employers at The Sun and he has also been suspended as a columnist for MailOnline, after Byline Times revealed extensive allegations about his behaviour while working for the two publications. However, despite these allegations, Wootton has continued to host his GB News show and used it to claim that “dark forces” are trying to bring him and GB News down. The Culture Committee’s Conservative chair Caroline Dineage has today written to the channel’s Chief Executive Angelos Frangopoulos asking whether he has launched any investigations into the allegations against Wootton and reminding him that it is “vital that those working in and with the media can be confident that they are working in a safe environment”.

Meta encryption plan will let child abusers ‘hide in the dark’, says UK campaign
Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to roll out encrypted messaging on his platforms will let child abusers “hide in the dark”, according to a government campaign urging the tech billionaire to halt the move. The Facebook founder has been under pressure from ministers over plans to automatically encrypt communications on his Messenger service later this year, with Instagram expected to follow soon after. On Wednesday the Home Office launched a new campaign, including a statement from an abuse survivor, urging Zuckerberg’s Meta to halt its plans until it has safety plans in place to detect child abuse activity within encrypted messages. A video to be distributed on social media features a message from one survivor, Rhiannon-Faye McDonald, who addresses her concerns to Mark Zuckerberg. “Your plans will let abusers hide in the dark,” she says as she urges the Meta CEO to “take responsibility”. McDonald, 33, was groomed online and sexually abused at the age of 13, although she did not encounter her abuser on Meta platforms.
The campaign was launched a day after the online safety bill, which privacy campaigners fear could undermine encryption, completed its passage through parliament.

GB News interview with chancellor breached impartiality rules, says Ofcom
GB News breached impartiality rules in an interview with Jeremy Hunt, the broadcasting watchdog has found.Philip Davies and Esther McVey, two Tory MPs who host a regular show on the channel, interviewed the chancellor ahead of the Spring Budget in March. The watchdog said the interview failed to include an "appropriately wide range of significant views". GB News said it was "disappointed" by the decision, and called Ofcom's definition of impartiality "imprecise". In its submissions to Ofcom, GB News argued the programme, which included multiple guests, gave "due weight" to other views. The broadcaster argued the interview was approached "from the perspective of 'the right'" and it allowed for a free debate on a wide range of views. This is the third breach of Ofcom rules recorded against GB News since it launched in June 2021.

Unions warn of thousands of job losses at cash strapped local councils
Trade unions are warning of thousands of job cuts across local councils as authorities attempt to avoid bankruptcy. As well as tens of millions in cuts to local services, authorities across England are now looking to redundancies and a pause on filling vacancies to make up millions more. With dozens of local councils facing tough choices to avoid following Birmingham City Council into bankruptcy, unions are also fearful of pay cuts to workers in front line services such as refuse collection. Onay Kasab, a national lead officer for the Unite union, told i: “We are certainly looking at thousands of job cuts in local government. This isn’t something that’s happened overnight. This is something that has been building up over years due to the lack of adequate funding from central government. “We’ve had years of cuts to local budgets which have led to services being cut to the bone.” Mr Kasab added that many local authorities had already reduced staff numbers through offering early retirement, via voluntary redundancies and by not filling vacant positions.

Tories have taken £291,000 in gifts from airports as Sunak eyes runway U turn
Airport operators have lavished Britain’s last three prime ministers with VIP services worth more than £200,000 since the 2019 election, analysis by openDemocracy has found. Liz Truss, Boris Johnson and Theresa May are among the Conservative MPs who have accepted more than £275,000 in donations-in-kind from airport operators, while Conservative Party HQ has also taken more than £13,500 in donations from airport operators.
It comes as the government signals its backing for airport expansions, in contrast with advice from its own climate advisers that adding runways to Heathrow and Gatwick would be incompatible with the UK’s net zero goals. The Department of Transport told openDemocracy it was “supportive of airport expansion where it can be delivered in a sustainable way”.
Peter Barclay, the chair of Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign, said gifts to the Conservative Party were “all part of the industry’s efforts to oil the government machine in their favour”.

Sir Keir Starmer sets his sights on closer relationship with Europe if Labour win next election
Labour will look to build a closer trading relationship with the EU if it wins the next election, Sir Keir Starmer has said. The Labour leader spent the weekend meeting fellow centre-left leaders in Montreal, Canada, including the country's prime minister Justin Trudeau. The party has long been critical of the deal negotiated by the Conservatives under Boris Johnson, with the Trade and Cooperation Agreement up for review in 2025. Speaking to The Financial Times, Sir Keir said: "Almost everyone recognises the deal Johnson struck is not a good deal - it's far too thin.

NHS sinks into £7bn cash crisis as inflation and strikes bite
The NHS is heading into an unprecedented financial crisis and will overspend its budget by at least £7bn next year as the effects of inflation and strikes plunge hospital trusts into alarming levels of debt, according to leading independent experts. The problem of soaring deficits is hitting a growing number of trusts across England ahead of a likely general election within 12 months, and will raise further serious doubts about Rishi Sunak’s chances of meeting his pledge to cut record waiting lists. In a sign of the extreme pressures, the Manchester Integrated Care System, bringing together trusts and other healthcare providers in Greater Manchester, has brought in Stephen Hay, a troubleshooter from PricewaterhouseCoopers who formerly worked in the NHS, to help sort out its disastrous financial position.

Antarctic sea-ice at 'mind-blowing' low alarms experts
The sea-ice surrounding Antarctica is well below any previous recorded winter level, satellite data shows, a worrying new benchmark for a region that once seemed resistant to global warming. "It's so far outside anything we've seen, it's almost mind-blowing," says Walter Meier, who monitors sea-ice with the National Snow and Ice Data Center. An unstable Antarctica could have far-reaching consequences, polar experts warn. Antarctica's huge ice expanse regulates the planet's temperature, as the white surface reflects the Sun's energy back into the atmosphere and also cools the water beneath and near it. Without its ice cooling the planet, Antarctica could transform from Earth's refrigerator to a radiator, experts say. The ice that floats on the Antarctic Ocean's surface now measures less than 17 million sq km - that is 1.5 million sq km of sea-ice less than the September average, and well below previous winter record lows. That's an area of missing ice about five times the size of the British Isles.

State pension rise 650,000 more retirees to pay income tax for first time due to triple lock
The number of pensioners paying tax will increase by over half a million as a result of next year’s increase to the state pension combined with the ongoing freezing of tax thresholds. Figures release by the Office for National Statistics today have shown that average wages grew by 8.5 per cent compared with the previous year. This figure is highly likely to be the rate that determines the increase of the state pension next year as, under the triple lock agreement, the state pension must rise with the highest of three options. These are the rate of inflation, average earnings growth or 2.5 per cent.

Labour's Angela Rayner makes 'cast iron commitment' on workers' rights!
Angela Rayner declared the battle to win over voters at the next general election is "getting started" as she revealed Labour's vision to boost workers' rights. In a speech at the TUC conference in Liverpool, Labour's deputy leader gave a "cast iron commitment" to push through an employment rights bill within 100 days of entering office if the party win the keys to Downing Street. The New Deal for Working People would include protections against unfair dismissal, a ban on zero-hour contracts, more flexible working and ending fire and rehire (when an employer fires an employee and offers them a new contract on new, often less favourable terms). Ms Rayner said: "I come here with one message today, that the next Labour government will build an economy that works for working people, with a new deal for working people. "Labour will start by bringing forward an employment rights bill to legislate for this within the first 100 days of entering office. That's a cast iron commitment."

Home Office Faces Legal Challenge Against ‘Appalling’ Use of Bibby Stockholm Barge to House Refugees
A Labour mayor has launched a legal challenge to Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s use of the Bibby Stockholm barge to accommodate around 500 male asylum-seekers at Portland Port in Dorset, without obtaining planning permission. Carralyn Parkes is a Portland Town Councillor and Mayor of Portland, bit is acting in a personal capacity as a local resident. Dorset Council and Portland Port Limited have backed the claim as “interested parties”, meaning that they will have the opportunity to make submissions, file evidence and participate in the case. It comes after a deadly legionella strain was found onboard the Bibby Stockholm. It was detected on the first day people boarded on 7 August, with officials evacuating all 39 people onboard that day, the Guardian reported. Parkes is asking the Court to declare that the Home Office’s use of the barge as asylum accommodation is capable of constituting ‘development’ under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, and therefore that it may amount to a breach of planning control and possible enforcement action by Dorset Council.

Government may have broken law over sewage watchdog
The UK's environment watchdog suspects the government and water regulators have broken the law over how they regulate sewage releases.
It follows continued high levels of sewage releases in England which topped 825 times a day last year. Campaigners and opposition MPs have called the regulators "complicit" in allowing the pollution. The government said it did not agree with the Office for Environmental Protection's "initial interpretations". Last week a BBC investigation found potentially hundreds of illegal dry sewage spills in England. In response to the announcement the government said: "The volume of sewage discharged is completely unacceptable. That is why we are the first government in history to take such comprehensive action to tackle it."

Five key takeaways from G20 summit ‘We need bolder action’
The Group of 20 summit in New Delhi managed to defy expectations on Sunday and reach consensus on a joint declaration by world leaders, but not without compromises over the Ukraine conflict and action on climate change. The consensus came as a surprise. In the weeks leading to the summit, sharply differing views on the war threatened to derail the meeting with Western nations demanding members call out Moscow for the invasion and Russia saying it would block any resolution that did not reflect its position. The Global South’s position in the talks helped prevent the G20 agenda from being overshadowed by Ukraine, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. “India has truly consolidated G20 members from the Global South.”
