LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is the fourth video in a big series about mapping out and practicing arpeggio guitar shapes so we can sound amazing when playing over any chord by improvising around chordal tones.
This week we're going over the five steps it takes to solo over Dominant 7 chords with complete creative control and confidence.
Each lesson in this series focuses on a different chord type and teaches you five positions of that chord's arpeggio shapes so you can improvise around chordal tones anywhere on the guitar.
• This is essential for lead guitar soloing (especially in jazz).
• It's great for technique.
• It's important for music theory clarity on the fretboard.
• And it's fantastic for composing melodies over chord progressions.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Today I'm starting a new free lesson series about improvising with chordal tones that I think you might like.
The best way to improvise confidently and creatively over any chord type is by knowing where the chordal tones are.
And I mean really knowing them so that at any moment we can choose to target or avoid the actual notes of the chord we're on.
No matter what we want to sound like stylistically we must see arpeggio guitar shapes and chordal tones on the fretboard with absolute clarity.
Sounds great right? But how do we get to that point?
We practice melodic arpeggio guitar shapes.
And we practice those arpeggio shapes with a series of specific steps and exercises to get us improvising with them right away.
That's what my new chordal tone mapping lesson series is all about.
In this series I'm teaching how to work on the arpeggio guitar shapes of the twelve chord types needed to improvise over any progression.
If soloing over chord changes is one of your goals then I'm confident that this series will help you.
This first lesson in the series is on the major triad.
Don't worry, we'll get to all those crazy chords later too, but sounding great on a major triad is an important first step :)

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Are you interested in more than one sound or style on the guitar?
Me too.
Are you interested in pursuing whatever helps you gain creative control over the instrument so you can better express yourself in the moment?
Me too.
As someone who has played classical guitar professionally for many years, but also answers yes to both of those questions, I have two observations:
1. Studying classical guitar helps immensely with any and all other styles of guitar playing and music goals.
2. The culture around classical guitar can be quite exclusionary, with little tolerance for doing things differently or studying other styles, leaving hardly any room for individuality.
I really don't like talking about myself in my videos—I want the lessons to be about you.
But in this 2nd video of my series on playing classical guitar without nails I talk about my multiple musical interests in order to explain why I switched from playing with nails for nearly two decades to now playing classical guitar without nails, and with my fingertips instead.
I also explore why some classical guitarists today find it completely unacceptable to play without nails, and we'll dig into some guitar history to try and figure that out.
It gets a little vulnerable because I can't help but to try and acknowledge the deeper reasons for why any of us are compelled to play any kind of music in the first place.
I hope you find it helpful, interesting, and inspiring :)

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Hello there my guitarist friend! I hope you're having a great week so far. :)
A few videos ago I explained the theory of the altered scale and showed how to work on practicing altered scales all over the guitar.
It's always a great idea to practice improvising in every position when learning a new scale type (which I demonstrated with the five altered scale forms in that video).
But to go from being able to improvise with a single scale type to being able to switch to it in the middle of playing real music is a HUGE challenge.
It's the next natural step to work towards, but it's not at all an easy step.
Practicing the altered scale is a great example of this because it's usually only appropriate to use it in real chord progressions for a measure or so at a time—that’s how altered chords tend to show up.
In this lesson I teach a few specific ways to work on switching scales mid-playing.
I demonstrate these exercises using the altered scale—with some clear graphics so you can follow along—but the same approach works for any key and scale changes that you might need to navigate while improvising.
I hope you find it helpful and inspiring.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Did you know that playing classical guitar without nails used to be common?
Some very famous players would play classical guitar by plucking the strings with the flesh of their fingertips, without nails.
"Wait... I thought you HAVE to use nails to play classical guitar?"
Today, if someone goes online and asks about the possibility of playing classical guitar without nails they practically get laughed out of message boards.
So what happened?!?!
This week's video lesson is part 1 of a new, four-lesson mini-series all about playing classical guitar without nails.
Think of this series as "rant meets video essay" :)
In this first episode I'll talk all about the history of playing classical guitar without nails, and I'll also perform a piece without nails so you can hear how it sounds.
No matter what your guitar goals are, studying some amount of classical guitar is amazingly beneficial, so I hope you check this series out, because it might be really helpful for you.

Classical guitar finger picks... is that allowed?
Can you play classical guitar without nails but still get that natural nail sound by using finger picks?
It may be controversial to even mention the idea of guitar finger picks in the world of classical guitar, but the answer to both of those questions is yes.
This week's lesson is an Alaska Pik review video:
• I'll share with you my experience of using classical guitar finger picks called Alaska Piks exclusively (and in professional settings) for about ten years
• I'll explain and demonstrate the technique for how to use Alaska Piks (it takes some getting used to)
• And I'll perform some music for you so you can hear how finger picks can sound just like nails if you’re careful.
And lastly I'll run down a pros and cons list as a summary about using classical guitar finger picks vs nails

Introducing
Chords on Command
by Jared Borkowski
The ultimate and most practical way to learn guitar chord theory and map out the fretboard
Guitar theory is so often taught without an exciting goal, a clear end-point, or a specific skill you can walk away with feeling good about. Not this time.
No more Googling. No more guessing.
Chords on Command is a complete program for learning how to analyze or create any possible chord on the guitar, from scratch, anywhere on the fretboard.
It's guitar theory with an exciting and practical purpose that anyone can learn.
Crack the code to chords. All of them.
Identify or create any chord:
You'll be able to identify, or design from scratch, literally any chord, anywhere on the guitar, no matter how advanced or complicated
No more looking up chord shapes:
You'll never have to look up how to play any chord ever again
Understand complex chord labels:
You'll know all the proper naming and labeling conventions for all chords, simple or complicated
Be an asset to other musicians:
If a friend or bandmate asks you what any chord is you'll know the answer or be able to figure it out quickly
About Chords on Command
Chords on Command is a comprehensive theory guide to how chords are made on the guitar. It's a proven, transformative, and hands-on system for gaining a complete understanding of guitar theory chord structure. By combining foundational music theory and the logic of the fretboard you'll learn how to identify—or design from scratch—literally any chord, in multiple places all over the guitar, no matter how advanced or complicated.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This week's lesson is on a seriously cool, chord substitution music theory concept.
Mark, one of your fellow Sound Guitar Lesson followers, recently posted this comment on one of my lessons:
“The only thing I’m still kinda in the dark about is the diminished and dominant flat nine . . . Diminished chords are shady characters, if they were people I wouldn’t trust them. It’s just a matter of time before I grasp and understand their relationship with dominant.”
Haha! Yeah, diminished 7 chords are shady characters—they can pretend to be so many things at once.
But when using them as chord substitutions, that’s what makes them powerful!
Here is one sentence from the lengthy reply that I sent him explaining the relationship between dominant 7 and diminished 7:
If you take any diminished 7 chord and lower ANY of the four notes in it by a half step then it becomes a different dominant 7th chord each time. That means that the diminished 7 shape can be a chord substitution for any of those dominant 7 chords!
Sound confusing? It is at first, and it deserves more than one sentence to explain it.
That's why I made this week's lesson video.
This is a great example of how all sound structures in music are so interconnected and related.
Changing something by one half-step can make a huge difference.
Definitely check out this lesson if you're interested in the theory of chord substitutions—and stick around for the end because in the last segment I play examples of how the sound can finally resolve to a minor triad and it sounds amazing :)
I hope you find it helpful, interesting, and inspiring :)

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
As an introverted online guitar teacher I find it challenging to expose my real-life personality in my videos.
I tend to keep the lessons "strictly business".
But off camera I'm a complete goofball!
So I decided to have a little fun with this fourth and final lesson of my jazz guitar walking-bass-plus-chords series.
In this lesson I teach a jazz guitar walking-bass-plus-chords arrangement of the song No Scrubs—chords, guitar part from the original song, and then how to arrange it with walking bass—by TLC (big hit in the 90s).
Sometimes we need a reminder that we're allowed to get weird and creative with new guitar techniques we're learning.
We can have fun and make songs completely our own.
I hope you try out this fun arrangement of No Scrubs by TLC, and let me know what unlikely song you might want to do a walking bass line version of :)
