Lesson Description:
Have you ever encountered this chord?: EbMaj7(#5). If you have then you’ve encountered one of the harmonic minor scale chords. If you haven't then you might be interested in knowing how crazy chords like that can even exist in the first place. In short, weirder chords come from weirder scales, which in my opinion includes the harmonic minor scale. In this week's lesson we explore the chords of the harmonic minor scale, and specifically the harmonic minor scale guitar chord shapes that I recommend learning as an introduction to harmonic minor chords.

This lesson on the chords of the harmonic minor scale definitely gets into some potentially confusing theory concepts, but that’s fun right?? :) Regardless, the harmonic minor scale chords presented with the chord shape diagrams that I provide should be simple to play with on your own, even if some of the theory is confusing. I hope you enjoy hearing the weirdness of that augmented chord from these harmonic minor chords (it’s one of my faves) as well as discovering that harmonic minor is one of the sources of the diminished 7 chord.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
There's a common misconception about guitar inverted chords. Yes, we can practice chord shapes that don't have the root on the bottom—which means they're inverted guitar chords right? Well... Yes and no. If simply viewed as guitar chord inversion shapes on the fretboard, then yes. But inversion guitar chords that are just shapes don't always function as true chord inversions in the overall sound of the music. In this week's lesson I explain the difference. I'm excited to share this video with you because there are so many great music examples to draw from!

Using inverted guitar chords allows us to connect the bottom voice of the harmony melodically much like treating each of our strings as a choir or an orchestra but on the guitar. Inverted chords aren’t always just shapes on the fretboard, but can function to move the overall sound of the music in a specific way. But both ways are still great to practice :)
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
What do the chord progressions of Blackbird by The Beatles, On The Road Again by Willie Nelson, Creep by Radiohead, Something by The Beatles, and the classic jazz standard All of Me have in common? They all include chromatic chords! Guitar chords from outside the key (non-diatonic chords). Millions of songs use a chromatic chord progression as an alluring harmonic compositional device. This device multiplies the amount of chords available to songwriters. Known as chromatic harmony or chromatic chords or non diatonic chords, this tool offers composers more emotional leverage to draw us in with. In this week's lesson I explain two of the most common types of chromatic chords and I show how each of the songs listed above use them. The two types are modal mixture chords and applied chords (or secondary chords) such as secondary dominants.

Chromatic guitar chords are such an awesome harmonic composing device for guitarists and songwriters. Some of the coolest chord progressions of all time are chromatic chord progressions that use either applied chords like secondary dominant chords or modal mixture. Music theory knowledge of these non diatonic chords can open doors to new possibilities for your songwriting or your understanding of what’s happening in the songs you love.

Lesson Description:
Last week I published a lesson on the theory of extended chords on the guitar. Two weeks ago I published a lesson on how to play ANY jazz chord with as few as eight simple chord shapes. That outcome is possible by reducing every chord down to it's most essential components and ignoring all chord extensions. But what if we want more than just the essentials? What if we want to add all those tasty, colorful extended chords? In this week's lesson I go through every type of jazz chord and demonstrate what kinds of chord extensions can be added to each of them. If you want some rich and sophisticated sounding chords in your tool box, and you're curious about how to play all those fancy jazz guitar extended chords in standard jazz tunes, then definitely check out this video.

Jazz guitar extended chords can be intimidating! They can be so daunting that we ignore working on really understanding jazz chord extensions for years. But it doesn’t have to be so scary. These jazz guitar chord voicings that I demonstrate in this video are the most common and standard chord shapes that guitarists use when applying chord extensions to jazz chords. They are sometimes considered advanced jazz guitar chords, but the method for learning them isn’t as complicated as it seems at first. That’s why I made this video.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Remember that Seinfeld bit where he says, "What's the deal with 9, 11, 13 chords? Guitar is so complicated . . . Chord extensions? Sounds like something in my dad's garage!" Okay, maybe he never said that. But if Seinfeld ever did want to know what the deal is with guitar extended chords, then this video would explain it to him. Whether you just heard of them now, or you've been playing them for years, this lesson will help you gain a complete understanding of what guitar chord extensions are. I include plenty of examples so you can hear how beautiful they are. I can hear Seinfeld now, sitting there with a guitar, "Extended chords? They should be called pretentious chords because they think they sound so much better than other chords." Alright... I'll workshop my bits a little more before including them next time.

Lesson Description:
For years I've been teaching a method for how to play any jazz chord using as few as eight simple jazz chord shapes by leveraging the power of guitar shell voicings. It sounds like the promise of an infomercial but it really works! Last year I made a free pdf booklet laying out these simple jazz guitar chords. But this shell voicings method is such a powerful and useful system for jazz accompaniment that I wanted to make a video about it too. In this tutorial I walk through the whole guitar shell voicings method and also play examples of how it can sound while jamming. If you're even slightly interested in jazz guitar or classic standards then learning these powerful but simple jazz guitar chords is definitely the way to go. This is the kind of material that can be a complete game changer and that you may find yourself using for many years to come.

6th chords aren't just another boring chord type. Yes, they sound delicious, but that's not what I mean. There's something else that's special and odd about them. Follow along as I explain major 6 chords and minor 6 chords, what makes them unique, and how to start enjoying them. Plus I snuck in a little 6th chords guitar solo (I couldn't help it).

6th chords—major 6 chords and minor 6 chords—are some of my favorite chord types. This lesson opens up a can of worms by showing us that the major 6 chord is an inversion of minor 7, and that the minor 6 chord is an inversion of half-diminished. Seeing how these 6th chords guitar shapes overlap with other chord shapes we might be familiar is just the beginning. So much music overlaps and relates in this same way, which somehow both simplifies and complicates things simultaneously.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
If you've looked up song progressions before you've almost certainly seen sus chords with labels like sus2 and sus4. We tend to think of sus guitar chords as just another chord shape to learn. But historically suspended chords had a very specific function in music. In this short video I explain the theory and history of sus chords and how I recommend practicing them. This unique and alluring chord type is a powerful tool for expression and definitely worth adding to your chord vocabulary.

Sus guitar chords are so beautiful, they’re worth exploring and understanding deeply, that’s why I made this video. In this video I talk about sus2 and sus4 chords, how to play sus chords on the guitar, and how to use sus chords both in a modern sense and a traditional classical sense on the guitar. Sus chords explained this way should help you understand suspended chords historically and theoretically. Suspended guitar chords can be just the spice you were looking for in a chord progression so I hope you’ll enjoy practicing them in the two ways that I suggest in this video.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
This week's chord voicings guitar lesson is one of my favorites so far. No drills or memorization, just a fun way to explore the fretboard and follow your curiosity. You'll realize how much control you have over chord voicings, guitar theory, and options for progressions. Check out how I use simple fretboard logic to start with a few basic chord shapes and find fresh chord voicings for those all over the guitar. If teaching you a chord by showing you a chord diagram is giving you fish, then this lesson is teaching you how to fish by teaching you how to find your own chord voicings. Guitar exercises like these are SO fun because you can follow your own path. Definitely take some time to play with this approach. Once it clicks it will permanently change how you see and navigate the fretboard.

Lesson Description:
How clearly do you see the fretboard logic of the guitar? If you didn't say "perfectly clearly" then you're not alone. We want the fretboard to feel as obvious to us as the keyboard is to a pianist, but at first it's far from it. Getting lost on the guitar is the norm, but it doesn't have to be. The fretboard is very logical. We want to study that logic and turn the guitar into a crystal clear map of musical possibilities. In this lesson I explain the two essential ways to do that. Learning fretboard logic like this can make all the difference and in next week's lesson we'll use these two skills to easily find a ton of new and creative chord voicing options all over the guitar.

This is my second fretboard guitar lesson but I’ll be doing more because seeing the guitar fretboard logic, fretboard mapping, and some strategic fretboard memorization can make all the difference in the world. The fretboard map we want to create on the neck is mostly about being able to see where the same notes exist in different places and learning fretboard octave shapes. The two fretboard exercises I gave you in this lesson are important parts of getting this stuff down. Learning is not just about hearing information explained—it’s very important to actually think through the material and practice it yourself in a hands-on way. That’s how we really get theory, and mapping, and logic like this down! Some people try learning fretboard diagrams on paper, but the fretboard map we want is only useful if we can navigate it with our hands on the real instrument. Good luck with learning the logic of the fretboard and mapping it out! I’m excited to show you what we can do with it in the next lesson.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
Last week I gave you an exercise for mastering several guitar seventh chords with six different chord quality shapes all over the guitar in total, five of those being seventh chords.
But that approach doesn't address how those seventh chords can exist together to make progressions.
In this lesson I'm going to show you how you can take those same guitar seventh chord shapes and map out which ones sound beautiful together in ANY key on the guitar.
Once we can see the fretboard in this way learning and writing chord progressions that use seventh chords is a breeze.
I LOVE powerful drills like this on their own but I always want to show you real music examples as well.
That's why I included the first phrase of a chord melody arrangement to a popular jazz standard that practically plays itself once we understand this amazing guitar exercise.

Don’t ignore this exercise for learning guitar seventh chords in every key equally. It’s so powerful. We have to repeat everything so much when we practice anyway, when working on anything that is harmonic or diatonic, such as working on seventh chords and chord vocabulary, we might as well repeat them all over the guitar fretboard in every single key! Once you can do this on the guitar, seventh chords in any key for any song and any progression, or for writing your own progressions is SO much easier.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
When I first started making guitar lesson videos people told me that I should make short "clicky" lessons to try and go viral.
I tried a couple times, but that's not me. I don't like to look for shortcuts.
In fact, I think the abundance of quick-win topics like "top 3 guitar hacks" is why it's so hard to actually learn and go deep on YouTube.
My goal is to provide substantive lessons with exercises that really work to help us improve on the guitar.
This jazz chord shapes guitar lesson does exactly that.
This robust exercise for mastering jazz chord shapes on the guitar is amazing.
True, it's not an overnight guitar hack, but it's a resourceful approach that you can come back to for years.

This is a fantastic jazz chord shapes guitar exercise for learning guitar 7th chords all over the fretboard. This kind of thorough practicing is what it takes to truly master theory and technique on the guitar at the same time. I call it the chord quality cycle exercise because it cycles through all the 7th chord qualities that exist in a major scale with the addition of the diminished 7 chord.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
Sound Guitar Lessons turns 1 this week! 🎂
Exactly one year ago this week I posted my first YouTube lesson video.
To celebrate I decided to take a break from the chords series I was doing to talk about consistency, and practice habits, and how to practice instead.
You don't want to miss this advice on how to practice that I learned from the world's leading psychologist on human performance and expertise.
Included is a fun practice challenge invented by Seinfeld that you can adopt in the new year to take your guitar progress to the next level.
Also included is a solo guitar arrangement of happy birthday, which I demonstrate in the video, and you can get a free copy of the sheet music if you want.
I'll get back to the chords series next week with one of my favorite 7th chord exercises.

Want to know how to practice? Deliberate practice is the secret sauce to real improvement. However, I recommend you solidify practicing consistently before you worry about quality. This is exactly how I’m approaching my own practicing as well as my YouTube channel. And because this video is being published exactly a year after I started posting videos I made a fun classical, fingerstyle Happy Birthday guitar arrangement. Yay!
I hope you enjoyed this lesson on how to practice and deliberate practice. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
I've had students who knew a bunch of awesome seventh chord shapes but were stuck not making progress.
Once they learned the underlying theory of how to make 7th chords, guitar creativity began to excel again and I watched them reach a new level of creativity.
That's what I want for you!
I have a few amazing exercises for mastering 7th chords on the guitar and I can't wait to share them with you over the next few weeks!
It's tempting to dive into those exercises right away because the best learning happens during our hands-on practice, but I'd like to set the stage first and thoroughly explain how to make 7th chords, where they come from, and why they're structured the way they are.
This is a good one—with lots of fun graphics to help you follow along—so if you're curious about theory at all I encourage you to check it out.

Learning how to make 7th chords, guitar theory, and chord construction in general is highly recommended. Being able to investigate where chords come from and how to expand on them for creative applications is a huge benefit on the guitar. Without this knowledge of how to make 7th chords, guitar chord practice is just a game of muscle memory memorization instead of a stimulating exploration of musical possibilities. Muscle memory is necessary but the more ways we know something the better.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

Lesson Description:
Can you play single chords up the neck of the guitar in at least six places? Can you see where that chord exists in every position up the neck of the guitar? If not then the exercise in this week's lesson is definitely for you. I call it the "144 Chords Exercise" and it's fantastic for clarifying the fretboard. I know that sounds extreme but it's really not, and you'll see for yourself as I demonstrate through the entire thing in the video. Make sure you watch this one (even if you know this stuff) because I also go on a great tangent about how to practice more effectively. :)

Knowing chords up the neck of the guitar in every fretboard position will help with seeing the natural logic of the fretboard. This chords exercise, which I call the “144 Chords Exercise”, is also great simply as a technique exercise. I highly recommend you go through this complete exercise at least once so you can know that you have, at one point, played every single major and minor triad in every position for those chords up the neck of the guitar.
Hope you enjoyed this lesson. Let me know what you thought :)

Lesson Description:
I remember having a conversation with other musicians at a social gathering many years ago.
Um... okay, yes we were talking about music theory at a party... no shame here :)
My friend Mike, a great ukulele player, shared how a song he was working on used the second chord of the minor scale in an unusual way.
"So you know how the second chord of the minor key is diminished?" he said as a setup.
Uh oh... "Yeah, totally," I replied.
Then I paused and decided to try to learn something instead of lying about it. "Wait... can you explain that to me actually?"
I had been playing guitar for YEARS but never fully understood the chord qualities that exist through the minor scale.
After learning the minor scale chords, guitar theory and all—and practicing through it on the fretboard—playing and writing in minor keys became so much easier.
I made this video so that those who need it can get this info down ahead of time before the music-nerd parties are allowed to happen again post-covid :)
I hope you enjoy

I remember how it felt before learning the minor scale chords - guitar playing in minor keys felt like a shot in the dark with a lot of guessing and checking. Once I learned and practiced the minor scale guitar chords in the way that I demonstrate in this video I got much more confident and I now see minor scale chords as clearly as major keys.
Hope you enjoyed this lesson. Let me know what you thought :)

Lesson Description:
“Theory is great, but what about execution and mastery?” That’s a comment I got in response to the theory lessons I’ve been creating for this series on how to learn guitar chords from the ground up. It’s a good question! The theory can be interesting but if we don’t know how to play and how to practice guitar chords then it’s hard to see the point. In this lesson I focus solely on the main challenges related to the technique of guitar chord practice. Exercise your ability to notice these pitfalls and you’ll be ahead of the game! I use chord progressions from popular songs to illustrate changing chords on guitar, muting unwanted strings, playing more dynamically, and other guitar chord techniques!

When I first learned how to find guitar chords that sound good together, andfinally understood WHY they sound good together, it was seriously a game changer. Since then I've developed an approach to clearly finding and seeing chords within a key on the guitar and I'd like to share that approach with you today. This fourth episode of my series called ""How to Learn Guitar Chords"" is about playing chords through a key, identifying chord degree numbers, and how to construct and practice a specific, moveable, triad chord voicing that I can promise will come in very handy. Don't miss my song examples near the end where I demonstrate how these chord shapes and this theory knowledge can be used to play and understand countless songs.

When figuring out how to learn guitar chords, and finding chords that sound good together, there's a quick way that leaves one lacking an understanding of guitar chords and there's a long way that provides music theory, technique, & fretboard knowledge needed to master chords on the guitar. I'm all about the long way. When we have control over chords on the guitar, and when we see guitar chord numbers in a key, we can logically piece together guitar chords that sound good together. After years of teaching people how to learn guitar chords and testing out tons of approaches, I've developed this method for mapping out the fretboard and deeply understanding guitar chords that sound good together within a key. Chord numbers are crucial for this process. Enjoy!

Playing guitar becomes so much more fun, rewarding, and expressive when we understand what's going on in the music that we're playing. This second episode of my lesson series called "How to Learn Guitar Chords" introduces the fundamentals of guitar scale theory as the foundation for being able to analyze, manipulate, and construct any chords on the guitar. If we learn just two simple concepts then we can play scales all over the guitar while tracking the scale theory—and that's what will allow us to master an understanding of chords on the guitar. Those two concepts, as well as an exercise for how to apply them right away, are covered in the lesson. Don't miss this fun and simple step for understanding guitar scale theory because we'll be using this information throughout the rest of the series.

Guitar scale theory is crucial if you want to know how to learn guitar chords deeply and thoroughly. Guitar theory (and ALL music theory) begins with scale theory—specifically the major scale. The major scale theory guitar exercise in this lesson is so useful and so amazing for how to learn guitar and how to play guitar in any genre that it shouldn't be overlooked. Knowing how to play the major scale all over the guitar based on the music theory number labels is what I call the "Major Scale Guitar Map". Other types of scales and any types of chord are practically just one step away once we know it. I hope you enjoy the exercise and I'll see you in the next lesson!

The guitar is a special instrument because it's melodic and harmonic. It can play a supporting role in music or be featured as a lead.
Nearly half of our job as students of the guitar is to be studying harmony and chords. That's why I'm launching a multi-video series on how to learn guitar chords from the ground up.
This lesson series will cover everything from basic guitar chords for beginners to complex seventh chords, chord extensions, inversions, rootless chords, and much more.
Most importantly I'm going to be talking about how to think about chords, how to see them on the fretboard, how to analyze them, and how to create them from scratch using music theory.
Instead of being locked in to certain shapes learned from chord diagrams, I want you to have options and creative control.

If you're interested in how to learn guitar chords I recommend going deep and learning music theory on the fretboard. In this series I'm going to take a theory based approach to give you everything you need to know about how to learn guitar chords from the ground up. From basic guitar chords for beginners all the way to advanced concepts like inversions and extensions, I want you to understand chords on the guitar. I want you to know where they come from, how to label them, how to talk about them, and how to manipulate them, so you can have creative control - and not just find yourself playing physical chord shapes without knowing why. Basic guitar chords are definitely an important first step, but learning how to label them unlocks a ton of possibilities, which is what we'll work towards understanding in the next few lessons.

Description:
There are many major scale modes guitar lessons that exist and many ways to approach getting the guitar modes explained clearly. My approach in this lesson focuses on seeing the difference between each of the major scale modes on the fretboard by identifying the defining note of each of the modes. The "Guitar Modes Exercise" in this lesson is designed to help you internalize all seven of the major scale modes with a hands-on approach by moving one note down by one half step as you cycle through the modes on guitar along a single string. Having the guitar modes explained and practiced in this way includes a massive ear training benefit as a bonus. This exercise for major scale modes practice is made easy for beginners but it's excellent for experienced guitar players as well.
