💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
I get asked all the time about a recommended practice routine for guitar.
If you ever find yourself:
• Not making progress
• Getting off track from your goals
• Not knowing how to structure your time best
Then you can default to this simple practice routine that works amazingly well.
This is how I structure my time especially when in doubt:
1) Warm up
2) Main focus items
3) Back burner items
4) Creative/expressive items
This practice routine allows us to focus on the main goal, which isn't necessarily getting better, it's feeling nourished by music.
Touch on those four big categories each time you practice guitar and you'll be golden.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about the perfect practice routine for guitar and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
If we’re playing a chord progression, how can we play our own bassline to connect the chords?
In this video I’m going to talk about walking between chords on guitar.
This technique can bring a very basic chord progression to life in a fun way.
There are so many options and there’s no “one right way” to do it.
I’ll show you how we can start practicing walking between chords on guitar in a systematic way, starting with notes inside the scale, then moving to notes outside the scale, while consistently increasing the number of bass notes that connect each chord.
Practicing walking between chords systematically first allows us to know our choices, after which we can mix and match basslines by cherry picking our favorite sounds.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about walking between chords on guitar and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
It's not so smooth trying to practice along with YouTube videos when you have to constantly take your hands off the guitar, fumble with the keyboard and mouse to pause or rewind a video, and then get back to your playing position.
I'm certain that over the years I've lost hours and hours of productive learning and practice time because of this inefficient setup.
But now that problem has been solved.
This video is a Vidami pedal review for the YouTube Looper, Vidami Blue, a wireless, handsfree, multi-mode controller that’s compatible with Youtube and many other online learning platforms, including my website.
The Vidami Blue YouTube Looper controls digital audio workstations (like Logic Pro, Garageband, Pro Tools, and Ableton Live) and also functions as a page turner, which I've been using for reading sheet music on my tablet.
This YouTube Looper pedal has already saved me practice time by letting me keep my hands on the guitar and off the mouse and keyboard.
In this Vidami pedal review, I demonstrate how to use the three modes of the Vidami Blue YouTube Looper.
• Video mode
• DAW mode
• Page turner mode
Vidami gave me a special link and coupon code just for you to get 10% off if you want to get this pedal.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In many of my past improvisation lessons I've used a backing track app called iReal Pro.
Several people have asked me to make a video on how to make your own backing tracks from scratch using this app, so here is my iReal Pro tutorial!
If you're an iReal Pro user and don't know how to fully customize your own backing tracks, or if you're looking for a way to quickly play over any chord progression, then this video should be helpful.
I hope you enjoyed learning how to make your own backing tracks in this iReal Pro tutorial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this tutorial I'll show you how to properly do a guitar hammer on and pull off.
Guitar slurring techniques like hammer ons and pull offs can be really tricky.
If we don't learn the foundational principles for how to do them properly, then our hammer on and pull off guitar technique will sound thin and weak, and that will take away from the music we're trying to make.
Most guitarists are doing pull offs wrong unless they've intentionally worked on this.
I think this lesson will really help you get a clean and clear hammer on and pull off guitar technique under your belt.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about hammer on and pull off guitar technique and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
When I started getting serious about music and guitar, ear training exercises were the most difficult for me.
I tried all the ear training exercises you can think of, and there's one in particular that completely changed the game for me:
Singing through the modes the of the major scale over a single note drone.
Why does this work better than a lot of other ear training exercises?
Because by singing all the modes of the major scale, we end up hearing and identifying the quality and character of every chromatic note.
In this lesson, I’ll show you how to:
- Map out the modes of the major scale along one string
- Test your singing on individual scale notes
- Sing through all seven modes of the major scale in order
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about ear training exercises for the modes of the major scale and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
Since this week is the debut launch of my new course called Top Notch Technique, for today's lesson I decided to share a presentation from the course.
I haven't filmed this course yet (because I'm filming it live next week!), but I wanted to show some of it to you anyway.
In this video I teach through a slide presentation that's inside the ergonomics module of Top Notch Technique called "What's The 'RIGHT' Way to Hold a Guitar? (Your playing position options for longevity)"
In the lesson I go over what the ideal guitar sitting positions are, what angle to hold the guitar, what wrist position is optimal, how to hold a pick, how to manage tension, and much more.
My answer to these things might be a little different than you'd expect.
I also share a sneak peek example of some of the exercises and sheet music from the course at the end of the video :)
Keep in mind, this is just one lesson from the ten-module course, with each module having multiple lessons in it.
And no worries if you're not interested in the course, I hope you find this week's YouTube lesson about guitar techniques beneficial anyway :)
Thanks! :)

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this video I'll show you the whole-tone scale guitar shapes along the fretboard, why the whole-tone scale exists, and how to use it on the guitar.
The whole-tone scale is most commonly associated with the stereotypical soundbite of a harp during a dream sequence in film or TV.
In this lesson I’ll cover four main points:
1. What the whole-tone scale is
2. What the whole-tone scale is used for
3. The whole-tone scale guitar shapes on the fretboard and how to practice them
4. How we can use the whole-tone scale guitar shapes to improvise over dominant 7th chords and in the context of a longer chord progression
It can be a lot of fun to play with the whole-tone scale and explore its nebulous and unresolved sound.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about the whole-tone scale guitar shapes and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
The diminished scale, also called the octatonic scale, is widely used to create tension, change keys, or to just make music that sounds a bit odd.
The diminished scale is most often applied in classical music and jazz, but you'll hear it in film scores and occasionally in popular music.
When you're bored of your own playing, learning some diminished scale guitar patterns on the fretboard can help you break out of ruts and sound more interesting, modern, or experimental.
In this video, I'm going to show you exactly how to start working on the five diminished scale guitar shapes, as well as the next steps you can take to apply them on the guitar at an advanced level.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about diminished scale guitar patterns and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.

💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
If you're a fingerstyle guitarist (or if you aspire to be one), and if you like noodling around on the guitar in a fingerpicking style, then this lesson is for you.
In this video I share a fingerstyle guitar challenge and break down how to work on it from the ground up.
The idea is simple: Can you improvise melodies while your thumb keeps a steady bass note going?
I like to call this game "Next Level Noodling" because it takes the common habit of just running random scales and helps turn it into real music by adding bass notes, similar to a Travis Picking style, and by keeping everything in time.
When it comes to fingerstyle guitar, this is one of my very favorite things to practice—I play with it almost every day—and it's a fantastic way to train the independent coordination between our thumb and our fingers.
I love the simple but complete fingerstyle sound it creates and I hope you give it a try! :)
I hope you enjoyed this lesson about my fingerstyle guitar improvisation challenge and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought in the comments.
Thanks! :)
