Opaque think tanks, landlords and the arms industry dominate Tory conference
Opaquely-funded think tanks, lobby groups, the arms and tobacco industries and fossil fuel firms were front and centre at this year’s Conservative Party Conference, hosting panel conversations and events with some of the most senior party figures. Rishi Sunak and cabinet ministers set out their vision for the future in Manchester, at what was likely the last party conference before a general election. But outside of the main hall, corporate sponsorship ran wild. Business leaders – including representatives from gambling and social media companies – paid up to £3,300 to dine with ministers in charge of key policy decisions, with no record of what was discussed. Policy Exchange, a think tank that does not disclose its funders and has a track record of influencing government policy, hosted a range of events.

Police Investigating Dan Wootton Over Allegations of 10 Year Catfishing Campaign
GB News’ scandal-hit star presenter Dan Wootton is tonight at the centre of a Metropolitan Police probe after a three-year investigation by Byline Times, it can be exclusively revealed. Detectives from the Complex Investigation Team of the force’s Central Specialist Crime division are looking into serious allegations relating to the obtaining of sexual images by deception and blackmail. A Met Police spokesperson told this newspaper: “In June 2023, the Metropolitan Police was contacted with regards to allegations of sexual offences committed by a man aged in his 40s. “Officers assessed all information available to establish whether any criminal offence has taken place. We can confirm that an investigation has now commenced into these allegations. “Detectives will continue to liaise with the complainant to establish the circumstances. There has been no arrest and enquiries continue.” Byline Times’ journalists handed a 28-page dossier of evidence to the Met Police on 20 June. On 12 July, criminal claims started to emerge on social media, with posts rapidly attracting more than 18 million views. On 27 July, Byline Times started publishing a series of stories examining 40-year-old New Zealander Wootton’s personal and professional conduct.

Top Just Stop Oil donor Dale Vince pulls cash and says more protests are 'pointless'
One of Just Stop Oil's top donors has announced he will stop funding the eco-group and will instead focus on an anti-Conservative campaign.
Dale Vince, who has donated to both climate activists and Labour, said continued disruption was "pointless" as the government will not change its stance on oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. The Ecotricity founder said he will divert his efforts to a new cause called Just Vote, which encourages young people and first-time voters to exercise their democratic right.
In a statement, Mr Vince said: "It's a fact of our electoral system that only one of two parties can form the next government; we want to bring a focus to this reality and to the opportunity that we have - to elect a green government, one that will embrace the opportunities we face, rather than make an enemy of them - and use them to tackle the long list of issues we face as a country."

Young inexperienced prison officers at risk of ‘grooming’ from most dangerous criminals
Nearly a third of officers at high-security prisons have fewer than three years of experience, official figures show, fuelling concerns about safety and “grooming” of staff by the most dangerous criminals in the country.
As of June 2023, a total of 2,993 (31 per cent) prison officers had not been in their jobs longer than 36 months – up from just 236 (6 per cent) in June 2015, according to Ministry of Justice data. Experts warned that newer recruits who require more support, training and mentoring were at “very real risk” of being groomed by “experienced” inmates, presenting new dangers in already “overstretched” prisons. A union representing prison officers said the figures were reflective of the staffing “crisis” across the sector, with Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) losing staff “hand over fist”.

The British Museum Begs for Help Over 2,000 Lost Treasures!
As the British Museum asks the public and experts to help recover stolen artefacts, Byline Times questions just how transparent the museum has been in the past to such matters of concern. In a Freedom of Information (FOI) request in 2022, asking for information on the number of reported thefts and attempted thefts the British Museum had had over the past 10 years, the British Museum admitted only one “reported thefts of museum property relate(d) to an object from the British Museum collection.” “This was a British Iron Age gold coin from the Epping Upland hoard,” the British Museum stated, “which was one of three coins which were stolen from Epping Forest Museum during the financial year 2011/12 whilst on loan from the British Museum.”

Single use plastic ban comes into force in England with plastic cutlery and plates off the table
A ban on single-use plastic plates and cutlery and certain types of polystyrene cups and containers came into force in England on Sunday.
It follows a similar move by Scotland last year, while a ban in Wales comes in later this month. The ban also includes single-use plastic trays, bowls and balloon sticks, with the Westminster government stated aim one of reducing plastic pollution. Bally Singh, who runs Hooked Fish and Chips in west London, is having to swap from polystyrene to cardboard containers and cups at a cost of nearly £1,000 a year. He said: "I agree with the change, we need to be more sustainable in regard to our planet but it is a lot for us, a small business.

One in six species at risk of extinction in Great Britain, say wildlife experts
One in six species is at risk of being lost in Great Britain, according to a comprehensive analysis by leading wildlife scientists. Bird species such as turtle doves had the most worrying results in the report, with 43% at risk of extinction, but other much loved creatures such as the hazel dormouse, the lady’s slipper orchid and the european eel also now face an uncertain future. The report argues that this is largely a result of human activities such as causing habitat loss, accelerating diseases such as avian flu via factory farming, and burning fossil fuels, which has altered the climate. The State of Nature report, published on Wednesday, features work from 60 research and conservation organisations based on data from monitoring schemes and biological recording centres, to provide a benchmark for the status of the UK’s wildlife. Previous editions were published in 2013, 2016 and 2019.
On Thursday, environment groups including the Wildlife Trusts, Greenpeace, Butterfly Conservation and Plantlife will be protesting outside the government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, calling for greater protections for the natural world.

New Brexit checks to cost UK business £330m a year
New post-Brexit border checks set to come into force in 2024 will cost UK companies at least £330m a year, Rishi Sunak’s government has admitted.
Additional red tape on food, animal and plant products imported from the EU had been due to be phased in from October – but was pushed back amid fears the extra costs will add to inflation. A Tory Cabinet Office minister revealed the expected annual cost in an answer to a senior Labour MP, following warnings from industry it will push up prices and drive some small firms out of business. Baroness Lucy Neville-Rolfe said: “It will depend greatly on how businesses adapt their business models and supply chains to integrate the new controls regimes.” “We estimate these new costs of the model at £330mn p.a [per annum] overall, across all EU imports,” she wrote in the letter to Stella Creasy, chair of the Labour Movement for Europe.

Major UK retail bosses plead for staff protection as ‘violent criminals empty stores’
Almost 90 retail leaders, including the bosses of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Boots and WH Smith, have written to the government demanding action on rising retail crime, in which violent criminals are “emptying stores”. The retailers, who also include the bosses of Aldi, Primark and Superdrug, call for the creation of a new UK-wide aggravated offence of assaulting or abusing a retail worker – as already exists in Scotland – which would carry tougher sentences and require police to record all incidents of retail crime and allow the allocation of more resources. “The police consistently tell us that a lack of data about these offences means they have no visibility about the nature or scale of the issue,” the letter says. The 88 retail bosses have asked for a meeting with the home secretary, Suella Braverman, to discuss the issue after a meeting with the minister for crime, Chris Philp, led to the promise to develop an action plan. The call comes after retailers, including the Co-op and John Lewis, highlighted what they said was a worsening issue. A survey of members of the British Retail Consortium (BRC), which represents all the major chains, found levels of shoplifting in 10 of the biggest cities had risen by an average of 27% this year.

Families to protest at Covid Inquiry over ‘whitewash’ fears
The Covid Inquiry risks turning into a “whitewash” because it is not taking oral evidence from enough people whose loved ones died from the virus, bereaved families have claimed. Baroness Hallett is to investigate whether Boris Johnson took too long to place the UK into lockdown, which some families claim allowed the virus to spread unchecked and kill more people.
A barrister representing 7,000 members of the Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK campaign group is to give an opening statement when the second stage of the inquiry starts this week. Lady Hallett will also hear from four individuals, one from each nation of the UK, who lost loved ones to Covid.

Autumn heat continues in Europe after record breaking September
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and Switzerland have all experienced their hottest Septembers on record, with unseasonably high temperatures set to continue into October, in a year likely to be the warmest in human history. As 31C (88F) was forecast in south-west France on Sunday and 28C in Paris, the French weather authority, Météo-France, said September’s average temperature was 21.5C, between 3.5C and 3.6C above the norm for the 1991-2020 reference period. That made it the hottest September – by more than 1C – since records began in 1900, the meteorologist Christine Berne said, adding that in several regions, the deviation from the September average of the past three decades had exceeded 4C, sometimes 6C.

AI firms are unleashing a force even they don’t understand, Michelle Donelan warns
Artificial intelligence poses future dangers because even its creators do not understand how it works, the Science and Technology Secretary has warned.
Michelle Donelan cautioned that AI may allow terrorists to develop dangerous new bio-weapons and cripple key infrastructure with cyber attacks. And she revealed that the upcoming AI safety summit hosted in Britain with dozens of world leaders attending would focus in parallel on the twin risks of misuse by bad actors and the technology running out of control and threatening humanity’s future.

Voter ID, Big Party Bungs, and Payouts to Shamed MPs Would Be Scrapped Under Lib Dem Plans
The Liberal Democrats have backed plans to cap political donations to £10,000, scrap big payoffs for disgraced ministers, and abolish mandatory voter ID rules. The party has become the first to adopt a “pre-manifesto” for the next election, with proposals to give everyone the right to see a GP within a week as their centre-piece policy. The pre-manifesto document, which was voted on and approved by party members at its Autumn Conference in Bournemouth, sets out an early draft of the party’s manifesto for the next General Election. They’ve also set out their proposals for overhauling democracy, after a slew of scandals over the past decade – from lobbying to cronyism and tainted House of Lords appointments. Many of the scandals were triggered by donations to MPs or parties, with donors subsequently landing Government contracts or positions. Last week, the Mirror reported that a Conservative party donor whose company was awarded £160 million worth of PPE contracts has been appointed to a senior Government role on the Board of Trade. David Meller, a former chairman of the scandal-hit Presidents Club, has donated almost £70,000 to the Conservative Party and its politicians since 2009.

US surveillance firm’s charm offensive to UK councils and police forces
AUS tech firm has been privately lobbying UK councils and police forces to scale up their surveillance using an AI-powered platform used against Black Lives Matter protesters in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, openDemocracy can reveal. At least one London council is already trialling the software as a result of approaches by the company, Fusus, which claims to be “the most widely used and trusted real-time crime center platform in US public safety”. Fusus has been attempting to expand into the UK, opening an office in London’s Canary Wharf in March this year and hiring former officers from the Met to approach councils and police forces. It has approached Tower Hamlets and Hackney borough councils and the Met, City of London and Merseyside police forces to sell products that integrate CCTV and surveillance networks, according to Freedom of Information requests.
Kensington and Chelsea Council and Merton Council also confirmed they had also been in contact with Fusus when approached by openDemocracy, with Kensington and Chelsea running a 60-day trial starting earlier this month.

Nissan to go all electric in Britain by 2030 despite Sunak net zero delay
Nissan has vowed to make the switch to all-electric by 2030, despite Rishi Sunak pushing back a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars to 2035.
The Japanese car manufacturer’s chief executive Makoto Uchida said “there is no going back now” as he committed his company to the initial deadline set by the prime minister. Sunak controversially pushed back the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars as part of a watering down of the government’s environmental commitments last Friday.

Newcastle Hospitals says computer error lost patient letters
A hospital trust failed to send out 24,000 letters from senior doctors to patients and their GPs after they became lost in a new computer system, the BBC has learned. Newcastle Hospitals warned the problem, dating back to 2018, is significant. The BBC has been told the problems occurred when letters requiring sign-off from a senior doctor were placed into a folder few staff knew existed. The healthcare regulator has sought urgent assurances over patient safety. Most of the letters explain what should happen when patients are discharged from hospital. But a significant number of the unsent letters are written by specialist clinics spelling out care that is needed for patients. It means that some crucial tests and results may have been missed by patients.Staff have been told to record any resulting incidents of patient harm and ensure these are addressed. Following a routine inspection by the regulator - the Care Quality Commission (CQC) - in the summer, staff at the trust raised concerns about delays in sending out correspondence.

Labour will add 20% VAT to private school fees within first year of winning power
Labour would introduce VAT on private school fees immediately if it wins power, meaning parents could be hit with higher charges as soon as the first academic year after the general election, i can reveal. Senior Labour figures told i the party will end the charitable status of independent schools as soon as possible if it enters No 10, rather than “phasing” it in across several academic years as was previously assumed. Sir Keir Starmer has pledged that a Labour government would strip private schools of their charitable status, which makes them eligible for tax relief and a reduction in business rates.

Global surge in electric vehicles and solar power shines hope on climate target
The surge in clean energy around the world has raised hopes the world may still reach its climate change target, according to the leading energy agency.
Electric vehicles and solar panels have grown at record rates, in line with the pace needed to reach net zero emissions by 2050, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said. Net zero means cutting emissions as much as possible and offsetting the rest, and is seen as key to limiting warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels - a goal of the Paris Agreement. But the IEA said the window for reaching that goal is still shrinking overall, with the growth in these clean technologies propping it open.

Brexit Betrayal, Divergence and Dishonesty - written by Shamik Das
“Can we be brave in the decisions we make, even if there is a political cost? Can we be honest when the facts change, even if it’s awkward? And can we put the long-term interests of our country before the short-term political needs of the moment, even if it means being controversial?” So asked Rishi Sunak in his net zero speech (in which he seemed to answer his rhetorical questions no, no and no) – yet we seem no closer to him or any leading politician starting a speech on the UK’s future relationship with Europe in the same vein, as recent Brexit headlines have once more demonstrated. They have centred on Labour Leader Keir Starmer’s comments about not wanting to diverge from EU rules at a summit of global progressives in Montreal, at which he also talked about putting Britain back on the world stage and showing global leadership. Those interventions sandwiched meetings in The Hague and Paris where he sought to drum home his message with key European leaders, also opening up the possibility of deals on tackling cross-border crime and migration. The response of the Conservatives and press? Not bravery, honesty and long-term thinking – but cries of ‘betrayal’ buttressing imaginative stories about what Labour would do.

Revealed NHS regulator’s ‘culture of fear’ that leaves rogue nurses free to abuse patients
Nurses and midwives accused of serious sexual, physical and racial abuse are being allowed to keep working on wards because Whistleblowers are being ignored, a damning new report has found. Staff are too scared to report their concerns to the nursing regulator because of a ‘culture of fear’ within the watchdog, documents seen by The Independent reveal. One whistleblower, speaking to this publication, drew parallels with the Lucy Letby case, accusing the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of being defensive and trying to protect their own reputations. They claim “deep-seated toxic conduct” within the NMC is leading to skewed and failed investigations. The independent review was launched after The Independent highlighted concerns earlier this year by speaking to staff who complained that the NMC was leaving nurses accused of sexual assault and domestic violence free to work unchecked.

Lib Dems to attack Tories on NHS and pensions triple lock, Ed Davey says
The Liberal Democrats are planning to open two fronts against the Conservatives in their traditional heartlands, with a campaign focused on NHS waiting lists and a pledge to protect the pensions triple lock.
In an interview with the Observer, Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, said that the scale of support his party had been receiving from lifelong Tory voters meant that there was now no Tory seat in either the “blue wall” or the Conservatives’ rural heartlands that was safe. The Lib Dems are in an increasingly optimistic mood as their annual conference takes place this week after a string of byelection wins, including in Chesham and Amersham, and Tiverton and Honiton. There is also mounting concern among Tories in constituencies where the Lib Dems are in second place. Davey’s party is now honing an election campaign designed to win over liberal, pro-remain Tory voters as well as rural communities that have been out of reach to the Lib Dems for years. He said that, unlike in the run-up to previous elections, concern about the NHS and GP waiting times was a “common thread” across all the voters it was targeting.
