Thousands of criminals left prison 'unlawfully' over past decade, figures show
More than 2,000 prisoners have escaped, absconded or been released by mistake over the past decade - including 142 in the past year alone, figures show. Labour - which highlighted the statistics - has accused the Conservatives of being "soft on crime" after the party found that more than three inmates have left prison unlawfully every week since 2012.
The Ministry of Justice data for England and Wales covers the period March 2012 to March 2023. It showed that since 2012, 146 criminals have escaped from prison, 1,634 have absconded - meaning an escape that does not involve overcoming a physical security restraint such as a wall or fence - and 672 were released in error: a total of 2,452.

Sudan war Bashir era figures regain influence as battle for control rages
Sudan's war is now in its fourth month, with both the Sudanese army and its enemy, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), still convinced they can win. From the beginning, the warring parties have sought support from outside powers, while looking to portray themselves as the sole legitimate military representatives of the Sudanese people. Assistance from foreign states may end up being decisive on the battlefield. But civilian movements inside Sudan will also be crucial, both while the fighting continues and for whatever follows a ceasefire. The army and RSF are courting different civilian groups, while those same political movements are also looking to exert control over the warring parties.

REVEALED Met Police Will Fail to Fairly Represent London’s Diversity for Decades
It could take nearly fifty years for the Metropolitan Police to reflect London’s ethnic diversity at the current pace of progress, according to figures analysed for Byline Times. Ethnic minority representation among the Met Police workforce as a whole has risen by just 0.5 percentage points over the past year – suggesting it would again take decades to bring this up to being representative of London as a whole, as the recent Casey Review into racism recommended. A fifth of the Met Police’s 45,000 strong workforce is from non-white backgrounds, compared to around 46% of London as a whole.
At the same time, female representation among officers is rising at just one percentage point a year – meaning it could take another 20 years to get to roughly 50/50 equal representation.

Revealed Elite club took £150,000 from property firm…then donated to Tories
A“dark money” group that helps bankroll the Conservative Party has in turn taken donations worth six figures from businesses linked to wealthy foreign nationals who are banned from making their own political donations.
Analysis by openDemocracy shows that the Carlton Club – an elite private members’ club in London that has long funded the Tories – has handed out more than £247,000 to the Conservative Party and its MPs since the last election. But the Carlton Club has itself received well over half that sum from two companies run by wealthy Swiss, German and Russian nationals who are not UK citizens. Under election law, only UK citizens are allowed to make political donations, but loopholes allow their money to be passed via third parties such as these. It is two years since an independent government advisory group, the Committee on Standards in Public Life, urged then-PM Boris Johnson to close the loophole – something neither he nor his successors have done.

North east mayor slams Starmer’s green rollback after quitting Labour
The ex-Labour mayor of the UK’s poorest region has slammed Keir Starmer for watering down the party’s environmental commitments.
In an exclusive interview with openDemocracy in his office in Newcastle, North of Tyne mayor Jamie Driscoll said: “There is no contradiction between protecting us from the climate emergency, and prosperity. In fact, if you fail to protect us from the climate emergency, you’re going to lose all prosperity in the future.” Labour’s leadership has blamed its failure to take Boris Johnson’s former constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip in the recent by-election on London mayor Sadiq Khan’s plan to expand the city’s ‘ultra-low emission zone’ (ULEZ) into the area. But Driscoll, who dramatically quit Labour last month, said the party would have won the seat if it had stood by the scheme and campaigned against Tory cuts to bus services in the capital.
“Labour would have won the Uxbridge by-election if they had said: ‘Yes, it [ULEZ] is a problem, because the Tories have cut public transport in London – if we had better buses here, which we will do, you’ll be better off,’” he said. “That would have won them it… A lot of people who voted Green because they were outraged by Labour’s abandonment [of ULEZ] probably would have voted Labour.”

Benefits taken away to pay for utilities without consent
The government is still deducting money from people's Universal Credit to pay their utility bills, despite it losing a legal case concerning other benefits. Last year, High Court judges said a scheme - which allows money to be taken from people claiming benefits to pay energy bills - was unlawful if the claimant had not been consulted first.
But the ruling did not cover people on Universal Credit and BBC News has found thousands are still having money taken. The government says the policy is fair.
It said the scheme protected people from the potential "serious consequences" if bills were not paid - including homelessness, disconnection, court action and ultimately imprisonment. But critics say it is unfair.

Air pollution linked to rise in antibiotic resistance that imperils human health
Air pollution is helping to drive a rise in antibiotic resistance that poses a significant threat to human health worldwide, a global study suggests.
The analysis, using data from more than 100 countries spanning nearly two decades, indicates that increased air pollution is linked with rising antibiotic resistance across every country and continent. It also suggests the link between the two has strengthened over time, with increases in air pollution levels coinciding with larger rises in antibiotic resistance. “Our analysis presents strong evidence that increasing levels of air pollution are associated with increased risk of antibiotic resistance,” researchers from China and the UK wrote. “This analysis is the first to show how air pollution affects antibiotic resistance globally.” Their findings are published in the Lancet Planetary Health journal. Antibiotic resistance is one of the fastest-growing threats to global health. It can affect people of any age in any country and is already killing 1.3 million people a year, according to estimates.

Publicly owned energy company launched in Wales
I Stated at the start of the video that it was from the BBC and it is not, The News is from Sky News!
A new, publicly owned energy company has been launched by the Welsh government. The company is part of the Labour government's co-operation agreement with Plaid Cymru. Ynni Cymru will be based at the M-Sparc site on Anglesey and aims to expand community-owned renewable energy initiatives. Sir Keir Starmer announced in June that Great British Energy - a clean energy company - would be established in the first year of a Labour government in Westminster, with its base in Scotland. The Welsh government has announced £750,000 has been allocated for a total of 11 projects. The payments will be made in the form of grants over the next three years. The Welsh Conservatives have said more should be done to remove barriers to privately owned schemes. Climate change minister, Julie James, and Plaid Cymru's designated member, Siân Gwenllian, visited the Anafon Hydro project in Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd.

Ministers consider sending migrants to Ascension Island in ‘Plan B’ if Rwanda scheme fails
A Home Office minister has said the Government is still “confident” its plan to send illegal migrants to Rwanda will work, despite reports it is considering reviving a plan to send migrants to a remote island in the South Atlantic.
Ministers are said to be reconsidering moving migrants to Ascension Island, a remote British Overseas Territory 4,000 miles from the UK, before a permanent destination for them is found, according to The Times and Daily Mail. The plan was previously considered by Priti Patel, Suella Braverman’s predecessor as Home Secretary.

Local Mega-Publisher National World Sees Staff ‘Pushed to Brink’ Amid Cuts
Local Mega-Publisher National World Sees Staff ‘Pushed to Brink’ Amid Cuts and ‘Right-Wing Shift’ – While Journalists Could Be Replaced by ChatGPT
National World, the huge publisher behind regional titles including the Yorkshire Post, The Scotsman and the national title of the same name, has been accused of driving huge numbers of staff to quit as it mulls plans to use Artificial Intelligence to write news. Former journalists and employees have raised concerns about the company’s editorial direction towards “clickbait”, increased use of AI, and the growing influence of 74-year-old chairman David Montgomery – leading to a wave of departures, cuts and plummeting staff morale. Sources within the company reveal that National World has undergone a sharp editorial shift towards low-quality “churnalism” and culture war issues to drive up traffic over the past six months.
One former journalist there stated the “sudden” changes bosses have implemented have been “nauseating”. The company’s alleged new focus on sensationalism and divisive stories to garner higher traffic has caused concern among employees and the National Union of Journalists about the company’s credibility and direction.

Government ‘cooking the books’ to cut asylum backlog as thousands of claims removed from system
Rishi Sunak has been accused of “cooking the books” as thousands of asylum claims are removed from the system following his vow to clear a historic backlog by the end of this year. More than 6,000 people have been wiped off the list without being fully assessed in just three months, for reasons such as failing to attend interviews or appointments, and not filling in new “fast-track” questionnaires. The figures have quadrupled since the prime minister pledged in December to clear the pre-June 2022 asylum backlog. The government is now withdrawing more claims than it decides, sparking accusations the backlog is being cut “by the back door”.
Official guidance seen by The Independent states that applications can be withdrawn by the Home Office without the asylum seeker’s consent – even if it has been unable to contact them and does not know where they are, with a notification letter “served to file only”. Once removed from the system, people are ineligible for the housing and financial support offered to destitute asylum seekers, with a Tory MP warning they can then “disappear without a trace”.

GB News Politicians' shows under scrutiny in new Ofcom investigations
Media regulator Ofcom has launched four new investigations into GB News after complaints that the channel broke impartiality rules. Three episodes of shows hosted by Conservative MPs are being investigated in relation to a rule that politicians can't normally act as news presenters. Programmes hosted by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, Philip Davies and Esther McVey are among those being examined. It takes the number of active Ofcom investigations into GB News to seven. The UK media watchdog has a rule that prevents politicians from acting as newsreaders, interviewers or reporters in news programmes "unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified". However, some news networks have argued their programmes hosted by politicians do not break the rules because they should be classed as current affairs rather than news. In June, Ofcom commissioned research into public attitudes towards such programmes to decide whether the rules should change.

'A betrayal' White men who missed out on dream jobs with the RAF allege discrimination
Childhood dreams of becoming a pilot in the Royal Air Force ended in rejection for two white men in their 20s, who described a sluggish recruitment process of delays and disinterest. The mother of a third white male candidate recalled how her son tried his best to become a drone pilot, only to fail and apparently not receive a clear reason why. A career as a pilot is hugely competitive, with many more candidates than training slots.
The RAF says it recruits on merit and only selects the best, meaning a lot of highly competent applicants are rejected each year. However, an admission in June that the air force had discriminated against white male recruits in the two years to March 2021 - even though the 161 confirmed cases involved other ranks, not pilots - has left others wondering if they were victims of discrimination too.

Dan Wootton and Martin Branning – The Proof
GB News star Dan Wootton twice used an identical password as the catfishing pseudonyms ‘Martin Branning’ and ‘Maria Joseph’ to subscribe to a movie-sharing website, Byline Times can reveal. The presenter used the password along with the email addresses for his private web domain danwootton.com and also his official News of the World account. They were leaked and published on a publicly-available data breach directory in October 2018. Alongside Wootton’s two email addresses revealed in a dump of log-in details for 743,280 users of the defunct film-indexing service ‘MyDVD.overhere.com’ were the email addresses Byline Times revealed ‘Branning’ and ‘Joseph’ had used to trick and bribe scores of men into sharing compromising sexual material over at least a 10-year period.
All four of the accounts used the same unusual eight-character password. To protect Wootton’s privacy, this newspaper is not publishing the password – which his new representatives today appeared to confirm was indeed used by the journalist.

Cancer patients and long term ill at risk of repossession as government support falls short
Cancer patients and people with long-term illnesses are among those at risk of losing their home as government support for mortgages fails to keep up with rising interest rates. Over 200,000 low-income households received government help with their mortgage payments at the height of the 2008 financial crisis but this figure has plummeted to less than 12,000 today as homeowners find themselves squeezed by soaring interest rates and the support being offered to those 12,000 is falling far short in many cases, with the Government providing loans based on interest rates of 2.65 per cent, which is significantly less than many mortgage holders are now paying.

Brussels tells EU states Ignore UK on post Brexit trade
The EU has slapped down the UK government after it attempted to bypass Brussels on post-Brexit trade rules. Documents obtained by The Independent show that the European Commission was unhappy after British officials asked each member state directly about their plans to cope with new checks on goods coming into the UK. At one point, the commission told countries in the bloc to ignore the UK government completely. It then sent a memo telling member states to provide only “short general information” because of the “problematic” nature of the British request. The commission later warned the UK that contacting each country directly was “outside” the terms of Boris Johnson’s Brexit trade deal – saying it was of “significant concern” since a proper response to British queries should be “harmonised at EU level”.
The rebuke emerged as Rishi Sunak’s government came under pressure from both the EU and British business bosses to spell out exactly how the latest controls on imports, due to come into force in October, will work.

AI weapons pose risk to future of humanity and should be banned, expert dossier warns
Advanced artificial intelligence should be banned from the UK’s weapons arsenal as it poses an “unfathomable risk” to our species, could turn against its human operators and kill civilians indiscriminately, parliament has been warned. In a chilling six-page dossier to a House of Lords committee, an expert contributor granted anonymity says the “breathtaking” speed of AI technology poses a major threat to human life, particularly in the defence industry. The use of AI in defence “presents significant dangers to the future of human security and is fundamentally immoral”, the witness says.

Westminster Accounts: Powerful group of Tory MPs scrutinised by expenses watchdog.
A powerful group of northern Tory MPs are being scrutinised by the parliamentary expenses watchdog after a Sky News investigation into the way they use public money. The investigation found nearly two dozen MPs received political donations from a private donor to help them with campaigning - weeks after they joined the Northern Research Group (NRG) and authorised thousands of pounds of taxpayer-funded expenses to be spent on its work. This raises questions about whether MPs authorised public funding to be spent on the NRG because they knew they would be rewarded with a campaign donation.

We need more EU workers, admits leading Tory Brexiter
A leading Tory Brexiter on Sunday calls on ministers to reopen the UK’s borders to tens of thousands of young workers from EU nations in order to tackle acute post-Brexit labour shortages that he says are driving up inflation. In an extraordinary admission of the failures of immigration policy since the UK left the EU, former Tory environment secretary George Eustice said Rishi Sunak’s government should begin bilateral negotiations with EU nations immediately, with a view to offering young Europeans under 35 the right to two- year visas to work in this country. Eustice, who was secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs under Boris Johnson, said the deals should be reciprocal so that young UK citizens under 35 would be able to live and work for two years in the same EU member states with which deals were struck. This, he said, would be part of a much-needed “post-Brexit reconciliation” with our European neighbours.

Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives are not trusted by the British public to keep the NHS free to use, according to an exclusive new poll for Byline Times.
Ahead of the 75th anniversary of the NHS this week, Sunak promised to ensure that it would always be “there for you, whenever and wherever you need it”. He also insisted that he has “no plans” to introduce any new charges to use the National Health Service. However, our new poll found that most Brits simply do not believe him. According to the new survey by pollsters Omnisis, six-in-ten voters (59%) do not believe the Conservative party will keep NHS services free at the point of delivery.
This compares to just 23% of voters who do trust the party to keep the National Health Service free-to-use.

Saudi Arabia is preparing to host a summit to discuss Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan for peace in his country amid the ongoing Russian invasion, according to a senior official in Kyiv. Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, said on Sunday that officials from several countries would take part in the Saudi Arabian summit but did not say when or in which city the meeting will be held.

Explosions occurred in Moscow, Bryansk, and Rostov regions in Russia, and the Chonhar bridge in occupied Crimea was hit, while Russian attacks took at least five civilian lives in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Donetsk regions. The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) continued offensive operations on at least three sectors of the front and made claimed advances in some areas, ISW reported. Ukrainian military sources claimed small successes on the southern flank of Bakhmut and gradual advances in the Berdyansk (western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhzhia regional boundary area) and Melitopol (in western Zaporizhzhia region) axes.

The Wagner Group claimed on July 30 that it had "indefinitely" suspended recruitment of new members as it possesses sufficiently "large personnel reserves." "Due to the presence of large personnel reserves in the Wagner private military company (PMC), there is currently no need to recruit new members," the Wagner Group's press service wrote on its Telegram channel. "The work of the regional recruitment centers of the Wagner PMC is suspended indefinitely."

Trump could be indicted soon in Georgia Here’s a look at that investigation!
A Georgia prosecutor is expected to seek a grand jury indictment in the coming weeks in her investigation into efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the former president’s 2020 election loss.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis began investigating more than two years ago, shortly after a recording was released of a January 2021 phone call Trump made to Georgia’s secretary of state. Willis has strongly hinted that any indictment would come between July 31 and August 18. One of two grand juries seated July 11 is expected to hear the case.
If Trump is indicted by a Georgia grand jury, it would add to a growing list of legal troubles as he campaigns for president. Trump is set to go to trial in New York in March to face state charges related to hush-money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign. And he has another trial scheduled for May on federal charges related to his handling of classified documents. He has pleaded not guilty in those cases.
The Justice Department is also investigating Trump’s role in trying to halt the certification of 2020 election results in the run-up to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Trump said he’s been told he’s a target of that investigation, which likely has some overlap with the one in Georgia.

Tories Hit with Council of Europe Rebuke Over Charging Journalists to Cover Party Conference
The Council of Europe has issued a damning rebuke of the Conservatives charging journalists at least £137 to attend its conference this autumn.
The party sparked a row over press freedom after introducing fees for each journalist’s application. The Council of Europe – the pan-European body of which the European Court of Human Rights is a part – has now issued a “media freedom warning”, noting that the policy “sets a deeply concerning precedent in a democratic society”. In a statement, the Council of Europe – of which the UK is a member – pointed to the “ruling Conservative Party” sparking anger from “journalists and outlets from across the world”.
The News Media Society, the Society of Editors and the Foreign Press Association are among around 300 reporters and organisations to protest the fees, saying that it is “wrong in principle, a serious media freedom issue and a barrier to open democracy”.

Thousands of children in England facing ‘heartbreaking’ waits for NHS dental care
Thousands of children in England are experiencing “heartbreaking” long waits for NHS dental care, with some waiting “in agony” for years to have teeth extracted, according to shocking new figures. Health leaders and MPs warned of a “perfect storm” in which children are struggling to access dentists to nip minor issues “in the bud”, and then facing horrific waiting times for operations to fix problems that have spiralled out of control.
Data obtained under freedom of information laws and reviewed by the Guardian show children in some parts of England are waiting up to 18 months on average for dental procedures under general anaesthetic, principally tooth extractions. Some have waited several years.
About 27,000 children were on waiting lists for specialist dental care, assessments or procedures in January, according to the figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats from the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA).
