Type 41 75 mm mountain gun 四一式山砲 - Walkaround - Yushukan Museum.
Originally uploaded on 1 feb. 2020.
The Type 41 75 mm mountain gun is a Japanese license-built copy of the Krupp M1908 mountain gun.
Originally it was the standard pack artillery weapon. After it was superseded by the Type 94 75 mm mountain gun, it was then used as an infantry "regimental" gun, deployed four to each infantry regiment.
In Japanese service the gun was crewed by thirteen men, twelve gunners and a squad leader. When the weapon was being fired there would be one aimer, one loader, one firer, one person to swing the guns aim left or right, a man inserting the fuzes into rounds and handing them to the loader, two gunners lying in reserve to the left and right of the gun position, and the squad leader sitting a little distance to the rear of the weapon. The remaining five men would ferry ammunition in relays from the ammunition squad, which would typically be in cover a few hundred meters behind the gun's position.
The 41 could be transported complete by its thirteen-man squad, or broken down into parts and carried on six pack horses using special harnesses, a seventh horse was used to carry ammunition.

Type 96 15 cm howitzer - 九六式十五糎榴弾砲 - Walkaround - Yushukan Museum.
Originally up-loaded on 8 March 2020.
The type 96 was intended to replace the Type 4 150 mm howitzer,
and took almost 2 decades, and was eventually ready in 1934,
but War Minister general Ugaki found it to be lacking and productions was halted until 1937.
The 96 proved to be a extremely modern, well designed and effective weapon, it had great elevation capability of 65 degrees, with a maximum range of 12,000 yards and could be vastly moved in a single load by a tractor or six horses.
Even due the production number of the 96 were considerably high, it would never completely replace the Type 4 howitzer and the production was stopped in 1945, with 440 built, it would still see use in the Korean war and even the Vietnam war until 1975.

Two of these howitzers that were used in these fortifications are now on display at the Yushukan WW2 museum in Tokyo.
The Type 89 and 96 Howitsers were dug into the caves and were knocked out in the fighting, they were salvaged after WW2 and the 96 was placed in front of the Veterans Club in Okinawa and in 1966 it was donated to the Yushukan museum and restored and placed outside. the 89 was placed in the collection of the Okinawa WW2 museum but was send to Yushukan in the 1970's.
The Type 89 15 cm canon was the main heavy gun of the Imperial Japanese Army's heavy artillery units and would see service from 1929 until the end of ww2.
The Type 96 was intended to replace the Type 4 150 mm howitzer, the development of the howitzer took the observations the Japanese made in WW1 in account.

Replica Mitsubishi A6M Zero - 零式艦上戦闘機 レプリカ - Walkaround - YOKAREN Peace Memorial Museum. 予科練平和記念館
The Mitsubishi A6M "zero"is a long-range fighter aircraft and was the main fighter of the Japanese Imperial Navy. it was developed by Mitsubishi in 1937 and entered production in 1939.
Approximately 10,000 aircraft were built by August 1945.
It was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 carrier fighter, but was usually referred to by its pilots as the Reisen(零戦, zero fighter)
The Zero quickly became known as a great dogfighter, with an outstanding kill ratio of 12 to 1.
But by 1943, due to inherent design weaknesses, rendering it extremely unmaneuverable at high speeds, and an inability to equip it with a more powerful aircraft engine, the Zero gradually became less effective against newer Allied fighters.
This Early Type 21 Mitsubishi Zero is a full-scale replica build
for the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Yokaren Peace Memorial museum.
The Replica project took several years and was made for 37.70 Million Yen in the
town of Ami.
It has been on display since 2015 next to the Yoshineren Peace Memorial Hall.
The Zero is on display during opening hours of the museum and will be displayed outside the hangar depending on the weather.

Yokosuka D4Y1 Suisei - 空技廠 D4Y 彗星 - Walkaround - Yushukan Museum.
Originally uploaded 18 apr. 2020.
The D4Y named by the Allies Judy was a two-seat carrier-based dive bomber developed by the Yokosuka Naval Air Technical Arsenal in the 1940's it was originally designed as a dive bomber, it would be used as a reconnaissance plane, night fighter and in special attack unit like the kamikaze.
The d4y was presumably one of the last planes to be used in a Kamikaze attack hours after the surrender of Japan. with admiral Matome Ugaki from the Imperial Japanese Navy on board and Ugaki apparently heard the Japanese surrender on the radio, but wrote in his diary noting that he had not yet received an official cease-fire order, and that he alone was to blame for the failure of his valiant aviators to stop the enemy, he would fly one last mission himself to show the true spirit of Bushido.

M4A1(76)W E8 HVSS Sherman - Walkaround - Saumur Tank Museum.
Production of the M4A1 tank began in February 1942
after the British placed an order,
it would have had a cast nose,
turret and a one-piece cast hull, with a 75mm cannon.
And was manufactured by Lima Locomotive Works.
These tanks were designed on British specs and was fitted
with the Continental R-975 air-cooled radial engine.
The M4A1 would be replaced on December 1943,
by the M4A1(76) W,
which received a more recent 76 mm M1 main gun,
A new turret with a new commander cupola
featuring 6 prismatic vision blocks and
a new modernized Continental R975-C1 engine.
Additional armor plate was often welded in front of the driver
and co/driver’s position at the front of the tank and
at the side to give them greater protection.
Later version would be identical to the M4A1(76)W, but
had the E8 Horizontal Volute Suspension System.
The Horizontal Volute Suspension System was developed
to reduce Ground Pressure and keep up with the
Shermans additional weight.
The HVSS system had a much wider 23 inch track, but still
remained a bolt on module.
It could replace the VVSS suspension on any version of the
Sherman or anything based on its hull.
It was very well received and used on many
late production Sherman models
and a few of the variants. It solved the flotation
problem with no drawbacks.
The M4A1(76) Sherman HVSS was a pretty successful
vehicle and had an efficient gun.
After the war, it would be used by countries
like The Netherlands and
France.
This Sherman has no recorded history.
It was named after aM4A2 Sherman named Uskub.
this French Sherman tank knocked out several
Nashorn tank destroyers on January 26, 1945
in the town of Grussenheim.

Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero - 零式艦上戦闘機 - Walkaround - Yushukan Museum.

After the war, all weapons, including Zero Fighters, that were left in various places were discarded.
However, in the South Seas, Airplanes capable of flying were used for communication with the Allies.
These aircraft were later dismantled and abandoned when they weren't able to repair them.
This aircrafy was abandoned at an air base in Rabaul in 1945.
The wing fuselage was salvaged in 1974, several other parts from 2 other aircraft were send to Australia, and one aircraft was send to Japan.
The wing fuselage came from the aircraft 4241 and was used in the restoration of the aircraft.
In 1980, the aircraft was obtained by the Kawaguchiko Motor Museum and restored with parts recovered from a M6A5 serial number 1493, found at the South Sea Islands such as Yap Island.
However, the deterioration of the aircraft was more extensive than expected and it took 40 years to restore, and in 1999 it was completed.
and with numerous aircraft projects in the works, the Kawaguchiko Motor Museum has leant this Zero out to the Yushukan Museum.
Yushukan likes to claim it was restored by them, for the anniversary of the controversial Yusukuni Shrine in 2002.

Biber U-Boat - Walkaround - Uncle Beach Vlissingen.
The Biber was a German midget submarine during WWII
It would be armed with two externally mounted
53-centimetre torpedoes or mines,
they were intended to attack coastal shipping and
were the smallest submarines in the Kriegsmarine.
Construction of the first prototype began in February 1944
and was completed in less than 6 weeks.
and was heavily influenced by the British Welman submarine.
The Biber was hastily developed to help meet the
threat of an Allied invasion of Europe.
This resulted in basic technical flaws that,
combined with the inadequate training of their operators,
meant they never posed a real threat to Allied shipping,
despite 324 submarines being delivered.
One of the class's few successes was the sinking
of the cargo ship Alan A. Dale.
The small submarine was found on
the beach at Breskens in 1950, after it washed ashore.
the remains of a German soldier was found inside.
It was probably destroyed during Operation Calendar
and British minesweepers report three periscopes near Breskens.
They started shooting and ramming the little subs.
One Biber surfaced, the driver on board surrendered,
one sank and the third disappeared.
It is suspected that the sunken Biber
washed ashore six years later.
The Biber was send to Fort Rammekens and was then send to
Zeeuws Maritiem MuZEEUm and restored and
can now be seen on the Oranjedijk in Vlissingen.
UNCLE BEACH.
On September 21, 1944, the Battle of the Scheldt begins,
consisting of several Allied operations,
with the main objective of securing the passage to Antwerp.
At the beginning of October,
the dykes on Walcheren are bombed to pieces at various points,
as a result of which Walcheren is largely under water.
On November 1, the final of the Battle of the Scheldt,
operation Infatuate, starts.
Allied troops make the crossing from Breskens and
land at Vlissingen on Uncle Beach, with the intention
of retaking Walcheren.
The Allies moved into the city along three routes
along the boulevard,
towards Souburg and right through the city center.

M4A3(105)HVVS E8 Sherman - Walkaround - Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland.
Production of the M4A3 tank began in June 1942
it would have had a welded hull and one piece cast nose, with a 75mm cannon.
And was manufactured by Ford Motor Company. It would have had a Ford GAA V8 engine.
Chrysler Corporation was the sole manufacturer of 105mm armed Shermans.
The production started in February 1944 and ended in March 1945.
The M4A3 would be the base for what would be the final Sherman type in US Army
Several types were built and slowly upgraded.
Additional armor plate was often welded in front of the driver and co/driver’s position at the front of the tank and at the side to give them greater protection.
The M3A3 would be the preferred and most reliable Sherman tank in the US Army in both the 75mm and 76mm armed tanks.
In October, 1942, the Chrysler Corporation began work on the development of a gun mount that could be adapted to the Sherman's standard 75mm turret.
A prototype was done in January, 1943. but the first prototype was rejected and the second had a redesigned breechblock and would be accepted.
Chrysler produced its first 2 M4(105)s in February,
1944 and had completed 211 units by the end of April.
A total production was 800 M4(105) Shermans with VVSS, and 841 M4(105) Shermans with HVSS.
Later version would have had the E8 Horizontal Volute Suspension System.
The Horizontal Volute Suspension System was developed to reduce Ground Pressure and keep up with the Shermans additional weight.
The HVSS system had a much wider 23 inch track, but still remained a bolt on module.
It could replace the VVSS suspension on any version of the Sherman or anything based on its hull.
It was very well received and used on many late production Sherman models and a few of the variants. It solved the flotation problem with no drawbacks.
The 105mm would see action in the Korean war and would be used by several countries after the war, like the Netherlands.
The Sherman 105mm was used by the Dutch army and after it service was over it was send to the artillery shooting camp Oldenbroek in the late 1950s, to be used as a range target.
It was salvaged in 2018 together with another Sherman tank and send to Nieuwdorp.
Volunteers from the Liberation Museum spent 16 months restoring this tank.
It is made to look like a tank from A Squadron of The Fort Garry Horse (10th Armored Regiment).
On October 30, 1944, this Canadian regiment with Sherman tanks entered Nieuwdorp
and gave support fire from the seawall to the allied troops who crossed the Sloe to Eastern Walcheren.
On Tuesday, May 14, 2019, the restored tank was placed in the Liberation Park Zeeland.
The tank was moved to the movie theatre in Vlissingen for the promotion of the movie Slag om de Schelde in 2020.

Originally uploaded on 1 aug. 2015.
The Pak43 "Panzerjagerkanone 43"is a German 88mm anti-tank gun developed
by Krupp in 1941/42, in competition with the Rheinmetall 88mm Flak 41
anti-aircraft gun and used during WW2.
The Pak43 was the most powerful ani-tank gun of the Wehrmacht to see service
and 2100 were produced it was also used as the main gun on the Tiger II, Nashorn,
Elefant and the Jagdpanther.
The main version had a cruciform mount. But to speed up production and keep costs down
the new Panzerabwehrkanone 43 Pak43/41 with a two-wheel split-trail carriage was developed.
The Pak43 at Troisvierges on the 337 road was found destroyed in the area, it probably got
damaged beyond repair and was then sabotaged by its crew, by disabling he gun barrel.
Today you can still see the battle damaged on this anti tank gun.
After the war, it was placed at the monument in honor of the US 6th Armored Division,
which liberated the town of Troisvierges in Luxembourg on 23 January 1945.

The SK18 was developed in 1926 by Krupp and Rheinmetall, after the German army wanted a new 10.5 cm gun as well as 15 cm howitzer which were to share the same garriage.
It would be produced until 1944 with a total of 1,433.
And would see service until the end of the war and after the war,
it served with the Albanian and Bulgarian armies.
This SK18 was damaged during the Battle of the Bulge and was sabotaged by its own
crew by firing the gun in compressed state.
It was salvaged from the area and can now be found on the Route D'Arlon in Useldange, as a monument.
Today you can still see all the battle damaged on the gun.

The Pak 43 was the most powerful anti-tank gun of the Wehrmacht to see service and 2100 were produced it was also used as the main gun on the Tiger II, Nashorn, Elefant and Jagdpanther.
The main version had a cruciform mount. But to speed up production and keep costs down
the new Panzerabwehrkanone 43 Pak43/41 with a two-wheel split-trail carriage was developed.
This monument was placed here, in the honor of the 6th Armored Division.
Next to the monument stands a German Pak 43 and an American M2A1 105mm Howitzer.
The M2A1 was probably a postwar howitzer and has no historical information
the Pak43 was probably used in the Battle of the Bulge and was abandoned and sabotaged by firing the gun in a compressed state.

sFH 18 - schwere Feldhaubitze - Walkaround - Cherain.
Originally uploaded on 28 dec. 2016.
The 15 cm schwere Feldhaubitze 18 or sFH 18 was the basic German division-level
heavy howitzer of 149mm during WWII.
Development on the sFH 18 began in 1926 to replace the earlier, WWI era 15 cm sFH 13,
The carriage was a relatively standard split-trail design with box legs.
Spades were carried on the sides of the legs that could be mounted onto the ends for added stability.
Production of the sFH would start in 1933 and would see it's first action in the
Second Sino-Japanese War with the CNRA and later with the Germany army in the start
of WWII.
This sFH18 was probably damaged in the Battle of the Bulge and
you can still see many battle scars.
The crew sabotaged the howitzer by firing the gun in a compressed state.
After the war, it was placed here in Cherain to replace a WW1 artillery gun
after the gun was taken because the Germans scrapped the monument for metal in 1940.

Pak40 Wreck - Walkaround - Schumann's Eck.
Originally uploaded on 15 aug. 2015.
The 7.5 cm Pak 40 was developed in 1939–1941 by Rheinmetall after reports of new Soviet tank designs.
The 5 cm Pak 38 was still in testing at this point, but it appeared it would not be powerful enough
to deal with these newer designs.
However, while the Pak 38 made extensive use of light alloys to reduce overall gun weight.
As a result, the Pak 40 used steel throughout its construction and was proportionally heavier than the 5 cm model.
A modified version of the gun designed specifically for vehicle-mounting was the 7.5 cm KwK 40.
The Pak 40 was the standard German anti-tank gun until the end of the war,
23,303 Pak 40s were produced and about 3,500 more were used to arm tank destroyers.
This memorial was erected on the 50th celebration of the liberation of Luxembourg.
The memorial contains several plaques of the American units who were involved in the battle.
There is also a Pak 40 at this crossroad, that was found in the area, it was restored
and was coated with anti rust coating at the Bastogne Barracks
and it was placed here as a new addition to the memorial in 2018.

M4A1(76) Sherman - Walkaround - Vielsalm.
Originally uploaded on 29 aug. 2015.
Production of the M4A1 tank began in February 1942 after the British placed an order,
it would have had a cast nose, turret and a one-piece cast hull, with a 75mm cannon.
And was manufactured by Lima Locomotive Works.
These tanks were designed on British specs and were fitted with the Continental R-975 air-cooled radial engine.
The M4A1 would be replaced on December 1943, by the M4A1(76)w, which received a more
recent 76 mm M1 main gun,
A new turret with a new commander cupola featuring 6 prismatic vision blocks and
a new modernized Continental R975-C1 engine.
Additional armor plate was often welded in front of the driver and co/driver’s position at the front of the tank and at the side to give them greater protection.
Later version would be identical to the M4A1(76)W, but had the E8 Horizontal Volute Suspension System.
The M4A1(76)w Sherman was a pretty successful vehicle and had an efficient gun.
After the war, it would be used by countries like The Netherlands and France.
This M4A1 76w Sherman was left behind in December, 44 during the
Battle of the bulge. It was probably left behind because of some mechanical failure and then stripped for parts.
It was placed in Vielsalm as a monument to the 7th Armored Division after the war.
The Sherman can be found on the N675 road into Vielsalm.

It would see all the improvements, and be the first hull type to take the HVSS E8 suspension system into combat.
The M4A3(76) Sherman was a pretty successful vehicle and had an efficient gun in the 76 mm M1.
The A3 would not be used in large numbers in other countries during the war like many other Sherman types but it was used by France in small numbers
It would also see action in the Korean War.
And would be produced in three factories with all turret types, 12,596 built in total between June 42 and June of 45.
This M4A3(76)w has Serial Number 4391x, and was built in May, 1944.
It belonged to the 1st or 2nd platoon of “C” company of 771st tank battalion.
During a move from Magoster to Marcourai on the 8th of January 1945,
this Sherman was hit by a daisy chain of mines which set the tank on fire.
This happened just outside Magoster and one person died between Samrée and Amonines,
The tank was salvaged for parts and ended up in a ditch.
the Sherman was left there until 1984 when it was moved to Beffe and later restored.
Now it is a memorial for Task Force Hogan.

This Sherman was probably one of the early Sherman tanks used in Normandy in late July, 1944.
This M4A1(76) W Sherman with nickname AMBOY was placed in 2004 in the town of La Roche-en-Ardenne as a memorial, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
It replaced an M26 Pershing tank that was on the same spot.
That M26 Pershing went to Le Camp Roi Albert in March.
This Sherman was knocked out during the Battle of the Bulge, it was hit by a German howitzer leaving a big howl in the front of the superstructure and it was hit two times with an anti tank gun.
One hit in the gun mantlet that went straight through and one in the superstructure the impact killed the crew instantly.

Achilles 17pdr SP - Walkaround - Arlon.
Originally uploaded on 5 jan. 2016.
The 17pdr SP Achilles was a British variant of the American M10 tank destroyer during WW2,
The M10 was armed with the 3-inch (76.2 mm) M7 gun on a modified Sherman tank chassis.
The 17 pdr SP Achilles was basically a modified M10, with the Ordnance QF 17 pounder, a substantially more powerful gun than the 3 in M7 mounted on the standard M10.
The Achilles proved to be an excellent tank destroyer, but the open-topped turret left the crew vulnerable and a lot of crews were lost because of artillery fire, on the other hand the open-topped turret gave excellent visibility which was valuable to a tank destroyer and it also improved reload speed.
A total of 1,100 M10s were converted to Achilles, making it the second most numerous armoured fighting vehicle to carry the 17 pounder gun, behind the Sherman Firefly.
It would see use after the war with countries like Belgium.
The Achilles here at Arlon doesn't have any historical information,
It has Serial Number 7420, and was built by Fisher in October, 1943.
The vehicle seems to have battle damaged on the back of the hull and the engine compartment seems to be destroyed.
The Achilles has been moved in 2021 for restoration and will probably be moved to the Patton Monument in Arlon.

Parker from the 106th Infantry Division managed to hold the crossroad from 19/23 December,
from overwhelming odds, with only remnants of the 589e Field Artillery Battalion and
two regiments of the 422nd and 423rd. Parker managed to knock out several German tanks with the M2A1 Howitzer.
The Second ss Panzer Division captured the crossroad on 23 December, 1944.
But behind schedule and with many losses, thanks to Major Parker and his men.
