Ukraine Update: Saudi Arabia to host peace talks plus Wagner to stop recruitment!
Saudi Arabia is preparing to host a summit to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan for peace in his country amid the ongoing Russian invasion, according to a senior official in Kyiv. Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, said on Sunday that officials from several countries would take part in the Saudi Arabian summit but did not say when or in which city the meeting will be held.

Explosions occurred in Moscow, Bryansk, and Rostov regions in Russia, and the Chonhar bridge in occupied Crimea was hit, while Russian attacks took at least five civilian lives in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Donetsk regions. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) continued offensive operations on at least three sectors of the front and made claimed advances in some areas, ISW reported. Ukrainian military sources claimed small successes on the southern flank of Bakhmut and gradual advances in the Berdyansk (western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhzhia regional boundary area) and Melitopol (in western Zaporizhzhia region) axes.

The Wagner Group claimed on July 30 that it had "indefinitely" suspended recruitment of new members as it possesses sufficiently "large personnel reserves." "Due to the presence of large personnel reserves in the Wagner private military company (PMC), there is currently no need to recruit new members," the Wagner Group's press service wrote on its Telegram channel. "The work of the regional recruitment centers of the Wagner PMC is suspended indefinitely."

Trump could be indicted soon in Georgia Here’s a look at that investigation!
A Georgia prosecutor is expected to seek a grand jury indictment in the coming weeks in her investigation into efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the former president’s 2020 election loss.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis began investigating more than two years ago, shortly after a recording was released of a January 2021 phone call Trump made to Georgia’s secretary of state. Willis has strongly hinted that any indictment would come between July 31 and August 18. One of two grand juries seated July 11 is expected to hear the case.
If Trump is indicted by a Georgia grand jury, it would add to a growing list of legal troubles as he campaigns for president. Trump is set to go to trial in New York in March to face state charges related to hush-money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign. And he has another trial scheduled for May on federal charges related to his handling of classified documents. He has pleaded not guilty in those cases.
The Justice Department is also investigating Trump’s role in trying to halt the certification of 2020 election results in the run-up to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Trump said he’s been told he’s a target of that investigation, which likely has some overlap with the one in Georgia.

Tories Hit with Council of Europe Rebuke Over Charging Journalists to Cover Party Conference
The Council of Europe has issued a damning rebuke of the Conservatives charging journalists at least £137 to attend its conference this autumn.
The party sparked a row over press freedom after introducing fees for each journalist’s application. The Council of Europe – the pan-European body of which the European Court of Human Rights is a part – has now issued a “media freedom warning”, noting that the policy “sets a deeply concerning precedent in a democratic society”. In a statement, the Council of Europe – of which the UK is a member – pointed to the “ruling Conservative Party” sparking anger from “journalists and outlets from across the world”.
The News Media Society, the Society of Editors and the Foreign Press Association are among around 300 reporters and organisations to protest the fees, saying that it is “wrong in principle, a serious media freedom issue and a barrier to open democracy”.

Thousands of children in England facing ‘heartbreaking’ waits for NHS dental care
Thousands of children in England are experiencing “heartbreaking” long waits for NHS dental care, with some waiting “in agony” for years to have teeth extracted, according to shocking new figures. Health leaders and MPs warned of a “perfect storm” in which children are struggling to access dentists to nip minor issues “in the bud”, and then facing horrific waiting times for operations to fix problems that have spiralled out of control.
Data obtained under freedom of information laws and reviewed by the Guardian show children in some parts of England are waiting up to 18 months on average for dental procedures under general anaesthetic, principally tooth extractions. Some have waited several years.
About 27,000 children were on waiting lists for specialist dental care, assessments or procedures in January, according to the figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats from the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA).

Suella Braverman refuses plea of man barred from UK to be reunited with son!!
The home secretary, Suella Braverman, has personally intervened to bar a man living in exile in Turkey from being reunited in the UK with his British son. Siyabonga Twala from Chester has been in limbo in Ankara for more than six months after he was blocked from boarding a flight back to Manchester last December. He wrote to the Home Office asking to be allowed to come back but instead Braverman has ordered his exclusion “on the basis of serious criminality” because of a cannabis offence from five years ago. Twala’s lawyer said Braverman’s intervention set a “worrying precedent”. Twala was on his way back from a family holiday to South Africa with his nine-year-old son, Mason, and his parents and siblings when he was prevented from boarding a flight home at Istanbul airport on 30 December.
The trip was the first time that Twala, 34, had returned since his family relocated from Durban to Chester when he was 15. Twala had residency in the UK having grown up in Britain but had not yet applied for citizenship. His immigration status now hangs in the balance because of a 2018 conviction for possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Staff at Home Office funded hotel accused of ‘treating migrant like slave’
Staff at government-contracted hotels have been accused of treating a migrant person in their care “like a slave” and hitting a child, a dossier of complaints obtained by openDemocracy reveals. Among 11,800 calls made to the Home Office helpline Migrant Help last year were 1,400 complaints relating to hotel accommodation. They included allegations of sexual assault within hotels; workers being racist, sexist, and violent; and a staff member “joking” about the Rwanda deportation scheme. Disease outbreaks, food, and a failure to meet basic needs such as arranging transport for medical appointments were also singled out.

Southern Europe braces for second heat storm in a week
Southern Europe is bracing for a second heat storm in a week, with Italy, Greece and Spain, along with Morocco and other Mediterranean countries, being told temperature records could be broken on Tuesday.
A new anticyclone that pushed into the region from north Africa on Sunday could lift temperatures above the record 48.8C (120F) seen in Sicily in August 2021, and follows last week’s Cerberus heatwave.
The European Space Agency (ESA) said the next week could bring the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Europe in a heatwave named Charon after the Greek mythological boatman who ferries souls to the underworld.

Silence from Dan Wootton’s Employers MailOnline and GB News as Head of Commons
The chair of the Commons’ Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee has written to the editor of The Sun so it can “set out what investigations are taking place” into its former employee Dan Wootton – after Byline Times revealed the presenter hid behind fake online identities to trick and bribe men into revealing compromising sexual material. However, Wootton’s current employers – MailOnline and GB News – have still not responded to any questions by this newspaper about whether and why he is still contracted to work for them. While Wootton’s twice-weekly MailOnline column has not appeared since Byline Times’ investigation was published, he is still appearing on GB News’ Dan Wootton Tonight. Conservative MP Dame Caroline Dinenage wrote to Victoria Newton, editor of The Sun, yesterday, 24 July, about its coverage of the recent ‘BBC presenter scandal’ implicating Huw Edwards, and Byline Times’ investigations into Wootton.
“Our role is not to challenge individual stories or editorial decisions, but we would be grateful if you could set out the processes by which The Sun verifies any story it chooses to report, especially those where issues of privacy may be at stake,” Dame Dinenage said.

Scandal of refugee families separated by UK red tape
Refugees waiting to be reunited with their families in Britain have been subjected to rape and are living in hiding under totalitarian regimes as they wait to be brought to safety, as a “life-threatening” backlog grows.
Figures obtained by The Independent show more than 11,000 people who are currently waiting for relocation are stranded abroad while being failed by one of the government’s only “safe and legal routes” to the UK.
The majority are women and children, in countries including Syria, Afghanistan and Iran. In all the cases, one of their close family members has already been granted protection in the UK and has the right to bring their partners and children to join them. One Sudanese refugee told The Independent he has been waiting for almost a year for a visa for his wife and son, who are stranded amid a raging conflict that has already claimed his nephew’s life. In another shocking incident, one girl was “followed home from school and raped” by Iranian security forces while waiting for the Home Office to process her visa. Meanwhile, hundreds of women remain trapped under the brutal Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

Sadiq Khan committed to ULEZ expansion but happy to look at ways to mitigate financial impact
Sadiq Khan is still committed to expanding the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) but is happy to look at new ideas for ways to mitigate the financial impact on Londoners, Sky News understands. The London mayor is understood to be willing to consider measures as long as they do not reduce the policy's effectiveness at improving air quality. Mr Khan's plans to expand ULEZ to encompass the outer boroughs of London from 29 August have been blamed for Labour failing to take Boris Johnson's old seat. The change means drivers across the capital will face a £12.50 daily charge unless their car meets stringent emissions rules. A source close to the Labour mayor said: "Sadiq has been clear he is listening to Londoners following this by-election."

Rishi Sunak slammed for ‘helicopter lifestyle’ as he claims to be ‘on the side’ of drivers!
Rishi Sunak has been criticised for living a “helicopter lifestyle” despite claiming to be “on the side” of motorists. The prime minister has come under fire for taking a 200-mile helicopter trip to attend a campaign event in Wrexham, North Wales, despite the fact that the journey by train would have taken just 10 minutes longer. It came as Mr Sunak claimed he was “on the side” of drivers amid rising concerns about the cost of policies aimed at curbing the use of cars. The PM has repeatedly come under fire for using a helicopter to travel to campaign events and official visits. In May he was branded “out of touch” for paying more than £10,000 to fly by private helicopter to a Tory party dinner in Wales. And attacks on Mr Sunak stepped up after he flew in a luxury Bell 429 GlobalRanger on Friday to visit the premises of online retailer Net World Sports. The journey from London to Chester would have emitted more than a tonne of CO2 into the atmosphere during the hottest month yet recorded.

Some Tory MPs lobbied for ‘blanket ban’ on children being able to identify as transgender in schools
Tory MPs tried to pressure the Government into banning children from being able to identify as transgender in schools, senior Government sources told i.
Right-wing Tory MPs Miriam Cates and Nick Fletcher were among a handful of MPs to have lobbied ministers to introduce a “blanket ban” on children being able to identify as the opposite gender to that assigned at birth, the sources said. The Department for Education (DfE) is due to publish draft guidance next week advising schools on how to approach issues around gender identity, after teaching leaders accused the Government of leaving them “in the crossfire”.

Revealed Major US banks are funding anti LGBTIQ groups
The Bank of America and Goldman Sachs have both been lauded for their LGBTIQ-friendly workplaces. But tax filings uncovered by OpenDemocracy show nonprofit foundations linked to the banks have also funded ultraconservative groups fighting to roll back civil rights for the queer community worldwide. From 2017 to 2020, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation handed out more than $390,000 to eight such organisations who between them have resisted same-sex marriage laws and anti-discrimination protections for LGBTIQ people, challenged contraception and abortion access, and sought to ban gender-affirming healthcare for trans people.
OpenDemocracy also uncovered donations by the Shell Oil Company Foundation and the Motorola Solutions Foundation, as well as charitable foundations of the US Chamber of Commerce, and Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America lobby groups. Between them, the six organisations donated $1.3m to anti-rights groups over three years, according to the publicly available financial filings in the US, where they are registered as nonprofits and must disclose some information about their income and spending.

Revealed children’s care homes flood into cheapest areas of England, not where most needed
New children’s care homes are being disproportionately placed in cheaper and more deprived parts of England, according to an Observer investigation.
Over the past five years the number of children’s care homes located in areas with the cheapest house sale prices has risen almost three times faster than in the most expensive places. Among the regions with big increases in homes was the north-west, including in parts of Blackpool and Burnley and other northern cities such as Bradford. Children’s services directors warned that the trends were driven by the “blatant profiteering” of private care providers, targeting cheap housing and local labour. The findings suggest private companies are locating homes where it is cheapest for them to do so, rather than where they are needed. The practice helps them increase profits. However, it also means vulnerable children can end up being moved hundreds of miles for a care place, splitting them from family and support networks that they rely on. It comes after the Observer revealed that some children were being moved to care homes more than 300 miles away from their neighbourhoods.

Putin Says Russia Has 'Sufficient' Clusters & Ukraine may force expulsion of Russian's in Crimea!
Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country had enough cluster munition to answer if Ukraine was to use the weapons, in an interview published Sunday. Ukraine started receiving cluster weapons from the United States, a move that sparked concerns due to the long-term risk posed to civilians by bomblets that fail to explode. "Russia has a sufficient stockpile of various kinds of cluster munitions," Putin told a state-television journalist.
The controversial weapons can disperse up to several hundred small explosive charges, which can remain unexploded in the ground.
"If they are used against us, we reserve ourselves the right to tit-for-tat actions," Putin said. He added Russia had not yet used the weapons despite a "certain shortage of munitions at some point." Human Rights Watch and Ukrainian forces have accused Russia of already using cluster munitions on the battlefield. They are banned by numerous countries -- notably in Europe -- that are signatories to a 2008 Oslo Convention, to which neither Russia, the United States nor Ukraine are parties. Humanitarian groups have strongly condemned the US decision to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden said the decision was "very difficult" but stressed Ukraine needed extra ammunition to refill its depleted stocks.

Tamila Tasheva, President Volodymyr Zelensky's permanent representative for Crimea, told Newsweek on July 16 that Ukraine will have to deal with an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 Russian citizens who came illegally to Crimea after annexation. According to Tasheva, those who do not leave before the liberation of the peninsula will be faced with "forced expulsion." Tasheva says Kyiv may also punish as many as 10,000 Ukrainians on the peninsula for cooperating with Russian occupation authorities. Tasheva stressed that Ukrainian citizens living in Russian-occupied territory did not necessarily mean that they were collaborators and in such cases, Ukraine "will do everything to protect their rights."
"And there can be extenuating circumstances—many of them were victims of Russian propaganda, of intimidation and threats, of the Russian legal system, and even the Russian culture and language. All of that needs to be taken into consideration," Tasheva added. The appropriate legal framework is being considered to punish those Ukrainians who have actively been aiding Russian occupation authorities, Tasheva explained.
Russia staged a sham referendum in 2014 to annex the Crimean Peninsula. It has been used as a military base by Russian forces.

Ofgem warns energy suppliers it will clamp down on excess profits
The head of Ofgem has fired a warning shot at suppliers as the worst energy crisis since the 1970s abates, making clear that the regulator will clamp down on excess profits and that firms with weak finances should not pay dividends. Jonathan Brearley, the chief executive of Ofgem, said during the past two years the country had seen an “energy crisis genuinely unprecedented since at least the 1970s” and as more normal conditions returned it would be alive to profiteering. “We will be vigilant in the way the price cap changes so it continues only to reflect costs reasonably incurred in the market,” he said. “We acted quickly to make changes to allowances in the price cap as prices rose and suppliers struggled to stem excessive losses, and we will act equally quickly to adjust the price cap if we see undue rewards across the sector as prices fall and profits return.”

NATO Summit: How the Alliance is strengthening its eastern flank
World leaders gathering in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius on Tuesday for a two-day NATO summit will seek to formulate a united message on Ukraine’s eventual membership within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization amid efforts to reinforce the Alliance’s eastern front in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. NATO began increasing its military presence on its eastern flank (Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria) following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. Four months after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the Alliance would boost the number of troops on high alert by more than sevenfold to more than 300,000.

Most NHS staff say they don’t have enough time to spend with patients
Most NHS staff think they have too little time to help patients and the quality of care the service provides is falling, a survey reveals. Medical and nursing groups said the “very worrying” findings showed that hard-pressed staff cannot give patients as much attention as they would like because they are so busy. In polling YouGov carried out for the Guardian, 71% of NHS staff who have direct contact with patients said they did not have the amount of time they would like to have to help them. A third (34%) felt they had “somewhat less than enough time” and 37% “far less than enough time” than they wanted. Almost a quarter (23%) felt they had the right amount of time while just 3% said they had “more time” than they wanted. The polling firm also asked a sample of doctors, nurses and other staff who have worked in the NHS for at least five years if the time they have to spend with patients has got better or worse since 2018. Nearly three-quarters – 74% – replied “worse”, while just 2% said “better”.

Media Watchdog Ofcom ‘Ignores Complaints’ About Climate Science Denial on GB News and Right Wing Out
Extinction Rebellion (XR) says it has been repeatedly ignored by broadcast regulator Ofcom, in response to complaints about disinformation over climate change in the media. Tom Hardy, a member of XR’s media team, says the group’s reports of misinformation over the climate crisis have been roundly ignored by the broadcasting watchdog, which regulates TV and radio to ensure news is impartial and factual. GB News and Rupert Murdoch’s TalkRadio are seen as frequent hosts to climate “sceptics” accused of ignoring the scientific consensus. The climate activist has written to Ofcom about a range of shows, including a Julia Hartley Brewer radio segment where the host allegedly denied scientific evidence and disparaged guests with differing views. It comes after GB News host Neil Oliver suggested weather maps were “woke,” saying: “Weather maps are among the most blatant and inexcusable fearmongering deployed so far” for identifying areas as red when temperatures are high. In 2021, the Met Office updated its colour coding of high temperatures to make maps more readable for colour blind people.

Living in ‘an oven’ Heatwave grips displacement camps in Syria
Idlib, Syria – Under a scorching sun, Hamida Dandoush sprinkles water on her tent in an attempt to cool it down, hoping to alleviate the high temperatures for herself and her family. The 62-year-old woman from the town of Maardabsah is residing in the Saharah camp near the Syrian-Turkish border, where approximately 80 displaced families are enduring harsh living conditions amid the intense heatwave striking the region. “We live as if we are inside an oven, struggling to breathe due to the heat inside the tent. If it weren’t for the water we sprinkle on the tent, we would have died from the intense heat,” Dandoush told Al Jazeera on Saturday. Dandoush, who lives in a tent with her daughter and grandchild, said that every day she makes seemingly futile attempts to cool things down, including placing her grandchild in a plastic container and pouring cold water over him.
“If elderly people like us cannot bear this weather, how can young children?” said Dandoush. “Yesterday, my grandson started trembling and had difficulty breathing, so we took him to the hospital, and they told us it happened due to the heat inside the tent.”

Labour rules on lobbying would ‘clean up politics’, says Angela Rayner
Labour would ban ministers from taking lobbying jobs related to their former brief for up to five years, in order to “fix the broken standards system and clean up politics”. If the rules were breached, the former ministers would face fines decided by a commission in line with proposals outlined by the committee on standards in public life, which also include the possibility of losing a proportion of their pension or the severance payment that is paid once they leave office. The Guardian understands any former minister would need to approach the party’s newly proposed integrity and ethics commission before taking a paid role. The commission would then decide if the role was considered lobbying, advocacy or portfolio related.

Labour now leads Tories on every major issue facing the country piling more pressure on Rishi Sunak
Labour is ahead of the Conservatives on every single major issue facing the UK, including the cost of living crisis, the wider economy, immigration and the NHS, a new poll shows. In a further sign of the trouble the Tories find themselves in, the party lags behind Labour on each of the main policy areas as well as on headline voting intention. The polling, conducted by BMG Consulting for i, shows that on the major issues voters trust Labour more, although in several other pressing matters the public is still wholly undecided choosing “none of the above”.

Labour and Lib Dems will work together in general election but no formal pact! Insider says!
Labour and the Lib Dems will work together to deliver the Tories a fatal blow at the general election, despite denying an official Lib-Lab pact, insiders have suggested. Speaking to i at the Somerton and Frome by-election count in the early hours of Friday morning, Labour’s Bristol North West MP Darren Jones, said the Lib Dems’ overturning of a 19,213 majority in the former Tory stronghold was “great news” for Labour. Mr Jones added: “Let’s be honest, this is great for us to have the Lib Dems winning in the West Country as these are seats we won’t win.”

Keir Starmer won't commit to more money for public services
Sir Keir Starmer has refused to say whether a Labour government would spend more money on public services. The Labour leader told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg his party would always invest in public services but to do this it needed to grow the economy. "That has to start with responsible economics and it has to be coupled with reform," he added.
Some, including Labour's biggest union backer Unite, have called for the party to be more ambitious in its pledges. However, Sir Keir insisted his promise to reform public services was bold. He told the BBC he did not just want to offer "sticking plaster" solutions. "If our horizon and focus is only on the immediate problems, we will never fix the fundamentals," he said, adding that the NHS was "a classic example". He also gave the example of building more homes, which he said could be achieved not by spending taxpayers money but by reforming the planning system and restoring housebuilding targets.

Keir Starmer clashes with unions after refusing to back down on two child benefit cap
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has seen off attempts to push the party into committing to repeal the two-child benefit cap and toughen up workers’ rights in its election manifesto. Sir Keir set himself up for a clash with the party’s union backers after he refused to compromise at the meeting of the party’s national policy forum this weekend. The policy document produced by the forum, which will make up the initial framework of Labour’s next manifesto, contains “no unfunded spending commitments”, a spokesman said.
