💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is another episode of my series called "Make It a Chord Melody."
When we arrange a chord melody, we support every note of a melody with a chord shape.
This lets us hear the harmony and the melody at the same time.
It’s a lot of fun to work on!
In this video, I teach you how to play "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" on guitar as a chord melody.
This tutorial is unique because most others don’t teach you how to play the chords and melody at the same time.
The video shows detailed diagrams, sheet music, and tabs that highlight as I play so it’s easy for you to follow along.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson on how to play "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" on guitar.
Let me know what you thought in the comments.

Major scale chord melody voicings
Hey 👋
I just posted a video lesson about how to improvise jazz chord melodies.
This is a clip from that video, where I explain fundamental information for playing chord melodies.
It's cool because we can harmonize almost every note of the major scale with just one chord!
I also sneak in a passing chord 😉
If you're interested, you can check out the full video that this clip is from on my channel.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this video, I show you how to write down music without reading notes.
Writing out melodies like this is extremely beneficial even if you already know how to read music.
In fact, reading music doesn’t automatically develop the skills this method teaches you.
What I show you in the video is the most abstract representation of how I think about music.
This method will help you identify and execute what you hear inside your head, improve your sense of relative pitch, and help you remember melodies more easily than before.
I hope this lesson helped you learn how to write down music without reading notes.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Have you ever taken a solo over a chord progression with chords that change quickly?
Did you ask yourself: How do I handle the chords moving along so fast? Do I really need to outline their chord tones?
The answer is definitely not.
In this video, I explain how to improvise jazz guitar solos without worrying about quickly changing harmony.
We can do so by using an improvisation technique called prolongation.
I talk about using prolongation over a 1 6 2 5 chord progression, which is very classic in jazz.
Each of those chords take up just two beats, so they change fairly quickly.
There are many ways to improvise using prolongation, so in the video, I provide concrete steps to help you practice it from the ground up.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about how to improvise jazz guitar solos over a 1 6 2 5 chord progression. Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this lesson, I talk about how to work on rolling chords with the right-hand.
Instead of playing the notes in a chord all at once, we're rolling chords when we roll our fingers from the lowest to the highest note.
It's a wonderful technique that can add a lot of expression to your playing in a fingerstyle or classical genre.
In the lesson, I go through a series of exercises for rolling chords that are musical and fun to play.
With focus and attention, these exercises will make you very confident in rolling chords on guitar.
Whether we use nails, no nails, or finger picks, it makes no difference to rolling chords – the technique itself is the same.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about rolling chords and found it beneficial.
Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this video, I teach how to play the "Never Gonna Give You Up" guitar chords.
It's a pretty challenging solo guitar arrangement, but great for technique and really fun to play.
The idea for this video was “how to Rick Roll someone on guitar.”
You could say to your friends, "Hey, check out this thing I just learned," play something at the right key and tempo, then switch to this arrangement.
They'll never see it coming!
But the Rick Roll joke is really an excuse to teach you the "Never Gonna Give You Up" chords.
The video has diagrams of what I play as I play it, note for note, so you can easily follow along.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about the "Never Gonna Give You Up" guitar chords! Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is my 200th video in a row, posting every single Tuesday for 200 weeks!
In this video, I talk about how to play a guitar solo over simple triads and demonstrate different ways to solo over a 1-6-4-5 progression in the key of E.
I just got an email asking about this. Eric says:
"Recently, I'm practicing chord tones, and I'm using a simple chord progression like 1-6-4-5 to master basic major and minor triads.
The simple chord progression with no extensions makes me curious about how to make a beautiful solo over it, since it's very basic with limited options.
If possible, can you please make a video about it?"
The main thing that jumps out at me from this question is saying that simple chord progressions limit our options for soloing.
Harmony can be simple, but our soloing options are never limited.
You can always play anything you want.
In this video, in my typical fashion, I break down several steps for how to play a guitar solo over simple chord progressions.
Once you’ve practiced and gotten comfortable with the harmony and chords, then you can let go, play, create, and express yourself.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about how to play a guitar solo over simple chord progressions and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
If you're interested in learning how to get music gigs as a guitar player and how to make money playing guitar, then this video is for you.
For many years, I played a ton of gigs on the guitar to make a living.

I do make a distinction between gigs and shows.
If you're playing a show at a venue and you want your friends to come and watch your band, that's a whole different deal.
I'm talking about gigs, like playing background music at events.
I explain the tips in that context, but all of them will apply to almost any kind of professional music gig that you want to do.
Make sure you watch until the end because the main takeaway is very encouraging if you're interested in playing music gigs at all!

What is your musical outlet?
Hey! Here's a clip from a video I made about how important it is to have an outlet for your music practice. The idea is: if we practice without milestones that are connected to the outside world, we're going to hit the wall of meaninglessness.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is part three of my series called "Finding Fulfillment, Joy, and Meaning in Music."
In this video, I emphasize the importance of avoiding what I call "the wall of meaninglessness."
The wall of meaninglessness is a point where you're practicing a lot and trying hard to get better, but you lose sight of your purpose behind the whole endeavor.
I start by sharing a short story about a student of mine who practiced a lot and sounded great, but felt depressed because he hit the wall of meaninglessness.
To avoid hitting the wall of meaninglessness, we need to have an outlet for our practice.
Later in the video, I go through a list of possible outlets and their benefits.
I hope they encourage you and stimulate some ideas!
Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is another episode of my latest YouTube series called “Make It a Chord Melody”.
Quick note: After next week I’ll be taking a break from the topic of chord melodies, but I’ll continue adding to this series in the future.
I want to share an important concept with you in today’s video.
Chord melodies, harmonizing melodies with chord shapes, isn’t just for jazz.
We can play any melody—nursery rhymes, traditional tunes, pop songs, folk repertoire, country music, anything!—as a chord melody.
No matter what kind of music you’re into, this practice allows you to hear the harmony and the melody at the same time on one instrument.
To demonstrate this, in this lesson, I arrange a portion of the traditional country song, “Long Black Veil,” as a chord melody.
“Long Black Veil” is an excellent example that contrasts the sound of jazz: the melody is based on a pentatonic scale, and the chords are simple I, IV, V triads.
The end result is lovely!
Let me know in the comments what song you’re inspired to arrange as a chord melody for yourself.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about creating guitar chord melodies and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)
