LESSON DESCRIPTION
In this lesson we're going to harmonize a one-note-melody with twelve different chords.
If you're curious about what chords go with what melody notes, or how reharmonization works, then this video should be helpful.
Here's what it covers:
-You'll hear and see the twelve chords that all harmonize one note (with clear chord diagrams)
-You'll hear the chords and melody together in time
-And just for fun I solo over the progression, so you'll hear and see what scales work with each chord for improvising.
I got this idea from the jazz fusion guitarist, Mike Stern. I went to one of his workshops many years ago and I've been using this technique ever since for improvising, composing, and arranging.

LESSON DESCRIPTION
In my opinion, being able to improvise over chord progressions using JUST chord tones is the gateway skill to being able to improvise anything.
A few weeks ago I published a lesson on this topic, but I didn't quite break down how to start working on it from the ground up.
In this video I use the song "Fly Me to the Moon" and I lay out a crystal clear process for how to start improvising with chord tones at any skill level.
If you want to improvise over progressions then this is one of the very best things you can work on.

Question for you...
What's the difference between a scale and a melody?
The answer is what today's video lesson is about.
It's PHRASING!
And it's super important.
Without solid phrasing exercises and strong phrasing abilities our melodies will either sound
a) Disconnected, illogical, meandering
b) Like boring practice drills
In this lesson I go over five guitar phrasing exercises that will help your soloing, improvising, and melody writing.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson on 5 guitar phrasing exercises and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This week's lesson video is on what I think is the most critical skill to practice in jazz improvisation.
I demonstrate this skill while soloing over Autumn Leaves.
And this isn’t just limited to jazz soloing.
This is the core ability that I work on when improvising over chord progressions in any genre.
We want to practice what’s often called “chord tone soloing”.
This means improvising with chord tones ONLY.
And making it sound good 😬
After that, anything else we want to play becomes a million times easier (and even starts to happen naturally).
In this video:
• I demonstrate chord tone soloing over Autumn Leaves with the chord tone diagram shapes on the screen.
• I discuss what makes chord tone soloing, and soloing in general, sound good (it's not the notes!)
• And I talk about how we can easily add chromatic notes and scales after having chord tone soloing totally down as a core skill.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about chord tone soloing over Autumn Leaves and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

This week’s video is the final piece in my series on playing classical guitar without nails.
This is something I’ve never done before—a full interview with another guitarist/teacher on YouTube.
Rob MacKillop is a master guitarist and a grounded musical artist who believes that every musician should have their own individual sound, and even their own technique.

• The importance of having an outlet for your music
• How to balance many musical interests
• The history of no-nail guitar playing
• How to find your own unique voice in music
• Embracing imperfection
• And much more
I hope you find it inspiring.
P.S.
I loved chatting with another teacher so much that I may do more of these as a podcast, in addition to my weekly video lessons (which I’ll never stop doing).

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
I'm almost done with this mini-series on playing classical guitar without nails.
In this video I walk through seven different elements of the technique that it takes to play classical guitar, no nails style, with just the fingertips.
I know this is a pretty niche topic, but there isn't much information on it out there on no nails playing.
I think these videos will be a helpful resource as more and more people seem to be interested in playing classical guitar but don't want to deal with having long, delicate fingernails on one hand.
Also, learning and creativity feel so much more potent when switching things up and exploring a variety of styles and sounds that can influence each other.
For example, while working on the classical guitar without nails techniques featured in today's video, I came up with a simple fingerstyle/solo-guitar arrangement of Autumn Leaves.
I'm excited to share that arrangement with you in a few weeks.
But I'm getting ahead of myself :)
Next week will be the final video on playing classical guitar without fingernails, then I have some fun fingerstyle lessons, and more jazz videos coming up after that.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
I hope you're doing well and that you're safe and healthy.
I had a rough week recovering from COVID but I'm feeling a million times better now.
I'm working on finishing up my YouTube series about playing classical guitar without nails, and as part of my research I reached out to one of the foremost experts on the subject, Rob MacKillop.
Rob was very generous. We recorded an hour long interview and it was amazing!
BUT most of the audio turned out to be unusable due to an unfortunate error :/
However, some of it was okay, so I grabbed a little piece of it to share with you this week.
This is a clip from the interview where Rob drops some serious wisdom about finding and protecting your unique voice as a musician.
It's a short and light little video that I hope will induce some reflection and provide some comfort and inspiration.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Well... I got COVID.
It was pretty bad for a couple days but I'm feeling a bit better now.
I'm glad to have found the energy to make this lesson for you :)
After my "technique mistakes" video from a couple weeks ago I got a few questions about how to train our fingers to stay close to the fretboard and how to deal with the flying pinky guitar problem.
I remember when my left hand fingers were flying way off the fretboard when I played.
I fixed that problem by consistently doing a simple, specific conditioning exercise.
In this video:
• I explain what that exercise is
• I warn against a common piece of advice that you should actually avoid
• And I share how often you should be practicing this exercise and how long it should take until keeping your fingers close to the fretboard becomes second nature
If your fingers are flying away from the fretboard when you play then this could really help, and I hope it does.

I know things are scary in the world right now in a number of ways.
On the Titanic I would have been in the orchestra continuing to play as it went down.
So no matter what's going on—so long as I am able—I'll keep the lessons coming.
I genuinely believe that turning towards art creates peace in the world.
That being said, here's my free weekly lesson for you.
It's on how to master jazz comping using many inversions of the same chord so we can play more interactively and melodically while comping in jazz on the guitar.
To "comp" in jazz means to "accompany" someone else, but it can also just mean playing the chords of a tune.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
If you're like me, then every time you hear drop 2 or drop 3 you think, "wait, which one's are those again?"
The logic of why these chords are called "drop" voicings isn't clear on the fretboard like it is on the piano.
No matter how many times I refreshed myself on which shapes on the guitar were drop 2 or 3, it never really stuck.
UNTIL I started using this simple trick.
In this video I'll explain what drop voicings mean from a guitar fretboard perspective.
And I'll show you an easy trick for how to tell if any 7th chord is a drop voicing.
I hope you find that it cracks the code on what drop voicings mean once and for all.
Let me know what you think in the comments. Thanks for watching and have a great week!

This percussive "smack" serves as kind of a snare drum sound placed on the 2 and 4 (aka the backbeat).
You'll hear players like John Mayer use this percussive strumming technique all the time.
Adding a little percussive sound to your strumming patterns or fingerstyle patterns can be very rewarding.

LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This is the 12th and final video in a big series about mapping out and practicing arpeggio guitar shapes so we can sound amazing when playing over any chord by improvising around chordal tones.
This week we're going over the five steps it takes to solo over Dominant 7 b5 or "Alt" chords with complete creative control and confidence.
Each lesson in this series focuses on the five arpeggio shapes of a different chord type so we can improvise around chordal tones anywhere on the guitar.
• This is essential for lead guitar soloing (especially in jazz).
• It's great for technique.
• It's important for music theory clarity on the fretboard.
• And it's fantastic for composing melodies over chord progressions.
