Or eight measures. Or four. Or even two.
How do you keep the walking bass line moving over a single chord?
And how do you find correct jazz chord voicings to play on top?
This second lesson of my 4-part series on how to play jazz guitar walking bass lines plus chords at the same time covers how to tackle single chord vamps in jazz progressions.
I love this stuff!

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
One of your fellow guitar students, Sean, recently sent me this comment:
"At some time I would really appreciate a lesson on your hybrid picking technique and how to work on that. It's something I would love to master."
That "some time" is today :)
This week's lesson is on the 7 best hybrid picking exercises for guitar.
Hybrid picking is the technique where we use a pick and our fingers at the same time.
If you want to:
• Seamlessly switch between finger-picking and pick picking,
• Play chords without strumming them while holding a pick,
• Or speed up your lead playing by alternating between the pick and your fingers
Then these hybrid picking exercises will help you get there.
(And they work equally well if you’re doing hybrid picking on electric or acoustic.)
PS. Yes, I read and reply to all comments and emails. If there's something you'd like to see a lesson on don't hesitate to let me know. :)

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
A few years ago I wrote and recorded guitar parts in a songwriting session with Macklemore. Intentions is the name of the song that I played on.
In this week's lesson about the process of guitar songwriting in a professional studio setting I share about:
• How I got the opportunity to play with Macklemore on “Intentions”
• What the experience was like working with Macklemore
• And then—to show you what kind of guitar songwriting knowledge was needed in a professional studio session like that—I teach the actual guitar parts for the song “Intentions” and how I came up with them.
With the clear sheet music, tabs, and chord diagrams in this video, you'll see that it's really pretty simple guitar songwriting theory stuff.
This is a great example of how much of what I teach in my weekly lessons can be used during real music making opportunities.

This week's lesson is about how to best use a free, unique guitar chord chart pdf that I made called "Chords with Color".
I made this chord chart for students who are interested in theory, or songwriting, or being able to play songs in multiple keys, or putting their own spin on cover songs.
And I especially made this free chord chart pdf for finding fresh sounding, colorful chord types that are interchangeable with common every-day chords.
As far as I know there isn't any other guitar chord chart like this out there, which is why I made it, and I really think it's valuable.
In this video I go over four different ways that you can use it.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Okay, I'm not a fan of "hacks" when it comes to guitar soloing.
But I do want to show you a little perspective trick for how we can work on connecting scales when improvising on guitar.
I recently created several lessons on how to map out and practice various types of scales.
But once we learn our scale positions we often find ourselves "stuck" in those shapes when improvising on guitar.
There's a way to get past that, seamlessly connecting scales, when working on guitar soloing.
Which is exactly what I teach and demonstrate in this week's lesson video.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
What do you hear in your head when you slowly read the next line?
"All my troubles seemed so far away."
Yep, it's that emotionally-packed melodic minor scale line from Yesterday by The Beatles.
The powerful effect that comes from this melodic moment stems from the melodic minor scale.
As a continuation of my guitar scale series, this week's scale lesson covers:
• The theory structure of the melodic minor scale
•How Bach and Paul McCartney used the melodic minor scale
•The five melodic minor scale guitar patterns and how to practice them
Have the melodic minor scale guitar shapes mystified you in the past? (They did to me for years!)
If so then this video should help to clarify why this unique and rather odd scale exists and how to use it.

HARMONIC MINOR SCALE Guitar Positions - how to nail them
Harmonic minor scale guitar positions are important to learn if we want to nail soloing over chord changes in minor keys. Some say the harmonic minor scale is the 2nd most important scale.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
What's the most important scale to learn for improvising?
That's right, the major scale.
What's the second most important scale to learn for improvising?
Well, some would say it's the harmonic minor scale.
That might be surprising because we usually don't think of the harmonic minor scale as very useful until we really understand its application.
In a minor key, when the V chord is major (or dominant 7), it's coming from the harmonic minor scale.
That means that if we want to NAIL that V chord when improvising over it on the guitar, then we want to use the harmonic minor scale.
And that type of V chord is in nearly every minor key song!
It's also in TONS of major key songs (via minor chords getting "tonicized")
So yeah, harmonic minor is a handy (and necessary) scale to learn for nailing changes when improvising on the guitar.
This week's lesson is a continuation of my scale mapping series and it's all about how to thoroughly learn the harmonic minor scale guitar positions.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Over the last three weeks I've been hyping up how beneficial it is to study common chord progressions.
My last few lessons covered twenty common progressions!
In today's lesson I cover how to take any of those chord progressions and manipulate them to find even more popular chord combinations.
This is powerful. With chord progression variations the options are seemingly ENDLESS.
Now we can get creative with every-day chord progressions and make them our own, just like many of our favorite artists do.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In my last two lesson videos I covered twelve of the most common chord progressions.
Understanding the theory of common chord progressions helps us:
1. learn songs and progressions faster,
2. remember chord progressions longer,
3. and write our own progressions with ease.
This third lesson of my four-lesson mini-series covers eight more of the most common progressions.
These are progressions that include four chords or more.
I bet you'll recognize most of these right away!

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This week's video lesson is the second of a four-lesson mini-series about the most common chord progressions.
When learning how to play common chord progressions in any key:
1. you're practicing thousands (if not millions) of songs at once,
2. you're helping your ear get used to common sounds so you can recognize them when they come up in songs,
3. and you're internalizing the music theory of how chord progressions work together.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Ever wondered how professional musicians can learn the chord progressions of 40 new songs in a week for an upcoming gig?
Or how piano bar performers can take requests from a pool of literally thousands of tunes?
It takes a variety of skills to pull those things off, but one of the most important is being familiar with common chord progressions.
This week's video lesson is the first of a four-lesson mini-series on the most common chord progressions and how to think of them on the guitar in various keys.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Last week I published a lesson on how to get the blues scale down all over the guitar using a unique approach for where to place the blues notes.
What we usually just call the "blues scale" can also be called the minor blues scale.
So what about the major blues scale?
Well, the major blues scale is just a mode of the minor blues scale.
By targeting the root of the scale in a certain way you can get a very different sound.
The major blues scale sounds a little more country or bluegrass than the "normal" blues scale.
Hear how different it sounds for yourself by checking out this lesson.
And I hope you'll give the exercise a shot in your next practice session. :)

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Oh how the blues scale sounds so good on the guitar!
Even just playing this scale up and down sounds impressively melodic.
And when applied to the blues scale, my go-to, root-targeting guitar scale exercise takes things to a new level.
This is a unique way of practicing the blues scale on the guitar that you may have never seen before.
The reason we stick to that one common blues scale guitar shape is because it's hard to know where to place the "blues notes" in the other positions.
Check out my solution to this problem. It sounds awesome and totally gets the blues scale mapped out once and for all.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
I'm continuing my series for learning all five scale positions of each scale type.
Of course no scale lesson series on mapping out scale shapes would be complete without the minor pentatonic scale guitar positions.
The method I use for mapping out scales is maybe needed most of all for the minor pentatonic scale.
That's because we all know the ONE shape.
And maybe we venture over and grab a few notes from the surrounding positions sometimes.
But what about the other four guitar positions? Even if we know them, how well?
I encourage you to take a couple minutes next time you're practicing the guitar to play through ALL FIVE positions of the minor pentatonic scale using the method I demonstrate in this lesson.
I promise it feels grounding and helpful—it does for me anyway. Even after playing these shapes for years.
The minor pentatonic scale guitar positions can be SO fun to play with if we know all five of them. I hope you’ll play around with some of the pentatonic positions that you’re less familiar with after this and get a jolt of inspiration.

Lesson Description:
I'm continuing a series about mapping out all the guitar positions of various scale types using an exercise I call the Root to Root Method.
This week's lesson is on the five major pentatonic scale guitar positions.
Some say that the pentatonic scale is the tastiest scale out there, but it's also often neglected.
It's easy to learn one scale position shape and move it around on the neck.
But sometimes we go years without filling in those blank areas on the fretboard where we know "good" notes exist.
Check out how simple this scale position exercise is, and how good it sounds.
I hope it inspires you to fill in some of those "blank spots" and that it leads you into some fun major pentatonic scale jams. :)

My website: https://www.soundguitarlessons.com/
I went a long time before thoroughly learning these five major pentatonic scale guitar positions. It always bothered me that I didn’t have them mapped out. I knew the minor pentatonic scale much better. Once I used the root to root method I could finally see the major pentatonic scale positions as their own entity and it was very freeing. I hope the same for you.

Lesson Description:
My lesson last week introduced a guitar scale exercise I call the Root to Root Method.
This method of practicing scales is extremely useful for seeing where roots are located within guitar scale patterns and for being able to hear the true quality of a scale.
This approach might seem simple and rudimentary—because it is—which is exactly why it's so effective.
To demonstrate just how powerful the Root to Root Method is for hearing and mapping out scales, this week's lesson walks through the same process but with the natural minor scale guitar patterns.
Listen to how the same shapes as the major scales transform into sounding completely different just by treating them as the minor scale.

Because the minor scale guitar patterns are the EXACT SAME physical shapes as major scale, the only thing actually making them minor is how we treat the root. And yep, that is exactly what a scale mode is, which means that the natural minor scale and the major scale are modes of each other. Practicing them with this exercise is how to finally hear and see them as unique scale types instead of just a bunch of notes grouped together on the fretboard. I still practice my scales like this all the time and I hope you’ll start to as well.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
How well do you know the five major scale guitar patterns?
Do you know them equally well or do you jump to some scale patterns more than others?
Most importantly, can you clearly see where all the roots are within each of the guitar patterns? Knowing where the roots are within major scale forms is everything.
Seeing the roots clearly allows us to actually treat a major scale pattern as minor (or another mode), and helps us to track where we are in a key.
Needless to say this is invaluable for improvising, composing, and learning new music faster.
I have a super simple and effective way to practice all five major scale patterns on the guitar to get them down once and for all by targeting the roots in a specific way.
And that’s what this lesson is all about.

This is the first lesson in a new series for how to map out and finally learn all five guitar scale patterns of various scale types. I know that some people have been playing guitar for a long time and still don’t have these five major scale guitar patterns totally down, or they know them but don’t see where the roots are clearly enough to take advantage of using them to their full potential. Stay tuned for more scale types coming up and use the link at the top of the description to go to playlist that includes all of these scale shape lessons.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This week's lesson is a thorough introduction on how to arrange chord melodies on the guitar using a three step process. Chord melody is one of the coolest yet most elusive guitar techniques out there. To pull it off we have to harmonize nearly every note of a melody with a supporting chord shape. I've broken the process down into three steps, and it works on jazz, folk, or pop songs alike. I walk through those three steps using the Happy Birthday melody, and then again using the jazz standard Blue Bossa. Everything is written out with notation and TABS so you can follow along and try it for yourself. Once you can arrange chord melodies for yourself it will feel like a super power :) I hope you enjoy!

I hope this chord melody guitar lesson helps to demystify what it takes to make chord melodies from scratch. Obviously knowing inversion shapes is a huge help in working out chord melodies on the fretboard, so I may be doing some videos in the future specifically on mapping out inversions all over the guitar. Let me know if there are any chord melodies that you’re working on after watching this video. :)

Lesson Description:
This week's lesson is a comprehensive guide to quartal harmony and quartal chords on the guitar. Quartal harmony is one of my favorite sounds and this is my favorite lesson I've made so far—I'm really proud of it! I explain what quartal harmony is, how to use quartal voicings in the context of modal harmony, how to use them over normal chords, how Miles Davis used modal harmony and quartal harmony, and more! My favorite part is at the end when I show how to harmonize the minor pentatonic scale with quartal chord shape inversions. They sound completely unique and amazing! As usual there are plenty of examples, practice suggestions, and clear diagrams so you can hear and see what's going on, & so you can practice the awesome sound of quartal harmony for yourself. :)

Quartal harmony can either sound really weird and off putting, or completely refreshing. Personally I find it to perfectly hit the spot after a stretch of playing or listening to mainstream music or music that uses functional harmony. What I love about quartal harmony and quartal chords is how they can actually be used in the context of normal songs and not only in the context of modal harmony or modal jazz.

Lesson Description:
This week's lesson is all about functional harmony. What it is, how it works, and how we can use it. Learning functional harmony is super useful for finding chord substitutions when writing progressions or jamming. And I know studying music can feel a little dry and academic at times, so I included a little humor that anyone who's tried writing lyrics might relate to. In this lesson I write a song with a basic chord progression and then use functional harmony to replace each chord with a chord substitution.

Even though functional harmony isn’t the prevailing method for creating music these days, it’s still helpful to know about and understand, especially for seeing how chords overlap and behave similarly so we can find chord substitutions when songwriting or jamming.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Rootless voicings are super fun and understanding them can majorly broaden how we view the fretboard. Several application examples and plenty of easy-to-follow diagrams are included so you can clearly see and hear what's going on. I talk about rootless jazz chords as well as how rootless chord voicings can be used in the context of songwriting in more of a pop style. In one example you'll see how one single chord shape can be used as FIVE different chords. I hope you enjoy and have a lovely week full of creativity.
